"We know far less about Tolkien's Eves' eating traditions, customs, and meals than his Hobbits' or Men's...What is certain is that the Elves do eat and drink, and appear to enjoy doing so."

The Elves across Middle Earth are often shown apart from Tolkien's main characters - a bit aloof, a bit distant, and maybe even (dare I say it?) a bit snooty.

One thing they do have in common with the "regular" folk, they eat ravenously - not the simple, hearty meals of the men or the vast and filling meals of the Hobbits - but food made with good wine, fine spices and delicious delicacies.

The author starts the book with a brief introduction, explaining how he chose the recipes and the research that went into the recipes. He seeks to take the all of the knowledge of the elves from their prehistory, to their customs to the mentioned eating habits and combine it into this cookbook.

For example, he mentions that the Teleri are known as the Sea-Elves and would likely know their way around fish dishes so he would select dishes that involve seafood to represent that race of elves.

"Kindred by kindred, landscape by landscape, the book aims to build up an imaginary picture of the cuisine of the Elves."

From there, we have a section on the genealogy for the races of elves and then we delve into the recipes.

Breakfast Dishes -- Here we have a mixture of hearty and lighter breakfasty foods. There's fancier dishes like cured salmon, Teiglin Roast Hazelnut Muesli, Gondolian Rose-Petal Jelly and there's more down-to-earth items like Bilbo's Rivendell Scramble or Aman Cornbread Muffins.

Light Meals -- These are soups, salads and other appetizer-like dishes. Greenwood Nettle Soup followed by Menegroth Endive and Pear Salad and finish with Legolas's Duck in Lettuce Boats.

Main Dishes -- Many of these dishes have a touch of elegance compared to the Hobbit recipes from Recipes from the World of Tolkien - combining interesting flavors and providing an unique dining experience. You could enjoy the Nenya Cod and Coconut Curry, Orome's Venison Pie, or Rivendell Roasted Lamb.

Feasting and Sharing -- The elves were well known for their hosting capabilities and for their bouts of merriment. These dishes are scaled up for larger crowds. There's Valinorian Potatoes, Nandor Barbecued Chicken, and Starlight Tabbouleh.

Desserts and Sweet Things -- The elves enjoyed their savory dishes but wouldn't turn up their noses at a little sweet treat to cap the dining experience. You could learn how to make Melian's Plum-Topped Cheesecake, Galadriel's Cookies, or Legolas's Bramble Pudding.

Drinks -- And (of course) the elves were well known for their proclivity towards drink. There's Gildor's Elderflower Cordial, The Elvenking's Red Wine Punch, and A Laiquendi Cocktail to enjoy!

Overall Thoughts

This is a wonderful cookbook for a true fan of the Lord of the Rings and other works by Tolkien.

When I reviewed the first Tolkien-themed cookbook by this author Recipes from the World of Tolkien, I thought it was a rather beautiful book but lacked some key elements.

It was gorgeously illustrated but the recipes weren't often pictured, the recipes felt a bit all-over according to themed sections, and the connection between the source material and the recipes felt tenuous at times.

Well. Let me eat my words because that has all been resolved in his latest cookbook.

We still have some line art drawings, but now we often have full-color photographs of the dishes. I think the inclusion of the photographs really helps to enhance the cookbook.

In the World of Tolkien cookbook, the recipes were split up according to the Hobbit Meal Traditions (Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevensies, etc).

I understand why the author did so, but considering there were so many meal slots, the recipes between the first three mentioned felt like they could easily be combined into a single category - Breakfast.

This made using the cookbook a little bit frustrating - you could easily be flipping back and forth between Luncheon, Dinner and Supper to cobble together a coherent meal since all of the recipes overlapped in theme.

In this cookbook, the sections mentioned had clear distinguishing lines for the recipes and everything was appropriately themed to their slot.

The recipes themselves were a fairly even mix between the familiar and the unusually fancy. You'd have recipes like a vegetable stew or red curry in the same section as pheasant with blackberries or stuffed bream with sampire.

I liked having options - are we learning how to make venison steal or are we falling back on a familiar beef casserole.

My favorite thing about this cookbook was how each recipe is accompanied by at least a few sentences but often full-paragraphs explaining why the author felt it fit into the cookbook. He also included many quotes to emphasize the appropriateness of the recipes.

I've read the books through once, watched the movies at least a dozen times and have read the Hobbit now times than I can account so I appreciated the inclusion of his thought process for the more obscure connections.

He drew connections to the local flora or fauna, to text regarding the habits of the elves, and even to specific pages in the source material.

I was so impressed by the level of research and dedication it took to ground all of these recipes in the world of Tolkien.

Overall, this book is in depth. It is very nitty-gritty - which is just the way I like a literary cookbook.

En este libro de recetas nos encontramos platos inspirados en el legendario que creó Tolkien en su famosa saga de El Señor de los Anillos (más el Hobbit y el Silmarillion).

Son un total de 50 recetas que están divididas en diferentes secciones:
- desayunos
- entrantes
- platos principales
- banquetes compartidos
- postres y dulces
- bebidas
Como veis hay una gran variedad de tipos de comidas (y bebidas) y os aseguro que todas tienen muy buena pinta.

En cada una de ellas nos dan información como el número de raciones o el número de preparación. Los ingredientes, por otro lado, me han parecido bastante asequibles, aunque sí es cierto que hay algunos otros que son bastante específicos. Las recetas están muy bien explicadas y me han resultado en general bastante asequibles.

Por otro lado, me ha gustado mucho los títulos que les han dado a los platos, como: "Sopa de ortigas del Gran Bosque Verde", "Brochetas de verduras de las Montañas Azules" o "Tarta de avellanas y pera del Teiglin".

Es, en conclusión, un libro súper apetitoso y del cuál muchas ideas se pueden sacar. Es ideal tanto para a quienes les gusten la comida o para los amantes de Tolkien que quieran acercarse más a su mundo.

Some interesting recipes that I look forward to trying. Directions seem clear and concise. Some recipes are a bit more complicated in terms of technique and preparation but the majority are straightforward and relatively simple to prepare.

The recipes are inspired by LOTR and other Tolkien classics originate from a wide variety of Earth cuisines with interesting tie ins/backgrounds to the books.

A good selection of recipes in each category. Some ingredients will be difficult (or expensive) to source in the US, but it is published out of the UK inspired by a a classic English fantasy novel so this should not be a huge surprise!

All in all a fun cookbook to look through but not one I’m eager to add to my permanent collection.

***If you are looking to store any of the jelly recipes which the author suggests sealing with wax or just putting in sterilized jars and screwing the lids on… please, please check the current recommended canning times and methods or be sure you are comfortable with the potential risks of open kettle canning. Since the book is published out of the UK it does not use USDA recommended canning standards. If you are concerned, you can likely find similar recipes to obtain recommended timings and methods. ***

Cookbook inspired cookbook. What a fun idea! It was lovely to reminisce all those delicious foods of Middle earth. Elven cookbook is a nice idea but execution is not so imaginative than I hoped.
Very British cookbook. I found book's font a bit difficult to read. There was not enough pictures. Instructions could have be more detailed

Przenosi nas ona do stołów Lothlórien i Rivendell, gdzie potrawy pachną lasem, świeżością i ziołami. To nie jest zwykła książka kucharska, a literacka uczta dla wielbicieli Tolkiena i kulinarna podróż przez Śródziemie i nie tylko… 🌿

Autor zabiera nas do kuchni elfów z niezwykłym wyczuciem atmosfery. Każdy przepis to nie tylko propozycja dania, ale i opowieść, spleciona z legend, poezji i odwołań do tekstów Tolkiena. Choć ten nigdy nie przywiązywał w opowieściach wagi do posiłków, które serwowane były jego bohaterom (a przynajmniej nie we fragmentach dotyczących elfów), to nigdy nie napisał kulinarnej wersji „Silmarillionu”.
Anderson wypełnia tę lukę z szacunkiem dla wybitnego pisarza i pokazuje swoją nieprzeciętną wiedzę na temat literatury spod pióra mistrza.

Dania w książce są podzielone na klasyczne kategorie w rodzaju śniadania i obiadu, ale także wyróżniono posiłki typowe dla biesiad.
Każdy przepis to nie tylko lista składników i opis kroków niezbędnych do stworzenia kulinarnego dzieła, ale także garść wskazówek praktycznych: ilość osób dla których wystarczy porcji, czas przygotowania, bądź też możliwe zamienniki lub praktyczne wskazówki. Wszystko to w pięknej oprawie graficznej - jak przystało na książkę o elfach - zielonej, złoconej, jakby wyjętej z biblioteki Galadrieli. Każde danie opatrzone jest ilustracją, a w książce znajdziecie dodatkowo wiele grafik i motywów nawiązujących do lektury.

Wśród przepisów znajdziecie zarówno pozycje wegetariańskie, mięsne, jak i potrawy słone i słodkości. Autor wśród ponad 80 przepisów, umieszcza zaledwie kilka bardziej skomplikowanych dań. Co do zasady jesteście w stanie przygotować pozycję z książki nawet jeśli gotowanie nie jest Waszą mocną stroną. Warto jednak zwrócić uwagę na listę składników – dużo pozycji nie wymaga niczego szczególnego i dodatkowych przygotowań, jednak diabeł tkwi w szczegółach i znajdziecie w książce dania zawierające składniki, które nie są dostępne w osiedlowym sklepie.

I so enjoyed reading all the snippets of Elven history (according to Tolkien) throughout this lovely cookbook! It has been several years since I read LOTR and it was a good refresher on the various Elven people groups, their homelands, and their customs. Every recipe that I read had me nodding: yes, I could see an Elf eating that.

However, many of the recipes called for quite unique ingredients. Nettles, anyone? Wild boar sausage? Bouquets of herbs? And very, very few recipes had photos. (I know this is simply a personal preference, but this is my review.) And the biggest thing to surprise me: no recipe for lembas! The most well-known Elven food out there! There is a recipe for coimas, which the author says was the forerunner for lembas... but I wanted a lembas recipe!

I do not regret at all the time spent reading about the Elves. But this one is not useful to me as a cookbook, so I can't give a full five stars.

Super cute book with lots of great recipe ideas. The only problem is that there are quite a few of these recipes require ingredients that aren’t easy to find in some areas. Things like nettles, samphire, venison (depending on the season), may require some real planning and money in some cases. There’s definitely a few easier options with more pantry staple/accessible items, just putting the note out there for other people. I love all the details with the eleven family tree and descriptions/lore added in.

I read through to determine which recipes I want to make from it. Unfortunately not a whole lot because there are many ingredients that are hard to come by. The author also really stretches on how the recipes would be relevant to the elves of Tolkien’s world because there isn’t a whole lot of elf food. He draws inspiration from the Silmarillion in particular, so kudos to him for being creative with obscure references.

It’s nothing like what I expected. I expected dainty vegan types of meals, and while there are a few, this book delved into LOtR lore and pulled some really hearty and meaty meals also. I enjoyed reading it and can’t wait to try the recipes within.

Świat Tolkiena jest niezwykle rozbudowany, a każdy detal ma znaczenie od miecza, pieśni, legend, a nawet jedzenia. Chociaż lud elfów nie słynie z gastronomicznych uniesień, a bardziej z elegancją, dostojnością i głębokim uduchowieniem, to „Książka kucharska elfów” ukazuje, że te niezwykłe postaci potrafią czynić cuda również na stole. Nie jest to jednak sztampowa książka kucharska, to podróż w nieznane dotąd rejony elfickiego świata.

Co do samych przepisów i receptur to uspokajam jest Rembas i miruvor, jednak bogactwo, z jaką zinterpretowano kulinaria elfów jest imponujące. Każda nazwa jest bezpośrednio związana z elfami, a same dania mają w sobie charakter danego miejsca, mitu, czy historii.

Wielką siłą tej książki jest sposób jej wydania, który jest niezwykle kunsztowny i ma olbrzymie wyczucie stylu. Kaligraficzne czcionki, tonacja kolorów niczym z Rivendell, Lothlórien i innych elfickich krain. Każdy przepis opatrzony jest genezą, co oprócz samego gotowania pozwala się kolejny raz nurzać w świecie Tolkiena. Całokształt ten sprawia, że nie jest to zwykła książka kulinarna, a prawdziwy tolkienowski kulinarno-literacki artefakt.

Absolutnie nie jest to książka wyłącznie dla fanów Tolkiena, chociaż Ci tak jak ja będą zachwyceni. Ta publikacja, odchodząc nieco od klimatu i aury zadomowi fanów kuchni opartej na świeżości i prostocie, która sporo czerpie z sezonowych warzyw, ziół i darów lasu. Są też nieco bardziej wymyślne przepisy, jednak nie jest to nic co przerosłoby każdego amatora.

„Książka kucharska elfów” jest dla mnie strzałem w 10, ma w sobie hołd dla Tolkienowego świata i jest pod każdym względem dopieszczona od estetyki po merytorykę. Jeśli książka kulinarna może mieć klimat i atmosferę, to ta właśnie ma w sobie spokój i zapach Rivendell. Ta publikacja oprócz praktycznej strony kulinarnej zdecydowanie rozbudziła moja wyobraźnię.

Moją biblioteczkę wzbogaciła „ Książka kucharska elfów. Przepisy inspirowane losami elfów Tolkiena” jest ciekawym dodatkiem dla miłośników tolkienowskich przygód.

W tej pozycji dosłownie zasiadamy z elfami i do stołu. Każdy przepis poprzedzony jest krótka notatką nawiązującą do bohaterów lub lokalizacji śródziemna, a nawet informacjami o życiu Tolkiena, które mogły wpłynąć na jego wyobraźnię i być inspiracją czy pierwowzorem dla rozległych krain, które stworzył. Mimo, wielu nawiązań do natury, nie trzeba zakładać łuku i upolować zwierza niczym Legolas, aby zdobyć składniki:) spokojnie wszystkie składniki z łatwością można zdobyć w ludzkim świecie.

Książka podzielona jest na 6 rozdziałów ( śniadanie, lekkie posiłki, dnia główne, ucztowanie, desery i napoje) Ciekawa jestem jak by to wyglądało u Krasnoludów, raczej nie wyglądali na lubiących lekkie posiłki xD Na dłużej zatrzymałam się przy rozdziale ze słodkościami, a jakby inaczej :) W planie mam zrobienie Tarty z Hithlum, w skład której wchodzą orzeszki piniowe – które uwielbiam :)

Przepisy raczej nie są rozbudowane i wydają się być proste w przygotowaniu. Mamy podaną szacunkową liczbę osób potrzebnych do zjedzenia dania :) oraz czas gotowania. Jak to w zwyczaju jest w tego typu książkach załączone są obrazki dań, niestety nie do wszystkich, za to dodatkowo dostajemy tematyczne obrazki na wzór rycin.

Za książkę dziękuję wydawnictwu.

Kirjassa itsessään jo sanotaan, että Tolkien ei varsinaisesti juuri kuvaillut haltioiden ruokia itsessään, vaan lähinnä tuoksun tai niistä jääneen muiston perusteella. Sinänsä voidaan kuitenkin odottaa, että metsässä ja meren rannoilla asuneina haltiat olisivat syöneet paljon niiden antimia. Lisäksi ehkä myös terveellisesti ja kevyesti vastineena ihmisten ja hobittien raskaampaan ruokavalioon.

Kirjan reseptit on nimetty haltiamaisesti, mutta muuten niissä ei tunnu olevan juuri logiikkaa tai teemaa, sillä ohjeista löytyy niin omenapiirakkaa, itämaisia annoksia kuin guacamoleakin. Punainen lanka puuttuu kokonaan, eikä suurimmasta osasta resepteistä ole edes kuvia. Vähän kaukaa haettua, eikä siksi välitä oikeaa tunnelmaa haltioiden ruoista.

Każda strona pełna jest ciepła, natury i delikatnej magii. Przepisy są proste, często roślinne, inspirowane dzikością natury i elficką harmonią.

Nie tylko dla fanów gotowania, ale dla każdego, kto tęskni za spokojem i pięknem świata Tolkiena. A piękne wydanie sprawia, że sprawdzi się też idealnie jako prezent
