Jitterbug

Rate this book
This little ladybug will rock you!

Ladybugs are so cute, small, and fly so gently. Not so for the “Jitterbug”— Lady B. Marie! Her heart beats for rock 'n' roll. She holds the electric guitar in her hands, her voice belts out melodies, she sings and grooves like crazy. Papa, Mrs. Snail, and Grasshopper are less enthusiastic about the music and soon the other meadow dwellers leave the scene. She's just too loud! Does the Jitterbug give up? No! She sings alone on the tranquil meadow— This was more than glitz and glam. It was a “Here I am!” Right on cue, reinforcements arrive in the form of a colorful band of beetles who want to give a concert on the meadow. The band recognizes Marie's talent and now the show really gets going.

Word artist Kai Lüftner forges grandiose rhymes— impressively translated into English by Marshall Yarbrough. You can't help but be carried away by the charm and wit. In addition, Wiebke Rauers creates the amusing world of images for a little beetle that really turns up the amplifier.

I loved everything about this picture book! Adorable and colorful illustrations with a cute and funny story. A great read aloud book for the young ones — especially if you add in some sound effects and animation in telling the tale. I would certainly have my air guitar handy for this story — playing the role of Lady B. Marie riffing my guitar!

But there is more than laughs and giggles. Behind all of the fun, there is a lesson. Don’t let critics and naysayers get in the way of your passions.

Jitterbug was a blast to read and I’m sure that the littles in your life will have a great time as well. Who knows? Jitterbug may just be the spark that ignites that budding musician in the family. Five outstanding stars.

I received a digital ARC from NorthSouth Books through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

Wailing, flailing, little head banging,
Legs hooked over a tree limb, hanging,
Fist raised high-up above the ground,
Baring her teeth and gettin’ down.

What a wholesome little punk rock tale told from the perspective of a rocking little ladybug! The rhymes are really cute and fun, and the tale reminds you to be yourself because no matter how many people tell you to stop, eventually the right group will find you without you having to compromise what makes you you. The art is funky and fun, filled with adorable characters. Thoroughly recommended!

A ladybug that loves rock and roll? Yes please!!! How fun!!

This is a fun story about how it is okay to be different, even in the face of adversity and those around you just wanting you to be like E V E R Y O N E else [in this case, a nice QUIET ladybug], and how to combat the loneliness that often comes with being different [and with people who don't appreciate rock and roll music ;-) ], AND just how amazing it is to find others who are different but like-minded in their likes as you [and you end up with a very cool-looking Bug Band!!!].

The illustrations for this book are. the. best. Bright, bold, and very colorful, they bring Lady B. Marie and where she lives to life and really adds to the overall story. Kids of all ages will love this for the amazing illustrations, the idea of it being okay to like things that others don't [DIVERSITY is awesome!!!! That is why there is many, many, many, kinds of music, books, movies, etc etc], and the fun, timely story that celebrates everyone.

Very well done and I highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kai Luftner, Wiebke Rauers - Illustrator, Marshall Yarbrough - Translator, and NorthSouth Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very cutely and colorfully illustrated picture book. Jitterbug is Lady B. Marie. She isn’t shy or quiet like the other bugs. She is loud and wants her noisy music heard. The story is told in rhyming prose and has a nice message. The illustrations work better for me than the poetic prose. I thought it was wordy for younger readers. And some of the vocabulary would need to be explained to younger grade levels. I don’t mind doing that when I read books to students but too many explainations can distract from the story flow. Thank you to NorthSouth Books and NetGalley for a temporary eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations, the way of presentation is so good!
It’s like a singsong rhyme kind of picture book about a bug and the different animals around her. I wouldn’t say the illustrations/art style is the highlight of this book.

Thank you, NorthSouth Books Inc, for the advance reading copy.

Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc., for accepting my request to read and review Jitterbug.

Author: Kai Lüftner
Published: 04/04/23
Genre: Children's Fiction

The illustrations are bright and cheery.

I was side-tracked, missing the point of the story. At the conclusion I was stymied. I kept looking at Jitterbug, and then the pieces began to click. The story was too long and far-fetched for me.

However, I do believe there is a market for this book, I just don't know it.

Unerwartet grossartig!

Looking for a cute picture book about accepting your differences and being who you are and not fitting into a box just because everyone else says you should? Jitterbug by Kai Luftner is the picture book for you. This cute book introduces us to our main character "Jitterbug" who is a Ladybug/ Ladybird. All she dreams about is being a rock star and playing loud music. The other bugs though laugh at her and tell her to be quiet and try to discourage her music as they just don't understand why she loves it the way she does. That is until another bug rock band comes to town and they hear her music and invite her to jam with them. Once this happens, her music fits in with theirs and soon an amazing rock melody is heard and the other bugs start to rock it out and everyone comes to love her music. Jitterbug is a good read to teach children as well to never give up on their dreams and that there is nothing wrong with being different and yourself as we weren't made to fit in boxes while we are alive. That comes when we are dead.
Jitterbug also has beautiful and fun illustrations thanks to Wiebke Rauers and is the perfect picture book for children aged 3-6 years old.

This is a super cute book about being true to yourself. It’s heavier in text than I expected but the story is told in rhyme so is a fun, enjoyable read. The illustrations are bright and captivating. A great addition to any children’s book collection.

What better way to celebrate the start of 2023 than with a picture book that will rock your world-literally! 🎸 Jitterbug is definitely the next picture book that you'd want to add to your bookshelves!

A little about this gem of a read…

Lady B. Marie is not your typical ladybug who is “oh so sweet”. This little jitterbug isn’t about swing dancing either, folks. She’s a born Rock n’ Roller! 🤘🏼🎸 Think double-neck electric guitar and an awesome amplifier to go with that. While this tiny, fearless, yet adorable ladybug loves to jam out on nature’s stage, other neighboring insects are not so enthusiastic about the rock music filling the air. 🤦🏻‍♀️. Nevertheless, LBM shows us readers valuable lessons about never letting the “noise” around you drown out your dreams, and never being afraid to walk to the beat of your own drum (or the strum of your own guitar strings)!

What else to love about this sweet book? ❤️

🎸The bold, electrifying, ultra-detailed illustrations (a hint of digital illustrations mixed with watercolor, airbrush, and chalk).

🎸The hidden silhouettes and backgrounds are splashed with vibrant neon colors, scrapbook pieces, and even newspapers (with what seems like a nod to the author/illustrator).

🎸The delightful and melodic rhyme scheme that is filled with humor, charisma, and lots of wit!

🎸The rich and groovy vocabulary used throughout the entire book (the first page alone has words such as whimsy, flimsy, coarse, and glisten).

🎸The ultimate theme of staying true to one’s self.💯

🎸And last, the fact that this read will you have feeling all kinds of Rock n’ Roll and positive vibes!

Favorite quote from the book:

But rather than let herself feel sad,
She ripped a solo-look out, Dad!
She didn't need a heard or a flock.
All she wanted was to rock!
Her voice in stillness of the wood.
Bearing witness. It felt good!
This was more than glitz and glam.
It was a declaration: "Here I am!"

What a perfect picture book for young readers (and readers of all ages) to enjoy!

👋🏼 A special thanks to @northsouthbooks and @netgalley for the digital ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the e-ARC to read and review. When I first saw the title/imagery, I could immediately picture this book being a whole Thing, with cute plush dolls and music-playing interactive books and all. It's certainly adorable, and lends itself to a whole franchise full of spin-offs and tie-ins, for sure. Love the world of Jitterbug! But the text on its own wasn't what I was expecting. I think telling the story in rhyme is appropriate for the musical theme, but it wasn't lyrical when read aloud, or structured like a rock song by any means. I actually struggled with some of the tricky rhymes, and some of the vocabulary is either really advanced (even for me reading as an adult) or is out of context (because it's not explained or was seemingly chosen just to make the rhyme happen.) I stumbled over words like chagrin, gaily, and such even though I do otherwise know what they mean. - I did belatedly see that I read this book in English and that is a translation, so I'm thinking that adds to some elements not adding up as I'm sure it could otherwise really shine.

Thank you to North South for gifting me a free copy of this ebook for my honest review. This was cute. The message is loud and clear-it's ok to be different and you will find your people eventually. Lady B. Marie is a ladybug who is supposed to be quiet, calm, and lovely. She is quite the opposite--loud, raucous, and carefree--and she turns off a lot of the other bugs around her, even her dad. When they all desert her and she's left alone, a band of punk bugs stumble upon her and see her for her greatness. They bond over like-spirits and music, joining together to rock and roll. The pictures and colors are vibrant. The rhyming writing was a bit complex and awkward on certain lines; to me, it took some of the message away. There would have to be a lot of conversation around what the message of this book is with young children. I don't know why the dad didn't stand by his daughter; that aspect was sad. Overall, it was cute and has a positive message to be yourself unapologetically, even if no one else sees your unique greatness.

Readers and listeners from preschool to grade 3 are sure to love watching the not-so-sweet and demure ladybug rock her way to stardom in this vividly illustrated picture book originally published in Switzerland.

Lady B Marie is supposed to behave like all the other quiet and somberly dressed ladybugs but instead, spends her days rocking out as loudly as possible, decked in wildly outrageous colors and styles. When a roaming band of musicians hears her guitar riffs and belted out lyrics, they add their amplified stylings and stardom is born with those same naysayers now dancing along with the hits.

There’s rhythm and rhyme that works even with the translation into English, detailed illustrations are done in a darker color palette that completely works with the rock and roll backdrop for this “be yourself” themed picture book. Excellent choice for libraries, whether home, public or school.

Thanks for hosting the giveaway that garner this book for me, Heather Macht and Seasons of Kids Lit.

This fun rhyming book is a celebration of being who you are created to be.

A unique little ladybug, named Jitterbug - Lady B. Marie, goes against tradition in the ladybug world because she loves to strum her electric guitar and belts out rock and roll melodies. She is unlike all the other ladybugs who are quiet, shy and demure. Oh my!

She screeches heartfelt songs that are loud, messy, off key and are enhanced by crazy unprecedented dance moves. The other ladybugs are not impressed with her taste of music. Jitterbug isn't intimidated by their reactions. She doesn't give up and continues to march to her own drum and musical rhythm.

The illustrations are bold, vibrant and electrifying... perfect to give the book a rock and roll vibe. This inspiring book will encourage kids to live out their dreams and follow their hearts desires. I love the book and highly recommend it.

Jitterbug is a very cute picture book for young reader who love music (every type music). This book follow young ladybug name Lady B Marie aka Jitterbug who refuse to become quiet and shy bug. She determined to make other meadow dweller recognize her talent on Rock n Roll. Although other neighbors seem not sure about this kind loud music, Jitterbug just never give up until reach her goal.

Awww.. This one is super adorable! Written with poetic rhythm prose the story about young ladybug make me giggles with her determination. The illustration are colorful and give blast of happy vibe.
This book will make great gift for children and small library collection.

This little book about a rocking ladybug with a BIG personality is absolutely wonderful.

Lady B. Marie, also known as the Jitterbug, just wants to make music. Unfortunately those around her are less than thrilled about the constant wail of guitar that drifts through the meadow. Never giving up, and honing her skills every chance she has, Lady B is quickly becoming a talented musician, always channeling her feelings into music.

So when a group of well known musicians wander into town looking for a quiet place to practice, they come across the wondrous melodies that the Jitterbug drifting through the air. Will Lady B finally find her place?

Thank you so very much to Netgalley and NorthSouth Books for the opportunity to read and review this title.

Jeepers, I was sucked in by that cute cover, and I suspect many others will be as well.

Instead of being a sweet, quiet ladybug, Jitterbug yearns to rock and roll, though I think she, and the story, could have used a hefty dose of soul instead - reading this was such an empty experience.

If you're looking for a tale about finding yourself, and letting your freak-flag fly, there are much better books out there. Kids may love the eye-popping art, but there's not much of a hook to keep 'em interested.

Thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the read.

Jitterbug is, quite simply, superb. I enjoyed every second of this picture book and I'm sure kids will too! The artwork is incredibly colorful and comes alive on the page. I was impressed with the rhymes and rhythm of the story. Most of all I appreciated the lessons it will teach kids: it's okay to be different, stay true to yourself, and you will find people who understand you just for being you!

A rock'n'roll ladybug? Yes, please! This is an adorable children's story that stars Lady B. Marie and her rocking guitar. Although her approach may be a bit too loud, she is able to overcome her obstacles and gives the concert of a lifetime for her insect friends. This was the cutest children's story I've read in a while, and I can't wait to share it with my niece--she'll love it.

Originally written in German by Kai Lüftner and translated to English by Marshall Yarbrough, Jitterbug is the kind of book that will get kids trying out their own killer dance moves and vocal performances. The rhythmic verse is as impressive in its translation as I imagine it is in the original (I don’t understand German, sadly). Kudos to the translator!

A classy look at individuality, as a punk-rocking, guitar-playing ladybug gets isolated by all the other bugs in the neighbourhood, due to her raucous taste in music. The artwork is very strong, showing her wilful energy and devil-may-care attitude, and the rhymed narrative is longer and busier than you may have expected. The inevitable beat of the story where acceptance is finally given by all the other critters is a bit brief, but this is definitely a success.

Jitterbug the ladybug is known for making...er, music. Sort of. Her community mostly hears her music as noise that isn't pleasant. Jitterbug doesn't care. She continues to share her music with anyone who will listen. It finally pays off when a group of insect musicians discover she's just what they're looking for.

A bit long and the rhyming is overdone, but it's cute. Not recommended for storytime though.

I thought that this book was really good!

The book was well laid out and I loved the writing style.

It had some lovely illustrations that really brought the book to life.

The story was well planned out and I loved the ending and moral of the story – be your own bug (or person!)

It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!

The rhyming of this book gives it a lyrical quality that I just love it's great for little kids. The brightly colored illustrations really pop. This book has this amazing story about being true to yourself even when everyone tells you the things you like are wrong because they don't matter and those that take the time to listen and understand are going to like you for you.

We read this book after the second one lol but it didn’t affect the story too much. We loved Jitterbug’s rise to fame and that she proved to everyone that she could love her dream. The illustrations are cute and perfect for the story. My daughter’s favourite part is when she found her band.
We would recommend this book and the sequel Goth Moth to everyone.

This ladybug loves making music - especially rock and roll. The other inhabitants are not happy when she jams loudly so move away. She continues to make her music and is joined by a rock band of other insects. The rhyme scheme is off at times but the story's point comes through. I love the detailed illustrations.
