3.5 stars: This is the second book in the Thirteen Witches book series. I enjoyed the first book a lot, but this one was just okay. There were some good moments in this book, but the overall story wasn’t as interesting or intriguing as the first book. The time travel felt very bland at times. I will still pick up the third book when it’s released next year.

A fun fantasy middle school book. Rosie Oak's is a twelve year old witch hunter. Along with her best friend Germ she is out to rid the world of Thirteen Witches and along the way find her missing twin brother. The story is imaginative and clever. Who wouldn't want to travel through time in the belly of whales complete with lazy boy recliners and comfort food. They meet up with another witch hunter Aria to aid in their quest. This is the second book in the series and will probably be enjoyed more read in order. The series isn't complete as it ends just as a door opens to a new adventure. For 4th grade readers and up. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing for the temporary eARC in exchange for an honest review.

If I were to change this book, I would make the final battle different. Honestly, I'm disappointed that it felt so similar to other books - big battle, losses, and thinking we've won because we killed the enemies. It was very cliche in the battle and what happened, even if it was a trap, Rosie's way of resolving everything was still fighting and using her imagination to destroy the witches and their familiars. The ending I imagined had her finding a way to heal the hearts of the witches and put each heart back into their bodies, so the witches can feel and become part of the world again - not disappear forever because they were eaten or set aflame.

Super cute and suspenseful, funny and witty, and a little bit scary.
Love the character development and that strength is shown in what can be considered weak characteristics.

This sequel wasn’t as good as the first; but, it was still a fun read. The time travel dragged on for too long, with each witch feeling much like the last. I liked the new characters and story arcs.

It was so good to be back with these characters & story. I love the world this author has created, & the whole idea of all of these different witches, who all have the best names that are appropriate for the specific power they possess. I also love the Witch Hunters & that backstory. Rosie is still the most endearing MC, & her Little One in the flashlight is the absolute best. Germ is the best friend anyone could hope for. I LOVED the whole concept of time Whales in here, & just every detail about them. I also loved Germs "connection" to theirs, & the name she gave it lol. Blown away by Ebb's role in this book. He's still a fav. We meet a fascinating new character as well, & I loved everything about them. Loved the adventure, danger, suspense in this one. But the details, the writing, & the characters are the best parts. Loved that ending too! Wow! So happy I could dive right into the last book right after! Highly recommend! BEAUTIFUL cover by Kirbi Fagan too!💜

To recap: My daughter told me that I just had to read the first book in this series, and she really hoped I would purchase the rest of them. I'm a sucker for books and my children reading, so what can I say? I read it, and I bought the other two.

This sequel was fantastic. I especially like how it can be read and completely enjoyed on a simple fantasy level. But if you stop thinking of the witches as actual beings and start thinking of them as impulses and base nature and the way humans sometimes treat each other, and then start thinking of the witch hunters and those who leave moonlight in their path as the people who show kindness and want to make the world a better place and are just nice to each other, well, then you're on another very enjoyable path of understanding this book at a different level. Just delightful.

Basically, this book could also be summed up as spending seventh grade in the belly of a whale.

Also, I usually hate, strongly despise, time travel novels, but I decided to let that go while I was reading this, and I chose not to worry about all of my complaints regarding time travel.

Excerpts

". . . until a few months ago, I thought time travel through the sea was a rumor spread by ghosts, and I'd never heard of a time whale."

----

Time on Earth does not disappear as it passes but rather, it sinks into the sea, becoming an invisible layer of history hidden within the ocean. Just as—above—there is surface reality and then the magical layer underneath, in the sea there is the real ocean and the invisible ocean of time. Still, the time ocean is very real in its own way, and any changes to time inside the sea will impact the course of history above.

----

Time whales are naturally hospitable creatures and are magically equipped to provide whatever their riders need. In with hunters' cases this might mean a living room and favorite foods. In the case of witches, it might mean darkness and emptiness and the smell of despair in the air.

----

". . . I thought the Salem witches weren't real. Do you think our teachers were wrong about that?"

"I guess so," I say. But really, I don't know. We learned about the Salem witch trials in fifth grade, but to be honest, I spent a lot of that year staring out the window, imagining the squirrels outside wanted me to be their forest queen.

----

I think how a witch like Hypocriffa—who steals people's sympathy—tells only one story, a story that's big and simple and loud: distrust, fear, judge. That's the story people were telling, at the water's edge, condemning that woman they thought was a witch.

And then I think of the women's innocence, and it wrenches at my guts how I couldn't help her. I think about how a truthful story is not loud or simple at all, how a real story lays small and slight things along a path you have to be curious enough to look for. It reminds me of a cricket: a cricket is so tiny, but its little song can keep a person up all night. The true things of the world seem kind of like that.

Once,, I think, a cricket hopped near the ear of a dragon, to sing about what was quiet and real. The dragon thought the cricket was no match for him. He swatted, and roared, and breathed fire to quench the creature's tiny song. But the cricket—being so small—hid in crevices, ducked behind rocks, and kept singing. It drove the dragon so wild, singing day and night, that in trying to set it on fire in a rage, the dragon set himself on fire instead. And the loud, blustering giant burned into ash.

----

I wonder if maybe it is worth being weird and awkward and not fitting in most places if I'm the person Ebb wants to have his first dance with, and the person Germ sees as her best friend, and the person who can make tiny suns that put monsters to sleep, and do things that make my friends believe in me. Maybe Germ's right that you don't have to have a big group of friends as long as you have the right group of friends.

In the bedroom, Aria has fallen asleep. Germ is writing "fart" on her forehead. We are misfits. But also we are normal in our own weird, witch hunting, time-traveling way. Being misfits is, maybe, what everyone in the world has in common most of all.

And despite being hyped up on orange soda and Oreos, on this night, I sleep the sleep of the untroubled, and the loved.

----

"What just happened?" Aria breathes as we all watch the ocean, which is still and calm.

"Chompy loves me," Germ says. "He wanted to help."

I blink at her, trying to take it in. Does Chompy really love Germ like Germ loves Chompy? I blink at her, panting, feeling foolish. I always thought Germ's loving everything and everyone no matter what was her weakness. Instead if rallied the whales . . . and I guess, possibly, saved the world. I guess Germ's witch hunting weapon is love.

Rosie Oaks had triumphed over an evil witch, opening a world of magic and experiences. As the last of a long line of witch hunters, it's up to her to track down and defeat the original Thirteen Witches. Rosie has a time-traveling whale to help her complete this quest, but does she really have the skill to defeat witches that had centuries to develop their talents?

This is the second book in the Thirteen Witches series, following The Memory Thief. I hadn't read that one, but in it, sixth-grader Rosie had to take care of everything in the house that her forgetful mother couldn't. There's allusion to this in the prologue, told from the POV of Rosie's mother, who is unable to follow Rosie because the only way to find her brother. Another witch declares that Rosie will die, which adds to the tension from the very start of the story.

As a book series meant for elementary school readers, of course, our heroine is young. Germ's initial wish for an adult to come help them is a very real one because, for all that Rosie has skills and her natural inherited abilities, they're both twelve! This is a concept that all middle schoolers understand: they want to be more independent, but are still children and realistically can't do everything they want to do. In this case, hunting down dangerous witches. Rosie knows she isn't as skilled, which for this novel makes her think about her journey, the job at hand, and the world she's now exposed to. As someone who missed the first book, this was a very smooth way to introduce the worldbuilding, as well as a way to learn more about Rosie and her best friend Germ. In a way, we also see why some of the witches do what they do. Their hearts are literally outside of their bodies and disconnected from them, and the stretch of immortality in front of them is incredibly empty. It's such a mature concept to put in the book, and I enjoy how the bad guys aren't simply evil for evil's sake.

In this book, Rosie and her allies don't charge in swinging and trying to fight off everything at once. I appreciate that, as well as the appreciation for Rosie being "weird." It's more than her imagination is her real tool, and being creative is celebrated. She thinks outside the box and is still affected by friendships, fear, and the need for connection with others. I love how communication remains one of her big go-to skills, even though she is twelve and sometimes gets caught up in what she's afraid of or what she thinks is happening around her. Rosie's strength is her connectedness with others, and how much she cares about her friends, her family, the brother she'd never met, and doing the right thing. What she thinks is a weakness for her or Germ or anyone else is actually what helps them meet their goals. It's a series, so this isn't the end of everything, but she has the strength to keep going even when it's hard, which is wonderful to see.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

Rosie and her friend Germ managed to survive in the previous book, and find themselves traveling the Sea of Always in a time whale to California in 1855, where Rosie's brother is supposedly sequestered by the Time Witch. It's very luxurious inside the whale, and anything they could want is provided, but it's also very boring. When the whale drops them suddenly on a coast, they are surprised that it isn't at their destination, but at a remote and dangerous looking location. Luckily, they are met by Aria, who welcomes them to the witch ruled world and grudgingly helps them. Her sister, Clara, has abandoned her, and Aria doesn't have a lot of hope. She agrees to help Rosie, and explains a lot of things to her. The Time Witch is still hunting Rosie, so the group tries their best to hide, but also catch the attention of the Nothing King, who is gard worse. They figure out, with the help of Ebb, a ghost from Rosie's home, that they need to steal the hearts of all of the witches and destroy them in order to further their goals and get closer to Rosie's brother. This involves a lot of traveling through space and time, and they don't have a lot of time to accomplish this mission. It's a game to the Time Witch, and finding the last witch, Convenia, is difficult. Will they be able to complete their mission, deal with the time witch, and save Rosie's brother and mother?
Strengths: Rosie is still intrepid in her endeavors to better life for her mother, and is determined to find her long lost brother. If it means stealing the hearts of a bunch of witches, she's not going to flinch. Aria was an interestingly mysterious character, and Germ remains stalwart. We find out more about the witches and their motivations, and I would imagine the next book will highlight the Nothing King. Ebb's story had a particularly satisfying conclusion.
Weaknesses: Traveling in the Time Whale was interesting, but went on for far too long. In a world where there is magic, I don't have a lot of patience for travel taking an overly long time. (It's the one thing I remember about Armstrong's 2013 Loki's Wolves!) Sure, you can run into difficulties, but it shouldn't be the fictional equivalent of getting stuck overnight in Chicago O'Hare.
What I really think: I liked this one, but not quite as much as the first, which has circulated well. I'm curious to see if the third book will be the last, and to see what direction it takes.

Summary

The Sea Of Always by Jodi Lynn Anderson is a fictional book in the series Thirteen Witches. This book is about a character named Rosie who takes on witches to save her twin brother, who was taken at birth by the second most powerful witch, the Time Witch. This Witch held him captive for 13 years and had Rosie try to find him within 30 days time.

Rosy Oaks is one of the last few witch Hunters on Earth. Each witch hunter has a special power and weapon they use to hunt and kill witches Rosie Oaks' power is like creation channeled into a flashlight powered by Imagine that she can make anything out of them whether it be a chameleon, bluebird, a cricket, or even a miniature sun.

My thoughts

The Sea Of Always is very intriguing for those who love fantasy, mystery, time traveling, and suspense throughout the story I am kept on my toes suspecting one thing to happen when in reality something entirely different happened.

What I loved about this book was how I thought one thing would happen or someone would do that or this but they instead had this idea or did it entirely out of the blue.

Within the story, there are more characters new people, and mystery unleashed a long with more plot twists happening in the story.

Favorite passage

“It might be Doom. But it also might be Annabelle's only Chance to reach what's more precious than her own life.” (p.117)

This is my favorite passage because it shows how far a mother (Annabelle) will go for her child (Rosie) to be safe even if it means risking her own life.

This passage shows that even a mother will risk her life for who they value the most in life even if it means that they may never see them again it just means that Rosie her child will be safe for a little while longer.

I gave this book a five-star review because of how nicely it transitioned from the first book to this book and because of how much mystery and plot twists were in the story.

If you haven't read this or the first book yet then go and read it.

This one starts where the first one in the series left off. I would recommend reading this as a series, since the characters and situations build on the last book.

Rosie and her friend, Germ, are now in the year 1855, stuck in the belly of a whale as they make their way California and the Time Witch. Rosie is still on the search for her brother and is ready to do whatever it takes to get him back. When the whale drops them off in an unexpected location, they luckily meet another witch hunter, who can help them out. But the Time Witch isn't easily dealt with, especially since Rosie is still on her list. When Rosie discovers that she needs to steal witches' hearts and destroy them to get her brother back, a race across time and space begins.

I enjoyed the first book quite a bit and was looking forward to see where Rosie's adventures led her next. She still has quite the adventure ahead of her, but handles it with tons of determination. While the time in the whale (even with its amazing comforts!) does draw out and caused me to skip over more than a couple of paragraphs, the tale does pick up again when they finally get to the shore. After this, the tale picks up its pace and tension mounts, while all sorts of problems come their way.

To say that Rose is determined is a bit of an understatement, but her family is as stake. So, it's no problem to root for her every step of the way. The other characters add the right atmosphere at the right time, making sure that...at least, after the whale...the story stays anything but boring. This one ends, leaving the reader waiting to see the next book to find out what happens next. And it will be interesting to see where all of this will end up. I received an ARC copy, enjoyed the read, and can't wait to see where this series heads next.

This is an enjoyable Middle-Grade read, but I didn't realize until I was reading it that it was the second in the series so I didn't follow as well as if I had read the first book before reading this one. I would recommend making sure you have read and checked out the first book before checking this one out to help make it more fun to read and easier to follow.
It's a great MG fantasy novel about a 12-year-old witch hunter trying to figure out how to be a witch hunter and find her way in this world of witches and magic along with her friend. They have adventures and this would be a good book for tweens, my 11-year-old will likely love it once she gets a chance to read it. Rosie is a feisty one that's great to read and follow along with her as she goes on her adventures, learning, growing, and figuring things out. She and her best friend have to go figure out how to find and get rid of all of the 13 original witches and the ending leaves you wanting more and wondering what will happen next.
If you love Middle-Grade, fantasy, witches, magic or the like then make sure to check this one out. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing/Aladdin for letting me read and review this fun MG fantasy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review this ARC with honesty.

This book takes place after The Memory Thief, the first of the series. Since this may contain spoilers if I go to far into the book, I'll refrain from too many references and keep it brief.

Rosie now is faced with winning a challenge placed upon her. And the sand in the hourglass is ticking. With the help of friends, she faces off things she never would have thought possible until now.

I liked this book. It had a nice pacing to it. I will say, I prefer the first just a tad more. There were instances that I thought something occurrences seemed a bit too convenient. But that's not to say I didn't still enjoy the story. Because I still had a lot of fun reading it. You got to see the old gang, more interaction with new and old characters. Also there was a bit more exploring into each character. And while there were times I felt Rosie was falling back into old habits, it felt organic. She's a young girl, going through this ordeal that gives her little choice but to face it and along the way, the odds continue to be against her.

Overall, the story kept me turning the pages.

My Rating: 4 Stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Getting Better and Better

I've been a fan of Anderson's ever since I found the "May Bird" trilogy, and my admiration for her was cemented by "My Diary From the Edge of the World", which marked a daring, creative step forward in terms of Anderson's willingness to take risks with her heroines, their imagined worlds, and their hero journeys.

This book, and the entire "Thirteen Witches" series, struck me as a nice middle ground, with a feisty and self-aware heroine, a well imagined magical world, an engaging cast of supporting characters, and a surprising amount of rueful and ironic humor. These books are so much more than just wand-waving adventures, and reward the reader with a generous and knowing understanding of tween girls. The magical peril and adventure is just a bonus.

(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

These books are so much more than just wand-waving adventures and reward the reader with a tremendous and knowing understanding of tween girls. The magical peril and adventure are just a bonus. What made this series stand out to me among all the other magical middle-grade adventures is this second book where a time-traveling whale is introduced. Also, we get a 3rd main character to aid in the battle against the witches and the creative way they attempt to trap the witches to end them. Thirteen witches series will be a delight for any middle-grade reader.

This is one of my favorite middle grade series! I loved the story and how it played out. The cliff hanger we were left on was great. I loved that it was continued right were it was left of in the last book. I really enjoyed the new characters introduced. I really loved that we got more information on what a Witch Hunter is in this universe. The only reason that I didn’t give it 5 stars was that I found the first third of the book a bit slow paced for my taste. Either way I loved the book and can’t wait to see what comes next for Rosie and her friends.

This was a strong follow-up to the first Thirteen Witches book. I felt a little slow in the middle—kind of like the middle of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with all of the camping?—but the pace really picked up toward the end and both tied up a lot of stuff and exploded a lot of stuff (literally and metaphorically). I’m excited to see where the next book goes and how Rosie comes more into her own and learns more how to believe in herself and her own awesomeness rather than trying to mimic the awesomeness of others.

A witch hunter named Rosie Oaks decides to go on a game with the Time Witch to get her twin brother
back. She has thirty days, but the Time Witch's hummingbirds stole ten days from Rosie! Inside their Time Whale they make a new plan. When their plan doesn't work the three of them has to fight a huge, exiting battle to win the game.

This fantastic fantasy book is an exciting, and a little strange adventure!

Book #2 in the Thirteen Witches series was fantastic and I am so glad that book #3 The Palace of Dreams when it releases Tuesday, March 7th. I am not sure how many books are planned for this series but I will keep reading them until Jodi Lynn Anderson stops writing them. Rosie and Germ grew up so much during this book, I love the addition of Aria and Wolf and the time travelling whales were so cool that I want one. :)

It was really interesting seeing the different witches and their curses and overall there was some great world building in this book. I liked the new characters and settings but it did feel like a lot was happening and some aspects felt a little rushed. There were some parts that felt like just a rush to get to the third book. I still enjoyed it and am excited to read the third book, but this is very obviously a second book in the series and I wish it stood out a little more on its own.

I liked this better than the first book, however I don’t think I’m going to be continuing with the trilogy. I probably would have loved this book as a 12 year old, however, now that I’m nearing high school, I just think I need something more mature. That’s not to say that I no longer enjoy middle grade books. I adore Lauren Wolk’s work, and Restart was positively spectacular, but I still feel like this genre is no longer for me. If you regularly read middle grade, tho, you’ll love this!

I absolutely love the book number two in the series… Amazing character growth and the story moves rapidly with a lot of intensity and development. At first I was really confused since I didn't read book 1 as to what was going on.
But then I got into it. I like how the author takes you on a trip around the world. Another thing I likes is that I didnt find the book to be predictable.

I like the magic and mystery of the book and I can see young teens enjoy reading this book.

We listened to the audiobook as a family and it's so well done! Such a fun, unique story that grips adults and children :). Perfect for the drive to Yellowstone and coloring on a calm night! A little spooky with ghosts and witches- this would be a great Halloween read! We're all excited for the 3rd one to come out next year!
