This continues to be in my top favorite manga series...probably top 5? I'd have to sit down and really look at my list, but the fact that it's 5 star after 5 star with no serious complaints says a lot.
This one finally addressed the one little complaint I'd been having, which is the issue of them moving in together. Natsume points out in the author's note that they've actually been dating for less than two years at this point, so they're progressing at a good pace - a little fast, even! But for two guys in their late 20s who don't have any doubts about spending their lives together, why should they wait?
I loved how much they both wanted that next stage in their lives, even if they talked about it in different ways, with Onoe being super enthusiastic and Kaburagi approaching it from a pretty chill, practical perspective. The main problem for him was timing, since Onoe had found a great apartment at their absolute busiest time of the year.
Appropriate to be reading this right before the Christmas break, when my work is knocking me off my feet with stress and exhaustion...but the two of them have it way worse. The big scoops are flooding in at the end of the year, and half their staff is knocked out by illness, so they're scrambling to cover even more than they already do. For Onoe, this means a lot of desk work, writing up and laying out people's stories as they come in.
For Kaburagi, it means several overnight trips, more stakeouts than usual, and eventually collapsing from overwork - although he was just tired, not ill. They have a little bit of a disagreement before that breaking point, with an already exhausted Kaburagi telling Onoe in irritation that he doesn't want to be nagged about taking care of himself. Onoe takes one statement badly - Kaburagi saying that he prefers to deal with things on his own - and snaps that maybe they shouldn't live together, then.
If he'd actually paused to think about it, he might've realized that Kaburagi had been bringing work over to Onoe's apartment, so he could finish up his tasks and still be with him, even if they weren't talking or really interacting. He was already going to him for comfort and companionship while he was wearing himself out.
The misunderstanding stretches out a little, but not for too long - it never does with these two. It leads to something I did not expect but absolutely loved: Kaburagi meeting Onoe's parents, not only as his coworker and new roommate but as his boyfriend.
I know there's another volume after this, which Sublime doesn't seem to be announcing for some frustrating reason, but this one ends on a really, really note that will hold me for a while. They're such a perfect couple: never too sappy or unrealistically idealized, but absolutely perfect for each other. I love watching them build their lives together.
