[CW: attempted sexual assault]

Now that she’s living with boys… not much has changed for Anzu. Still, she sure ends up on a date… with Riri!? But it’s an unexpected reunion with her elementary school friends that will bring the most shockingly unshocking revelation yet!

What is the word for a manga you know you should be enjoying a lot more than you actually are? There should be one, just so I can use it to describe this series, which means well and just doesn’t do it for me enough of the time.

Rather than the fun subversion of tropes we got last time, this one leans in hard with the revelation that Junta is filling the ‘chubby kid who turns hot by high school’ vacancy. On the upside, this does reveal that Riri’s not been manipulating people, just nudging their connections along. Still think it would have been more interesting if he was gay though.

Anzu herself remains amazing, just wanting to be left alone with her cat, and her attitude and happiness with her life on her own terms make her a five star heroine in a three star story. I guess we’ll see how it shakes out, but she’s amazing.

There’s an entire chapter devoted to the middle school life of Anzu’s best friend Takamine and how the two of them came to be besties, which is a different take on the popular girl, sort of. Takamine is, herself, pretty much ace, but a guy tries to convince her to take it slow until suddenly he doesn’t (this doesn’t shock the system, it’s super obvious).

I like this backstory, it gets into a lot of sexual politics and school awfulness, but it does feel very weirdly divorced from the main story in terms of tone. Like, a lot. There’s more than a little of that sprinkled throughout this volume, where things aren’t quite meshing together.

The big reunion gets turned on its head when the boys figure they are about to get away with mischief until Anzu turns out to be too cool for pretty much anybody. There are some interesting story beats here, including one I thought was coming and was pleased to see confirmed.

Where are the guys besides Junta? Around, I guess. Fading into the background, mostly. The rich kid barely has anything to do and our aloof guy gets his life a bit better explored. Anzu, at least, only ever follows her own drum, which is still her best feature.

I guess I just don’t see a strong narrative leading us to any sort of definitive conclusion. Riri makes a point about their meddling helping Anzu have good times she might otherwise never have had, regardless of the romance angle, which, as a perspective, is coming in a bit late in the game.

And it turns out Junta hasn’t been under a spell of any kind, so yay, but also boo. So that mostly leaves Kazuki, but there’s absolutely nothing done with him this volume except a brief bit at the start with his sister. It’s good, but if I’m going to care about anything I need a little more.

Or maybe that’s the point? Eh, even if this does go a whole other ‘single for life and happy’ direction, I don’t quite think it’ll combat the general aimlessness of this volume. Before the whole thing was meandering, but right now it feels practically rudderless.

3 stars - Anzu deserves better. Not the first manga I’ve read where the character was worth more than the story they found themselves in, sadly, and almost certainly not the last.

Anzu going on a date with Riri was actually adorable but they are such cowards for not leaving them as a girl smh. I have yuri brainrot and Anzu falling for Riri would have just been perfect.😔

Still in what I’ve seen in the anime - they did a really good job with both. I love so many little things about this series - full color, different character speach bubbles/text and the story is funny enough to appeal to everyone. This series is just so good - I can’t wait to read more.

There’s a couple of things I don’t like in the writing and choice of words, but this was another fun volume to read. I’m excited to see how it wraps up. The bonus scene at the end was hilarious.

Konnichiwa to all readers 🌸

Today I bring you the review of the third and penultimate volume of the manga "Romantic Killer" by Wataru Momose with the inclusion of a fourth heartthrob to the equation. With that said, we begin:

❤️This volume opens with a situation conducive to a more intimate approach between Kazuki and Anzu, instructing her to cook lunch. After the reactions of his high school classmates to the event, the plot turns to a confrontation between Anzu and a thug in the street.

This conflict is resolved by Kazuki's sister, who subdues the harasser. Immediately afterwards, upon being invited to the protagonist's house, we learn more details about the brother's background.

❤️In the center pages of this volume, Riri proposes to Anzu on a date using a cheeky reference to Haruka and Michiru's relationship in the Sailor Moon manga.
Firstly, the fairy suggests understanding that you could be a non-binary being before adopting a masculine appearance. Shortly after, upon meeting Tazuki, Riri claims to be on a date with Anzu and that he is her cousin. This reference comes to life because in the US dub, the two sailor lovers are introduced and referenced as cousins who are very fond of each other.
After the cinema, Anzu easily resists all of her companion's attempts to try to awaken something close to affection in her, reaffirming her intention to recover what was confiscated from her.

❤️In the last chapters of the volume, the lady is invited to a reunion of former primary school students. In this scenario we learn about Junta's past and how it overcame its stigma, surprising those gathered at the event.

🌸Conclusion: This third volume repeats the patterns seen in the previous two volumes, while adding new characters.
Anzu's development in this installment is interesting because she remains firm, although without being violent in her conflict.

Rating: 4🌸

Arigato enjoy your time 🌸

Anzu and crew are back! In this volume: Kazuki's past is hinted at, while his future as a housemate is secured and we meet his amazing big sister! We find out the truth about Junta's (or should we say Tonta's?) connection with Anzu. Riri's desperation leads it to ask Anzu on a date as Rio for research, but also to try and annoy the guys in Anzu's life. We learn how Anzu and Saki became friends (MORI MUST DIE!), and just why Saki goes along so easily with Anzu's crazy life. Lastly, Anzu and Junta meet up with old school friends, including Ryuya who's had a crush on Anzu for awhile, but isn't Riri's subject material for good reason. P.S. Hijiri is also here, but no big character/story moments. Also contains a bonus crossover world chapter that is hilarious!

This is where the heart of the series really starts to shine and we get to see the influence Anzu has on the people around her, even though she's a "normal looking gamer cat lover" not a blinding beauty like Saki, athlete like Junta, super scholar like Kazuki or outrageously rich like Hijiri (or, you know, magic like Riri). I also like that Anzu is starting to really understand Riri's "experiment" and the things it doesn't change or manipulate so she can start to trust the friendships she's been unknowingly building. So sad I only have one volume left!

Content notes: Mild, infrequent swearing at most. On their date, Rio wants to hold hands with Anzu and kisses her on the cheek, but she treats this like a little kid misbehaving, . Several jerks get their come-uppence (usually via book), but no lasting damage.

*high-pitched squeal* Can you tell I am very much enjoying this manga? Even the 'bad characters are well done and the heavy topics are handled well. Yes, it is a shojo manga, but I do like how realistic the serious situation was handled. I know author said they found it hard because they wanted it to be a lighthearted read, but I appreciate how it was handled.

Moving along to return to the romance. I would be happy if Aznu ends up with no one. Sometimes that is the perfect ending for shojo mangas like this. Both MCs (I do not count Hijiri- he is more of a friend and author isn't even trying to hide the fact that he is clearly not even in the running) are pretty good choices. I do think Junta is a better fit though, but if she were to choose Kazuki then it would be too forced. And as Ryuya said, unfortunately, the childhood friend never gets chosen in shojo mangas.

Side note, I thought Saki and Makoto had something going on there, but then we kind of never got anything more. Not even in passing. Kind of feels rushed, since I learnt that the 4th installment is the final installment. With all that is happening, I wonder how author plans to wrap up the story.

Pretty funny volume. I figured Junta was an actual friend (the trope is too common to NOT use), and it was nice to have the reunion. I’m a little surprised they all fell out of touch so thoroughly if they hung out so much as kids. Normally I’d expect a more gradual growing apart, especially since Ryuya had a crush on her.

Saki’s first creep boyfriend…does it make sense to say she’s like a child, she doesn’t know that going to a guy’s house is a green light (which it isn’t, for any young impressionable minds!!). If you know she’s naive, and realize she doesn’t know, then guess what? It isn’t a green light! Ugh. Sometimes I can’t decide if that’s just the author screwing up. It’d make more sense to me, if you want to portray him as a sleazeball, to have him saying “don’t act like you’re a child, you know what coming to my house meant…”

The more it shows of Anu’s past, the less she really seems like a person only focused on video games. She seems to have a pretty strong collection of friends…

One thing this series does really well is depict friendships, and gosh darn do I ever enjoy that. This volume gets a little wordy at times, and the speech bubble placement for who is talking and when is not the clearest set up, but this book oozes character and makes me easily forget the layout flaws. I love how it has taken rather one note type stereotypes of characters and made them something more through the relationships they build. Love love love the family dynamic being set up between Junta, Anzu, and Kazuki.
Favourite part of this volume is the discovery that Junta really is one of Anzu's childhood friends that she simply never recognized or knew his real name. In any other series I might side eye this stretch of obliviousness, but with Anzu, it has been well seeded in the series to make it a plausible action for her.

And now we have Junta's background, with a little more of Anzu's childhood!

We also have been graced with Tsukasa's sister. She's the intro to his story, though we still don't have the information yet! (If you're curious, it's all in the last volume.)

Another big element is that imp wizard, thing, is in male form and would like to experience a date. While I appreciate that it wanted to experience something a bit more human, I did not appreciate that it said they were cousins (Anzu and the imp). Cousins shouldn't date! Ick.

Overall, I still loved this volume. We got to further see how Anzu is a huge supporter and protector of those she holds dear. She deserves the world, which is probably why so many males enjoy her company.

I liked it but I’m not kicking my feet anymore. It feels less like subverting tropes and more like leaning headfirst into them. It also took a lighthearted, funny story and turned it dark, serious, and mean in the final chapters of this volume. It was an odd shift in tone.

I think it’d be more interesting if we got to know more about the boys that are already surrounding Anzu instead of continuously adding to the Anzu fan-club. Anzu is still great. The characters are all great, this just felt aimless? We’re not progressing in the plot at all. And I know it all ends abruptly with no hope for it to get picked back up at volume 4, but I didn’t realize just how little we’d get into the story before it lost steam completely.

"Hoshino is someone I feel safe around. That's enough."

My heart.
I love this series so much.

I'd honestly be okay without a romantic ending. The Anzu/Kazuki friendship is developing so beautifully, and his acknowledgement of how they support each other is just perf. Romance would be great too, but the focus on the other types of relationships is done super well.

The Saki/Anzu friendship... So good. Girls supporting girls, yesssss.

Also really happy about the Tonta reveal. Whew. Makes me a lot less unhappy about Junta's involvement.

More all around weirdness in this volume. The weird little bonus story was... something. Besides that, I'm kind of impressed how the anime is pretty much a one to one adaptation of the manga as far as I can remember. A lot of the time you'll get quite a few details that's been changed for the anime adaptation, but it's pretty much beat for beat the same thing. This does mean that I'm getting a little bit bored, because everything is so similar. I think the only thing I can think of that's been changed a lot is the game elements used to explain things in the anime.

This manga is so underrated. Please read this. This is probably my favorite volume so far. I feel sorry for Saki. This is real life and there’s always awful men with worst intentions.

Anzu is a great friend and character. She’s not like those characters who are obsessed with getting into relationships or hot boys. She loves games, her cat, and chocolate. And is PROTECTIVE towards her friends. It’s a short series and I’m sad that volume 4 is the last volume ://

I'd say Anzu carries the whole story with her sometimes buff shoulder. She has so many good points, from her goofy way of doing things to how she marches along her beat without paying much attention to what the others are doing in the background. Girls deserve more in this story. Even though this is meant to be a romantic series if RiRi has any say in it, with how Anzu is, I don't think there's a definite ML, which I love!!

¡Aaaawww!

I don't like the new guy at all... It may just be me and the main gal, but his pretentious attitude rubs me the wrong way. I can't see the sincerity in his work and feelings yet. It will take some time.

I was a little disappointed because there were a few curse words in this one and a few sexual jokes. It was still teen friendly but not as good as the first two books. Also there is yet another love interest. I'm worried that the fourth book won't be able to offer a satisfactory ending.

I love the extra depth and connection we now have with Junta! I kinda suspected it a couple times, but it wasn’t so obvious that it took away from the twist. I appreciate that!!

I actually really like the serious turn it took with Saki’s backstory too. Shows this story isn’t just a fluff piece!
