After trumpets of the apocalypse proclaim the fall of humanity, vampires arise from the shadows to rule the earth. Yuichiro wants just one thing—to get revenge by killing each and every vampire.
Having seen Yuichiro’s past, Mikaela opens his heart and accepts becoming Yuichiro’s new demon. But Shikama Doji attacks, trying to keep them from joining forces! Kimizuki, Yoichi, and the rest of Yuichiro’s friends come to their rescue just in time, allowing them to complete the ritual. Now that Mikaela has become a demon and Yuichiro’s new Cursed Gear, do they finally have the power to stand up against Shikama Doji?!
“Close your eyes and say my name. Call me with your heart.” “Take my hand, and let’s be together. Become my demon” Aaaahh! It’s so nice to have Yu and Mika properly reunited again! And Mika’s new demon form…well, more on that in the spoiler section.
I will admit, the first time I read this I found it a little weird that they don’t even hug. Because, even if you read them as just “family” (which anyone following these reviews will know I don’t), “I thought you were dead, but now you’re back” is one of those occasions where it is socially acceptable for bros to hug, right? But then I realized that having them hug (or kiss) here, while cute for the audience, might seem a bit superfluous to them. These two have been running around in each others’ souls/subconsciouses for multiple chapters, and demon-Mika just ate Yu’s desires and had a bunch of his memories dumped in his head. Given that, this: [Mika] “There’s so much we have to talk about. Especially our future.” [Yu] “Yeah! But…” [Mika] “Right. Now’s not the time for that. We have to take out the First.” And this: [Mika] “Yu?” [Yu] “Hmm?” [Mika] “I promise I’ll protect you.” [Yu] “And I’ll protect you too.” [Holding hands] “Let’s go back.” …are actually kind of perfect.
I hope I’m not reading too much into this too early, but I also liked the way that Shinoa seems to be coming to terms with Yu only loving her as a friend. She handles it very maturely, even if her “test” is a bit juvenile: As a result she’s able to respond to Mika suspiciously watching the “shadow players” Guren, Krul, Mahiru, & Ferid, with: “I understand the feeling. Don’t trust anyone. Stay wary, and protect Yuichiro.”
I’m also glad Mika told Yu off for thinking about dying after Mika had gone to the trouble of sacrificing himself for Yu - ‘cause that is a very unhealthy level of co-dependence. [Yu] “Being all on my own was really, reeeally hard.” [Mika] “I get that. But still, don’t do that!” Yu, that bit where you say you need your friends to love you because you can’t love yourself? Please get some therapy when this is all over – I’m begging you!
Also, a bunch of angels show up who seem to be referring to Mika as “the cursed child” whose revival was forbidden, indicating that his existence and probably Yu’s are some kind of “crime against Heaven”. Yikes.
On a lighter note…Mika objecting to a possible new pet-name is adorable: [Yu, noticing Mika staring into the sun, apparently mesmerized] “Mika! Hey, Mika!” (no response) “Mika-poo!” [Mika, turning] “Excuse me, ‘Mika-poo’? What the heck?” [Yu] “Well, you had this weird, troubled look on your face. Whatcha thinking about?”
Seriously, can I safely put this series on my LGBT+ shelf yet? Please?
Spoiler discussion, including theory on what governs the appearance of demons: - I may be wrong, but I think the way demons in this story look reflects their self-image and how they think about themselves more than it does what they looked like when they died as vampires. My evidence of this is mainly Mika’s two forms. At first, he looks like he’s de-aged back to 12 or slightly younger; even in his “perfect world” hallucination he and Yu are that age. I think that this represents for him the point before he made the mistake of selling his blood to Ferid, the mistake that separated him from Yu, got their family killed, and got him turned into a vampire (which he hated). It reflects a more innocent, hopeful version of himself, before the latest load of trauma. After Mika agrees to become Yu’s demon, he ends up looking the same age as when he “died”, but just a bit taller and more handsome. My theory is that this is how Yu sees him, which Mika received along with Yu’s desires and memories. After all, we know he loves Yu and would do anything for him, and we also know Yu’s thoughts about vampire-Mika were always more positive than his own! Perhaps Mika has actually accepted that. As for the other demons, they tend to either look child-like or like super-sexified adults. The latter I suspect reflects those who were full-grown vampires going: “Well, I’m a demon now. I’m supposed to be tempting. So therefore…” Asuramaru, though, is an interesting case of the former. The reason I’ve been referring to that demon as “they” instead of “he” is because Asuramaru’s clothing and hairstyle are quite feminine, and I’ve never seen them use a gendered word for themself. My working theory is that the ability demons have to shape how others see them to match their internal self-image is something Asuramaru used to craft a more gender-nonconforming persona than he/they were able to manifest in their/his human or vampire lives.
- The bit where little-demon-Mika is trying to find out what their connection is to the First and is annoyed to discover Yu also has a big chunk of his memories missing is really funny. But Yu tells him: “I totally remember the last 16 years. And about how I thought you’d died…and how I desperately tried to survive so I could get revenge for you. But then right when I find you again and think I’ve finally got you back… Bam! You’re suddenly a little kid and don’t remember the last 16 years. Ugh, do you know how much of a pain that is?” [Mika] “That does sound like a pain, yes. For both of us.” [Both] “Hmmm….” [Yu] “Oh well! We’re both alive and together, so what else matters?” [Mika] “It’s weird. I don’t remember you at all, but I have that same feeling.” … [Yu, offering his hand] “These last 16 years are way more important to us [than whatever our ultimate cosmic purpose was supposed to be]. Right? Don’t you agree?” [Mika] “I…I do agree. Oddly. Even though I don’t have any memories of them.”
- Mika may be a demon now instead of a vampire, but Yu is still the one who can bring out that rare soft smile of his: First when he tells Mika they have a whole new family that cares about them waiting for them to come back, and then when Yu says Mika should try possessing him (which the demon is wary about) because: “We can work together on a whole new level, now! We should try stuff and figure out what way works best!”
- Mika is DEFINITELY still the brains of the operation, too. This happens: [Mika] “I devoured a ton of your desires, right?...When I did, I ate up a lot of your memories, too. Now I’ve got a lot of memories in my head and they’re all jumbled up. It’s hard to tell which are yours and which are mine….Whooaa! It’s like memories in stereo!” …which has to be very confusing. But Mika immediately starts sifting through them to try and find clues about what their enemies and allies are up to in a very serious and focused way. Meanwhile, Yu’s idea of testing their new telepathic connection is to send Mika an embarrassing memory of a time back at the orphanage when Yu kept trying to bust into the bathroom while Mika was pooping! And Mika’s like WHY WOULD YOU SHOW ME THIS??
- Are “sentient swords with eyeballs” a thing in Eastern mythology? Because Mika’s cursed gear form looks a lot like Hua Cheng’s scimitar from ‘Heaven Official’s Blessing’. Or is that just another hint about where this central relationship is going?
- Mika and Shinoa are quite right not to trust Guren and Mahiru. We know Guren and Ferid had a deal (which they didn’t discuss with Krul) that led to Yu escaping Sanguinem and Mika…not escaping. And Guren also planned on Mika sacrificing himself for Yu (again) and becoming a demon. Mahiru had a deal with Krul (who had some kind of plans for Mika’s seraph), but was working on cursed gear well before the war between humans and vampires even started. On the other hand, Shikama Doji says to Mika: “It’s too soon for you to become Yu’s demon.” Huh. So that was part of his plan TOO, but not YET? And then: “Yu! Mikaela! Stop! You can’t use that much power yet! Merge any further and THEY’LL notice!” THEY turn out to be angels, who announce: “The sinner is found…The great sinner who defied holy law to revive the cursed child and brought blight upon the entire world has been found….Execute the fallen angel.” Sooo…Great.

The first half is satisfying with the end of the Shikama Doji fight at Mika becomes Yu's demon and becomes a cat boy in a regal uniform. The ending of the fight was enjoyable too. The retreat and capture of Doji shows he's not getting off scot-free which flows greatly in this volume's equally satisfying second half. The second half may be less intense but you get some sweet MikaYuu moments. There is also setup as Ferid, Guren, Mahiru (who I still dislike), and Krul are revealed to have gotten one over on Saito's plan which is all done through the cute MikaYuu dealio of Mika watching Yu's memory and gushing over protecting him. It should be noted the arts taken a bit of a downgrade. Its varied in its screentones which I enjoy. But its clear that Yamamoto is struggling as he draws more blank faces or uses less detail in general. That is not to say this still isn't visually pleasing as its still beautiful and the fun use of gradiented screentones (and varied use of them in general) is still there.

Mika successfully becomes Yu's demon in this and then they have a fight against the First.
Insane, absolutely insane yet again how deep this relationship runs. Them both promising to protect each other and holding hands.😭 A hug and/or kiss would have worked perfectly here too but okayyy.🙄
Mika's new demon form is very oh my goddd. Ate, devoured, peak character design, 100/10 no notes.
Now with Mika as Yu's demon, he has his memories back but they are mixed in with Yu's, making it very confusing. Add onto it that Mika eats Yu's desires, thus reading his mind too. Meanwhile Yu doesn't have a care in the world now that he has his Mika.😭
Mika is absolutely the brains in the relationship because he rightfully does not trust Guren and is already planning how he's going to get to the bottom of the mystery of wtf Guren is even doing.
Also Mika is soo boyfriend lmao. When he went into Yu's memories, he saw how Yu kept trying to die and Mika went off about how that's not good because he sacrificed his life for him. He needs to bitchslap him with his tail for being reckless fr.
All the traumatizing scenes to get here but I'm so in love with Mika being Yu's demon. Yu talking about how they can work together even better now is so true and especially with Mika able to manifest in the real world? Also his sword looks cool asf and it was wild when it had the eyeball on it going 👁️. Gotta say it is confusing to me though because what happened to Asuramaru then?
Shinoa needs to admit defeat now because truly so embarrassing.💀 Also Ferid showing up at the end for vampire road trip part 2 lol.
Not 100% crazy about the change with Mika but I'm at least glad he can manifest a corporeal body. I'm going to miss him lovingly snacking on Yu's body. I really wish there would be some true boy love between the two; they deserve to be together. I mean Mika has confessed and Yu has admitted he loves having Mika suck on him so...
This is another don't-you-feel-bad-for-Lucifer kind of stories. I see that parallel with the First who is a fallen angel. Truthfully, I do feel for him cause it seems he just wanted to resurrect his kid, a sin, and was trying to create life whether angel or human to support those efforts, also a sin apparently. The big moral of the story is communication is essential!! In this volume you really see everyone has their own agendas which might not necessarily needed to have resulted in this all-out battle if folks had just shared their struggles with eachother. Maybe. Just maybe.
But I digress. I'm a huge fan of the series and was so happy to stumble across the manga after the one season of the anime was done without any additional seasons, but I really hope some studio will pick this up again and roll with it as long as the manga is published. It really deserves that. The long awaited full production of Fruits Basket gives me hope we will see something similar with Owari no Seraph.
There’s been a lot of exciting, intense books in this series, but this one is a particularly good one. Yu and Mika really came together to fight the First. Shinoa, Kimizuki, and Youichi got to do dashingly heroic things to help them. The First reveals that he may have his own reasons as sympathetic as anyone else’s for what he’s done. Maybe quite similiar, too. Never has been closer to his vampire children nor at greater odds. Never have they been brought so close together as they have been by their angry need for each other. At last Mika understands Yu’s devotion to Guren. This doesn’t make Mika trust Guren any more. Guren and Ferid have a part to play which has yet to revealed, but the curtain is about to rise.
Beautiful, filled with compelling characters who drew me into their conflict, offering a measure of climax and closure which draws us to closer to the finish (or gives the illusion of doing so), this was a vibrant, satisfying read.
So we finally see the First defeated and it seems that all of the plans and backstabbing were all leading this the First being captured. But we also get hints that there are other players in this game or at least another objective as the First seems to be ready to explain what he was doing all this time. I do like the idea of Mikela becoming a demon and becoming Yu's new sword while I wished he would have kept Asuramaru but still this is a nice change and helps with their friendship.

Ay no!
Well it's all coming together! And with the promise of the "truth" being finally revealed in the next volume I'm getting super curious, well, I'm also being cautious, the real truth has been told a few times already!
4,25 actually really liked this volume, i think it‘s my favourite from the series so far. i love mika so much, and i actually didn‘t hate yu this volume, which is very rare.
