Everything has a price. Even legends…

No one can keep a secret like young Remy Farthington. To the people of Frelpston, he's just the shopkeeper's boy—quiet, kind, and scarred. That’s why he’s the perfect caretaker for the three black-market phoenixes caged in the shop’s basement. Soon, one of the phoenixes will be reborn and Remy can collect the down–a prize worth a king’s ransom–just like his adoptive father wants.

That was the plan. Until one of the birds speaks to him.

When a phoenix is reborn and taken to be sold, Remy sets out to save her. Aided by an array of magical beasts, he’ll cross the continent to right his wrongs.

And face who he really is.

Phoenix Down is the fast-paced first entry in a new fantasy series with heavy nods to classics like The Golden Compass and The Assassin’s Apprentice.

4.5/5 stars. Super imaginative, fun story. Some parts felt repetitious throughout the story, but overall it’s memorable, the character arcs are sweet, and the descriptive terms are perfect.

I recently read Phoenix Down by Brooke Hatchett and adored this book! Thank you @brookehatchettauthor for the free digital copy to read 🥰 All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This story follows Remy, a 13 year old boy who is a very quiet and very observant boy that works in a shop with his adopted father Clint selling knick -knacks and magical items. Many people come to them for certain magical items that are not sold in other places because they could be termed as illegal. One thing that many come there for is a phoenix feather, which Clint always declines and says they don’t have this item. Turns out they do have three phoenixes that Remy takes care of, however they are in cages and are not free. Whenever Remy takes care of them he thinks he can hear them speaking to him, but Clint always tells him that’s nonsense. One day one of the phoenixes burns and is reborn as a baby chick. Clint wants to take the baby chick to the king and his Naturalist, but Clint’s partner has other ideas and so he takes the chick himself to the king. Remi feels so bad that he didn’t stop them that he tries to talk to one of the other phoenixes and realizes that yes he can talk to them and wants to help. And so this is the story of a boy’s journey discovering he is a Speaker to magical animals and ventures forth to save a baby Phoenix, as well as learn more about himself and who he really is and where he is from.

I just really adored the story. Poor Remy is just fed so many lies, and he just accepts them and believes them. When he discovers the truth behind the lies he takes matters into his own hands and decides to do what he thinks is right. This has different magical and mythical creatures, and it’s just a heartwarming story about this boy who takes matters into his own hands and does what he thinks is right.

There is a lot more to the story than just Remy rescuing a baby Phoenix. There's also quite a few twists that occur, secrets revealed(especially about Remy) and even maybe a potential romance hmmmm? I just loved how this story wove so much into it. It's a magical adventure for Remy who is discovering more about himself, and sets a slightly serious tone throughout with some much needed humor thrown in here and there thanks to his lovely and "endearing" horse!

I really look forward to the next book! And that cover! It makes me think of The Last Unicorn animated film, very similar art style! 5/5 ⭐️

I absolutely loved this book. This is the story about a boy who falls for a girl and goes on a quest to save her, but along the way makes friends with some magical creatures who are also in need of some assistance.

Rent is the main character and he is so lovable. His intentions are good and he is shy and caring. He is definitely someone to root for.

I loved the magical elements of this story and thought it was so well-written.

The ebook was gifted to me by the author but I seriously enjoyed it so much I bought a paperback version for my kids to read. I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series!

The first two-thirds of this book is a beautifully-woven fantasy tale of a boy whose role is greater than he knows. He's as clever as he is quiet, and he loves his adoptive father; but when a girl (regrettably introduced only as "pretty" and "irritated-looking") tells him she's dying, he finds himself drawn out of his comfort zone to spend time with her - and when a blizzard hits, he discovers that somehow he has an ability he wasn't aware of. He's never far from well-written magical creatures or from people whose motivations might not align with his.

The story is written in first person, present tense, so that we're right there with the character as he learns about the girl, about himself, and about the people around him who are also more than they had seemed. This style of writing gives a sense of immediacy to the narrative - there's no backstory or exposition unless Remy is thinking about it, there are no long descriptions unless Remy is paying attention. Paragraphs are short. Sentences are terse. We see exactly what he sees, so when he makes an observant deduction, we know where he found it. When an enemy inevitably throws a wrench into his plans, we see his errors in judgment with his same hindsight.

My only problem with the story is that the final third of it changes tone. It's no longer an adventure; now it's intrigue, as Remy finds himself among a different kind of people than he knew and he must carefully navigate threatening conversations. Remy feels like he's on a game board he doesn't understand; we readers are right there with him. I realized with disappointment that the goal of his quest wasn't going to find resolution in this book, and that the sequel(s) were being set up in these pages. The paragraphs also seem to become even shorter as the book nears its end.

Still, the depth of all of the characters here kept me reading. I expect that the primary villain does more than just sneer and twirl his mustache. I'm curious enough to go find out when the next book's going to be released.

This was such a nice, sweet book... at least for the first 75%. The last quarter got more complex and had a whole lot more plot threads, setting up future books. I liked the first three-quarters a lot more, but when book 2 comes out, I'll happily snap it up.

Set on a fantasy world, there are three levels of animals. Level 3 are just plain animals (for example, a horse). Level 2 are slightly magical/intelligent animals (like a frost horse). Level 1 are really special, very magical and very intelligent creatures (a unicorn).

Very very few people (only two in the whole world, at least as far as we know in the first book) can speak to level 1 and 2 creatures. The main character, a 14 year old boy, is one of them.

The first three-quarters of the book was about that boy trying to right wrongs he unknowingly did. All the evidence was there that what he was doing was wrong, but he's a kid and the adults around him tried to keep him from seeing the truth, so it's perfectly understandable that he didn't realize the harm he was doing at the time. It was such a wonderful, nice, kind story.

The last third things ramped up and the plot got more complex. At first I was frowning over it, because I had liked the earlier part of the book so much better, but by the end of the book I was caught right back up in the story.

The one issue I had with the book was that it was written in the present tense. It kept throwing me off. I feel like I haven't written one in present tense before, but Google tells me that The Hunger Games was, so I read at least that one.

The author is selling the next book (as she had this book) chapter by chapter through Kindle Vella. While I did enjoy this book a lot, I'd rather wait for her to publish as a real book than pay for each chapter.

This book is beyond amazing. The world that has been built here is top notch. I did not know what to expect from the cover but I got better than my wildest dream. I finished and immediately went to follow the author so I would know when the next book comes out.

When the book opens and Remy and his adoptive father Clint are running a store. And they have a back section for "special clients". I really didn't know what to think.

Then Remy feeds not one but three Phoenix's. My interest was piqued. I had wondered in the title was literal or not.

Then Remy meets Ameliana. I couldn't figure out if she was evil or good. It was wonderful to find her to be a sweet girl dying from a terrible disease. Remy has to help her. That bit alone with Ameliana dying from some strange sickness and her parents abandoning her is enough to make a remarkable story.

But Brooke Hatchett was just getting started. From there we find out that Remy is a speaker. He can talk with the Great Beasts.
He can speak with the phoenix, the frost wolf and the frost horse. He names them and they become a group trying to save baby phoenix Celia.

I can't even explain all of the twists in this book without ruining the surprises. I am still blown away. The relationships that Remy builds with each character are all so different as different as each character. I honesty couldn't pick a favorite, but his relationship with Clint warms my heart in each and every scene.

I cannot say enough good things about this book and I cannot wait for the next book!

Did not want to put this story down !!! Can't wait to read the next !!

This book such a delight !! It pulled me into the action from the very beginning, and I blocked out the world while I very happily read to my hearts content !!!
Remy is a shop keepers adopted son, and he has a slight disfigurement that keeps him quiet. He reads a lot , and also he hears a lot from the patrons of the store . In this magical world, many things are very different from here.
Remy , and his adopted father Clint, have a ," secret " room , where many magical items are stored.
They also have a secret that could get them killed.
In this story First beasts are REAL . Those beats of lore, such as dragons and Ice horses, and Phoenix's......
Phoenix s have healing properties that could heal ANY Ailment.
If only a person had one ......
Of Course , Remy and Clint have found themselves in a predicament, and Remy must decide what path he will take.
There was lots of interesting characters and as the story goes on and revelations come to pass, I was thrown into a magnificent story !!!
On a side note, I am not a fan of the kindle ," vella" , so I am very much looking forward to the continuation of Remy and his new position !!!!
Absolutely a terrific read !!!

The story started with Remy, a 14 year old boy, working at a supply shop (with secret items for special customers). Things take an interesting turn when a noble girl arrives at this remote Northern town where it is too cold to talk. Incidents lead Remy to discover that he can communicate with magical creatures and then events kept escalating, peeling layers from the past and laying the foundation for sequels.

The writing was easy to follow and I feel the author did a good job of making the readers wonder about certain things, and then go "oh, that's why" later. I'd say the characters and world building were well done. I especially enjoyed the moments when Remy communicated with the magical creatures.

I'd have preferred a more exploratory type of book instead of the usual epic fantasy kinda stuff that happened at the end. And Remy is too young to be taking on the tasks that he did. It was like chosen one tropes without being explicit about it.

Still, I had fun reading and I'd recommend the book to those looking for a (mostly) light hearted fantasy adventure. This book had only Remy as the POV character, but I hope the sequels would have more.

Remy is a quiet, introverted child who suffers from disfigurement. He spends most of his time reading and hanging around his adopted father, Clint's shop. Clint holds lots of secrets and magic in a special room that keeps Remy intrigued. Remy has benefited from the knowledge gained from patrons visiting the shop.

As Remy grows older, and ventures outside into the world with Clint, he will discover danger in many forms. Interesting characters, mythical creatures like dragons, ice-horses, and Phoenix lie in wait at every turn to trap and ensnare them.

This is the first book in a series. The fact that this book is part of the Vella program is a bit disappointing for those readers who prefer to binge read a series.

Recommended for older middle school, young adult, and adult audiences, particularly in the fantasy and coming of age genres.

Sigh...I started writing a review in the kindle android app . The review vanished without me being able to complete it.

I stumbled into this world by way on a Facebook ad for the kindle vella version of this book.
I ran out of vella free tokens before I got half way thru the book. I decided to invest in the ebook and I am not disappointed.
The story grabbed me from the beginning. There are several unexpected but appealing twists and a few not so great ones.

My only disappointment is now being in a hold pattern until another 15 to 20 or so vella posts and the work required to turn them all 8nto book 2...
I really hate having to wait while reading a great story...
I recommend you read this book or the vella version....same words, but if you pay you get to see further along the story.

In an ordinary village in the frigid North, in a perfectly ordinary general store, Remy lives with Clint secretly selling goods that are anything but ordinary. In fact, some of their items for sale are so rare that, legally, they don't even exist. But things change when a lovely princess moves into town and Remy realizes that he has a special gift.

Honestly, this is one of the best self-published books I've read in a long time. The editing is nearly flawless and the writing crisp and engaging. It feels very unfinished, but since I really want to read book 2 (whenever it comes out), I can't say I mind much. I'm enchanted with this world and its creatures, and I'm honored to have been able to spend some time with Remy, a genuinely likable character.

Very inventive and creative take on the attributes of classical magical creatures, as well as a few new or at least not so common creatures.

Remy is special. You get that feeling from the beginning. He can hear certain animals - magical animals, either First or Second Beasts - talk to him in his mind. And they understand him when he replies, usually alloud. This skill is rare, and those creatures with whom he can converse are also rare and hunted.

Just how special Remy is continues to unfold through the book. And there are some unanswered questions even at the end about his abilities. Abilities that other talents like him do not understnad.

Obviously, much more to come!

Great story!

Best story I've read in quite a while. Magical beasts and secrets are many. Remy has lived a simple life, raised by an adopted father. He is shy and quiet, scared by fire , he tries to blend in and not be noticed.

Clint has raised Remy as best he could. He and Remy are more like friends most of the time. But Clint has secrets from Remy, and secrets have a way of coming to lite. Raising Remy in the north , running a small shop has been good for both of them. But a day will come when Remy will be need to leave. Will Remy survive the coming journey? Will Remy find out the truth of where he really comes from?

I really enjoyed this book, though I'm a little out of the target audience. I like reading YA books, it keeps me young. I really want to read the second book, not sure how to find it in book form, is it's available or not. I read the first 40 something episodes of part two, but I'd prefer having the whole thing in front of me.

Wow! Such a thrilling adventure!

This book is at the heart of what middle grade fantastical adventures are all about! Right off the bat, the voice was strong, convincing and relatable. It was a pleasure and honour to follow Remy on this first part of his journey, and I am very much looking forward to the next book!

Very disappointed that book 2 isn't available on Kindle unlimited.

Although I loved book 1, if I had realized book 2 had to be purchased from villa I wouldn't have even started reading 1. However, if you don't mind getting book 2 through villa, I highly recommend it.

Wonderful concept, fantastic characters, and a nice lead up to the rest of the series. As a writer, I feel the story could be pushed a little further, but the bones are excellent, intriguing, and make me want more.
