I really like reading older books about horses and this was no exception - the pictures of Eventing 'back-in-the-day' are enough to give you nightmares - as it mentions in the text, some of the press glorified in the falls of the Royal couple, so you get to see some horrendous pictures - and most of the time horse and rider got back on and carried on! At least today, sense has prevailed and you wouldn't be allowed.
Back to the book and like a lot of this type of thing, I would have loved more about the actual horses. Instead, this reads more like a list of achievements, with a few little tidbits dropped in. It's still interesting, but I can't say I came away knowing a lot more than I did going in (except that Mark Phillips competed for my local Pony Club when he was a boy!!)
Still, it is a fascinating look back at the sport how it was and what it was like as a Royal trying to get to the highest levels. Definitely worth the read.
