The only way forward is farther back into an alien past…
Military Special Operators Battling Across the Multiverse. Present-Day Fighter Pilots Thrust into Space Combat. Both Teams Waging an All-or-Nothing War to Reset an Altered Timeline.
Still trapped decades in the past, Vaughn and his band of military pilots and SAS special operators battle the Necks across the multiverse. Our heroes now wield powerful new allies and weapons, but the enemy robots refuse to go peacefully into the night. Attacking dirtside and spaceside simultaneously, both teams fight to flip the fortunes of battle because there's only one answer when the question is them or us.
Fortitude pits advanced alien warships, secret weapons, brave heroes, and a smart-assed battlebot against a mechanized enemy bent on destroying all life. Fans of Expeditionary Force, the Bobiverse, Live Die Repeat, and Dimension Space will love the thrilling action in this time-travel multiverse war epic.

After reading Fortitude I was struck that this is the 8th book by Dean Cole that I have read. When I was young, I loved Science Fiction and devoured all the Heinlein, Clarke, Bradbury, Farmer and Asimov I could find, and then I went through several decades of SCIFI drought. So, after finding Dean and his awesome stories that drought is truly over. Fortitude is as action packed and snark filled as all the previous Dimension /Multiverse Space books and truly begins to answer questions I have had throughout the previous four books all the way up and until the answers become less important than the new question. In some ways I’m beginning to feel like Arthur Dent in Douglas Adam’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the galaxy – the answer is 42, but what was the question – except in reverse is there truly an answer when questions beget questions making the previous question less meaningful? I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author and chose to provide my review.
I had the great opportunity to listen to the audiobook version with the veritable RC Bray at the vocal helm - great job RC.
Book 2 in the Multiverse Space series (and book 5 of the original Dimension Space series), this book continues to follow the humans and their new Lobster (who were saved in book 1) allies, as they try to defeat the Necks. The book is non-stop action as humans and lobsters go toe-to-toe with the Necks.
This book contains more of the same in terms of action. But at some point, the endearing characteristics of the series, now after 5 books, have become annoying. We still have the smart-aleck robot named BOB. But his reference to Singleton as Captain Asshole got old. Calling the second battle robot "dudette" was just silly. This was a lengthy novel wherein there was battle after battle and just when you think the humans may defeat the Necks, they fall back two steps. This got a bit repetitive.
From the previous book - the team found themselves in 1945. This really has no bearing on this book since although it takes place in 1945 - they are actually in the alternate space that had the lobster entities.
The book ended well, but a plot twist sets us up for book 3. Personally, I feel like Mr. Cole should conclude the series with Book 3; the humor is getting old, the battles are repetitive, and it would be nice to conclude the story. I will read book 3 when it comes out.
I love this series and these characters. This is a hard one if you're claustrophobic at all. Because hoo baby, that was scary. I was right there crawling around in the tunnels with the guys. And a new character! That was fun. Lots of hopping around through portals and escaping by the skin of their teeth.
One thing I think makes this an excellent series is things like this: Vaughn almost gets his head bitten off by a Neck when Bob transports them all out. When they land, Vaughn stops, checks his neck to make sure he's ok, then leans over with his hands on his knees and murmurs "thank you thank you thank you." I saw that happen in my mind's eye as RC Bray narrated. Stuff like that is what makes for good writing - you're right there seeing it happen and it feels like they're real people because they behave like real people, even though it's scifi. Tough guys get terrified too.
I hope Cole sticks with this genre even if he does want to take breaks from it, because dang he's good.
I have been waiting for this follow-up book to Magnitude. Author Dean Cole created an very compelling sci-fi scenario that had this reader wanting more. Fortitude like Magnitude are not books that a casually read. There is so much happening that it's more enjoyable if you immerse yourself in the story. (Maybe that's just me.) If you haven't read the first book, you will probably be lost and really miss a very exciting reading experience. If you like to listen to books, you are probably already familiar with R. C. Bray one of the best voice perfomers around. Read the series, listen to the Audible book, if you enjoy unique stories, this is for you.
Wow just Wow, Dean has brought us another book from this awesome series yet again with many cliffhangers, plenty of questions answered from the previous books and now he has left us with way too many more questions that leave us scratching our heads again. His story telling is amazing and each chapter leaves you wanting to read on and find the answers you have been craving for but as a good writer he leaves you hanging out there pondering what will come next and will these story lines be answered in the finial book. And of course, this will be brought to life when R.C. Bray brings his powerful voice to the audible version.
It took me nearly 2 weeks to slog through this book. I continued the series because I wanted to find out where the Necks came from. It didn't happen. The lack of respect in the chain of command bothered me. The characters move from one life threatening situation to another. They seem to survive by luck, not planning or skill. There's no downtime to regroup in this book. The wise cracking robot(s) fail miserably as comic relief. The 'Lobsters' don't do it for me and it looks like the next 'ally' is going be an octopus? Nope, I'm done.
I do think the writing has gotten better as the series has progressed.
With Fortitude, Book 2 of his Multiverse Space series, Dean M. Cole just keeps getting better and better. With each new book, his characters, stories, action sequences and sneaky little plot twists just keep steadily improving. How long can he keep it up? Who knows, but I will definitely be sticking around to find out. Give Fortitude (and his other books as well if you haven't gotten them yet) a read. You'll be glad you did. I certainly was.
Had to binge-read this in two days. Kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Recommend starting the series from the beginning for a complete understanding of the storyline as there is only sparsely retroactive explanations for earlier adventures and proprietary jargon used. I purchased the Kindle and Audible versions that work in tandem. Narration is excellent and well done,
This entire series has been hard to put down. (Dimension Space and Multiverse Space) Even a second reading to refresh the details before reading this latest in the series was riveting. (A couple of eye rolls for redundant lines occasionally, but still fun and with exceptional story and characters.) Some real laugh out loud lines are sprinkled throughout, and RC Bray is, as always, the perfect performer to bring it all to life.
Dean M. Cole continues to knock it out of the park with the latest instalment of his MultiVerse series! This series keeps getting better and better with an ever-evolving universe (or multi-verse!), great characters and action-packed sequences.
If you haven’t picked up this series, I highly recommend it!
Yet another great read here. Taking up from where book 1 ended, the action is fast and well-paced with several surprises revealed the threw this reader for a loop... definitely caught me off guard on them. If you've followed the series from the beginning you won't be disappointed with this newest entry. It's a superb addition to an an already excellent series. You will not be disappointed.
The race to save the Lobster 'verse. An action packed, military battle against the NEKs and a new ally alien race. narrator RC Bray is, as always, a pleasure to listen to. I got bogged down with long passages of space battles, which aren't my thing. but it was well written. I just prefer the discovery of alien cultures, space travel, and world building over the scenes of "things go boom."
Another very creative work from Dean Cole! Lots of time changes as the heroes try to reset the distorted timeline to save Earth as they knew it. Interesting new characters helping to return to THEIR lives. Really enjoyed it!
Excellent second book in the series. Lots of things lead to lots of action, and of course the struggle against the enemy aliens appears to come to head, (but probably not). Definitely intend to keep reading this one.
Carries directly on from the first trilogy of books and continues the war against the Necks. Lots of plot twists and turns, highs and Lows. A proper roller coaster. Highly recommended reading.
I can't get enough of this series! I'd love to see it made into a TV series although it wouldn't be as good without the voice of R.C. Bray! Can't wait for the next book!
