Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.

In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.

In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.

Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.

Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

It was a mind blowing adventurous ride reading the book. There were monsters, heroes, werewolves, vampires, all which you can think of. Great graphics and plot grabs you right from the start. A pure entertaining one. One of the best from Mike Mignola. Also, there are some emotional scenes but lot of horror.

Definitely a 5 star book. Thanks to Edelweiss and Dark Horse Books for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.

(3,7 of 5 for nice lightweight vampire hunting)
Collection of stories from the adventures of Professor Meinhardt, the paranormal scientist and somehow vampire hunter. The stories are simple but clever, in a rather lighter tone which also fits the used art style. I won't say it's humorous, but many scenes made me rather smile in amusement than frown in horror. But it was fun amusement, I really enjoyed it.
As popular with Mignolaverse collected books, there are over 50 pages of sketches. Over several comics now I found them rather boring and unnecessary filler. Sometimes there are nice stories to them, but not in this case. Still, not worth the extra bookshelf space.

Wonderfully energetic pulp comedy from Warwick Johnson-Caldwell. Just so much fun to be had in these goofy tales, and the drawings are sublimely loose and kinetic.

I kind of wish this collection had more of a structure it was way too episodic. Even episodic shows have finales this just sort of ends. It could have been so easily improved too, just have Mr higgins return at the end (maybe have Falconspeare kill him) or just have Falconspeare show up in one of the earlier stories so that there's some attachment to him (ideally both)
Still it's an enjoyable little collection. The art (and especially the coloring) are of remarkably high quality, the style isn't for everyone but I really loved it.
Also these "library editions" are really nice just as objects to hold and read and display and I'm really glad that this collection got that treatment.
It's charming and perfect for children but you don't have to throw your copy of dracula out and buy it immediately or anything.

Fun and light sort-of-horror adventure, in the vein (ha ha) of the better classic Hammer horror films. Never scary, but always a great deal of fun, and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell’s art is lovely.

These Mignolaverse off-chutes can be really hit or miss but this was an absolute treat.

The art style took me a couple issues to jive with but once I did I found it pitch perfect. It had this odd, offbeat feel to it to that felt right for the period and area.

The stories themselves are more mysterious and fun than overly action-filled or evil. It was a nice change of pace for Mignola. The heroes were often more bumbling than heroic, making the stories fix themselves rather than be punched into shape. I’m usually an action over everything kinda guy but the follow-the-story-where-it-goes really worked well here. And the art meshed perfectly with that format.

Wonderful collection.

Mamy w tym tomie całe 3 części cyklu: “Meinhardt and Knox”

tom 1:
"Mr. Higgins Comes Home" to hołd dla klasycznych filmów o wampirach, pełen humoru i emocji. Mignola i Johnson-Cadwell stworzyli dzieło, które bawi się konwencjami gatunku, oferując jednocześnie lekkość i głębię. Pomimo przewidywalnej fabuły, komiks urzeka specyficzną kreską i nieoczekiwanymi zwrotami akcji.
Warwick Johnson-Cadwell nadaje komiksowi unikalny, groteskowy styl, który idealnie pasuje do tonacji opowieści. "Mr. Higgins Comes Home" to krótki, ale satysfakcjonujący komiks, który z pewnością przypadnie do gustu fanom gotyckiego horroru i twórczości Mignoli.

tom 2:
"Nasze potyczki ze złem" to kontynuacja pełna humoru i refleksji. Mignola i Johnson-Cadwell zręcznie łączą klasyczne motywy grozy z nieoczekiwanymi zwrotami akcji, tworząc unikalne historie, które bawią i skłaniają do myślenia.

tom 3:
"Falconspeare" to mistrzowska kombinacja horroru i humoru, osadzona w mrocznym, wiktoriańskim klimacie. Mignola i Johnson-Cadwell dostarczają czytelnikom emocjonującą opowieść pełną napięcia, zaskakujących zwrotów akcji i sympatycznych bohaterów. Choć kreska może budzić mieszane uczucia, doskonale oddaje groteskowy urok historii.

Komiks, mimo swojej krótkości, oferuje głęboką i intrygującą fabułę, która zachęca do refleksji nad naturą zła i poświęcenia. "Falconspeare" to dzieło, które z pewnością przypadnie do gustu miłośnikom gotyckiego horroru i twórczości Mignoli, łącząc klasyczne motywy z nowatorskimi pomysłami w niezapomnianą całość.

I got real Fearless Vampire Hunter vibes from this collection of stories - we have a similar team of vampire hunters that manage to be professional and inept in turn without feeling out of character, as they deal with a variety of challenges from beyond the grave. The stories have some interesting takes, with the second and third volumes in particular being creative approaches to what can be a played-out genre. While never played fully for laughs, there's definitely more of a feeling of lightness in these stories, even as they deal with grim topics. It's a weird balance, but it works, and the art manages to capture that feeling as well.
If you're a fan of period Vampire Hunters finding themselves out of their depth but muddling through anyhow, this is a perfect collection for you.

When i saw this book i decided directly to get it. Oversized Mignola artwork is always a must, or so i thought. Then i found out he ownly does the story together with Warwick Johnson Cadwell, who does the artwork. Which is a really nice cartoony style and fantastic in its own way, just not what i expected. The three stories in this hardcover are gothic horror, but focused on humor, which is quirky but funny. All stories end rather abrupt, and the entire book was finished under 1 hour, but this was a fun book nontheless.

This was such an odd little series. I read the first story as a stand-alone before discovering the collected edition. The tone is off-beat; the hunters are successful more by luck and circumstance than skill, even though they are advertised as “monster hunters extraordinaire.“ It almost has a comical sense to it, until the final story, which is bleak and tragic. The art was unique, but not something I particularly enjoyed.

The artwork is phenomenal, bendy yet angular, and interior castle spaces are filled with delightful occult decorations. Most of the stories ended rather abruptly or seemed like a page was missing, but I still look forward to seeing more of this crew and learning their stabby backstories.

Small collection of short stories about vampires, werewolves and the like.

Inventive and Mignola-esque. "The end" is always around the corner. The stories are involving and well told. The art, on the other hand, is sloppy and somewhat childish. It serves it's purpose, but barely.

In one word this book is simply fun. The art is charming, the stories are exactly what they need be, with well timed humour, horror and endings, making this nothing but pure fun to read.

It felt a little lower stakes than typical Mignola stuff. A little sillier. It was ok. Not my favorite.
