You are cordially invited to a crime extravaganza: two con artists join forces to pull off a huge scam, posing as a couple at the poshest wedding in town.
She wants to steal the ring. He wants to steal her heart.
Single, broke, and about to be kicked out of her London flat, Cat feels out of touch with her friends, who all seem to be getting married, having kids, and generally moving on with their lives. Driven to desperate ends by a recent spate of expensive destination weddings, Cat has turned to picking the pockets of her fellow guests--but only if they get handsy or otherwise deserve it. And no one is any the wiser, except for bartender Jake, who has his own less-than-legal side hustle.
When her best frenemy Louisa announces her engagement to one of the wealthiest men in London, Cat is of course invited to attend. Newly unemployed, she can't help but notice that Louisa's priceless engagement ring sure would solve a lot of her problems. But a jewel heist is bigger than anything she has ever attempted, and so she recruits Jake to be her plus-one.
From a lavish engagement party on the Thames to a bachelorette weekend in Palermo, Cat and Jake play cat and mouse with each other and their marks in a romantic charade for the ages. But who's to say what's real and what's fake, when love and money are on the line?
One of those books that I think would make a terrific film. You have to buy the premise, which would work perfectly in an hour-and-a-half films: Cat, our heroine, down and out after busting her butt trying to make it in the grind of the corporate world, to the extent of squashing her love of art, has a secret outlet: she robs obnoxious rich people.
And she has one sympathetic ear, Jake the bartender. He in his turn is also a con artist, and again, only takes from those who can afford it, and deserve it.
Meanwhile, Cat finds herself in contact with her university roommate frenemy, Louisa, who is rich, gorgeous, and now engaged to the perfect man (also rich and gorgeous), and wants Cat as part of the wedding party. Cat knows that that means expensive clothes and gifts, when she is, as they say in the UK, totally skint.
Meanwhile, it turns out that Louisa's soon-to-be wedding ring is worth ten million dollars. But the finance makes her wear a phony for insurance/safety reasons. But what if Cat and Jake, working together as partners--nothing more--could use the wedding as an excuse to make the heist of a lifetime?
Along the way, Cat gets to know the bridesmaids better, one of whom is just awesome, and also ends up meeting Jake's family, which is not at all what she expected. She has a hands-off relationship with men, including her dad, but she does care for him...
Basically, I found this first novel really engaging, very strong and visual with complex characterization, especially the subordinate characters. The pacing toward the end was a bit sustained, bent around the now de rigueur Bad Moment, but then picks up again, and ends abruptly, leaving tons of threads dangling. Like, does Cat ever give her art a second thought? And we go from there.
That said, the read was still terrific, I enjoyed the story overall, I'd love to see a stylish, tight version on the big screen, and I really look forward to seeing what this author writes next.
I just couldn't get past the premise of the book. I get it, she isn't stealing from good people, and she's not taking a ton, but idk that I wanted my FMC to be a thief for very bland reasons. If an FMC is going to be a thief or villain for reasons I want them to be BIG and BOLD, not because she needs $ for a dress for a wedding of a person she doesn't even like.
I absolutely LOVED this debut! Laugh out loud funny and oh so fresh, the story follows single and broke Londoner, Cat as she has to scrounge up money to attend yet another friend's wedding. On a strange whim she ends up making a deal with a cute bartender she knows who shares her affinity for cons.
Together they agree to fake date, attend the wedding and hatch a plan to swap out the brides ridiculously expensive diamond ring for a fake. Full of great chemistry, quirky characters and fun cons, this was just a pure delight to read! I can't wait to see what the author writes next!
Recommended for fans of authors like Katy Birchall, this was also good on audio narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd with a note from the author included at the end. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy and @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review.
I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately it missed the mark. I was so close to dnf'ing it on multiple occasions while reading it due to the fact that: 1. Cat (FMC) was annoying and judgy. I didn't like how she comes from a good education but felt the need to do the heist instead of getting a job like a normal person with a degree would do. 2. Jake (MMC) was very basic and tbh the premise said he wanted to steal her heart but honestly didn't get that vibe. 3. There is no suspense or urgency for the heist to take place as neither character have idea what they would do if they got the money 4. The ending was lackluster and wasn't wrapped up well 5. It didn't make sense that the heist would involve Cats best friend from university, like I get why she hates her but we only find that out later in the book 6. All the characters except Harper were just awful humans and I didn't root for any of them 7. The romance was not good in this book cause like 60% in they sleep together and bam are in love and then we get the conflict at 80-90% of the book and the remaining was that rubbish excuse of an ending.
I am super pleased to report that this book is every bit as fun and glamorous as its author - I usually take ages to get through an audiobook but devoured this in a day because it’s so addictive!
But don’t think that because it’s a fun heist novel it’s in any way shallow because this story also has a lot of heart and explores loss, love, friendship and financial worries, which we’ve no doubt all been through at some time or other. Whilst I’m unlikely to be stealing anything anytime soon (never say never guys 😂), I found parts of this so relatable, and absolutely loved Cat as a character, especially her little asides on all her wealthy friends which had me laughing out loud - this definitely takes the toffs down a peg or two 🤣 Honestly this was just the joy of a read I needed on a stressful day, insightful and hilarious - cannot wait for more from the brilliant @philipellis 👏
The concept of this really intrigued me - the combination of the fake-dating trope alongside a diamond heist sounded like my kind of thing, and, if altered slightly, I do think this woould make a great premise for a film. Considering the action-packed synopsis, I was expecting Love & Other Scams to be fast-paced, with twists and turns, and for me to fly through it, but that wasn't the case. Instead, I found it to be one of my more slower reads recently, with an almost plodding quality to the narrative. I also didn't find myself reaching for it too often over the other books I had on the go. Saying all of that, I did really enjoy this book as a story about old friendships and a blossoming romance, but I just wouldn't consider it to be a heist novel, as it felt as though the conclusion to that storyline was just shoved in at the end with no real build-up.
4.5 stars rounded up. So here’s the thing. I had a hard time with the concept of this one in the beginning. I don’t always jive with characters that are terrible people. And, no matter how you look at it, conspiring to steal your friend’s engagement ring kind of makes you a terrible person. But by the end of this book, I didn’t care. I wanted Cat and Jake to succeed. I didn’t give a second thought to how Louisa might feel about potentially having her ring stolen by her best friend. And I kind of thought, wow… I would totally read a sequel if they decided to try and steal something else. So while this book won’t be for everyone, it was most decidedly a win for me.
Love and Other Scams is kind of like that Katherine Heigl movie about being in all those weddings combined with Heartbreakers or Ocean’s eleven. And as I already stated, it took me a while to cheer for Cat, because I just couldn’t reconcile what she was planning to do to a friend. But I thought this book was really smartly written. In fact, I actually loved the writing. And even though I thought I knew what would happen, there were still surprises. Yes, this is a romance, but maybe I would characterize this more as fiction that features a romance. Cat shows a lot of growth and introspection, and that’s something I love in a character. All in all, I really enjoyed Love and Other Scams. I look forward to reading what Ellis writes next.
I was gifted a copy of this by Putnam but that in no way influenced my review.
I really enjoyed the characters, our main duo and the host of side characters alike. The world around these two felt well fleshed out, and while there were a lot of people to keep track of, I think they all came across as intended and achieved what they were meant to.
Also am a huge sucker for a good heist, and really appreciated the ending of this one lol. I almost wanted it to be more campy though? If that makes sense. Kinda felt like the heist fell to the wayside in exchange for the romantic arc, but I also can’t blame that bc Cat and Jake were to die for.
Unfortunately underwhelming, but pushed up to a solid three stars based on the ending. The heist elements kept my attention, but I never got terribly invested in anything else that was happening. I can se it being a fun read for others, though.
CW: past parent death (breast cancer), sexism, classism
I received an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley.

This was a really fun read, and I'm not sure why it didn't get more buzz! The con artist plotline is really entertaining, and I enjoyed the way the relationship developed between the two main characters. For context, I generally don't gravitate towards romances (and I wouldn't classify this book as a romance per se), and I couldn't put this book down. Would be a great summer read!
If you want to read a rom-com but you don’t want to feel like you’re just reading the same one over and over then this is the book for you!
I loved this book, the plot felt really original and struck the right balance between being relatable (being 30 and not having life figured out) as well as a little wacky (I have never myself plotted to steal an engagement ring).
The characters were fab and really supported the plot well - Harper being an iconic standout for me personally.
Definitely worth a read, I didn’t want to put it down!
I think what I liked most about this is that even though the main characters are "bad people" they're not hard to spend time with - you can totally see how Cat ended up where she is, and even though she is a criminal, she's not a villain, and she's not cruel. Also, I just love a heist story!
I loved the genre crossover between crime and romance! The British audiobook narrator doing an American accent was hysterical, and now I know how British people feel when Americans do bad British accents.
Wonderful! Mee Cat, she's still reeling from a boyfriend betrayal and living half a life as a lackluster contractor for PR and a pickpocket at night. When her s0-called wealthy bestie from college turns up and requests her to be part of her very expensive bridal party she realizes something has to give. Embracing her dark side and partnering with a cute bartender, join Cat as she attends the Hen Party Weekend followed by a over the top wedding. This is a great story and I especially loved the detail of the supporting cast and the conversations with some of the girlfriends. Also, don't miss this awesome author's end notes! If you love a rom com with a twist, a wedding thriller or just love a good scam Love & Other Scams is for you! #Penguin #Love&OtherScams #PhillipEllis
This was fine, but not as good as I wanted it to be. I was really interested in the premise of a heist at a wedding with a fake dating trope. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed. When you think heist, you think lots of fun twists and turns, but this wasn't really like that. It was pretty straightforward and honestly, kind of boring.
I believe part of the issues are the characters. Our main character Cat is so unlikeable that it's hard to root for her. She doesn't even really have a good reason to be a thief. She has financial issues, yes, but mostly because of her own stupid choices and not for any reason outside of her control. There's also not much development on the side characters-- I wanted more. This is especially true of the ending. So many stories are left without a satisfying ending.
I did like the romance between Cat and Jake (even if it did seem quick), and I liked the writing style of the author. It was a quick, easy read. I just wish there was more time to flesh out the characters and plot a lot more.
Overall, this had potential but just wasn't for me. Thanks to Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for an ARC copy for review.
It is a very readable book and I finished it in three days, but I struggle to find anything I really liked in this book. The characters were so annoying to me. She was friends with women she strongly disliked and faked interest in them, complained about being invited to their weddings, and in this case, even stole from her friend. That was no special treatment, since she and the main lead stole from every single person that they disliked. Sometimes it was just someone drunk or someone who had to fire someone and didn’t want him to feel like she’s not emphatic to his situation. Discovering the friend as a bad person at the end does not justify the main planning to steal from her the entire book. She complains about how expensive it is living in London and steals to maintain her living there yet doesn’t move to a cheaper place? Come on. The romance was ok-meh ish and it was the best part of the book. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I didn’t realize that the author was a man (even though I read the name Philip multiple times) so when I flipped to the author page I audibly gasped. 🥲
Love and Other Scams was a fun, entertaining read. This book had an interesting premise that isn't typical in romance novel land.
Cat has not had an easy adulthood thus far. She's in a dead end job that she doesn't enjoy and all of her peers are getting married and having kids at an alarming rate. The only thing that Cat enjoys is being a minor pickpocket and flirting with the hot bartender at her local bar. When her frenemy from university announces her engagement and invites Cat to be a bridesmaid, Cat and the bartender, Jake, cook up a scheme to steal the diamond. Along the way they realize they may mean more to each other than just a partner in crime.
I was a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to like our characters. What they are planning isn't exactly legal or morally right. I appreciated that the author spent time developing the characters of Cat and Jake and making the reader see why we should root for them. There were also some circumstances toward the end that made the diamond stealing a little more palatable. It was fun to watch their romantic relationship grow through lots of wedding/crime related experiences. They had great chemistry! There were some wonderful supporting characters in this book as well. Louisa, the bride, was someone we could love to hate. Harper, the American bridesmaid, was a great sounding board for Cat. The other bridesmaids were entertaining, if ridiculous at times.
Overall, this was a fast paced, amusing read that was a refreshing change from the typical romance tropes. I would definitely read more books from Philip Ellis.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group PUTNAM for the advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you #netgalley for this Advanced Readers Copy! Cat lives in London and earns most of her living by pickpocketing men in bars. She has a legit job too, but when she loses that job, she needs to think of a way to step up her income. She meets a bartender who also supplements his income by stealing, and they decide to team up. This is a kind of fun to read rom-com, very light. #loveandotherscams #philipellis #romcom #bookstagram #booklover #reader #bookblog #lovetoread #fictionreader #bookreview #bookrecommendation #readersofinstagram #bookloversofinstagram #takeapagefrommybook #readallthebooks #booksbooksbooks #booksofinstagram #bookwormproblems #bookaholic #booknerd #whattoread #readingtime #bookaddict #ilovetoread #ilovebooks #needtoread #readallday #netgalley #advancedreaderscopy #arc
I really enjoyed this book, it was a fun read, although somewhat unbelievable. i wish there had been more scenes with cat and jake, cause I did like them together but it didn’t feel like they were as far along in their relationship as I was led to believe because it didn’t seem like they had enough time together. I don’t think I was invested in their relationship as I felt I was expected to be. The planning of the heist and the plot of the book made up for it. I would recommend this to someone needing a light hearted and fun read.
4.5⭐️ rounded up for goodreads. A fantastically fun romcom revolving around a diamond heist in which two con artists, Cat and Jake, join forces to pull off the scam of the century, whilst posing as a couple at the poshest wedding.
I listened to this on audiobook and I would absolutely recommend reading it this way, the narrator was great. This debut novel was so fresh, funny and I loved the storyline, who knew I was a fan of fake dating! The writing style was engaging, relatable, full of humour and plenty of simmering chemistry between Cat and Jake. Not only that but the additional characters throughout the novel are written with complexity and are interesting and hilarious in their own way. I was a big fan of Harper and Jakes’s mum.
For someone that doesn’t read a lot of this genre it left a lasting impression and I enjoyed it very much. It literally had everything, there was great banter and dialogue between the characters yet also some sweet and sentimental moments. I’d recommend for those that fancy a mixture of romance with a little crime, fun and frolics with a hen weekend trip to Sicily, topped off with the glitz and glamour of a wedding…and some OMG moments for sure! 🤩
Reading this book was like watching a movie - the kind where you’re on the couch in your pyjamas and you’ve gone through a giant tub of popcorn and now have a vague bellyache and a very satisfying movie hangover.
It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was human and insightful and wickedly funny, and satirical enough to keep me engaged from start to finish.
Went into this with no expectations and oh my god did it show up and show out. Suuuuuch a fun read that had me glued to the page up until the last page when I said “NO EPILOGUE?????”
Recommend, recommend, recommend.
PS everyone who is hating on it likes to pretend they have a conscience and act like they are better than the main character in the book, when in actuality when you are that down on luck and struggling financially, you’ll do anything. And this book did anything FABULOUSLY!!!!!
