Forgetting your troubles surrounded by golden sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and chiselled abs… what could possibly go wrong?
For Orla , moving in with her dad at twenty-nine after a health scare wasn’t exactly her plan. Neither was finding out he’s been keeping a huge family secret…
Ready to put the entire Mediterranean Sea between herself and her dysfunctional family, she packs her bags and checks in to a charming B&B on a sun-drenched Greek island. But the vines climbing the beautiful yellow front and the glittering blue sea aren’t the only gorgeous things in view. Her neighbour, sexy writer Georgios , is in search of inspiration, and Orla’s caught his eye… if only he would lighten up!
It’s a big fat Greek clash of wills as Orla encourages Georgios to put down his pen and start having fun. Who wouldn’t love a cruise on a pirate ship, complete with rum and fake swords? Her heart melts as she catches a glimmer of a smile… but over Greek wine and freshly made mezze by candlelight, he gets far too serious, urging Orla to talk about her past. However, as soon as Orla shares her secrets, Georgios abruptly ends the evening…
The next day, confused and angry, Orla heads to the harbour to leave the island. But something makes her hesitate. Should she get on the boat and keep running from her problems, or break free from her past and let her glorious Greek summer last forever?
Sue was born in Liverpool and moved to Lancashire as a teenager where she has lived ever since. She has written three books, the third 'My Summer of love and limoncello.' will be published on March 6th and she is busy working on a fourth book. When not busy writing, Sue spends her time with her ever growing family. She enjoys walking, cinema and travelling. Her first book 'My Big Greek Summer.' was inspired by frequent visits to the Island of Rhodes in Greece. All Sue's books are available from Amazon in kindle and paperback format.
I enjoyed Sue's last trip to Greece and I did with this one too. The most enjoyable part of Sue Roberts' books for me has to be the descriptions. The food, the setting are described in wonderful detail and I go through the feeling of 'I feel like I'm there' and 'I want to go there' through every page. I think I preferred the previous book in terms of being gripped and the drama of the story, but this was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Whilst I didn't feel like I connected with any particular characters, or really liked any of them, Orla's second chance did make me sad for her and I understood what Roberts was trying to achieve.
In this delightful book by Sue Roberts, Orla needs a change in her life. That is one reason that she takes a trip to the beautiful coast on the Mediterranean Sea and will have the opportunity to enjoy some time on a beautiful island. However, her trip is not just about change. While recovering from a very serious surgery after a scary medical diagnosis, Orla went and stayed with her father. In so doing, she stumbled upon a long held secret and she needs answers.
The first part of her vacation is set in the most beautiful of environments. Her vacation location is at a small B&B, with only a handful of guests. Spending time with the guests allows Orla to find time to regroup after her experience. However, there is one guest who is less than pleasant and his name is Georgios. He is as grumpy as can be, and his only purpose for being at the B&B is to carve out his next novel. While Orla is enjoying her time with the other guests, there’s just something about Georgios that she cannot ignore. Can she traverse the wall around his heart and get him to find some joy in the time that he is spending there?
At some point, Orla knows she must find answers about that secret that she discovered while at her father’s home. Meanwhile, she is plagued by the growing feelings she has for Georgios. Will she be able to balance matters of the heart all while having a missing piece in her life? Obviously, something has to give when it comes to Georgios, because, after all, this is a romance.
I love the way our author, Sue Roberts, writes these location-based novels. Whether we are visiting France, Italy or in the case of this and her previous three books, we get to enjoy the scenery, and the sights, all while imagining the sounds and the smells of Greece.
This enjoyable story really touched my heart, and it was very easy to connect with all of the characters. It was even able to understand Georgios and how he was able to slowly come around in this book. I also loved it when Orla was able to find the answers that she needed all while having the opportunity to find hope, light, and love. This perfect summer read came easy considering the gorgeous setting, wonderful characters, and a beautiful story.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Greece is probably one of the most sought holidays spot for various people around the world.
Sue Roberts has a gift with describing every single detail of the scenery to an i.
The beaches, the homes, hotels, walks with beautiful flowers everywhere and the tasty famous food that will leave you wanting to eat or taste something similar right away.
The story starts with our heroine Orla, overcoming a life-changing moment. This will lead to her going on a hunt for buried secrets in the beautiful place where her family used to spend their summers years.
I found the story going at a slow pace, with a long awaited short or interfering romance side story.
Grumpy/sunshine type of characters are always my favourites and this couple gives that in spades.
Overall, I think it is an uncomplicated afternoon read that any reader will enjoy if you are seeking a woman's fiction story.
Wonderful armchair travel and escapism at its finest. I was completely and utterly transported to Kos, and feel I now have a good idea of what there is to do on the island.
I'd definitely be up for a trip on the pirate boat at any rate, as well as flirting with some gorgeous guys, not so sure about yoga on the beach at stupid o clock in the morning though.
But basically I would have loved to have been Orla for the majority of the book, I mean not the initial bit with the health scare, nor the secret that needs to be uncovered, but the exploration of Kos side of Orla, I'd have happily swapped places with.
Another stunning Greek set story from Sue Roberts.
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This was my first book by Sue Roberts and after searching other book titles by this author, and reading reviews, I was excited to begin. She gets plenty of praise for her descriptions that carry the reader to the locations she writes about. I can attest to that in Take a Chance on Greece. Not only does she provide vivid descriptions of Greece, she also makes your mouth water for the food. I enjoyed her character development, which left me wanting to hear even more to hear more from the guests at the Kos B&B. I enjoyed the main character and her quest to find her roots and enjoy traveling. Despite all of these positives, the story dragged on slowly. I kept waiting for it to finally hit a sprint, but it never did. Other reviewers have mentioned the same. One of the characters was an author that was having a hard time writing his current work. It made me wonder if he was symbolic of Robert's own trouble. The book is still a solid three stars as it made me want to read one of her earlier works for the travel fun inside. Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC and opportunity to provide an honest review.
I always find it awkward to review a book I didn’t really enjoy - especially when I’ve read and liked so many by this author.
I did like having a front row seat to Orla’s growth and loved how the truth of the secret set her free. The characters in Roberts’ books are always well-developed and she is a master at placing her readers in the setting; this book was no different. I always come away from one of this author’s books feeling like I’ve just had a mini vacation.
For some reason, I had trouble staying interested in this narrative. I found the writing didn’t flow as well as any of her previous Greek novels and I also couldn’t identify with this protagonist and the motive behind some of her actions. However, it won’t stop me from reading Roberts’ next Greek journey!
I was gifted this advance copy by Sue Roberts, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
If this story doesn't make you want to hop onto the next plane heading to Greece, I don't know what else will! You can't help but get swept up in the idyllic settings and visualise the sun, sea and people. Perfect escapism that will uplift and empower you!
I just read Take a chance on Greece by Sue Roberts After successfully getting through brain surgery, Orla decides to get out and travel. Her trip to Greece spurred by the happy memories she had there as a child with her parents and the family secret she just discovered. The cute B&B she finds herself in, is the epitome of Greek charm. The sun-kissed beaches and the drinks are flowing. The view from her balcony is amazing, especially when her neighbor is out writing on his…. Shame he is so serious! Spending time with Georgio and living the Greek lifestyle, really suits Orla and she feels more than ready to approach the reason she is in Greece in the first place. As her feelings for Georgio grows, so does her confidence that she can be more than she ever knew possible and her whole future isn’t set in stone. Such a sweet and touching story. The writing was lucid and never a dull moment. I did feel the relationship between Georgio and Orla seemed a little forced at times but over all, I enjoyed the build up between them. I loved the location of the book. I always found Greece to be a beautiful place to be and the author did an excellent job of capturing the beauty and essence of the country. It’s a great summer beach read, nothing overly complex in it but a solid read.
4 stars! Delightfully whimsical and a real down to earth feel good read! If you love a book that will make you smile and warm your heart, this is the book for you!
Thank you netgalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
A health scare can make you rethink your priorities and life For Orla, an unexpected find whilst recovering adds extra strife. Recovered, she decides on holiday to go away And so to Kos she goes to stay.
An idyllic island setting - with places I now need to explore - With new friends, foods, experiences and so much more. What a fantastic read this proved to be With so many unexpected twists you'll not foresee.
A gorgeous read about making the most of your chances Be they exploring, travelling, new friends or romances. Life can be short or long, but should never be dull, Be brave and live yours to the full.
It truly is a delightful, heartwarming read If you enjoy this genre, this is one book you'll need. For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
This book made me a little uncomfortable if I’m honest. Orla was pretty selfish and childish, skulking about instead of speaking to Georgios directly. But then Georgios himself turned super creepy. I found the descriptions about peoples clothing and scents (aftershave, who still uses that?) distracting. I think I would have rather read about Rose or Sophia. The ending felt forced and rushed.
I received an ARC of, Take a Chance on Greece, by Sue Roberts. Orla is feeling lost and adrift, will going to Greece help her, or will she run away again? A good read.
Being that I recently went to Greece I actually really enjoyed this book with hints of things I saw there and experienced myself in this book I really enjoyed it, well written and cute.
Another pleasant summer travel romance from Sue Roberts!
While the book seems to have some geographical inaccuracies, it was overall an enjoyable, easy read and will definitely make you want to go to Greece 🇬🇷
A sun-soaked Greek escape that will make you laugh out loud, Take a Chance on Greece is the latest must-read romantic comedy from Sue Roberts.
Life hasn’t exactly gone according to plan for Orla. Moving in with her dad at twenty-nine after a health scare or finding out a huge family secret was not something she had ever envisaged for herself, but now that she has opened up this Pandora’s Box, she finds herself desperate for a break and some time apart from her dysfunctional family and a holiday in Greece is just what the doctor ordered. The minute Orla sets foot in this beautiful part of the world, she finds herself bowled over by the food, the surroundings and her sexy neighbour Georgios, who looks like he has just stepped out of a romance novel! Writer Georgios needs some inspiration and thinks Orla could provide him with everything that he’s been looking for…
Georgios is so serious about his work, but Orla’s enthusiasm and joie de vivre compels him to put down his pen and start living for a change. There’s more to life than deadlines and word counts and for the first time in ages, Georgios feels alive again. As the two of them begin to get closer and closer, defenses begin to come down and secrets come spilling out. But is Georgios ready for Orla’s stunning confession?
Orla is devastated when Georgios brings their evening to a close after he hears the reason why she has come to Greece. Unable to stick around on the island for a moment longer, Orla decides to go back home and forget about Greece and Georgios. But is she going to keep on running from her problems? Or will she find the courage to fight for what she truly wants?
Sue Roberts’ books never fail to brighten up my day and she is on stupendous form with her latest novel, Take a Chance on Greece. A wonderfully charming, feel-good and fabulous page-turner that is sure to lift your spirits, Take a Chance on Greece is a gorgeous romance about stepping out of your comfort zone, taking a leap of faith and falling in love that will delight and enchant readers everywhere.
Orla has done quite a bit of travelling already. It’s her trip to Greece the author invites us to join her on and even though the weather is perfect here too, I decided to accompany her main character. Orla is not only going there to enjoy the sun and explore a few of the Greek islands, but she is on a mission as well. One that could change her life in more than one way.
Orla ( beautiful name by the way 😊 ) is a very sociable person on the one hand. She makes friends with a lot of people very easily and she loves spending time in their company: going out for a meal, sightseeing, boat trips, dancing,… On the on the other hand, she does not mind her own company. She travels alone, goes on road trips on her own, visits restaurants asking for a table for one.
She does not like to stay for too long in one place and commitment is not on her agenda. When she does not feel comfortable any more, she leaves. Exploring new horizons and getting out of her comfort zone, she calls it. Others might have another opinion about that and call it running away…
Maybe it’s time to find the golden mean?
Orla is very determined and a bit indecisive at the same time. What she did not like at first, she finds charming later on. Of course people are entitled to change their minds, but for me I found it a bit difficult to get to know her.
Does being a happy single exists? Of course it does. You are in the driver seat and decide every direction you want to go to. I, for one, feel quite nice there. 😉 When you find your one, you happily move over to the passenger side from time to time as well. 😉
When I read one of this author’s books, I am a bit envious that I am not really on that plane, but she describes everything so vividly that I feel like I have actually been there and can tick that destination off my wish list. Her stories feel like travel guides, incorporated in wonderful feel good books.
3-3.5🌟 stars This book is full of the day by day tourist exploits of Brit Orla and the fellow travelers she meets during a sunny trip to the Greek Islands. Lots of detail of the food, sights and activities. For me, too focused on that and not enough on an interesting storyline apart from the travel experience.
I was a bit disappointed in the female lead. Orla has a second purpose for her Greek vacation but she procrastinates and fills her days and nights with anything but, so it seems like she's even forgotten! I just kept waiting for her to get the task done and I started skipping pages of descriptions of monastery visits, meals under the stars and that one more drink at a cafe or bar. Then the big moment almost seemed a brief non-event and the romantic part of the tale whizzed from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye👁.
Overall, I found this a fairly average read, with not enough romance or drama and too much focus on atmosphere. I've read much better by the author and would recommend A Very French Affair, Some Like It Greek and As Greek as It Gets. I can, however, see how this would appeal to an armchair traveler who longs to learn more about distant, sunny lands. Author Sue Roberts obviously knows her stuff and can paint an excellent description of the beauties of Greece.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Orla has had to reset her life. After her diagnosis and subsequent brain operation, she had to move back home with her father - not what an almost 30year old plans for. But whilst recuperating a rather large family secret is revealed and Orla feels the need to flee Blighty and soak up some sun.
On Kos she is steeped in nostalgic memories of family holidays and her B&B is beautiful. The hunky neighbour man should have been the syrup on the Baklava but something is always just...off.
Georgio is frustrated with his writing and the gentle romance that he began with Orla was supposed to free up his mind from writing and ignite his creative juices. But as the romance develops they both realise that this is more than a holiday fling and they may just have found their soulmate.
Orla really develops during the story. She has to realise that not everything is set in stone and plans have to be adaptable. The universe is not going to be dictated to by her! The setting is so beautifully described. I've not been to Kos myself but I am going next year and I can't wait to see if it matches what is in my head LOL.
Sometimes the romance felt a bit forced and that's why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. Whilst the story isn't overly intricate it is still worthy of a read and would be perfect for a beach read.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publishers via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Orla is happy with her life or so she portrays those around her. She needs a fresh start in life and her new beginning must happen now. She packs up and heads to Greece for a vacation of a lifetime. With her dysfunctional family miles away, she is happy with her decision. The warm sun and the sandy beach is perfect. After checking into a quaint bed and breakfast, she soon meets her neighbor, Georgios who is a writer. He spends more time inside with pen to paper writing, than outside living life. Orla begins to pull him out of his shell, and shows him there is so much more to enjoying life than just working. But who is this new found adventure really for, Orla or Georgios, and is Orla’s time in Greece just a vacation or has she found her happily ever after?
If you are in need of a beachy vacation, then this is the book for you. Pack your bags because this story will have you packing your bags and heading to Greece. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful descriptions of Greece and the sandy beaches was just what I needed. I found this story to be inspirational, uplifting and utterly delightful. The characters were believable and one’s I would have in my circle of friends. This feel-good and magical story is one that hits all the feels. I laughed, I cried and I definitely recommend it.
Thank you Sue Roberts for such a heart-warning story. This was such a wonderful escape. I loved the storyline and I highly recommend it.
I was so excited when I found out my first ARC to review would be about the Greek Isles! Thanks Bookouture for the opportunity!
After a medical scare, Orla leans even more into her wanderlust ways. Brief jaunts to a few nearby countries aren't enough, so she books herself a one way ticket to Greece. It's not just childhood nostalgia that influences her choice of destination; Orla has a secret that she feels called to investigate. Orla quickly makes herself at home at a quaint hotel in Kos and assembles quite a holiday crew: hotel owner Sophia and her son Theo, British friends Amy and Chloe, American couple Brady and Iris, Jack the pirate ship captain, and divorcee Rose. There is one person she can't seem to figure out: her neighbor, Georgios. Over the course of her week stay in Kos, Orla learns more about this mysterious man and more about what she wants from her own life. What will come from her time with Georgios and will she have the courage to face the secret she's carried from England to Greece? This adorable, feel-good story will give you the happy ending you crave without any of the turmoil it usually takes to get there. It's a quick and easy read that gets better as the book goes on. As an added bonus, Roberts' descriptions of Orla's holiday fun will instantly transport you to the stunning Greek Isles.
PS - A quick note for US readers: a "vest" is a tank top. I spent the beginning of the book thinking everyone was walking around in literal button-down vests.
This is like the fifth book I have been reading written by Sue Roberts and nearly all of her books are based in Greece. So this book is no exception.
This book is about Orla, after a health scare settles down in a Greek island putting a distance between herself and her own dysfunctional family. She meets handsome Greek man, Georgios, but when her dark secret is revealed, Georgios leaves her..but has Orla found her love?
In the good side, Sue's books always takes us to the places that we have never been--the vivid descriptions of the Greek islands and the beaches, the weather, the food, all makes the reader feel like they are in Greece with the character. The plot of the story was good and so is the writing and the characters, particularly the main character Orla was a favorable character. But on the bad side, unlike her previous books, this book didn't really click well with me. I found this book slightly boring but nonetheless, I kept reading this book till the end. I have to say, this wasn't her best book, compared to the other books that I have read of her. So worth only three stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
I received an ARC of #TakeAChanceOnGreece from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first book I read from the author, and I didn't care for her writing style at all. I'm not sure if all her works are written the same way, but this one was written in the first person, present tense, which made Orla's narration sound like a bland laundry list of her itinerary. There was no real emotion conveyed, even though she had gone through a traumatic experience. It was all kept very surface level. The dialogue, amongst mostly young people, sounded very inauthentic, with stilted formal language. The setting was probably the best character, because who wouldn't want to take a trip to Greece? I found myself more interested in the book as a travel guide for next year's vacation than having any real investment in the characters or outcomes. I can see this type of story appealing to a very certain demographic who is looking for something with light substance and a quick read, a British supermarket paperback with a brightly colored cover and fancy script title, just as formulaic as the plot itself. I don't think I would actively seek out to read another work by the author unless I was using it solely for travel ideas.
I really enjoyed reading about Orla's travels in Greece. As a woman who enjoys to travel this story just really resonated with me.
After collapsing at work and learning that she has a benign brain tumor, Orla decides she wants to get out and see the world. But during her recovery she discovers an old letter amongst some old family photos written to her father letting him know that he had another daughter in Greece. A sister, something Orla always wanted and never knew she even had. So she decides to go back where it all started, Kos , Greece, a place where she used to spend summer holidays as a child with her mom and dad.
Orla is staying in a small B&B where she gets to know all the different guests in the small hotel, one in particular being Georgios. A mysterious Greek/Englishman who is on holiday looking for inspiration to finish his book. In this book I really felt as if Orla had great character development. She was a wanderer afraid of commitment and in the end I truly believe she has found things in life worth sticking around for. Definitely one of the better reads I've picked up this year and I would definitely recommend to anyone needing a cute feel good story.
This was a wonderful book set in different locations around Kos Greece. I loved the fact that the leading female (I never remember names lol) travelled to try and experience different locations it added that extra fun element to the Story. I loved the amount of Greek culture that was in this book it made me feel like I was back there myself. Plus it's great Learning about different cultures. I really appreciated that the author had the lady seeking out more traditional food and experiencing they joys of the family life there it was wonderful to read. It was a very nice story line with a slow burning romance. There was a great array of characters that were loveable and well developed. I could feel the emotions of the story come through. If you are looking for a relaxing read full of Greek culture then this book is for you. It's also brilliant for those who love to travel the world through fiction books as you can tell the author has a vast knowledge. I bet she is living their now. So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating this magical story that transported me into Greece. I can't wait to read more from this author.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the Publisher for approving my request and granting an ARC of this novel.
Reading this book felt like going on a trip to Greece and wandering around its islands. The descriptive texts were so vivid and alive that I felt I was Orla our heroine and lived everything through her eyes. She is a 30-year-old woman and her life has changed between night and day. After discovering that she is ill and getting her chance at life again she decides to shake up her life and travel and see the world. However, she discovers a secret letter at her father's house that makes her decide to go back to Greece the place she spent most of her vacations as a child. There, we get to see Orla's adventures day by day living her life and exploring and of course, there is no holiday without a bit of romance and that's where our lovely moody writer Georgios comes. They develop great chemistry, share secrets, and he might be the one for her who knows?? This book was lovely and fast-paced. It had the feeling of adventure, romance, friendship, and self-discovery. It surely makes the perfect summer read and you don't want to miss it.
The story Orla is having headaches and blurry vision but dismisses it thinking she has had too much screen time. When she collapses at work, doctors discover a brain tumour. After she recuperates, she decides to take time off work to travel to Greece, to Kos, where she spent several holidays as a child.
My thoughts This story is written in the first person, which is not always my favourite. However, the details of Orla’s thoughts as she travels, meets up with new people and enjoys the sights in Greece, make for an entertaining read that I really enjoyed. The information flow is well balanced with Orla’s self doubts about her reluctance to “settle down”, and her discovery about a sibling she never knew about. Throw some handsome, single men into the mix, and a spot of romance, this is a fun and easy read.
I read an eARC copy courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher.
After a health scare, Orla moves in with her dad and finds out that he is keeping a big family secret. To distance herself, she choses to vacation in sunny Greece by herself. At the B&B she is staying in, her gorgeous neighbor, Georgios, is a writer looking for inspiration for his next novel. And Orla might be just what he needed. This is the second book set in Greece I read by this author, and I prefer the other one (What Happens in Greece). The pace was slow, the dialogues were clumsy, and the character was very often "miles away". But the description of the settings was on point, and it was a fun beach read. If you are looking for a slow paced grumpy x sunshine trope set in a beautiful sunny location, this is for you! I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I absolutely love this authors books as they transport you to somewhere else entirely from where you are reading them and you can go from sitting on your sofa or in the garden to feel like you are reading on a beach in Greece in an instant.
You can almost smell the sea air and taste the beautiful Greek food with the descriptive writing which really helps the reader to soak up the sights and sounds
I love how this author writes about real people and real issues in a very sensitive and thoughtful way as well as creating escapism and romance in the process. I would love a sequel to this to see where the lives of Georgios and Orla take them
Special thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC for my honest opinion.
I have always wanted to go to Greece and this seemed like the perfect getaway! I unfortunately found the writing style very dry (like a book report) instead of descriptive and immersive. The plot twist was hinted at, but the execution was not it. It kind of happened; no build up to a reveal, just there’s a secret letter and 60% of the way through, the author tells you the REAL reason Orla is there.
I also wish the romance was more present. It felt like it was just sub-sub plot. The characters were all so cute though! I wanted more from them! Overall, the writing leaves much to be desired, but the characters and the setting were great.
The cover art on Sue Roberts’ books are always so stunning and colorful! Orla has been through a major life crisis and decides to spend some time in Greece, where she meets a great group, including writer Georgios, who is absolutely gorgeous. Orla flits from place to place, afraid to commit and Georgios has been burnt in love. Is there a future for them? I can always count on Roberts to pen a light, airy romance in a surreal setting with a hunky man and a heroine who seems to always have plenty of money. Can I be one of her heroines??? Take a chance on reading this delightful story. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advance read.
