Georgina Daglish has been used to living in the background of her own life for four years, having been taken in by her biological father after the death of her mother - his former mistress. While Georgina feels lucky to have a roof over her head, the insults from her father's wife are something she has merely tried to weather politely. Now, her half-sister Olivia will be going to meet her potential future husband, Luther, the Duke of Southbridge, and Georgina will be accompanying her, along with their father and his wife. The only problem is that when Georgina and her family first meet the duke, it isn't Olivia that the duke has eyes for - it's Georgina.
Knowing how impossible any relationship between them would be, Georgina and Luther try to ignore their feelings, but when Olivia becomes ill at his estate, Georgina and Luther start to spend more time together. Even then, Georgina is reluctant to become better acquainted with Luther because she knows what her mother suffered, being the kept mistress of a nobleman, and she believes Luther could offer her nothing more than the same.
When a shocking event occurs, however, Georgina and Luther find themselves in Edinburgh together and it is then that their passion for each other comes to the forefront. Luther proposes marriage, thinking that Georgina will be happy he's asking her, and when she refuses, he mistakes her meaning and then offers her to be his mistress. Georgina is incensed and leaves Luther that day with a letter, explaining how she feels about his proposals.
Luther is dumbfounded that Georgina has turned him down and he goes back to his estate and tries to nurse his wounds. It is only when he is reunited with Georgina through some other people's clever arrangement, that he is able to finally express to her how he really feels and what he meant the night he proposed to her.
This story was put together very well, and I liked the Victorian setting. It was an enjoyable read.

Se la ricchezza e la posizione sociale non sono accompagnate dall’amore e dalla felicità, non valgono nulla. Io ho l’amore, che fa di me la donna più ricca del mondo.
Ciao Fenici! Vi presenterò così questo harmony: se volete un libro romantico e carico di sentimento, condito da caratteri forti con una figura femminile che nella sua breve vita ha vissuto anche il risvolto della medaglia, questo romanzo fa al caso vostro!
Georgina è la figlia illegittima del conte Dallington e quest’ultimo, alla morte dell’amante che tanto adorava, ha preso la ragazza sedicenne come sua pupilla. Ovviamente la legittima moglie del conte odia Georgina dato che è il ricordo tangibile di chi suo marito amava veramente e non perde occasione per lanciare frecciatine e denigrarla. Olivia invece, figlia maggiore dei Dallington, la adora e le vuole bene come una sorella maggiore dal momento in cui è entrata nella loro casa, diventando così sorelle e migliori amiche.
La nostra protagonista aveva imparato grazie alla madre tre lingue, a suonare il pianoforte, a cucinare e persino a come gestire le entrate economiche… insomma a essere indipendente e a sapere come comportarsi alla presenza di un uomo. La nostra giovane donna si era ripromessa di non finire come sua madre e voleva, raggiunti i ventuno anni accedere al proprio fondo fiduciario, aprire una sua attività e mai e poi mai si sarebbe sposata!
Luther è il primogenito di un ducato che discende direttamente dai Tudor! E come tale deve seguire determinate regole e imposizioni sociali inculcate dalla società e dal padre che lasciatemi dire, fortunatamente è morto, fin dalla tenera età. Un duca si deve sposare con una donna d’alto rango che abbia: portamento, modi regali, che sappia suonare, ballare e soprattutto stare al suo posto ma per loro, cosa più importante, lui deve avere l’amante! Certamente non è permesso, com’è stato per i suoi fratelli, di sposarsi per amore. Da ormai dieci anni a ogni debutto è costretto a sorbirsi figlie e madri che cercano in tutti i modi di fare colpo su di lui e ogni anno declina ed evita di fare stupide e insulse proposte di matrimonio. Ha un rapporto molto bello con la madre e vederla soffrire per le scappatelle del padre, fa ripromettere a se stesso che la futura duchessa non dovrà mai affrontare il dolore che ha passato lei. Quest’ultima, però, è una donna furba e intelligente, vuole solo il bene per il figlio, e cerca costantemente di trovargli una degna moglie. L’ultimo suo tentativo? Invitare per un fine settimana la famiglia Dallington per far conoscere a suo figlio la giovane e dolce Olivia che debutterà quest’anno in società.
Appena la famiglia della ragazza arriva dai Rosemont e scendono dalla carrozza qualcosa scatta tra i due giovani… ma non tra Luther e Olivia ma bensì tra lui e Georgina! Lei, suo malgrado, vuole troppo bene alla sorella e vuole che si innamori e lo sposi, quindi dovrà stargli lontano il più possibile! Ma lo stomaco che si aggroviglia, un calore innaturale che nasce da un semplice sguardo, lo sfiorarsi accidentale sono il preludio di una passione crescente che entrambi, per motivi diversi, cercano di nascondere, negate e sopprimere in tutti i modi possibili ma con scarsi risultati.
Certe fiamme non si possono ignorare facilmente! Ma se poi la malattia di Olivia, una cavalcata, una fuga improvvisa (ops piccolo spoiler) e altri eventi che invece di allontanarli li portano a stare sempre più vicini, cosa succederà? Non avete bisogno che concluda la frase vero? Già intuite…
Il romanzo scritto in terza persona è molto scorrevole e romanticissimo, ho apprezzato il personaggio di Luther per la sua integrità nonostante avesse un padre senza riguardo per il genere femminile. Olivia, invece, l’ho trovata molto dolce e fuori dagli schemi dove, in libri del genere, le donne del suo rango trattano malissimo le sorellastre e se tentano di accaparrarsi il loro futuro marito diventano vendicative all’inverosimile. Ma soprattutto mi è piaciuto che si ribella, a modo suo, alla madre e abbraccia il vero amore.
Bello anche il personaggio di Georgina, donna forte, bella e intelligente che non si vuole piegare a quello che, secondo la società dell’epoca, dovrebbe essere il suo futuro dato il suo retaggio.
Non mi fate continuare che ho già scritto troppo! Si legge in poco tempo, quindi cosa aspettate?? Su su leggetelo e fatevi una dose di romanticismo extra!

Since her mother died, Georgina has moved to live with her father the earl, and his legitimate family, much to the horror of his wife, and the joy of his other daughter Olivia. When the family is invited to the home of Luther, the Duke of Southbridge, with a view to his marrying Olivia, her mother is as determined Georgina not attend, as the Earl is determined she should.
Luther knows as duke he must marry, but after ten years looking, each years debutantes seem younger and sillier than the last, but to please his mother, and potentially avoid yet another dreary season, he agrees to a visit from his mother's latest selection of future duchess and her family. When the family arrives his eyes are drawn immediately to Georgina, the daughter of the earl's mistress, not his legitimate daughter Olivia.
When Olivia falls ill Georgina is pushed into Luther's company more and more.
Final book in the trilogy, and quite enjoyed it, as much for the funny misuse of words, and the idea you can travel from Somerset to Edinburgh by train in a day (something still not possible today), as the plot and sub-plot. A good end to the series

2.5 stars, rounded down. Mostly perfectly fine but it felt like a lot of created drama that didn't happen naturally based on some cringey thinking after an abrupt falling. The whole thing felt a lot like a Korean rofan webtoon/novel with the FL having "business plans" and so on. The other two books in this series were very good and I was excited to get Luther's story, but it wound up being rather perfunctory.
