“Cut off your nose to spite your face… to hurt oneself in the course of trying to hurt another.” -Cut Off Your Nose
Hello, my name is Willow, and I am probably the ugliest girl in the world… at least that is how I feel. I have one person I can always count on, my best friend Ally, ok maybe two if you count my ex-boyfriend, David. I lost my parents three years ago and my grandma recently. That leaves me with my self-absorbed older sister Naomi, and an aunt and uncle who are the greediest people I know. I just found out that my grandma left me a ton of money, the question is… what should I do with it? Make myself gorgeous of course!
I found this book to be intriguing. Nicki Grace does a phenomenal job hitting on the sensitive topics of beauty, how others see and describe beauty, and how the main character sees beauty. Cut Off Your Nose is a great example of how things aren’t always greener on the other side. Things may seem perfect on the outside but could be totally different inside. Willow believes that all her problems are due to others thinking she is ugly. Once she gets her face-altering surgery she finds out that she still has problems, they are just different kinds of problems than before. Nicki Grace nails this on the head.
This novel is classified as both romantic and suspenseful. Although both romance and suspense are within the pages of this book, I don’t feel as though they played a major role in the book. To me, the book revolves around Willow wanting to feel good about herself. This happens about halfway through the book and then the romance starts. Just as the suspense is beginning, the book ends, on a cliffhanger.
I did find this book enjoyable and will read the second book within the series, however, I don’t know if I will remember this book later down the road. I give this book 3 stars and would recommend it to anyone who wants a fast, light read with a tiny bit of spice. I would even maybe classify this as a young adult read.
Content/Trigger Warnings from the author: self-harm, emotional abuse, violence, rape, and other forms of sexual violence. Other triggers I would like to add are profanity, stalking, death, mugging, physical abuse, and sexual harassment.
