HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE BOOK FROM THIS YEAR
"Vow of Thieves" was my most anticipated release of this year and I wasn't disappointed. It was perfection. Everything that I was expecting and more. The story, the characters, the plot, the writing style, the ROMANCE...it was so good. I don't even have words to describe it. I don't know how I will recover after reading this book because my heart is torn in pieces.
Mary E Pearson knows how to write a book. You should definetly go and read it. I guarantee that you'll not regret.

I loveddddd this book!!! It moved SO FAST for me. I was so hooked from page 1. I love Kazi and Jase with my whole heart. And I really loved the found family that Kazi gets in this book. It made me so happy for her🥲🥹 and her friendships with wren and synove.
I really enjoyed dance of thieves but I LOVED vow of thieves. My love for this book is making me think I should go back and read the Remnant Chronicles. If you've read them, are they worth the read?

its been a long since ive been so obsessed with a couple. kazi and jace are literally everything i want from main characters.
i honestly kept getting aelin and rowan vibes from them in this installement, which made me realise how badly i want a crossover novel!
regardless, i know this duology is one i am going to be rereading many times in the future. this is just one of those stories that really gets everything right. the plot is super engaging, i would die for any of the characters, and the writing feels like breathing.
i sincerely hope MEP writes more series set in this world!

PERFECTION.
I loved this book. I have absolutely no complaints and I hope that Mary E. Pearson plans to write more books in this fantastic world that she’s created. I’m going to miss Jase and Kazi SO MUCH. I stand by my opinion that Pearson is the most underrated author in YA. You're all sleeping on her brilliance and it's a bloody shame. :(

⤷If you can take one book recommendation from me, this is it 😭 It's genuinely such a comfort duology :') Kazi and Jase are my everything and no one can say otherwise!! Their love for each other is unmatched <3 The found family and little easter eggs from the remnant chronicles makes me SO happy 🫶🏼 Jase being with Kazi's friend thoughhh, my heart couldn't take it 🥲 I love the political intrigue, the lowkey anxiety-inducing plot line (my fav), and the best banter 💃🏻 My girl Kazi is a baddie and Jase is highkey my favorite book boyfriend !! So just go with the vibes and give this a try 🤭❤️

“Waiting for someone else to write your history was no way to live. Sometimes it was only a certain way to die.”
I feel sad. And mad. And happy. But mostly sad. This was me throughout this book:
This book was . . . WOW. The beginning was chill and normal, just Kazi and Jase riding their horses and then BOOM. POW. ACTION EVERYWHERE AND THEN it all stops. Just like that. People are gone. People are injured. AND I WAS FREAKING THE HECK OUT.
I was on the edge of my seat for this entire book, waiting for things to happen, waiting for CERTAIN events to occur.
Also, I remembered nothing that happened in the first book. It took me a while to remember who certain characters were, what certain things were, where certain places were. Like all of Jase's siblings, it took me a while to remember who they were, and I feel ashamed.
I also got spoiled for the Remnant Chronicles again, but whatever. I know that Kaden and Pauline are both from that series, and they appear in this book. The fact that I already know what's going to happen in the Kiss of Deception now is kind of making me want to push the book down on my tbr, because the reason I was so interested in that book is because of the plot twist that happens at the end of the first book, but now that I apparently know what happens, I don't feel like I want to read it as much anymore. Who knows, if someone can convince me, I just might be interested in reading it.
Kazi and Jase's love for each other is so real and pure, and I want that so much. Jase and Kazi are so protective over each other, and when Jase was with Kazi in a certain moment, he almost made me cry because he was so protective over her, but they weren't happy tears. Just letting you know.
Also, I think this Montegue guy was a great villain. He's a disgusting pig-headed person, but a good villain.
I actually like all these little flashbacks back to moments with Kazi and Jase, they were so sweet, and I typically enjoy flashbacks in books.
Synové is still hilarious, and still had me laughing.
I also stayed up past midnight to finish this book, something I've never done before, and I'm glad this book was the book, despite the fact that I was very SAD when this book was over.
AND THAT END, I CAN'T EVEN, ESPECIALLY IN THE TEMPLE, I ALMOST CRIED OUT OF HAPPINESS (the second time this has happened!) What Jase said was just YES. INCREDIBLE. AMAZING.
I also ship Mason and Synové. Just saying.
So anyways. I'm going to go and lay in a pool, contemplating everything.
Overall: I love Kazi and Jase, the plot, action, romance, characters, and I'm sad.

My first read of 2024- and it was a success!! 🫶🫶 This was such a fun fantasy to start off the year and was a very enjoyable conclusion to this series 🥹🥹💘💘

Vow of Thieves is the sequel to Dance of Thieves. We pick up where the last book left off, with Kazi and Jase headed back to Tor's Watch. But they have no idea what awaits them when they return- a trail of devastation and deceit. They are suddenly in even more danger than before...

I really enjoyed Dance of Thieves when i read it a few weeks ago, so I was excited to see how the series ended. I've seen some mixed reviews on this book, but i honestly really enjoyed it and I think it's definitely worth the read! 🫶🫶
There were a lot i really liked about this! ✨️ I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this one, honestly even more than in Dance of Thieves. It was super action-packed and the betrayals & secrets revealed were all so juicy 🤭🤭 It was so cool seeing how so many of the plot twists had been set up since the very beginning of the series, but were only revealed now.
There was a lot of political intrigue in here, but i found it way more interesting and easier to understand than in Book 1. the world is so well-developed and i'm actually so sad this is the last book in this universe 😔😔

➵ Kazi: ugh she is such a good fmc!! 😩😩 literally such a baddie and i feel so connected to her 💘💘 She went THROUGH it in this book, but i loved seeing how she never gave up. She deserves the world 🥺🥺🫂🫂
➵ Jase: i really like him! 🥰🥰 not my fav mmc ever, but I think his development throughout this series has been great and i lovee seeing how much he cares for kazi 🥹🥹
➵ Montegue: pls go to hell where you belong 🥰🔪
➵ Wren & synove: literally such amazing side characters!! love them sm & their friendship with kazi is so so precious ❤️🩹❤️🩹

The romance was also really good!! 🫶🫶 i love kazi & jase sm and after everything they've been through in this series, they deserve the world 🥹🥹❤️🩹❤️🩹 i think the romance was better in dance of thieves bc we had the build up and tension, but i still loved them in here. The way they care for each other sm just warms my heart and the quotes were stunning 💞💞

The only things i didn't love were that jase and kazi were split up for most of the book, so a lot of their content was flashbacks or their thoughts about each other. I just wish they'd been together for longer 🫤🫤 Plus the book did feel a bit dragged out at times and i think some parts could've been shortened a bit.
“Every one of my tomorrows is yours”
“We wove our dreams together like armor.”
Overall, a very enjoyable ending to this series & universe! 🫶🫶 Definitely pick up this duology if you're looking for:

im so overwhelmed with emotions rn. all of them culminating to one, indescribable something. the one that feels like you just walk through the gates of heaven after braving a rollercoaster journey through hell. not that reading this book in any way felt like being in hell. things were just so twisty & turny, intense, violent, and bloody engrossing. the ending had me joyously sobbing.
i know this is such a generic response readers tend to have upon finishing a beloved book. but i spoke of the truth. i felt greedy when i was reading it. like i wanted to know everything asap, and i was racing through it with one sweep of my eyes across the pages. despite all the chaos of emotions i had to juggle during my reading of this book, i want to experience this duology all over again.

A definite 6 star read!! I though Dance of Thieves was amazing… but this one topped it all!! It was perfection from beginning to end and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the ending.
I absolutely love this duology and Mary E. Pearson just knows how to write good endings!! Especially in this book here!
There wasn’t anything this book was lacking! It has an intense and amazing character-driven plot, such an incredible found family, a beautiful romance and character that you’d die for!!
Kazi is such an amazing, hot, badass and smart character! She really carried this book and I love love LOVEEEE her so so much! The things she had to go through in this book… I was so scared for her but she fought through all of it. She’s such a strong person and I’m just so glad that she finally got her happy ending that she deserves so so soooo much!!
Her connection with Jase was honestly to die for! Even though they were apart for most of the book, you could still feel their love, chemistry and need to be together. This made me therefore enjoy the book even more! Compared to “The Beauty of Darkness” (which is the last book of the prequel series) where the two main characters were also apart most of the book, I really disliked that aspect.. However, Kazi and Jase just have this amazing relationship that somehow made it work and made me pine after them but in a good way (if that makes sense lol).
The found family that was created in this book made me so so happy and I was literally crying when Kazi was finally able to find herself be part of a family! It was just so endearing and heartwarming and I love all of the side characters so so much!!
It was also fun to see the little cameos of the main characters from the prequel series. It gave a kind of nostalgic vibe to it which I very much enjoyed!
The action scenes, political conflicts and in general intense scenes were all so well written! There wasn’t one boring moment in that book and I just love how much the author has improved her writing style from her previous books to this one! It was just way more enjoyable and I couldn’t get enough! I literally flew through this book like it was nothing and I just love that feeling of not being able to stop reading and Mary E. Pearson really provided that feeling in this book!
Overall, I’m really going to miss this universe and the characters! It was such an amazing ending to this story and I couldn’t be happier!

There wasn’t one boring moment in that book and I just love how much the author has improved her writing style from her previous books to this one! It was just way more enjoyable and I couldn’t get enough! I literally flew through this book like it was nothing and I just love that feeling of not being able to stop reading and Mary E. Pearson really provided that feeling in this book!
Overall, I’m really going to miss this universe and the characters! It was such an amazing ending to this story and I couldn’t be happier!

This had a very slow start for me, but that was honestly my own fault as well. I read the first book a couple of years ago, so I had forgotten most of the side characters and details of the plot, leaving me extremely confused trying to catch up with this sequel.
This normally wouldn’t have been much of an issue, but this book had about a trillion side characters, so I was fully scrambling trying to follow along, which wasn’t much fun. However, like I said, that was mostly my own fault, so I won’t hold it against the book itself too much.
I would say it was around the halfway point that I really started to feel myself get immersed into the story again and like I truly had a stake in what happened to the characters. I finally managed to feel that connection again, and once that happened I was reminded at how much I enjoy these characters and the plot!
All in all, I think this had a cool story with lots of action, but I would have preferred a little more character building, especially between the two mains. Kazi and Jase were separated during almost the whole book, which means we only got a limited amount of interactions between them, which I thought was kind of disappointing. I also expected more drama to happen between the Ballenger family, but we really didn’t get many interactions with them either.
In general, I feel like this book was a little too plot-focused with too many side characters and I think the book would have benefited greatly from more care and detail put into the important characters and their relationships to each other. Especially since I genuinely do like the dynamics between everyone a lot!

I finally finished this one - (this duology is long), and I really enjoyed every minute! I like how these are a pretty clean romance with awesome world-building and a really fun, fast-paced plot!! Overall, this series is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time!!

okay this book 100% makes up for the duology. the first book really didn’t impress me at all (mainly because the romance was so quick and felt forced, they were enemies for barely two chapters—) anyway. the burn, the wait, the longing, all worth it in this book. i loved this so much.

This series really impressed me and blew away all my original expectations! Seriously, sooo much better than The Remnant Chronicles!
✅ A LOT MORE POLITICAL intrigue and scheming happened in this book. It definitely kept me interested to keep reading and see how these characters would get out of all the impossible situations they were thrown in to
❌ MY ONLY COMPLAINT was that Kazi and Jase were separated for way too long 😭 So frustrating! Considering this series is only a duology, I would have definitely liked more time for them to be together in this book
✅ THE PACING WAS GREAT and definitely kept you interested, although I think I liked the plot and storyline of book one better. There were so many twists and I literally screamed and almost threw my kindle at one point because I was so mad at what happened… but don’t worry, there’s definitely a HEA 😅

This sequel was even better than the first book.
It was fast-paced, engaging, and addictive, and I couldn’t stop reading it!
This book picks up shortly after the end of Dance of Thieves. Kazi and Jase are on their way back to Hell’s Mouth, Jase as the Patrei and leader of what is soon to become the first kingdom of the alliance, and Kasi as the Vendan’s queen’s ambassador. Their trip becomes more urgent when they receive a message from Jase’s sister, begging them to come home because Tor’s Watch is under attack, and it is not long before Kazi and Jase are separated. Jase and Kazi will need to be clever and manoeuver expertly to take over Tor’s Watch and Hell’s Mouth again, and they need to find a way to do it before every last one of the Bellingers and their loyal followers are killed.
The politics takes so much more room in this sequel, and I loved it! I guessed the architect's identity behind it all from the start, I had strong suspicions in the first book, to be honest, but the villain was still a great one. I like that he was not easily fooled by nice words or flirtatious moments. He was aware that people were out to get him, and that Kazi didn’t trust him. I also like that the author didn’t choose to have Kazi throw herself at him from the start to convince him that she was lusting after him and couldn’t resist his charm and charisma (I was afraid that it would go this way for a while). Kazi realized that the villain was too clever for this ploy to work, forcing her to play the long game, which added scheming and twists to the story.
Kazi shone in this book. The tricky situation she found herself in forced her to use all her wits, and it showed us how clever she is, and how she can think three steps ahead and adjust when there are unplanned difficulties to her plans. She also showed how forgiving and understanding she can be, making her seem mature and older than she is, which I liked. Jase also showed what a true leader he was, he came to his full potential in this sequel, but we can also see that they will continue to grow stronger together as they lead the Bellengers.
The secondary characters were also all great, even the ones that got on my nerves for a while. They all have a purpose in the story and are not just there to add more people to the plot. I also love how Paxton became more important. Synové and Mason also made me smile, and I wouldn’t mind a little novella or even just a short story about them .
The romance is the only part where I was not 100% sold, but only because of one detail. I love Kazi and Jase together, and I am happy they found each other. I think they complete each other well and will grow stronger together. That being said,
While I tend to enjoy fantasy books with older main characters lately, since I am not a teenager myself anymore, I loved this duology. Sure, the characters were in their late teens/early twenties, but it didn’t feel juvenile or immature. Mary E. Pearson is truly an underrated YA author, who deserves to be known (but I strongly recommend reading the Remnant trilogy before this duology).

Now in love, Jase the Patrei and Kazi the thief return to hell's mouth to bring back peace. But a problem separates them during their journey. Jase now seriously injured and Kazi now a prisoner to a evil king, there seems to be no hope for them to make it out of this safe.
Unsure whether the other is alive or dead, Kazi and Jase must keep their wits among their greatest enemies and unlikeliest allies. And all the while, Death watches and waits.

“Once upon a time, long long ago, before monsters roamed the earth, all the stars hung quietly in the sky, and great cities of wonder and light reached up to meet them.”
The writing in this book is soo much better than the Remnant Chronicles. It was soo beautiful and absolutely entrancing.I really enjoyed it!
The beautiful writing helped keep that magical feeling throughout ahh

Even though they face problems, they never once whined or never once thought about giving up. They fiercely love their families and I fiercely love them🥺💖

4,5⭐️! Ein runder Abschluss einer großartigen Dilogie, die ich nur empfehlen kann! Nachdem Band 1 in der Liebesgeschichte schon recht abgeschlossen war, blieb bei mir eine Skepsis, ob ein zweiter Band überhaupt spannend umsetzbar ist, ohne etablierte Beziehungen zu zerstören. Doch dieses Problem umgeht "Der Ruf der Rache" völlig. Stattdessen gibt der Band den Protagonisten die Möglichkeit, sich individuell weiterzuentwickeln und auf dem Weg ihre Liebe zu festigen. Mittlerweile habe ich das Gefühl, alle Charaktere, ihre Motive und Hintergründe zu kennen. Besonders Jase und die Einblicke in seine Gedankenwelt mit all den vielschichtigen Erwartungen, die er erfüllen muss, haben mir extrem gut gefallen. Durch ständige kleine Enthüllungen und Spannungsmomente blieb das Buch durchgehend fesselnd. Zu Teilen erinnern die Bücher und Charaktere an eine "Das Lied der Krähen"-Dynamik, was ich insgesamt unfassbar gerne gelesen habe😍! Grundsätzlich schreibt die Autorin wunderbar bildhaft und detailliert, sodass die Szenerie lebendig wird. Hoffe ganz bald mehr von Mary E Pearson zu lesen🥰

Honestly, this was such a nice ending to this duology. Even though I'm sad, because I just wish I could hold onto the Ballengers and Torfeste a little longer. I love the Ballengers, they are freaking cool 😎. Not to mention Kazi and Jase, who are THE couple, ladies and gentlemen. I liked the tension between them and the enemies to lovers trope in Dance of Thieves a 🤏 bit more, but I can't complain about the She's my wife trope we got in this book xD.
I'm not even going to talk about Montegue and all the other little assholes. I mean haha they don't deserve this review and don't count in the end of the day anyways. (imagine an evil *hehe* from me here)
I will miss this world A LOT, but fortunately I can revisit it whenever I want, which makes this goodbye a bit easier <3

After reading and devouring Dance of Thieves, I started Vow as soon as I got it in my greedy hands.
I love love love Kazi and Jase. I love how they’re strong on their own, but even better and stronger together. I love their banter and sweet swoons and basically everything between them.
Plot wise, man...I wasn’t ready at all. This is a roller coaster of kissing and fighting and stabbing and explosions and treachery. Throw in a couple of surprising reveals and character appearances and I didn’t know what to do with myself.
Overall, it was a phenomenal story that was equal parts maddening and satisfying. Huge thanks to Mary for these amazing books.

I don’t know how to feel honestly. I feel empty after finishing this series. I was just completely sucked in to this world and I never wanted to leave. From the second I finished this series I knew I wanted to turn back and read it all over again. This book was soo freaking good I can’t even explain it.
This books character development and world building was amazing. Mary E. Pearson created such a rich world and just put the world building in there effortlessly. Usually in fantasy series I have a hard time getting into the book because there’s always world building at the beginning but this book just slipped it in there and I didn’t even notice. Mary E. Pearsons writing is flawless in my opinion.
Now lets talk about how much Jase and Kazi grew in this book and everyone in the Ballenger family. In Dance of Thieves Kazi was so angry and it seemed like she didn’t really care about anything other than getting her mission done and not failing. In Vow of Thieves she grew so much to where she’s not as angry, she got the closure she needed, and this mission became so much more than just a mission to her. Jase went from hating Kazi because she took him away from his family to loving her and would do anything to keep her safe. Jase loved and cared so deeply about his family and Kazi. Jase legit took 5 arrows to keep her safe bro like if that ain’t love then I don’t know what is.
I hated Montegue with every cell of my body. He made my blood boil. He was a good fit for the villain and he added more to the story but oh how I hated him. I couldn’t stand him for the life of me, every time he was mentioned or he was there I wanted to slam the book shut and just skip to a part that didn’t have this infuriating person in it. Let me say it one last time I HATED HIM.
I don’t know how to feel honestly. I feel empty after finishing this series. I was just completely sucked in to this world and I never wanted to leave. From the second I finished this series I knew I wanted to turn back and read it all over again. This book was soo freaking good I can’t even explain it.
This books character development and world building was amazing. Mary E. Pearson created such a rich world and just put the world building in there effortlessly. Usually in fantasy series I have a hard time getting into the book because there’s always world building at the beginning but this book just slipped it in there and I didn’t even notice. Mary E. Pearsons writing is flawless in my opinion.

It wasn’t quite as enthralling or impressive as the first book. The writing is still good and the plot twists are pretty surprising. I still love Kazi and Jase just as much as in the first book.
However, I realized there isn’t a single LGBTQ+ character in the whole series. *stares off into the distance, shaking my head slowly*. It’s kind of disappointing, honestly. Everyone’s straight, cis, and white, which is just… not it for 2022.
