The New Testament is the foundational document of the Christian faith. But how much do we really know about these 27 books? To whom were they written, and what were they trying to say?
All too often, we treat the Bible with sacred reverence, without examining its historical context. But in doing so, we risk losing its original meaning. Worse, we provide fodder for skeptics ready to pounce on our lack of knowledge of our own holy book. In Bringing the New Testament to Life, author Philip Cottraux seeks to correct that. Armed with years of historical research, Cottraux weaves an easy-to-understand breakdown of scripture with an epic narrative, casting the world that birthed Christianity in a whole new light.
From the archaeological evidence supporting early authorship of scripture, to the case for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as actual events, to how his ministry played out in light of the Old Testament depictions of the Messiah, to the ultimate triumph of a movement that faced adversity every step of the way, this comprehensive study of the New Testament era puts the reader in the shoes of the early apostles as they fought to get their message to the world. Part history book, part prose, and part Bible commentary, this groundbreaking new look at scripture will challenge and enlighten the Christian reader into a whole new appreciation for the book they call the Word of God!
Author Philip Cottraux fits lots of research, background details, and history into this fascinating book, which truly does bring the New Testament to life. Chapters such as “Why Paul Wrote 1 Timothy” turn often-heard words into a genuine letter, sent from a real person to someone he really cares about, for real reasons in a real world.
The New Testament didn’t come into being magically during the first century. And the Jesus who truly lived and died (and rose) didn’t exist in a vacuum, nor even in a purely Jewish world. The insights in this book give human purpose to parallel divine intent, and the result is a sense of true faith, held by truly faithful people, expanding across the world.
Each chapter brings new insights and points the reader back to reread the Bible, to see what’s told in the smaller passages, and how the whole fits together. I love this book!
Disclosure: I have followed the author’s blog and I was eager to read the book when it came out. It’s not a fast or easy read. It’s just a really good, really thought-provoking, really informative and faithful read. And it’s highly recommended.
