Two lovers. Two Continents. Two Cultures. One unforgettable love story.
Maita, a Zimbabwean graduate student, has returned to London on summer break with one goal: to reunite with Ade, her Nigerian ex-boyfriend. She made a terrible mistake when she broke up with Ade—and now she wants him back. On the flight to London, she meets Chris, a British gentleman who is instantly captivated by Maita and pursues her relentlessly.
When Ade rejects Maita’s efforts to rekindle their romance, she turns to Chris. As a couple, Maita and Chris are forced to confront racism, the complexities of an interracial relationship, and their insecurities.
But Maita has never forgotten Ade…nor has he ever gotten over her. Then, in a sudden turn of events, a determined Ade resurfaces and attempts to reconnect with Maita. But Chris is doubly prepared to keep her at any cost, unleashing a dangerous chain of events that will forever alter the course of all three lives.
How far will each man go to win her love?
Turning Tables explores the challenges and triumphs of multicultural and multiracial relationships—a poignant and engaging story of the power of love, missed opportunities, second chances, and the pitfalls of obsession.

Turning Tables is a great read. The story is a love triangle with changing and challenging relationships as the main characters grow and find themselves. Each character's growth leads them to realize what they thought they wanted in a partner in the beginning was different than what they learned to value later on.
The book illustrates that successful relationships are as much about good timing it they are mutual attraction. And how the tables can turn when one party is ready to develops deeper feelings than the other early on, only to have the situation turned around later on. And when the other is finally ready, the first one has moved on! Or have they?
I poured through the book in less than two days. It is well written and easy to read. Ms. Takawira writes beautiful prose and dialog. Each chapter made me want to read the next. And the last quarter of the book is a real stunner - one I did not see coming. I will leave that for you to find out for yourself when you read it.
I also learned a lot about the challenges and different perspectives that comes with being an immigrant to both the UK and US and the relationship expectations of the men and women in relationships involving people from different backgrounds and races.
What a great debut novel! Masterfully written by Alice Takawira 👏🏽
This had been such an awesome read for me! Couldn't help but notice what Maita and Alice had in common when I first picked it up 😉
This engaging novel is fast-paced, eventful and filled with plot twists about the struggles of the heart and the extent of what we'll do for the ones we love -to the ones we love.
Make sure to check it out when it's out! Oh and the cover is a killer!
I finished this book within 3 days because I really wanted to know what happened to each of the characters and how their story would unfold. They were highly engaging and although all of them are flawed, there are reasons to empathize and you'll find yourself getting highly annoyed with them and then feeling sorry for them on the same page. Love at such a young age can be so confusing and misleading and the writer captures these elements effortlessly. Deeper elements of racism, classism and cultural differences are also explored from the perspective of each character. Bravo to Alice on her debut novel.
Wow!!! What a brilliant first book! I just couldn’t put it down. Such a great plot with unexpected twists. Alice writes so well and gets the reader connected to her characters. As a reader I was rooting for the characters all the way! This will be a great recommendation for any book club as it can generate lots of discussions. Be warned, when you pick it up it will be hard to put down! Enjoy Maita’s rollercoaster journey. Well done Alice! 👏🏾
Love can be really confusing at a young age and this is where this complicated love triangle begins as we are introduced to these main characters. As one turns the pages You cannot help but go through the roller coaster of emotions that each character experiences. A well written page turner that explores the choices the characters make the very things we value but mostly the beauty of second chances. I thoroughly enjoyed this read
This read was definitely like a Netflix and chill moment for me, ‘ will just watch one episode’ and before you know it, you have watched all seasons in one sitting. Couldn’t put it down, had to know what next! This book spoke to me al so many levels, it’s good to see oneself in stories,
Maita (Bubbles) leaves her boyfriend, Ade, to attend university in America. But she wants to reunite with Ade and she makes a trip back to London to win him back. Ade was emotionally scarred when she left without an explanation. On the plane, she meets Chris, a British businessman. They strike up a conversation and there's a spark. Their lives become intertwined once they both reach their destination as Chris decides to pursue her. Maita would prefer to put him on the backburner.
Turning Tables centers on an obsessive relationship and race. This is the story of facing choices. So with a new love interest on the horizon, a kiss between former lovers, and Ade's new girlfriend there are exciting times to come.
Maita wasn't ready for commitment and leaving the country made it easy. So at first, the challenge for me was to understand her motive. She didn't want to date Ade when they first met. She wasn't attracted to him. What I didn't like was her saying he should lose a few pounds. Maita has insecurities about her acne, so I think a bit of understanding would have made sense. I can see why he moved on – Ade was ready to commit.
We are all born with the primal need for love. Turning Tables explores when love is lost or when it's toxic. It's the perfect setting for women's fiction. I'm no stranger to toxic romance so it hit home. I would be remiss if I didn't explain my experience. I should have walked away from something that clearly wasn't working. I ignored red flags. What I liked about the novel was that it looked at the downsides of interracial dating in a way that's not been done before. For example, it's not a compliment when someone says your English is good.
Readers who like complicated relationships will enjoy this book. You'll be satisfied with how things turn out.
I finished Turning Tables within twenty-four hours because I had to know what was going to happen to Maita. I love the way that Alice Takawira created a story that contained so many twists and turns that caused enough drama to frustrate me at times. This story read like a Lifetime movie. One that you know is going to be crazy good by the end of the first chapter.
The story is about a love triangle that is full of love, lost and regret. I found that the characters are easily liked and equally disliked as the story unfold. The story includes social issues such as interracial relationships, cultural differences, racism, and the different ways we respond to those issues. Realizing that sometimes we do not know the value of something until we lose it.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. I recommend this book to fans that love romance stories. If you love twist, turns and drama this a good quick and easy read.
Thank you NetGalley and Alice Takawira for providing me an electronic copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Looking for a book that captures the attention of the reader from the onset, draws you into the lives of its characters as their story unfolds and doesn’t leave you disappointed when you read the final page, then look no further. I couldn’t put this book down. The narrative is witty, the characters are interesting and relatable and whilst fictional, aspects of the story tugged at my heart strings because they tackled issues that many of us may have individually had to deal with as we have navigated our own individual love lives or been privy to because someone in our lives has had a similar experience.
Well done Alice. Already looking forward to the next book.
This is my first book by Alice Takawira and I am certain this is her debut novel. which she did so well.
If Maita's story doesn't engulf you then I don't know what will. Turning tables is a love story about two lovers ' meant for each other'' and the one chance meeting that occurs on a flight. The author did a wonderful job of bringing out the resilience of the human spirit and how love changes a person.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the way we are introduced to the characters in the story, you really get a sense you know them well. I appreciated the writing style. It’s a classic love story, boy meets girl , boy falls in love with girl and it all goes a bit wrong. You don’t appreciate what you have till it’s gone and when trying to get it back things can get messy. I hope there is a part 2 so I can find out what happens to some of the characters.
Well I will say overall the story and plot was pretty good. The execution was off. The message You dont know what you've got until its gone is basically the plot. Maita played some nasty games, making her very unlikeable. The last few chapters is the reason for the 2 stars.
I am always disappointed when people get friends to read and review. When you have several reviews (all five stars) by people who have only 1 review posted on Goodreads - that speaks the truth and saddens me greatly
If you are looking to be entertained this is definitely a page turner! It’s a well written easy read that will keep you engaged.
The character Maita resonates with me and reminds me of the challenges I faced trying to navigate the American dream as an immigrant. This book had me reminiscing about my younger carefree days!
I am already looking forward to your next book Alice!

📜 Synopsis
Maita made a terrible mistake when she broke up with Ade—and now she wants him back. So she travels from Atlanta to London on a mission in a sweeping attempt to rekindle their flame. On the flight, Maita meets Chris, who immediately becomes interested in her. But will Chris derail her plan? And is Ade ready to forget the past?
🖋Writing Style
The writing style was easy to read, which makes the story accessible. The story is told from multiple timelines where we meet Maita and Ade starting their love story to their breakup, to a year later where Maita is looking to rekindle this said love and current events where she is in a relationship with Chris.
I loved the use of Ndebele words that I recognised on paper. However, I would have (personally) preferred for the explanation of the words used to be in a glossary at the back of the book and not within the telling of the story.
👨🏾🦱👩🏽🦱👱🏼♂️Characters
The story is told from multiple perspectives as we get the different character’s version of events.
I enjoyed reading the story from Ade’s perspective and thought that he was a genuine guy. I absolutely did not like Chris’s character. I found him to be arrogant, ignorant and quite “pushy”. If it was the author’s intention for us not to like him, then I think she did a great job.
Maita is smart and hardworking but I asked myself if she was ever ready to be in a relationship with anyone. I loved how focus she was when it came to attaining her goals but she was a terrible communicator.
🖤Plot
This book focuses on the dynamics of inter-racial relationships and we see how Maita and Chris navigate their differences. There are topics of racism that are explored as well as immigration.
The story does jump between different instances and it leaves you with this mystery of what happened. This, however, did not create a confusion in following with the storyline.
The book begs the question “How far will you go to be with your love”?
Turning tables explores issues and challenges relating to multi cultural and interracial relationships. A seemingly love triangle between our black heroine (Maita) and 2 guys Chris (white man) and Ade (black man). You won’t know how it’s gonna go and who you’re routing for until an unpredictable twist happened in the book. Told from a multiple POV and dual timeline you get to know more as the story unfolds, what the characters were thinking in real time. I found the book to be relatable especially to the African diasporans as they navigate work, visa process, cultural changes and relationship expectations etc So many memorable quotes to support the book title e.g:
“I should have known better. I’d been in that exact situation not too long ago. I’d gone from being a very caring and loving boyfriend to being guarded and bitter, vowing never to fall so hard for anyone again. Now the tables had turned.” I gave book 4 stars instead of 5 which indicates perfection . As a debut author, there is room for growth and improvement on the writing style and plot execution. Looking forward to reading many more in the future. I was given an ARC, for an honest review!
1st book! It was a page turner. I wanted to know more and more after every chapter. This would be an excellent book club read. It explores cultural mores, roles, expectations..etc. There was a twist that I was not expecting and just had to finish the book to fund out what happens! I thought I knew what would happen, but was surprised. The writing and the story flows very well. I am a chronically look up new words, phrases, events that I am not familiar with or do not know. I was so intent on finding out what would happen that I just had to make notes and keep reading. There is a gentle flow between the characters. It is interesting to me to see how different characters view the same situation. Among the themes as the title of the book implies is what happens when the tables turn? - when we are in the other person's shoes? What do we risk for love and second chances..Read this book! It is eye opening on so many levels as it explores what it is like for an immigrant to come to the U.S and the U.K to try and find your footing in another culture and how we all universally must deal with the consequences of our choices.
I absolutely loved this read! Well done Alice Takawira on a captivating debut novel. I loved the storyline and how it unexpectedly unfolds told through each of the characters. The story manages to deliver a good balance of romance and thrilling drama. The author successfully addresses many important social topics such as racism, African and European cultural nuances in general and in relationships, the realities of African professionals studying and living in Europe/USA. E.g. getting documented and being able or unable to travel etc. Also the issue of dating violence without the typical stereotype of the perpetrator always being the black male.
The characters are relatable and authentic as the author paints a picture of where they are originally from in Africa and their way of life in Europe/USA. Maita the main character is my favourite. She’s a headstrong young lady who’s set in her ways, fun, bubbly, studious, resilient and focused. It is interesting to see how she’s got it altogether but has some blind spots when it comes to her love life.
Turning tables takes the reader into the life of Maita. Maita is an international student in America who worked in the UK but originally from Zimbabwe. Through the life of Maita the reader experiences the challenges of being an international student, the desire for love, the conflict of the heart with regards to love and the impact of love emotions displayed through narcissistic possessiveness. The plot of the book is easy to follow and the characters are well described and can be easily visualized. I thoroughly enjoyed the book as I could relate with Maita. I think most Africans in the UK and America will understand Maita's struggles or might have even experienced them. I also think its a good book for anyone who wants an introduction or insight into bi-racial and bicultural relationships and an understanding of what immigrants go through to try and settle in a country. Well done Alice hope you write more books :-)
This novel is like a rollercoaster. You get on all secure and calm, buckled in for a smooth ride....you're riding along uphill, taking in all the sights...and all of a sudden, the floor drops from under you! It takes off with jaw-dropping tension and revelatory exhilaration. The adrenaline is pumping. And JUST at the right moment, you arrive at the end...you take off the belt and you reflect on the crazy experience. Turning Tables has you questioning...how do you really know when it's "right" to leave or stay? What would YOU do for love?
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how unpredictable the entire experience that Maita had! I have read many love stories and this was not that typical story. It was filled with a perfect blend of intellect and familiar inner voices that some of us have encountered through our lives as we navigate the battle of ambition and love! It is a must read and must share!! Loved every chapter!!! You are going to struggle to put this one down once you start!!
Turning tables is a book about a young woman determined to find her feet in her career path. Alongside the grand career plan, she also had to navigate love. A roller coaster of emotions! I particularly love that after everything was said and done, true love conquered. This book definitely puts to perspective the meaning of ‘what will be, will be’. Very inspiring!
Graduate student Maita is returning to London for her summer break, but that’s not all she’s doing. She plans on trying to rekindle her relationship with her ex-boyfriend Ade after breaking his heart and going to America. On the flight she meets charming and charismatic Chris. They get along really well and Chris is drawn to Maita from the moment they start talking. When Ade rejects Maita’s attempts at getting back together, she gives Chris a chance. Because Maita and Chris come from different cultural backgrounds, they are forced to face some uncomfortable realities as an interracial couple. Then after a while Ade contacts Maita again things start spiraling out of control.
This story is about passion, jealousy, obsession and what length someone would go to for the person they love. The dual timeline and multiple POVs really help you to understand each character better. The story was gripping and fast-paced. I loved how real and relatable each character felt. There’s some romance with a ton of suspense that will have you turning to page to see what happens next. I didn’t want to put this book down. I liked how the book explored the difficulties of couple from culturally different backgrounds and I’m not just talking about skin colour. Ade is Nigerian and Maita is Zimbabwean and the expectations from those families are different. Then she starts dating Chris who is a white British man and this poses a different kind of challenge within their relationship. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a good romantic thriller and I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to read this one. Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy for review by the author. Turning Tables: You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Till It’s Gone is a heartfelt and immersive exploration of love, culture, and human emotion. Alice Takawira masterfully captures the complexities of relationships across continents and cultures, weaving a story that is both emotionally resonant and intensely engaging. Maita’s journey between past love and new possibilities is depicted with nuance, authenticity, and a deep understanding of the human heart.
The dynamics between Maita, Ade, and Chris are compelling and realistic. Takawira handles themes of race, cultural expectations, and emotional vulnerability with sensitivity, making each character’s choices and struggles relatable and thought-provoking. The tension of rekindled love, unrequited feelings, and the stakes of second chances creates a story that lingers long after the last page.
This is a poignant, engaging, and unforgettable romance for anyone who enjoys character-driven storytelling with depth, cultural richness, and emotional intensity.
Giving the author’s debut novel 5 stars since I sought a love story that wasn’t unrealistic and sappy, because the story gives that plus patriarchal themes of success defined by a man’s ability to provide for his lover juxtaposed her desire of achieving her goals before marriage. This work delivers a relatable story demonstrating how timing, missed opportunities, and possible second chances are far more realistic aspects of love. Add to the multicultural romance, obvious culture disparities, an unexpected suspense that gives you drama in each chapter. Bonus: there is a crime drama in the later chapters of 30+. The audiobook includes separate narration by each character so the voice gives life to hear the British, Nigerian, and Zimbabwean characters you won’t forget. This book is for someone who wants to root for love yet understands the decisions made in one’s young 20s differ from those made into early 30s all while love might wane or evolve.
Turning Tables by Alice Takawira I picked this one up at an art fest this fall. I got to meet the author and talk to her before purchasing her book and she autographed my copy. The author is originally from Zimbabwe. She then moved to London for work and ended up in Atlanta to get a master's degree. All of these moves were incorporated in to her main character Maita's experience. I hope that's where the similarities to her life end. This one was billed as a love triangle. But parts of it felt more like a thriller to me. One of the men was obsessive and abusive and I was really concerned for her well being. This one was fun in that it's always entertaining to read about MARTA's flaws and recognizing Phipps Plaza and Atlanta neighborhoods and restaurants. But I will say that for those who have suffered abuse, this may be a tough read.

What a great story, and amazing writing. It was definitely a page turner. I couldn't put it down because I had to know what happened next. It's an amazing story about a young woman's rollercoaster journey for love. It addressed the different challenges a young lady could face in the quest for love, including racial and cultural differences and the difficult task of choosing between your career and love. The contrast between the two suitors and the difference in their characters was interesting to see. I enjoyed how the writer was able to jump between different time periods and perspectives without confusing the reader. I definitely recommend it.
I read Turning Tables which is a poignant exploration of the power of love, second chances, and the pitfalls of obsession. This engaging tale highlights the triumphs and challenges of multicultural and multiracial relationships, providing readers with a thought-provoking and heartfelt narrative that delves into the depths of human connection and the lengths people will go to fight for the ones they love.
Turning table was thrilling love story that truly depicts the different aspects of dating within and out of your culture. The ultimate love triangle with many hidden plots and twists that encaptivate your soul wanting to know more and more of the characters and where their story ends. I loved it. Thank you Alice.
