Blind Dates

Is true love just a few dates away...or even closer than you think?

Tom has always been a hopeless romantic: but now he's just hopeless. After lockdown in particular made the millennial a reclusive introvert, it was finally time to get back 'out there' – at least according to his best friends Adam, Allison and sister Sarah.

As the group sets up 10 dates to rejuvenate Tom's love life, he soon realises how difficult the dating scene has become, along with juggling his Shakespearean-themed cafe and a hobby of romantic mixtape making.

As some of the dates turn into disasters, an old flame keeps reappearing in Tom's sight – along with bitter-sweet memories. Fearing it may be too little too late, Tom must decide whether he can date his way to happiness, or find his true match was under his nose the whole time...

This book is written in the style of speaking to the reader so well and so convincingly I had to check and recheck it wasn’t a true story,I felt very much a part of it and as if Tom,the main character was telling just me all about it
And all about it is,well, basically Tom is undateable or so he thinks, suffering from ‘nah I want to stay in and watch TV’ post lockdown style ( we all did and to a point still do relate to that ),it gets so bad his friends stage an intervention and set him up on 10 Blind Dates, now these range from horrific to pretty nice and are funny but funny as in reality funny not way OTT funny, one line as he meets his first blind date will though have you laughing out loud
There is a poignant and quite sad added story to the main story which is touching and powerful…..
It is a post lockdown novel but only in so much as how it affected people not the politics or illness side
Tom is a darling and I think you will like him,oh he is an Old Maid at times but he’s someone you would want as a friend and he has a kindness that is infectious
A really different read, romantic and funny and feel good but unlike any other book like this that I have read

Blind Dates lacked the depth and complexity I was hoping for in a novel. I found the book to be manipulative and immature, with insane matches and incompatible dates. The writing itself was also lackluster, failing to engage me in any meaningful way. The plot was predictable and uneventful, with few engaging twists. I don't recommend this book to anyone looking for a genuine and enjoyable read.

After the lockdown due to the pandemic Tom is a bit of a hermit. He blew it with the girl he likes and other than work he doesn’t really leave his flat.
So his friends and sister decide to stage an intervention and set Tom up on 10 blind dates.
Some of the dates are ok, some not so much, but at least Tom is out of his flat right?!?
The questions is, will one of the ten be ‘the one’?

This book was cute. Tom was likeable and it was interesting to read a romance that is written by a male. Toms love of romcoms and making mixed tapes gave him a slightly awkward, quirky feel which I loved.
The dates were cute and fun but the constant drone about the girl he let get away got kinda annoying. I’m not the biggest fan of the not telling people how you really feel/miscommunication trope. The second half of the book made up for this though!

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a unique, easy read with a couple of twists that were unexpected!

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced ebook.

Imagine you get the chance to tell the love of your life how you feel and you choke. Instead of being able to follow up with them, you are sent into a months long lockdown. This is what happens to Tom after he fails to step up to his previously unrequited love Beth.

After the lockdown, and Tom’s self imposed dating hiatus, his friends devise a plan—ten blind dates, all personally curated by one of them. Along the way Tom finds that dating has really changed, it’s easy to end up going viral, friends will betray you, and lost loves may not be gone forever.

Thank you NetGalley for the digital advanced reader copy!

I think it may be more of a 3.5. But I did enjoy this one. I love any plot that includes dating, it always makes for many good and varied stories. Tom was a likeable but sometimes frustrating chatacter 😂 but he got there in the end. A heartwarming story of overcoming lockdown and finding yourself again in a whole new world.

Well, let me say, that I love Gordon's writing style, Songs for your mother was an absolute heart breaking favourite of mine and a tough act to follow, Luckily he didn't try and this book has a very different feel and direction. We do bump into some ties from his first book in a tasteful and creative way.
We follow Tom on his journey post lockdown back into the dating world after an intervention from his friends. As a single woman I can identify with some of the conundrums presented here. It's nice to know that men also worry about their fertile days coming to an end, as do women.
He has to complete a set number of dates, which take place around London. I really must visit Waterstones on Piccadilly. I giggled when he went speed dating, something I have tried myself and failed at. I loved the reference to the Gilmore Girls. Team Jess and Logan all the way.
Is there music in this book? For sure, in fact our Tom has an old school stereo left behind by his dad on which many a mixed tape is created. Boy, I remember those, I am sure readers of a certain age can all tell a mixed take story, does anyone remember sitting by the deck waiting for a favourite song to play on the radio that we could record? Pat Sharp anyone? He was my Sunday Chart Hero on BFBS Radio.
Running a Coffee shop with Convoluted coffee orders made me laugh, I am definitely one of those people who order an Oat or Coconut Milk Latte with Vanilla or Caramel and cause all kinds of confusions and delays.
There are so many lough out loud moments and many omg what? moments in this book. I fully recommend it t anyone dating, or remembers dating and the drama it can bring. Now, here's waiting for Gordons next book.

Tom has always been a hopeless romantic but now he's just hopeless. After the COVID lockdown made him a reclusive introvert it was time, according to his friends and sister, to get back out there. The group sets him up on ten blind dates with the goal of re-establishing his love life. Tom quickly comes to realize just how difficult the dating world is! The dates mostly all have disastrous results and Tom keeps encountering memories of an old flame. Tom soon finds that he must decide if he can date his way to happiness or if his true love has been under his nose all along?
The book starts out with the events that led up to the pandemic with Tom starting to realize he might not like his job anymore. He is also addressing that a close friend will be moving away soon. Most important, however, Tom's best friend Beth confesses her feelings for him and rather than acknowledge his own he shuts down! Fast forward to a year of lockdown and his friends have decided enough is enough! They set him up on a variety of dates that they think would be successful for him.
As each date happened I honestly wondered if his friends were just finding the most insane matches for him to encourage him to go after Beth. I mean literally all of the dates seemed incompatible pretty early on. And he had the one friend who kept telling him he should confess his feelings to her before it was too late. While the dates are terrible it seems that Tom finds a useful take away from each of them, which is nice. (Even if he did go viral for that one)
The book was rather cute and fun. It was a nice look at the importance of friendship and romance. I liked the premise of his friends setting up the dates and not telling him anything until hours before the dates! It really did seem to get him back out of his shell. I will say the end of the book had some revelations that I did see coming and a few that I really did not see coming. If you want a fun lighthearted read which examines change and moving on after the pandemic check out this book!

I really like the idea of the book. It is always interesting to read about blind dates and dates in general. And I tried to like this book, but unfortunately this did not happen. I was annoyed by the main character of the book, Tom. I was annoyed with him a lot. Especially on situations with Beth. It is so manipulative, so immature.

Not my kind of read.

First, I want to thank Gordon Macmillan, Hera and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

OH WOW!!! Blind Dates by Gordon Macmillan was just the fun read that I needed. Having been single for so long and not sure how to navigate dating in the post pandemic here comes this fun read. Oh Gordon will have you smiling ear to ear, laughing out loud, rolling your eyes at some of his dating options, and wondering about the one that got away. It is definitely a must read!

One big theme in both books that Gordon has written (that I have had the honor to read and review) has been his love of music. In Blind Dates each chapter is titled a song title that compiled at the end can be a mixed tape found on Spotify. Two of the songs that are posted he actually wrote himself. He also has his character in his books make a mixtape of popular songs as well. I smiled at this because when I was younger I made mixtapes all the time and loved them.

I loved that Gordon took the modern day topic of the Pandemic and used it in the storyline. Dating is hard enough but this day in age with the pandemic it is even harder. So I am glad that he addressed this issue.

As a huge fan of all things pop culture I smiled at all the references to it like when he watched all the seasons of Gilmore Girls during the pandemic! What guy would admit that?! I loved that series!

Gordon let us readers be a fly on the wall as we got to be a voyeur on these interesting dates. Oh there was one that I totally shook my head at and couldn’t believe how rude she was!! I was laughing my booty off at the backlash on the social media commentary! He met a lot of interesting people, learned a lot about himself, and gained experience in the process.

With Blind Dates Gordon did his research on dating and educated us on the statistics on various points.

At the end of the book Gordon gives a very nice write up of what his inspiration was to write this book.

Gordon Macmillan’s Blind Dates is a witty, heartfelt and uplifting tale that is hard to resist!

Hopeless romantic Tom has never been the life and soul of the party and lockdown had managed to make the cafe owner even more reclusive. Tom would love nothing more than to find his soulmate, but the love of his life is not just going to fall into his lap. If he wants to find ‘The One’, then he needs to stop hiding in the shadows and get back on the dating scene. With his best friends setting him up on ten dates, Tom is keeping everything crossed that he will find somebody to spend the rest of his life with. Fate, however, might just have other plans…

Juggling a busy dating life with running his Shakespeare-themed cafe is no picnic and Tom’s quest for love is further complicated by the reappearance of a former flame who also brings to the fore bittersweet memories Tom would have much rather kept dead and buried. But with his romantic future on the line, has Tom left it too late? Or has his perfect match been under his nose all along?

Gordon Macmillan’s Blind Dates is a lovely read that will have readers laughing, crying and cringing along with Tom as he tries to find happiness. Hopeful, emotional and hugely enjoyable, Blind Dates cannot fail to brighten up every reader’s day with a beguiling blend of humour, pathos, emotion and warmth.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tom isn't sure about his current life. He works from day to day but has lost his passion for his job and he has missed the chance to be with the girl he feels could be the one.
But when we go into lockdown, a year passes and things need to change. Changing his job for something completely different makes him happy but he is still a romantic and wants to find someone. So his friends set him up on ten very different dates.

I felt this novel was a little slow to begin with, but it did pick up and I found some of the scenarios entertaining.

This was written from the first-person POV of Tom which made this an effortless first-hand read. I also enjoyed that this was from a male POV throughout; which you don't always get within a romance novel and this was really enjoyable, showing the vulnerability of the opposite sex and how they are portrayed just as romantic and wanting to find true love as anyone else.

Tom is floundering in his life, especially with relationships, and post pandemic lockdowns he is even more of a recluse. His friends decide to step in and make him undertake 10 blind dates to jump start his life.

At first I thought this was going to go one way, but then slowly you could see why Tom was the way he was. It was touching and heartbreaking when you realise what is going on, or has gone on. He can be utterly frustrating at times, especially when you could easily see "SHES RIGHT THERE DO SOMETHING TOM!' but it was relatable.

Blind Dates was surprisingly poignant in bits which I think made this book a wonderful read, and who hasn't floundered in their life paralysed with making decisions out of fear, but that fear causes the very think you don't want to happen, to happen.

This is the story of Tom a hopeless romantic who wants to find 'The One' but needs to stop hiding in order to achieve this. Tom's story is told over the course of 28 Chapters as well as a Prologue. The prologue does a brilliant job of getting the reader pumped and excited for the story.
This story is very realistic especially when it comes to the dates that Tom goes on. This story is witty and full of heartfelt moments that readers will just love. It is an uplifting story about the ups and downs of trying to find the elusive 'one'. A story that readers (especially the hopeless romantics like Tom) will love.
Overall this story will have readers laughing, cringing and crying as the watch Tom on his journey.

Thanks to NetGalley, Hera Books and Gordon MacMillan for the advanced ebook in exchange my review.

This book was cute and funny. At first it's a slow starter but I was entirely intrigued. This story was fun, entertaining and at times thought provoking. I really liked that it was from the perspective of getting back into the dating after the pandemic. It's well written and it kept me very entertained and engaged. There are so many lough out loud moments and I strongly recommend to those have dating readers.

After Songs for your Mother, which I loved, I was excited for the new Gordon Macmillan novel.

In love and life, you must take chances....

Blind Dates follows Tom as he navigates his way through lockdown. His friends set him up on blind dates so he can find love. Or is Beth his true love after all?

The dates are so different, and that's what makes this realistic. It's a simple premise, but makes for a good story.

Thanks to Gordon MacMillan, Hera and Rachel's Random Resources for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

A brilliant read that was captivating and interesting to read. I don’t often read many books written by men, so I found it a refreshing change to read a romance type story from the male perspective.
I liked the way Gordon incorporated the lockdown into his story, as it highlighted how it effected us all in different ways. It was fascinating to see the impact it had on Tom and I was intrigued to see if he could get himself back out there, mixing with people after becoming a bit of a recluse during lockdown.
Several twists in the story really took me by surprise, and I found myself completely rooting for a happy ending for Tom.
A fast paced and engaging story that kept my interest throughout. Fun with some likeable characters and situations that had me reading avidly.
Can’t wait to read the next book!

This took me a while to get into, but I really enjoyed it once I did. It started picking up for me once the blind dates actually started.

This story was fun, and I really liked that it was from the perspective of someone trying to get back into the dating world after the pandemic. There's so much pain associated with the last few years, so reading something that is a more lighthearted spin on our shared experiences is always nice.

3.5

This was a great read that was fun, entertaining and at times thought provoking. Tom is a great character and it was good to read something from a male point of view about dating and lockdown. I really liked the style of writing and it kept me very entertained and engaged. I loved reading about Tom’s ten dates and thought that the other characters were described well and that the plot was realistic on all points. I could easily imagine Tom as a real person!

Even though I do read romance novels on a regular basis I don't think I've read many that are entirely from the male perspective. So this was something I enjoyed straight away.

It is a story set after Covid, which I know may not be what every reader likes, but it is a very enjoyable read so I still think most readers will get into this one despite that.

Tom is a likable character and I think the authors interesting way of storytelling makes this novel unique. It was a fun and easy read.

I don’t think this book was bad. I just think it would be way more entertaning watching the story, than reading about it. It has the perfect potential for a rom-com adaptation.
But whilst reading the story, I was so bored most of the time and couldn‘t care less about the main character or anyone else. Only the last 60 pages had my full attention. The plot idea itself and the topics were good though. It just couldn‘t convince me enough by the way it was written.

-.5 stars for a post covid dating story

Not going to lie, I didn’t finish.
When the book started, it had so much potential but it was just so slow. I tried, I really did but I was just bored.
I am assured it got better and apparently plenty of twists and shocks but I just didn’t have the energy to get to that, it was just so slow.
I however did like that it was from a male point of view as so often dating style books are from the female point of view

Special thanks to NetGalley and Hera Books for an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

It took quite a bit of time to get into the story. The first 25% was basically showcasing how much the main character didn’t take risks and that he missed numerous chances to be with his “soulmate” aka what a coward he is. I almost DNF the book because it kept dragging on.

I also didn’t like the writing style. I could be a little biased since I typically read a lot more female authors in this genre, but the story didn’t immerse me as much as I was expecting. But I did like what he discovered through the blind dates.

Overall 2.75 ⭐️

Absolutely loved this book. I love books about dating in all of its awful awkwardness and then its joy when it goes right.

This book also had some depth as well. Set after lockdown, Tom is forced to get off his backside and get out there again. It deals with the mental health struggles that many faced and how our lives changed and I loved that too. I want to see my characters grow and develop, and this book brought that.

We follow Tom on ten dates, and he even goes viral on social media when one date goes particularly badly.

Blind Dates follows Tom on his journey to get “back out there” after lockdown. His friends have set him up on dates with people they know with hilarious results. Music is mentioned as in Gordon’s previous book and I loved the references to some great tunes and a mixed tape brings back happy memories! Perfect fun read which I read on holiday.

Not a fan of lockdown based reads as Covid was a nightmare but this book dealt with the mental after effects and loneliness well without dwelling on it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE male point of view books, and this read was refreshing and engaging. Will definitely read more by this author!

2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because ultimately I had fun/didn't hate it. Super bland predictable romcom with a couple twists that are also fairly predictable, even if I only saw one of them coming. Cute light beach read. Disappointed it wasn't more detailed. Most of the characters are very flat.

If you like titled numbered characters, this is for you. The titles are songs, so you could create a soundtrack for this book. I feel as though knowing these songs and really looking at the lyrics of these songs, you could really love this book.
