in my "actually twilight is unironically good" era 🍎

---------------------------

can't stop thinking about how we're entering a twilight renaissance and it's so beautiful it makes me want to cry and also write a dissertation. when these books first came out they were so heavily ridiculed because A) they were mostly popular with like 12-17 yo girls and B) in a lot of ways, they were sort of the first of their kind to gain this sort of cult following during the rise of social media. a YA paranormal romance that was totally modern and accessible and relatable. the original booktok book. as one of those 12-17 yo girls who also had a personal connection to the setting, these books were everything.

but everyone who was not even in the target demographic approached them like they were serious literary works and criticized the stuff that didn't really matter instead of understanding that they were just silly campy dramatic romance for girls. and then the movies started coming out, and they were SO bad. terrible acting, terrible effects, all the vampires somehow managed to look ugly, the CGI baby??? the little laugh that one volturi guy does on the battlefield in the last movie? "bella, where have you been, loca"?????? Edward's "girl you stink" face???? cemented the whole series and anyone who liked them as a laughing stock. and you younger girlies don't understand that this lasted for like 5 YEARS. twilight hate was everlasting in a way that things these days just aren't, because there's so much content thrown at us all the time from all angles that even negative attention only lasts a couple months at most.

but now years have passed and all these teens who were too young to read/watch them when they came out but still grew up with twilight as a major part of pop culture are getting curious about it. their cringe not like the other girls older cousin who still puts eyeliner on her water line thinks "still a better love story than twilight" is a relevant meme and they need to know wtf is going on with this series. they're watching the movies with fresh eyes and going... actually this is hilarious and silly and kind of endearing? and then they're reading the books and going wait this is way more emotional than i expected i actually kind of love this.

listen, there's plenty to take issue with in twilight. stephenie meyer is kind of a weirdo puritan mormon. she simultaneously saved and destroyed the town of forks, wa (which is a really weird place to go if you ever get the chance). her depiction of the actual native people of the region was less than ideal, to say the least. but also? the way she essentially added to the canon of her stories by writing fanfiction and publishing it is genuinely kind of amazing and something i would love to see more authors do. she honestly paved the way for a lot of popular YA romantasy. she wrote interesting characters with complicated backstories. twilight is GOOD and the world needs to know.

Y’all can judge me all you want but I put a lot of time, effort, and angst into this series, and I’m the type to finish what I started

I recently saw a dedication in a book that says: dedicated to everyone who read Twilight and thought, "why are these vampires so Mormon?" I laughed so hard! I'm giving the series as a whole 4 stars more for nostalgia reasons. I ate up these books when they came out and have reread them several times. As I've reread them again this year, they have hit a little different. Maybe it's because I'm so old now, haha. That being said, and even though I laughed at that dedication, I'll still take it over some of the more popular stuff today that is just way too over the top with language and spice.

Hated the gender reversed book

There was no reason for EVERY character, except Bella's three parents to have been gender reversed! It made no sense.

I did like the book from Edward's point of view.

Good deal

Amazing deal for every single Twilight book so far. More than I expected and the extras create so much lore.

I will literally duel with anyone that wasn’t to argue with me on the love and glory that is twilight. It’s weird, awkward, has plot holes, & did he really need to wanna be doing the nasty with baby Rasputin? Peace love twilight forever. This is the skin of a killer, Bella

Is it too soon to start reading these again?
While Twilight has its flaws, no one can deny the incredible world that was created and that has left a mark in so many hearts.

The characters are great. The plot believable. The word choice and language is a little simple for me though. Being that it is a young adult novel, however, that is very appropriate, and, if I didn't love Anne Rice so very much, I might really, really love this. Anne Rice's writing is eloquent and complex, and I couldn't help comparing.

My favorite book of the series was Midnight Sun from Edward's perspective. Not only did I enjoy his more mature perspective, but I got to hear the thoughts of everyone around him.

My last favorite was Life and Death, which just didn't work for me.
