Bhitti, Canvas. This is the autobiography of Bhyrappa who lost his mother at the age of eleven, both sister and brother with plague on the same day when he was nine. At the age of fourteen; he had to carry the dead body of his younger brother to cremate. He was looked after by an uncle who used physically punish him and an aunt who was cruel to him. He begged for food, walked 600 miles to Bombay with the dream of making his life. Working as a hotel waiter, assistant in a theatre company. . At last he managed to continue education, completed Ph.D., and grew as novelist. This autobiography. In every sense factual, reads like a novel and has become a model of autobiography writing.

About the author

Dr S.L. Bhyrappa is a litterateur par excellence. He writes in the south Indian language, Kannada, and has been the bestselling novelist for over 25 years now. His novels are widely translated to pan Indian languages. He is the bestselling novelist in Marathi over the past decade and is among the top-five bestselling authors in Hindi. He is a conscious artist that depicts fundamental human emotions in his novels. In addition to his profound knowledge of Indian philosophical and cultural traditions, Professor Bhyrappa has since his childhood had intense personal experiences in both rural and urban milieu. Consequently, his characters are deeply rooted in Indian soil. Seminars have been and are being held on his novels, and volumes of literary criticism have been published on his works.

His books have found their way to the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses of the universities in the state of Karnataka, and have been the subject of about 20 PhD dissertations. He has penned 24 novels and four volumes of literary criticism and books on aesthetics, social issues and culture. Most of his novels are translated into almost all the Indian languages and six into English. He has served as a Prof. of Philosophy over three decades at NCERT.

Dr Bhyrappa is an avid listener of both Indian and Western classical music and has a keen eye for Art. Travelling has been his paasion since childhood and he has travelled across the globe touching the glaciers of poles, forests of Amazon, deserts of Africa, bustling cities of Europe and the United States. He has trekked in the Alps, the Rockies, Andes and in Fujiama, but the Himalayas remain his greatest passion.

ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಒಂದು ದೀರ್ಘ ಉಸಿರೆಳೆದು ಬಿಟ್ಟು, ಕಣ್ಣಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿದ ನೀರನ್ನು ಹೊರಸಿ ಮನ ಅರ್ಪಿಸೋ ತುಂಬು ಜೀವನದ ದರ್ಶನ ಈ ಆತ್ಮವೃತ್ತಾಂತ...

ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಜೀವನ ಕಷ್ಟ, ನನಗಿಂತ ಕಷ್ಟ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದರೆ, ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಓದಲು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು, ಒಬ್ಬ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಇಷ್ಟು ಸಹಿಷ್ಣುನಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಅಂದರೆ ಅವನ ಮನೋಬಲ ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಇರಬೇಡ ಹೇಳಿ... ಒಂದೇ ದಿನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ಕ, ಅಣ್ಣನ ಸಾವು, ನಂತರ ತಾಯಿಯ ಸಾವು, ತಮ್ಮನ ಸಾವು ತಮ್ಮನ ಹೆಣವನ್ನು ಭುಜದ ಮೇಲೆ ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಸಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಭಾರ, ತಂದೆಯ ತೀರ ಅಸಹ್ಯದ ಬೇಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿತನ, ಹಸಿವು, ತಂಗಿಯ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ, ಓದಿನ ಹಸಿವು, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ದುಡಿಯಲೇ ಬೇಕಾದ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆ.... ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲರ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ತತ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣತಿ ಹೊಂದಿ, ಬಹು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಓದುಗವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ನಮ್ಮ "ಬೈರಪ್ಪರದ್ದು".

Ufff!

ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಆಗ್ಬೋದ ಅನ್ನೋ feeling ಬಂದಿದ್ದು ಹೌದು.

ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಬಾಲ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಯೌವ್ವನದ ಬಡತನವನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ, ನನಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಕೂಡ ಕಷ್ಟ ಆಯ್ತು.
ಆತ್ಮೀಯರ ಸಾವನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡರು.
ಬಡತನ, ಆತ್ಮೀಯರ ಸಾವು ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಅವರ ಸಾಧನೆಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಅಡ್ಡ ಗೋಡೆ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಮೀರಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ರೀತಿ ಅದ್ಭುತ.

ಇಡೀ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ತನ್ನ ತುತ್ತೂರಿ ತಾನೇ ಊದುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಎದುರಿಸಿದ challenges, cheap politics ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚು ಮರೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಜಾತಿ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಇವುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೂಡ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ಇದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಅವರ ಹಲವು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಬರೆಯಲು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ, background ಸಹ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ತಯಾರಿಗೆ hats off.

ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲ ಕಲಿಯಬಹುದು ಅನ್ನೋದಕ್ಕೆ ಇವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆ example.

ಇವರ ಮತ್ತು ಗೋವಿಂದರಾಯರ ಒಡನಾಟದ ಭಾಗ ಬಹಳ ಇಷ್ಟ ಆಯ್ತು.

ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳಿದರೂ ಈ book ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅದು ಕಮ್ಮಿನೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ review ಬರೆಯುವುದು ಕೂಡ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಎಷ್ಟೋ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಇದೆ. ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಬರೆಯೋದು ಯಾವುದನ್ನ ಬಿಡೋದು ಅಂತ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಲ್ಲ.

ಅದ್ಯಾವ ಅನೂಹ್ಯ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ೨೦೨೬ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಬೇಕೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಆತ್ಮವೃತ್ತಾಂತವಾದ “ಭಿತ್ತಿ” ಯನ್ನು ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಭೌತಿಕವಾಗಿ ಅಗಲುವ ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಮುಂಚೆಯಷ್ಟೇ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ್ದೆ, ಶತಮಾನದ ಸಾಹಿತಿಯ ಸಾರ್ಥಕ ಜೀವನದ ಅರಿವಿನ ಗುಂಗಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅವರ ಅಗಲಿಕೆ ಮಾನಸಿಕವಾಗಿ ಘಾಸಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆ.

“ಭಿತ್ತಿ”ಯನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸಲು ಅಥವಾ ವಿಮರ್ಶಿಸಲು ನಾನು ಅಶಕ್ತ, ಅದು ಕೇವಲ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ನೈತಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯ, ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆಯೇ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾವು, ನೋವು, ಕಿತ್ತು ತಿನ್ನುವ ಬಡತನ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಿಡದೇ ಆವರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೂ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಬಂಡೆಯಂತೆ ನಿಂತು ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗನ ವೀರಘಾತೆ.

Masterpiece. Unique in multiple strands of this genre.

My secret santa gift of 2018, and the Santa was generous enough to pick the same copy for self and indulge in a BR :)

An antidote of "A Room of One's Own", as he has lived most of his life wading through severe adverse conditions, and still managed to write so many great books. Starts with the author's thoughts on when and how an autobiography is supposed to be written. Followed by the chronological events in his life and how it shaped him. This warrants for a re-read after reading through all of his books. Esp Gruhabanga and Vamshavriksha.

Loved:
- The flow of words. The thought process and involvement while writing few of his books. The art and dedication of creative writing.
- Epic descriptions of Mysore and its administration during the King's rule.
- Accumulation of multiple skills - cook, waiter, scholar, obsessive reader, classical music connoisseur, expert at mountain climbing, wandered and later planned traveller.
- Inspirational journey - close encounters with death, losing all the loved ones at a ripe age, coming of age descriptions.
- Many parts in between contain words of wisdom for budding writers.

Hated:
- English translation - Looks like its not proof read even once. Usage of weather/whether, tender-cocoanut (p.361), behin7d (p.385), 1important (p.557), Salmon Rushdie (p.623) and many incorrect sentence formations with grammatical errors.
- Sans family - Nothing at all about his marriage, companionship with wife, upbringing of his sons. All mum and neglected.
- Chapter titles would have been more fun. Not there in any of his books.

Disappointed:
Non availability of translated works :(
Only a few are available - Parva, Mandra, Saakshi, Aavarna, Sartha, Tantu.
Translated in multiple languages and still difficult to find a copy - Gruhabanga, Vamshavriksha, Nele.
Not translated - Bhimakaya, Anchu, Yaana, Grahana, Jalapatha, Kavalu, DharmaShree, Doorasaridaru, Gatha Janma, Anveshane, Mathadana….. And at least 10 more!

Overall: Highly recommended if you love any of these - autobiography, Indian regional literature, books by Bhyrappa.

ಅಚ್ಚುಮೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಲೇಖಕರ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಜೀವನ ಪಯಣದ ಆತ್ಮಕಥನವಿದು... ಇವರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ಇವರ ಚಾರಿತ್ರ್ಯದ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬ ಅಚ್ಚೊತ್ತಿದಂತೆ ನಿಂತುಬಿಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಆತ್ಮಕಥನವನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದು ಸುಳ್ಳಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎನಿಸಿತು. ಇವರ ಜೀವನ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಿಂತ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಬಾಲಕ ತನ್ನ ಪರಿಸರದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಡೆತಡೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿನಿಂತು ಈ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಧೀಮಂತ ಲೇಖಕನಾಗುವುದು ಪವಾಡವೇ ಸರಿ .

ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಸೋದರ ಮತ್ತು ಸೋದರಿಯನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ನೋವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮರೆಯುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲೇ ತಾಯಿಯ ದೇಹಾಂತ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ತಂದೆಯಂತೂ ಬೇಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ, ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕರಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕ್ರೂರಿ ಮಾವನ ಮನೆ ಸೇರಬೇಕಾದ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ನಮಗೆ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಮರುಕ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.ತಂಗಿಯ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯ ಚಿಂತೆಯೂ ಹೆಗಲೇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಅವರು ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ಪಯಣದ ಯಶಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಮೆಟ್ಟಲನ್ನು ಹತ್ತುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಉಂಟಾದ ಅಡಚಣೆಗಳು ಅಷ್ಟಿಷ್ಟಲ್ಲ.ಅವರು ವಾರಾನ್ನ ಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದು, ಭಿಕ್ಷಾನ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಯಾವುದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಎಗ್ಗಿಲ್ಲದೆ ನಿರಾತಂಕವಾಗಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ದಾಂಪತ್ಯ ಜೀವನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ.ಬಹುಶ ಅದವರಿಗೆ ಅಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಎನಿಸಿರಬಹುದು.

ಬಹುಶಃ ಇಂತಹ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೋ ಏನೋ ಅವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ವಿವಿಧ ಮಜಲಿನ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ನಮಗೆ ಇವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾವಂತರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿ ಬಾಳಿನ ಬಂಡಿಯನ್ನು ಹಳಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ತಂದಿದ್ದಂತೂ ಒಂದು ಸೋಜಿಗವೇ ಸರಿ .

ಕಡೆಕಡೆಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರಸವೆನಿಸಿದರೂ ಸಹ ಯಾವುದೇ ಹಮ್ಮುಬಿಮ್ಮು ಇಲ್ಲದ, ರೋಚಕ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯು ಅಲ್ಲದ ಸಾದಾಸೀದ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅವರ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳೇ ಇಂದಿನ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದೆ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಾ ಯಾರನ್ನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ನಿಂದಿಸದೆ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ತನಗಿಷ್ಟಬಂದಂತೆ ರೂಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ನಿಷ್ಠುರವಾದಿ ಬೈರಪ್ಪ ನಮಗಿಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ .ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತೂ ಅಪ್ಯಾಯಮಾನವಾಗಿಯೂ , ಆತ್ಮೀಯರಾಗಿಯೂ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

An author I discovered in recent years, and has quickly become one of my favourites..
After reading nearly half a dozen books by him, was keen to know how he is, as a person . I understand that, an autobiography, however truly written can be biased. Still, it does give glimpses into the soul of the writer..

And the glimpse I got showed me how upright, learned, intelligent, hardworking , albeit a bit headstrong person,. Bhyrappa is.
I was shocked and distressed at all the hardship that kept on haunting him till late, including the untimely death has of his mother and siblings, and the peculiar tenacity of his good for nothing father and relatives to carry on living.
I wanted to know more about his personal life... But I wasn't allowed to peek through .
So I don't know anything about his sons, including their names , occupation, whether they too write etc... His wife is portrayed as a supportive home maker , but I don't know whether she reads his books, she's a reader, or what her hobbies are..

I came to have a good idea of how he wrote his books...

I am in awe of him as a writer ..

Still, reducing the initially intended 5 stars to 4, due to the innumerable grammatical errors and as a punishment for not letting me voyeur into his personal life 😒

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನಂತರ ನನಗೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಇದ್ದ ಗೌರವ ಇನ್ನೂ ಉನ್ನತ ಮಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೇರಿತು. ನಾನು ಅವರ ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನಂತರ ಇಷ್ಟು ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಬರೆಯಲು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಭಿತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನಂತರ ನನಗೆ ಅವರ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಅವುಗಳು ಅವರ ಜೀವನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀರಿದ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಅರ್ಥವಾಯಿತು,ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ಛಾಪನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಂಡೆ.

The Bhitti is a biography of S.L Bhyrappa's life circus which consists of his poverty filled and motherless childhood, the struggle of student life, the absurd reality of the caste and political indian system , love for Kannada literature, and constant love towards travel.

Byrappa loses everything in the game of life in childhood which is heartbreaking , but all the troubles he has faced in life shaped him to face all obstacles in the future with ease. Since he had nothing to lose in life, Byrappa goes on exploring life through different angles.

I really want to write long reviews on this book but I would add spoilers which might hinder readers from exploring the treasure throughout the book.

When you finish the book you will come out as a different person with a graceful approach towards life.
If the author can find something meaningful in life through all the hardship, why can't we?

ಮೊದಲೆರಡು ಅಧ್ಯಾಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಬಾಲ್ಯಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಎದುರಿಸಿದ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಣ್ಣಂದಿನಿಂದ ಚೂಟಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಮಾವನ ಕೈರುಚಿಯು ಜಾಣತನವನ್ನು ಅಳುಕಿಸಿತ್ತು. ತಾಯಿಯಿಂದ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಸಹಾಯ ಸಿಕ್ಕರೂ ಅದು ಮಾವನ ಕೈಯ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಬರುವರೆಗೆ ಮಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ತಾಯಿಯ ಸಾವು ತನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗದೆ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆಯೇ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿದಾಗ ಮಾವನ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅವರ ಸಿಟ್ಟು ಇಮ್ಮಡಿಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅವರ ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ತೊರೆದು ನುಗ್ಗೆಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾರಾನ್ನದಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದರು. ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಲು ಯಾರೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ತಮ್ಮ ಮರ್ಜಿಯಂತೆ ಸ್ವೇಚ್ಛವಾಗಿ ಮುನ್ನುಗ್ಗಲು ಧೈರ್ಯ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿಯ ಸಾವುಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಬೆಳೆದವರು. ಅವರ ಅಣ್ಣ ರಾಮಣ್ಣ, ತಾಯಿಯವರ ಸಾವು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲುಗಾಡಿಸಿದವು. ತಮ್ಮನ ಮುಗ್ಧತನವನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಅವನ ಸಾವು ಸಿಡಿಲು ಬಡಿದಂಗಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಮಿಂದೆ ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸಲು ಅವರು ಅನೇಕ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದರು. ಊಟಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ವಾರಾನ್ನವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು, ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ ಬೇಡಿ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನಾಟಕ, ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಥಿಯೇಟರ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಮುಂದೆ hotel, ಅವರಿವರ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡುಗೆಯವರಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದು ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಒಂದು ಸಲ ಭಜನೆಯವರು ಮತ್ತು ನಾಟಕದವರ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ದಾದಾರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ತಲುಪಿ ಕೂಲಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಮುಂದೆ ಹೇಗೋ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿ ಆನರ್ಸ್ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು. ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ತಮಗೆ ಯಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಸಹಾಯ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಂಬಲ ಸಿಗದೇ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಹುಲಿಯಂತೆ ಮುನ್ನುಗ್ಗಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಶ್ರೇಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೇರ್ಗಡೆಯಾದರು. ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಮೂಲ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಿ. ತಾವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಸರಿಯೋ ತಪ್ಪೋ, ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪಥ ತನಗೆ ಒಳಿತನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆಯೇ ಅಂತ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡಲು ಒಬ್ಬ ದಾರಿತೋರುಗರು ಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಯಮುನಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಪವೃಕ್ಷದ ಹಾಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕರು. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಒಬ್ಬ ಅದ್ಭುತ ವಾಗ್ಮಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿದರು. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಚರ್ಚಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ಇರಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಹಾಜರ್. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಒಂದನೇ ನಂಬರನ್ನು ಗಿಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ಜಾತಿಯ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಕಡೆ ಸಿಗಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದ ಗೌರವ ಸಿಗದೇ ಹೋಯಿತು. ಅದಕ್ಕವರು ಧ್ವನಿ ಎತ್ತಿ ಅದರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಡಿದರು. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಕುಸ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಗೀತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅಖಾಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಯವೈಖರಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಭೀಮಕಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಬರೆದರು. ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಳಿಸುವುದೇ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರು ತರಾಸು ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಭೀಮಕಾಯವನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದರು. ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡರೇನು ಸರಿ ಆದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ಬಿಡುವಿರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಂದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ನಂತರ ಮುದ್ರಣಾಲಯದವರು ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ತಿಂಗಳಾದಮೇಲೆಯೂ ಅವರಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಬರದಾದಾಗ ಅವರು ಸ್ವತಃ ಹೋಗಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಂಡಾಗ ಅವರು ತಮಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯವಿದ್ದ ಮುದ್ರಣಗಾರರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡಿಸಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಣ ಮಾಡುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಇದು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾದ ಕಾರಣ ಜನ ಅವರ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿ ಕೇಳಿದಂತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ತಮಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಲಾಭವಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ ತಿಳಿದಾಗ ಮುದ್ರಣ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವರು ಹಿದೇಟು ಹಾಕುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಗೆಳೆಯನ ನೆರವಿನಿಂದ ಗೋವಿಂದರಾಯರ ಕೈಸೇರಿ ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಂಡು ಜನರಿಂದ ಉತ್ತಮ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ದೊರೆಯಿತು. ಹೀಗೆ ಗೋವಿಂದರಾಯರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಭಂಡಾರ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಖಾಯಂ ಮುದ್ರಣಾಲಯವಾಯಿತು.
ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ನಂತರ ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆ ಕಾಣಲು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಹೊರಟರು.
ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ ಒಂದು ಬೇರೆಯ ನಗರವಾಗಿ ಕಂಡಿತು. ಕಾರಣ ಮೈಸೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ. ಮತ್ತು ಸಣ್ಣ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಬೇಕು ಹಾಗೆ ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಹೊಸ ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಜೊತೆ ಕೂಡಿದವರು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಕವಿ ಡಿ ಎಸ್ ಕರ್ಕಿಯವರು. KLE ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾಡಸಿದ್ದೇಶ್ವರ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಸಿಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಮೆರಿಕದಿಂದ ಉನ್ನತ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕರೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಯಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕರ್ಕಿಯವರು ತಮಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಕೇವಲ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರು, ಅಲ್ಪಾಧಿಕಾರದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಅವರ ಮುಂದಿತ್ತು. ಇದೆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ತಂಗಿ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯಕ್ಕೀಡಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಊರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ತಂಗಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ನೆಲೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದುಬಾರಿ ಊರಾದ ಕಾರಣ ಅವರು ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ತೊರೆದು ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಖವಾಗಿದ್ದು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮತ್ತು ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಜೊತೆ ಗೋವಿಂದರಾಯರು ಮುದ್ರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಪ್ತರಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗುಜರಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಖ್ಯಾತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಾರ ಕೀರ್ತಿನಾಥ ಕುರ್ತಕೋಟಿಯವರನ್ನು ಸಂಧಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಂದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಬರೆಸಿ ಅವರ ಸನೀಹವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಭಂಡಾರವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮನೋಹರ ಗ್ರಂಥಮಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾಕೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಪುಸ್ತಳ ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ ನಂಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭವನ್ನು ಓದಿದಾಗ ಅದರ ಕಾರಣ ತಿಳಿಯಿತು.
ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಎಂದೆಂದೂ ಹಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಬರೆದವರಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಮನೋಹರ ಗ್ರಂಥಮಾಲೆಯ ಜೋಶಿಯವರ ಜೊತೆ ನಡೆದ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಹಲವು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನರು ಹಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹಪಾಹಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅಂತ ತಿಳಿದರು. ಅವರ ಅಸಡ್ಡೆತನಕ್ಕೆ ಗೋವಿಂದರಾಯರು ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಖಾಯಂ ಮುದ್ರಣಗಾರರಾದರು. ಇದೆ ಗುಜರಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ತಂದೆಯವರು ತೀರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪನ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ. ಹೋದಾಗಲೊಮ್ಮೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಹಳೆಯ ಪಂಜೆ, ಅಂಗಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ತಂದೆ ತೀರಿಹೋದಮೇಲೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರೂ ಅವರು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಂತರದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಮದುವೆ , ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೀಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ ಜೀವನ. ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಕಂಡಂತಹ ಕೆಲವು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರುತ್ತದೆಂದರೆ ಆ ಗುಂಗಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರಲು ಸುಮಾರು ಐದಾರು ತಿಂಗಳು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಒಂದಾದಮೇಲೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಅವರ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಪರ್ವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆಯಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಆಯಾ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿಗೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿ, ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಕನ್ನಡವಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರು ಕಾಣದ ಒಂದು ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆಗೆ ಬರದವರಲ್ಲ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ತರಹದ ಶೈಲಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಬರಹ ಸೀಮಿತವಾದದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ಅವರ ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ ಹಲವಾರು ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಪದವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಪದ್ಮಭೂಷಣ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ , ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಸಮ್ಮಾನ್ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತರಾದ, ಸಂತೇಶಿವರ ಲಿಂಗಣ್ಣಯ್ಯ ಭೈರಪ್ಪರವರ ಜೀವನವೃತ್ತಾಂತವೇ ಈ "ಭಿತ್ತಿ", ಅವರ ಹಸ್ತಾಕ್ಷರ ಇರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನ್ನ ಪಾಲಾಗಿದ್ದು ನನ್ನ ಖುಷಿ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿಯಾಗಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಇವರ ಹುಟ್ಟು ಹಬ್ಬದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹಲವರಿಗೆ ದ್ವಂದ್ವ ಇದೆ , ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯ ಅವರೇ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವಂತೆ 26-7-1934 ಅವರ ನಿಜವಾದ ಜನುಮದಿನ , ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಕಡತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ 20-8-1931 ಎಂದು ನಮೂದಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಇದರ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಯನ್ನು ನೀವೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ಸೂಕ್ತ.

ಇನ್ನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವಷ್ಟು ಅರ್ಹತೆ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲವೆಂದೇ ಹೇಳುವೆ . ಒಬ್ಬರ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ವಿಮರ್ಶಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾರೂ ಬೆಳೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಆದರೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಆದರೂ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುವೆ.  

ಹಾಸನ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ, ಚನ್ನರಾಯಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಸಂತೇಶಿವರ ಇವರ ಊರು , ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಕಿತ್ತು ತಿನ್ನುವ ಬಡತನ , ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಊರಿಗೆ ವಕ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ಲೇಗ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬರ . ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ಸಾಲದೆಂಬಂತೆ ಅಪ್ಪ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜ್ಜಿಯ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಬೈಗುಳ , ಮೈಗಳ್ಳತನ , ಅಸಹ್ಯ ಎನ್ನಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆ , ಮಾವನ ಹೊಡೆತ. ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಮರೆಸುವ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ , ಸಹೋದರ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರ ಅಕ್ಕರೆ .

ಅವರ ಹುಡುಗಾಟದ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಜೀವನದ ಏಳು ಬೀಳುಗಳ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತುಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಏರಿದವರೆಗೂ,  ಪ್ರತೀ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ , ಹಾದಿಯನ್ನು ನಮಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವ ಹಾಗೆ ನೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ . ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ಅವರ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರದಂತೆ ನೋಡಿದ ಭಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅವರ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತಮ್ಮನ ಸಾವಿನ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಕಲ್ಲು ಹೃದಯವನ್ನೂ ಕರಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಶಿಸ್ತು, ಸಂಯಮ, ಛಲ, ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ಇವರಿಗೆ ಇವರೇ ಸಾಟಿ. ಕಷ್ಟ ಎಂದು ಕೊರಗುವ ಪ್ರತೀ ಜೀವಿಯು ಇವರ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು ತುಂಬಾ ಇದೆ . ಈಗಿನ ಎಷ್ಟೋ so called ಓದುಗರು ಇವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅತೀ ತುಚ್ಚವಾಗಿ ಮಾತಾಡುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಯಾವ ಅರ್ಹತೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಇವರು ಹೀಗೆಲ್ಲ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ.

"ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃತಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಅಂತಸ್ಸತ್ವದಿಂದ ತಾನು ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿಸಬೇಕು , ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಚಾರಗಳ ಟಾರ್ಚು ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಾರದು" ಎಂಬ ಅವರ ಹೇಳಿಕೆಯಂತೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದವರು ಅವರು , ಇವತ್ತು ಅದೇ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಇಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಬಹುದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಉತ್ತರಕಾಂಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದ ನಾನು ಅವರ ಉಳಿದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನ ಓದುವ ಬಯಕೆಯಾಯಿತು, ಗೃಹಭಂಗ,ಅನ್ವೇಷಣ,ಧರ್ಮಶ್ರೀ,ಆವರಣ,ಕವಲು,ಯಾನ,ದೂರಸರಿದರು,ನಾಯಿನೆರಳು,ದಾಟು,ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ, ತಬ್ಬಲಿಗಳನ್ನ ಓದಿದೆ. ಪರ್ವವನ್ನು ಶುರುಮಾಡುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ,ಈ ದೇವನಾರೋ ಎಂಬ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ(In OUR SCHOOL, Bengaluru) ಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಭೈರಪ್ಫನವರನ್ನು ಮೊದಲಬಾರಿ ಭೇಟಿಮಾಡಿದೆ, ಅಂದಿನ ದಿವಸ ನನಗೆ ಅವರ ಆತ್ಮಚರಿತ್ರೆ *ಭಿತ್ತಿ*ಯನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಆಸೆಯಾಯಿತು. ಭಿತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ ಅದರ ವಿವರಣೆಯು ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ

ಬಾಲ್ಯತನದಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆಯಿದು. ಗೃಹಭಂಗ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು, ಅನ್ವೇಷಣದ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥ ಪಾತ್ರವು, ಧರ್ಮಶ್ರೀಯ ಸತ್ಯನ ಪಾತ್ರವು ಇವರ ನಿಜಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಲುತ್ತವೆ,
ಅವರ ಮೊಟ್ಟಮೊದಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ "ಜಟ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಟ್ಟಿ" ಅದುವೇ ಭಿಮಾಕಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ,
ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಗತಜನ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳಕುಮೂಡಿತು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು 18ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿವರಣೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಖ್ಯಾತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ,ಅದು ಮೌಲ್ಯ,ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಸಂಘರ್ಷಗಳ,ಅರ್ಥವಿಸ್ತಾರದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಅದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಲಪಾತ,ಮತದಾನ ಮತ್ತು ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ದಾಟು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗೆ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯು ಲಭಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬರೆದ ನಂತರ   ಅವರು ಪಟ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪರ್ವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ಓಂದು ಖ್ಯಾತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದಾಟು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು 14 ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುವಾದಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಪರ್ವ,ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ  ಇನ್ನು ಹಲವು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುವಾದಗೂಂಡಿದೆ.

ಈಗಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಇದೂಂದು ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಅವರ ಬಾಲ್ಯತನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿಯೇ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕು.

Amazing journey. One has to be tough like SLB sir to handle this kind of tough life. Having lost his mother at an early age, not able to put up with his loaf father, SLB sir had taken his life against all odds and emerged as a winner. None of the fortunate kids in this era will understand the ups and downs that SLB sir has went through in his life. He faced all kind of struggles that we can only imagine from movies or fictional novels.

He has documented his entire life in many of his novels. The prime novel being "Grihabhanga", where he has written exactly the same story that he has actually went through in his life. The other novel where we can see his life has been documented is "Anveshana".

Somehow I sensed that he has written his autobiography quickly. He would've waited for till the release of Aavarana, so that we would've come to know the struggle he has put up while writing that novel. :)

Overall, a true inspiration for many generations, if you can't get inspired by this autobiography and learn a thing or two for your life, then I must say that, you'll never get inspired by anything.!! Must read for every kannada soul.

ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಘಟನೆಗಳು ನೆಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದಿಂದ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಾಡಿತು. ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವಯಸ್ಸಿನೊಳಗೆ ಬೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಓದಿದಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಜ್ಞಾನಾರ್ಜನೆಯ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗಿದ್ದ ತುಡಿತ ಅವರು ಪಟ್ಟಂತಹ ಕಷ್ಟ ಅವರು ನೆಡೆದು ಬಂದ ದಾರಿ ಜೀವನದ ಕಡೆಗಿನ ನನ್ನ ಭಾವನೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲವಾದರೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವಾದರೂ ಬದಲಿಸಿದ��� ಎಂಬುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಸಂಶಯವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.

The book has been wonderfully translated by S Ramaswamy and L V Shathakumari. They have been able to create the feel of the environment, where Bhyrappa spent childhood years; moved to different places in search of living; education; service and getting unimaginable experiences in his life. Bhyrappa’s exceptional life story is complex-and so is the task hard to review this book.
Bhyrappa, tells his life as a well-knit story, much like a novel, in a novel way. It is a struggle with extreme poverty and bitter experiences, when he is moved for his early education, staying with his maternal uncle, who used to beat him hard on many occasions, in spite of working whole day from early morning, including puja at the Shiv temple, where his uncle was appointed purohit. The conditions under which he sustained and continued education, in bits and pieces, are too heart wrenching. But, as a student-from school days to completion of his MA, and subsequently getting Ph.D. -he excels! He was a top debater in his schools, and colleges. Alongside, he also learnt Sanskrit for many years, so that he can better understand the Hindu scriptures-for his philosophy studies.
The book will inspire every one who reads it. How Bhyrappa develops his values of life, at very tender age-and introspects from time to time to strengthen them-is itself a lesson in character building and spirituality. Wonderful opportunities appear before him, now and then, but his decisions, to avail and accept, are guided by his strong value-belief system. He even gave up pursuing his research, for D. Lit, much against wishes of his guide (in Ph.D.), Dr. Javadekar.
His passion for creative writing took precedence over all other activities. But he realised that moving and mixing with people of all types, castes and nationalities were necessary for his creativity. He is a connoisseur of Hindustani classical music, and he himself learnt it for quite many years. He also listened to lot, lot of western classical music also. Many of the creative inputs for his novels came while listening to Hindustani classical music. He has missed no opportunity to spend long hours seeing museums and spend time in secluded places, to be with nature. Climbing hills, is also another passion. He has widely and frequently travelled and mixed with people at all levels-in cities, villages, in other countries. All this, and much more- to get experiences for writing creatively. This itself could be a good learning for any writer!
There is so much more in the life of this genius, a Gyanpeeth Awardee writer-the highest literary recognition in India- who has found meaning in life, even after considering what he faced all along. Few illustrative observations can be mentioned to highlight some.
• Even as a Brahmin, he had to face caste conflicts: while studying, he was force to accept food through ‘varrana, ‘bhikshanna’. However, even those were stopped because he had not gone through his ‘thread ceremony’.
• Though, he did not believe in caste system, he was blamed-particularly after publication of his celebrated novel, ‘Parva’.
• Early in life he lost his two brothers and sisters and mother. He had to carry dead body of his younger brother, on shoulder to cremate, with hardly anyone to console.
• Sheer poverty drove him to pursue education, with breaks-trying for getting in to army; going to Mumbai, to earn money.
• Had to engage in various jobs, for sustenance, like gate keeping at cinema theatre; telling stories by performing in village gatherings, cooking food for colleagues. Working as a coolie, at Mumbai railway station and driving Victoria carriage to ferry passengers.
• Facing police lock up, on fictitious charges.
The book provides beautiful description of his travels to Himalayas. He was in the first batch of travellers to Kailash-Mansarovar, when it was first opened by China. One gets the feel of the chill, when he takes five holy dips, in the Mansarovar, situated at 15000 feet, in spite of running temperature a day earlier-and strongly discouraged by the doctor there.
Bhyrappa describes his dedication, respect and emotions with people, who moved him, taught him, and positively pushed him! He lost his mother quite early-with whom he was too much attached. Every now and then, he remembers Yamunacharya, his teacher of philosophy, Dr. Javadekar, his guide for PhD. He has devoted last chapter to Govind Rao, his first and only publisher-quite senior to him. He gives a touching tribute, at the time of his death.

I cannot control my tears while reading, I quote him, “He (Govind Rao) was the screen between me and death. The intervening screen was removed and I was filled with the feeling that I myself became elder.”

Autobiography at its best

Namaste. This is the first and only Autobiography I have read. Śrī S.L. Bhyrappa's is an extraordinary man. To follow him from childhood to his retirement years was an endearing experience, and made me much more sympathetic toward people; the hardships they deal with, and the courage/resolve needed to rise above a given situation. His writing is honest, and the events described are truthful depictions of life- no ornamentation or dramatization to be found here. This, I believe, is the correct approach to writing an autobiography. In many ways, I felt more like a participant, than a mere witness to the unforgiving trials faced by Śrī Bhyrappa.

No review on any of Bhyrappa's books would be complete without restating what he is rightly characterized as- A pan Indian author who only happens to write in Kannada. Bhyrappa has traveled the length and breadth of India, and if my facts serve me well, has visited some 400+ different villages. For someone like me who grew up in an urban environment, 'Bhitti' was a portal into rural India. I learnt much about the village systems, the traditional roles of Shanbhāgs, Paṭels, Jamindārs, among others. It also made me appreciate just how privileged we are, and how little we have had to struggle against adversity. It definitely made me count my blessings :).

One final point: His books are written in Kannada, and translated into other languages (regional as well as English). The English translation I read was superlative, and I must really bow down to the effort and precision with which S. Ramaswamy and L. V. Shanthakumari brought it out. Running 661 pages, this is no light task.

Having said that, Bhyrappa ji did however mention in an interview (and prior experiences independently brought me to the same conclusion) that translations BETWEEN Indian languages (say, from Kannaḍa to Gujarati, or Tamil) tend to carry more of the original flavor and intent, than translating to a foreign language (that includes English). The reason for this is any language develops as a medium to best convey the nuances of the civilization from which it originated. Therefore, most Indian languages will have synonymous words to convey the shared cultural expression of Indians, and it is these nuances and specifics that get washed away when translating to a foreign language.

On that note, this pleased reader is definitely going to check out more of Śrī Bhyrappa's writings translated in Gujarati or Hindi :)

I'm astonished by reading this book, what a man he is, how he struggled in his life and faced them is truly inspirational.

He writes his biography without any self-praising and depicted very naturally, that's most of the authors didn't.

If you haven't read the books which are published before this book, I suggest read those books first then jump on to this otherwise you'll get hint of the story of other novels.

A great author and a great autobiography. The details gets a little boring sometimes but guess it was needed. It gives you the idea that how he creates his character and weaves life around them. Hats off to scholar who has seen so much hardship and poverty but his passion to study and write made him what he is today. Great inspiration and triumph of spirit and humanity.

Very indulging, Hardships faced by Bhyrappa after losing his mother at very early age, His attempts to join defence , to become entrepreneur listening to his friend , then joining wandering monks in Mumbai , then his work life all these experiences and his thoughts on Stark reality of Indian society all in all a fascinating read.
