The action-packed, captivating fifth instalment in the bestselling series AN HEIR COMES TO RISE from Chloe C. Peñaranda.
When a true heir awakens, a returning past can break. And when war follows, a lifelong vow may shatter.
A RISE… Awakening from a dark defeat, Faythe discovers a greater threat to the life she took back. Staggering truths will challenge her and reveal that some bonds were forged to defy. With the battle lost, the war has just begun, and as an enemy is captured, it soon becomes clear a storm can be tamed but never bottled.
A THRONE… Her return to Rhyenelle stirs Faythe’s rival to the throne. In this new twist of fate, against the pressures of the court, it’s a test of strength and will to keep her cunning cousin at bay. Two hands reaching for a crown is a challenge bound to end in blood, but which one will bleed for their right to reign?
A PHOENIX… Still, no conflict in the realm can match that which began long ago. The time is now for Faythe to face her title of heir before kingdom. But not without the help of those tied in destiny may the Phoenix Queen rise should all burn and fall.
The fact that Chloe Penaranda hasn't been sued for copyright by Sarah J Maas yet is shocking to me. This book follows the exact same plot, has the same characters, has the same magical abilities, the same evil villains, and literally the same everything. Even some of the names are eerily similar to ToG. She even stole Dorian's magic hands from ToG and gave them to another character. There were whole sentences stolen directly from ToG. Not to mention this book probably could have been 300 pages shorter, if the storyline didn't repeat between each couple multiple times, and we didn't read the same paragraphs over and over and over.
Will I read the next installment? Probably. Will I enjoy it? No. Will I recommend this book to literally anyone? No.
honestly, if I could sum up this book in one word it would be: horrific.
The writing wasn’t bad, I actually enjoyed the last books but this one was something else. Sometimes I would stare at the page wondering if the author just took a page out of TOG or ACOTAR and just changed the names. Like yes, all fantasy books have the same tropes but this was like word for word.
Oh and it was so slow. I honestly could not care less about the amount of times Reylan would love bomb Faythe like hello??? Where did their tension go? Also I could not care less about some characters. The book could have been SO much shorter. The story was interesting in the last book but this was too much of “oh I don’t know who to love” “oh I don’t deserve to be loved” “oh but I love you so” “no I love you more” “oh angel (if someone called me angel I would puke) blah blah blah”
Also some of the (few) fight scenes were so hard to read. Faythe got a bit annoying and it was not it for me.
~ Who hurt you? ~ Plot Twist/Betrayal ~ Emotional Rollercoaster
✨ My Thoughts ✨ It has taken me weeks to think of what to write for a review because I want to do this book justice. Honestly, there is no amount of words that can. Chole has done it again. This book was fantastic. I loved every minute of it. The new characters and new pairings... 👀🥵 The heartbreak in some characters and their story. The true love that is shown between some characters was amazing. I'm still not over the plot twist and the betrayals. Seeing some of the foreshadowing that comes to light in this book was great and mind-blowing. The ending absolutely ruined me. I cried the day after reading because I couldn't get over it. This was my top book 2022. It is now in my top favorite books I have ever read. I truly have loved seeing Chole's writing grow. I need the next book so so badly. If you haven't started this series please do. I can't recommend it enough.
A Sword From the Embers is book 5 in The Heir Comes to Rise series by Chole Peñaranda. This book is out on January 24th, 2023. It is NA. As always please check TW before reading.
I want to give a big thank you to Chloe for giving me this ARC. I have loved to be on her launch team. This review is my honest and true thoughts.
There is no other rating I could give this book besides a 5 star. But before I start with this review, I would like to thank the author for this eARC opportunity. ♥️ Like always, this review is completely voluntary and honest.
This has been my most anticipated read of this year and will be one of my top picks of books released in 2023. To me, this is Chloe's best book yet and that's not to say that all of her books are not completely incredible. They are. However, this one just brought out so much emotion from me and I am just... speechless in a way. Chloe is definitely a mastermind when it comes to foreshadowing events with the smallest details. I am just in awe of it.
What I loved from this book: Let me be honest, I loved everything about it. The development of the plot and just the main story was incredible. There were many moments that I was thinking, "where is this going" and it was incredible to see it all fall into place in the most remarkable way. The found family aspect, the self-discovery of Faythe and her road to acceptance of her new self, the betrayal, the love, the angst. The realization that war has no mercy and it is not kind. This book was an emotional rollercoaster that I would go through all over again for the first time if I could.
Moving on to characters. Faythe. Her growth in each book never ceases to amaze me. Without giving spoilers, we see Faythe fall into who she was always meant to be. The role she never thought she would have and yet already shows there is no one better for it. My heart goes out to her for all of her resilience and the never-ending strength and hope she has. Seriously, one of my favorite heroines of all time. One who we see is not wholly good, but not bad either.
Reylan. We all know I love him so much and the side we see of him in this book had me screaming and sobbing and all giddy. Like I said, rollercoaster of emotions. There is more to him than being the broody, brave and fierce warrior General of Rhyenelle and I loved this new side of him. The more open him. The REAL him. So much growth and I truly enjoyed reading his POV chapters. I cannot wait to see more of it in the following books.
Nik, Tauria, Livia, Kyleer, Tarly, Nerida, Zaiana. As well as so many other characters that completely stole my heart and I would go into each of them in detail, but this review would be pages long. However, each one of them have such an essential role in this series as a whole. You cannot help but love seeing their own stories, their own plots develop within the bigger plot of the series. Every single character is so well written, it is just beautiful to see each of them be developed in such a perfect way. Each couple will also steal your heart and stomp on it at times, but you will root for them regardless.
In conclusion, yes. I 100% do believe you should read this book. This series as a whole. The world development is executed wonderfully by the author. Also, I've said it before but I will say it again for this book. It was like a cinematic experience from beginning to end. Give this series a chance, you will NOT regret it. ❤️🔥
I actually enjoyed this series but I feel I cannot in good conscious give it a high rating because it is literally a ripoff of Throne of Glass, ACOTAR, and From Blood and Ash. I am almost surprised this author did not get hit with a copywrite infringement From Sarah J Maas.
Oh the pain I'm feeling after finishing this book...
First I would like to thank the author for this eARC opportunity. As always all thoughts and feelings are entirely honest for this review.
I've always rated these books highly. The characters, the world, the writing..it's amazing and immersive. I want to rate more than five stars even with my heart in absolute pieces for this book. The development of each character was perfect. Faythe has grown so much since book one and even since the beginning of this book. She's learning to turn the pain and loss she endures into power that helps propel her forward and not pull her down. It's not an immediate shift to that understanding and that makes it feel much more real and relatable.
Reylan...oh he has my entire heart. (Slightly shares it with Kyleer..more on him later though) Reylan goes through a lot of growth in this book to that you wouldn't think he needed. His willingness to step into a role he didn't want (though he wholeheartedly deserves it) was something I enjoyed reading about. It made him more than just a love interest (not that he ever was JUST that to me). My heart broke with him and Faythe at the end..
Kyleer. Oh, I was not expecting to be so enthralled with his and Zaiana's dynamic/relationship. Omg talk about a TRUE enemies to (almost/kinda) lovers. His will to believe in Zaiana and push her to believe in him and herself. Beautiful. I ONLY trust him right now.
Tarly was not one I expected to absolutely LOVE. Like he was growing on me in ACOTC but now he is not allowed to be harmed. AT ALL. He's been through enough and deserves to be happy with Nerida. Even though I still have so many unanswered questions about them..
Zaiana gosh her development (though it doesn't seem like it at times) IT'S there! She needs Ky and Faythe in book six to help her make the hard decision but the RIGHT decision. I want to see a friendship of sorts grow between her and Faythe. It's there, Ky and Faythe are the ones to break through to her.
While I'm left with a shattered heart and so many more questions than when I started this book, this book was truly beautiful and emotional. Please pick up this series, you will not be disappointed.
The BETRAYAL I still feel. I have a list for the betrayers even though for some I hope there's a DAMN good REASON for it.
THE LIST (Book BESTIES will understand): * * * For sure SPOILERS below! * * * Malin (cliff) Rueben (cliff) Maverick (cliff) Izaiah (small? cliff) Marlowe and Jakon because they are ONE (small? cliff)

I’m honored to have beta read ASFTE so I’ve had quite a while to think over my review. But the truth is, I have no words. Nothing could ever do this story justice because it’s an absolute masterpiece.
A quick PSA before I get to the full review: If you thought you could skip ACOTC and dive into ASFTE right after book 3…think again! You will be lost and very confused. A lot of what’s covered in this book is the result of everything that’s happened in ATFTA and ACOTC. Including a new character POV who I hope you all enjoy!!
This book is loaded with twists and turns. And what I love most about Chloe’s writing is that every sentence, every word, is carefully crafted and rich with delicious foreshadowing crumbs. Blink and you might miss them! This is one of those stories you cannot skim over finer details or else you’ll miss something important. Every chapter, character interaction, and scene has a purpose!
These characters will take you on a heart wrenching journey from beginning to end as each of them have a story to tell and arc to complete on their quest to end Marvellas’ wrath. I absolutely LOVE this character. Female villains are usually hit or miss for me but Marvellas checks off all the boxes for this villain apologist. There are a couple new ships in this book, too, that I am completely and utterly IN LOVE with! As always, Faythe and Reylan are the icing on the cake.
I can’t say anything more because of SPOILERS, but I can’t stop recommending this series!! Truly hope everyone loves this book as much as I do. ASFTE deserves all the stars ✨
I would like to first thank the author for providing me with an e-ARC of the book. All of the following thoughts and opinions are genuine and unique to me :)
Now, on to business.
This book ripped my heart from my chest, threw it to the ground, stomped on it, and then proceeded to throw into traffic to get ran over. A book has never quite evoked so many emotions from me as this one did. I laughed, swooned (many times at that ), cried (many times), and experienced anger. The fact that I was an emotional mess alone should show that this was an amazing book. This is definitely one of my favorite releases of 2023 and I will take any opportunity to rave about this series.
This latest installment in the series introduces so many new aspects to the story telling that have you making multiple theories and sitting on the edge of your seat with anticipation. I have the entire book highlighted and have a multitude of notes with reactions, theories, and overall feels.
The book picks up immediately where the last one ended and I could not have been more thankful for that because I needed closure from the disaster that happened to our group of heroes.
Faythe is an amazing character and she remains strong despite all that she has been through. She is truly inspiring. The amount of times that she stepped into her power and remained brave in the face of uncertainty was something else. The speeches that she gives as a future Queen to the kingdom had me yelling into the void with excitement. She has come such a long way from book 1 and I cannot wait for the havoc she is sure to wreck in the next book.
Reylan has my heart (along with Kyleer now). He has always seen the best in Faythe and been supportive of her, every step of the way. But this book is special for him because I personally feel that he grew the most. He deserves the world and I need him to be happy with Faythe soon, but I know that Chloe will make us work for that HEA.
Kyleer and Zaiana were unexpected but appreciated nonetheless. UGH the tension between them literally jumped off the pages. They are truly the depiction of enemies to lovers and their scenes together were amazing. They work so well together when they shouldn't and that definitely adds to the angst of them. The way that their story concluded in this book, frankly broke my heart (at this point what didn't wound me). I have an inkling of where this will go in book 6 and I cannot wait to see if I will be correct when it comes to these two.
Tarly and Nerida were the most wholesome of the couples and I loved every second of it. Tarly was a character that I grew a deep kind of affection for in book 4 and this book only solidified this love for him. He has been so alone and hurting for so long, so to see him break in that one chapter did things to my heart too. Nerida is a fascinating new character that has so many secrets and potential. I love that she is a healer but willing to do what needs to be done to defend those she cares about. I am super excited to see what is done with her character and how her relationship with Tarly is developed, They are too cute.
I was quite shocked to not see any Jakon and Marlowe chapters in this book, but considering what happens at the end, it all makes so much sense. I have confidence that we will get something from them in the next book. They need to have earth shattering explanations/reasons for what they did and I am impatient to see exactly what they are.
Faythe Ashfyre has been unleashed and she will seek to win back what is hers at all costs. She has lost so much, but the image of her enemies obliterated before her keeps her going . Does that make me a horrible person, if I say that I cannot wait for the destruction and retribution she will bestow upon all. She has attempted to be the better person, time and time again so to see her finally decide to take a new route, only heightens and humanizes her character even more. I can say with confidence that I will LOVE every second of what is to come.
Chloe has a habit of making sure that I know no peace with the way she continuously ends her books. This cliffhanger was especially cruel and I am dying for the next book already.Despite the pain I am caused, I want her to know that she is appreciated as an author. I cannot properly express my love for this book and this series. This was a cinematic masterpiece in my head, Chloe did an amazing job with her story telling and development of her characters. This is definitely a ride or die series for me and I will always show up for it, every single time without fail. I 1000% recommend this to anyone who enjoys epic story telling :)

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of A Sword from the Embers and ended up taking off of work to finish reading it. If that doesn’t tell you how much I enjoyed it, let me continue..
For the sake of caution, I’m going to try to be fairly vague so I don’t mention any accidental spoilers. So this whole review is probably one big “iykyk”.
One of the things I wanted to touch on first is how much I love the cast in the AHCTR series. I’ve noticed a lot of series with larger casts often sacrifice the depth and growth of secondary characters to focus on the leads but that is honestly not the case with AHCTR and that is even more evident with ASFTE. I was completely enraptured by every single POV. The story, much like in the previous books, tends to hop around to show us what all the major players are doing. But more than just laying down the plot, these different POVs immerse you in the characters to show their innermost thoughts and feelings as well as their interactions with other characters. You learn why they are the way they are and what bigger role they might have to play in all of this. Chloe does an amazing job of making you feel for so many different characters rather than just focus all the character growth and attention on the main characters. This really helps to make the storytelling truly well-rounded.
One of the biggest themes, I think, in this particular book is around mental health. I figured we would be introduced to some tumultuous feelings after everything Faythe went through in ATFTA but I wasn’t expecting to be introduced to similar struggles in other characters. Hoping not to sound completely sadistic here but I loved seeing this side to these strong characters. It made them so relatable and really makes the reader see more than what they might have seen previously. It gives these characters depth and shows that these feelings can affect anyone and how different people can deal with it.
Now moving onto THAT ENDING. I really wish I could say everything I want to but that would ruin so much. What I will say is that I have so many questions. I was caught completely by surprise at certain events and left really confused. I know everything will be answered eventually but I’m having trouble wrapping my mind around how exactly we got here. I have one qualm with the very end but I think I can imagine the explanation so I’m not too upset about it. I just want everyone to be happy but they sure are being put through a lot of shit before they get there!
Also, I have a new couple I’m completely obsessed with and am trying to figure out the ship name. If they are not endgame, I will riot.
Well done, Chloe. I can’t wait to find out how this all is going to play out.
“monsters can take many faces. don’t be fooled by the ones they wear to lure you in.”
╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌
this book was so. boring. i’m sorry. it was so hard to get through. this book did not need to be 800 pages. this series does not need to be 5 books (with more coming??). like again, i’m sorry, but nothing happened in this book. 800 pages and i can count maybe like 3 semi important things that happened. faythe is alive and goes home, nik and tauria’s bond was broken (which btw was such a stupid decision that made no sense), and then the ending was important i guess. on top of that, i feel like the book could have been done so much more differently? for example, we find out that apparently faythe can somehow manipulate elements now? i think it would have been cool to see her actually try and train those abilities instead of just sitting around on her ass like she always does. next, some of the relationships seemed so random and forced. like kyleer and zaianna? really? when zaianna obviously already has something going on with maverick? and then the author hits us with the “i always felt something for you, years ago, but you don’t remember” like i’m sorry what’s up? it’s so stupid. i can’t with it. finally, the amount of smut in this book was not it for me. at one point, it felt like smut was happening every chapter. and all of these characters i fell in love with became these like sex crazed weirdos. like huhh???? why are is nik feeling up tauria while they are on a VERY IMPORTANT MISSION to watch and learn information about their GREATEST ENEMY. and then have sex after he LEAVES??? i don’t get it and i don’t like it. over all, the book was way too long and did not need to be 800 pages, and this series in general does not need to be this long. it feels like the author is trying to drag out the series because she obviously wants it to be a huge epic fantasy series, but there just isn’t enough content to do that, and in consequence of that, the books end up being really dragged out and boring. also, all of the characters decisions just make no sense and are so out of character. i really hope the next book in the series is the last one so i can just finally lay this series to rest, because god knows this series really should have been only like 4 books.
edit: came back and gave this book one star after ranting to myself all the stuff i hated about this book and series as a whole
This book is everything you can expect in a high fantasy series by a brilliant author. It's emotional, heartbreaking and brings you so much knowledge and pieces of the puzzle.
Chloe is a mastermind, an amazing and talented author that is a master of fore shadowing. I mean, seriously some things have been right in front of us since book 1.
I was on edge throughout the entire book, it kept me wanting to read and to learn more and more about this story. It's addictive and loaded with actions, twists, turns everything you need to enjoy this read.
The multiple pov are amazing and every little detail is important and even crucial to the story. You need everything, every words, every actions and especially ACOTC from those wondering.
This series keeps on getting better and I cannot wait to learn more and explore this incredible world that Chloe created.
Also I'm the newly self acclaimed and proclaimed defender of a ship. I love them with all my heart but will say nothing.
5 stars! A big thank you to the author for giving me a copy of the ARC - I am incredibly grateful. Chloe, thank you so much for creating this fantasy world with such unique and wonderful characters - this has come to be one of my favorite series and I am already counting down the days until the next book!
This book was incredible - the character development, the heartbreak, the betrayal. It was all so lovely and intense and at times completely unexpected.
Faythe is such a badass and her character continues to grow in this book. She really steps up in her new role and fights for her place, even while working through the self-doubt she still harbors. I’m anxious to see how Faythe will overcome the betrayals we witnessed from Izaiah and Marlowe - I’m still in complete shock. I am looking forward to seeing her friendship with Kyleer grow in the next book - his character is fascinating and the two have such a unique bond. I had a feeling her connection to Marvellas was deeper than we knew, but the twist at the end had my jaw on the floor! I just know that story will be intense.
I have loved Reylan since we were first introduced to him, but his POV chapters in this book are so lovely and heartbreaking. He has grown so much and I loved seeing his love for Faythe from his perspective. I was in tears when their last night together was cut too short - I just want Reylan to have his happily ever after and to truly know he’s unconditionally loved! I cannot wait to see what comes next for him and for their relationship and will be impatiently waiting for Faythe to reveal the secrets she’s holding about Reylan and their past.
My heart breaks for Nik and Tauria, but I loved seeing them sacrifice for what they thought would save them all and work together despite their heartbreak.
I was glad to see Tarly again and it will be interesting to see how his position and connections with Tauria and Nerida play out in the next book. Seeing him open up the more he’s around Nerida is too sweet and I hope he gets to be happy soon.
I knew there was something special about Nerida once Tarly points out how secretive and closed off she is. What a fun twist! I’m looking forward to learning more about her story.
I was really hoping for a redemption arc for Zaiana, but I can’t say that I was surprised when she ends up on the enemy’s side at the end. Maybe we will see her fight against those that broke her later on.
We don’t see much of Maverick in this book, but I was shocked when Faythe yells out his old name. How Faythe knew who Maverick was and why he continues to hide everything from Zaiana will be fascinating to read.
A Sword from the Embers comes out January 24 and you shouldn’t hesitate to read it! It is intense and beautiful - it is one of my favorite books of the series. I am SO EXCITED to see what comes next for everyone. Thank you again Chloe for creating this magical world and sharing it with us.

I need a minute to digest this because im so angry at this book right now. UPDATE: I just typed a huge review and it all got deleted (: anyway im back and im still annoyed at this book. To start off, this book did not further the plot of the series at all. It was way too long with so much unnecessary information that did nothing for the story. We had 5 different POV’s and most of them were background characters that again, didn’t contribute to the plot at all. It was like the author just added chapters to fill space that were not needed. There was also many small problems and questions added and nothing was resolved at the end. I feel like i cant even remeber what the main point of the story is because theres so many tiny issues that keep getting thrown in randomly.
I also found that sometimes the author was trying to be poetic with the writing in terms of descriptions, but sometimes it was too poetic that I couldnt even understand what was supposed to be happening.
Onto the characters, i love reylan but Faythe has gotten annoying. Her entire pov and personality focuses so much on friendship and protecting those she loves excepts most of the friendships in the book are shit. Basically everyone betrays her and she continues to forgive and absolve people which is very lame in my opinion. Over the course of the series we see faythe grow into her power so in this book she is supposed to be the strongest shes ever been except she doesnt do anything of note until the last 20 pages of the book, where her pov just goes between raging and being depressed, which was also hard to understand with how poetic it was written. Zianna had a good development from last book to this one, but for me it was ruined at the end so it felt like a waste of so much of the story.
I rated all of the other books in this series highly because i enjoyed the previous books. I also said in my reviews how similar the books are to TOG. That being said, i cant in good conscience give this book a high rating because of how much of a ripoff it is of sjm.
All in all, this was a boring book. I basically forced myself to finish it because i had thought it was the last book in the series and i wanted a conclusion to all of the random problems the author created. Imagine my disappointed to find out this is not the last book. Im not sure if i will end up reading the next book when it comes out because of how disappointed i was by this one. Hopefully Faythe actually grows a backbone and displays the strength she’s supposed to have?? And we get answers to the 57 tiny issues and plot points dispersed through the different books.
𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬: A Sword from the Embers is book 5 in the “An Heir Comes to Rise” series and I swear this series just gets better and better with every book.
“𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶…”
Chloe is absolutely brilliant at creating foreshadowing throughout her series that part of me wants to stop what I’m reading right now and jump right back into book 1 so that I can find all of the Easter eggs I missed out on the first time round.
What I love about this series, is the fact that the secondary characters aren’t forgotten about but actually each get their own POV’s, as they each play such an essential role in the storyline. I actually get so excited when I get to read about their own stories and their own plot developments especially as it relates as a whole to the series. Chloe does an exceptional job at creating characters you can’t help but fall in love with & characters that just own a part of your heart. Even when you get completely blindsided and your heart gets ripped out of your chest. The emotional rollercoaster will leave your head spinning and a million and one questions running through your mind. Cue the ending??? Like what? Why???
Thanks again to Chloe for the eArc for my honest review.
It's been a long while since I have read a book that made me feel so much. The mysteries, the romance, political intrigue and plotting! I loved the growth in some characters, and how they supported their family, their friends. What I particularly, respected more the trauma of what Faythe went through and how she saw something similar in another. How she fought for them in her own way.
In some areas I was so surprised! I'd go from OMG 😱 to oh.my. god 🥵🥰 and in other areas it was predictable in who was doing what. There are some new characters and new potentially pairings that I am routing for.
My emotions throughout the book: 🥰🥵😱😭🤩👀🥹🤔🫨 I need the next book... now... please !
ASFTE takes place after A Clash of Three Courts. Please do not skip that book.
I will not spoil anything major, but there will be minor spoilers ahead, so read with caution.
. .
I must say, this book surprised me in the best of ways.
I had my theories, and where I thought things might be headed, but I wasn’t expecting the major character development and the plot growth we see in this book.
Faythe in this book finds herself at a crossroads as heir to the throne.
With a developing romance with Reylan, and the weight of the world at her shoulders, she finds herself overwhelmed by all of it. Faythe and Reylan have a long journey ahead of them both as individuals, and as a couple. I appreciate that they still have a lot of growth to go through. They tug at my heart strings in the best of ways.
Nik and Tauria’s storyline took a wild turn I wasn’t expecting. I’m REALLY invested in seeing where that plot thread leads us. I love them and their story so much. You can really appreciate the growth they experienced in ACOTC in ASFTE. They’re one of my favorite couples hands down.
We get to see old and new faces in our povs. Some were expected, and some were not. I enjoyed each surprise contained within them. The character development was great. Even for characters you didn’t plan on getting invested in.
My favorite pov is Zaiana’s. I had a feeling she would be challenged in this story, but didn’t expect just how much. There’s a bit of a love triangle in her pov that I found refreshing, and this is coming from someone that detests love triangle tropes.
Zaiana in her pov builds a beautiful relationship over time with a character a lot of us wanted more of. If you reread ATFTA, there’s a good chance you’ll know who it is.
No, I won’t confirm anything. ;) But I ADORED every minute of them. What they shared helped Zaiana grow, and it helped Zaiana rediscover parts of herself she long thought dead. It’ll be interesting to see where Zaiana’s story leads us next.
And Maverick, wow. Maverick is one of those characters where I can easily see him getting a pov. He has A LOT of answers hidden within those black eyes.
Marvellas is a delicious female antagonist I wish we had more of. She’s fantastically evil, while also having a soft spot for our main protagonist. She’s intriguing, and a complete show stopper whenever she’s around. I adore her.
Overall, the reading experience was great.
I feel certain things could’ve been a little cut down. There were also times where things felt a little repetitive, but none of it ruined the experience. You could feel the love and care that went into crafting this story from the very first page.
“You weren’t born to remain hidden.” Reylan watched her with an air of awe. “You were born to rise. Made to defy. To carry the dreams of those who can’t fight for them.” . . This story is a continuation of the An Heir Comes to Rise series told from multiple viewpoints as the battle against Marvellas continues. Faythe is trying to come to terms following the battle at the end of A Throne from the Ashes while also trying to cement her position as heir to the throne of Ryenelle. Nik and Tauria are doing what they can to help Faythe in the battle ahead. Zaiana is still struggling with who she is, who she wants to be, and what role she’ll play in the war. Finally Tarly is also trying to figure out how to move forward following everything he learned and decisions he made in A Clash of Three Courts. Alliances are made, enemies are lurking everywhere, and even the smallest decisions can have lasting consequences. . . This book destroyed me in the best way. It has easily become my favorite read for 2022. The plot twists, ships, and heartbreaks had me hooked from the first page. I found it impressive how many little breadcrumbs littered throughout the series have come back in big ways as each novel progresses. Having the story told from multiple viewpoints makes the plot that much more enjoyable from my viewpoint since we get to see how one plot point impacts and affects different characters in different ways. I haven’t had a story affect me to the degree this one has since “take it off” from ToG. My heart hurt for the characters 💔. I must also add that I’m usually pretty good at picking out twists and turns in books, but there were so many that I did not see coming making it all the more shocking. I feel like I need to do a reread already to go back and find all the foreshadowing. Ultimately, be ready to not sleep until you’ve finished the novel as you’ll begging to see what happens next. . . The only complaint I have about this book is that I need the next one stat and this one hasn’t officially released yet after the way Chloe ended the book. . . I received an eArc from the author for review
„I tried to be good. To be better. To be fair. To be kind. But they took him and I see..
„Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.“
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
I wish I could give it more stars. Jesus, I can’t say how much this series means to me. Chloe is such an underrated author, the way she always surprised us! You can’t get the plot twists before. It’s so damn hard to predict and if there is then the plot twist, you are so damn blown away. Like WTF is happening?
I love every single couple in this series.
Faythe & Reylan? A force to be reckon with. Enchanted Lovers. I will always find you trope. They are everything. General Perfection & His Phoenix Queen ❤️🔥
Tauria & Nikalias? Also such a power couple. Cunning and smart. The ultimate actors & the way they both don’t need any magic bond because it doesn’t matter. They are a match made in heaven. I mean.. they are going to be Silverknight = literally a combination of their last names.🥹
The love triangle? Also such a huge thumbs up! Almost everytime the love triangle annoyed me. But here? Who do you want? Sexy as hell villainous maverick? Or shadow hands daddy ky? Well I want them both 😂 Zaiana Silverfair is such storm raging queen and I am on my knees for her. 💜
A couple that I gave my heart absolutely? Tarly and Nerida. They are both so fkn cute & deserve all the happiness in this world.
I could write way more about the characters, about the villains but well read for urself. It’s such a great series!
And now? I will cry with my bookish bestie with whom I read that myself to sleep because we have to wait 😭
To be completely fair, I read the first, skimmed all the ones in-between, and read this expecting an endgame. So one could say I’m responsible for my own disappointment. The whole story line is Maas-esque, cookie cutters of same characters and plot points given different names and colors and rearranged a bit. But oh man the cliches, cheesy monologues, tangential smut, “perfect” mate pairs left and right, and needless “sacrifices” that really should be chalked up to stupidity… it’s too much. The motivations for characters are muddy, many of the key players have been reduced to hyped up horn dogs obsessed with their mates…it’s just not good. There wasn’t any real resolution of any of the problems through the whole book, and ultimately nothing really happened that advanced the plot. It all felt like killing time until *hopefully* she can spit out a finale. I was really hoping for this to be last so I could finally lay it to rest. I don’t expect much other than hoping Faythe goes on a rampage and finally stops absolving everyone who betrays her.
i’ll try not to spoil… so the new little forbidden enemies ship in this had me kicking and screaming. i wasn’t expecting them but i i really hope chloe explores them further because the dynamic between them was scarily EVERYTHING you want in a fantasy couple. they just matched so perfectly and i found myself needing their chapters the most 😭😭 i cried like twelve times throughout the book and a few times i just sat there with my jaw on the floor staring into space. the writing was amazing as always and i don’t think i’ve ever been more excited and scared for the next book in a series. i don’t even know what else to say but i loved everything about it, except from that one little scene near the end between those two characters that felt like someone hit me with a truck and had me balling my fucking eyes out for twenty minutes. anyways loved it, five stars!!! need to book in an appointment with my therapist also
The first 90% of this book dragged. And I mean draaaaaagged. And then the plot twists at the end (ie who betrayed Faythe and who died) made no sense, came out of nowhere, and made certain character developments completely pointless. Where was the editing in this? Why didn't the editor say to the author, "hey I know you're going for shock value, but some of these plot twists don't make sense to the larger storyline."
This is the book that made me give up on the series, and that's saying a lot considering I read the second book.

Je veux crever. Mon cœur a fait des loopings à la fin. La suite va me détruire.
Why was it so bad oh my god im so disappointed. Reylan was my favorite character and now he is so bland and uninteresting, he is a GENERAL FFS stop making him a simp who cannot think about anything else than enjoying spicy time with Faythe sadly i think im not going to keep going with this serie
"You were born to rise. Made to defy. To carry the dreams of those who can't fight for them."
A Sword from the Embers is the fifth instalment in the An Heir Comes to Rise series by Chloe C. Peñaranda. Following the events of book four, A Clash of Three Courts, we are once again reunited with Faythe and Reylan, amongst others, in this continuation of this story.
Please note that if you intend to skip book four, A Clash of Three Courts, in the assumption of it being a spin-off then you will be left feeling lost and finding gaps in the story. Whilst book four lacks the presence of several of our core characters, it is vital in the continuation of the storyline. A Sword from the Embers continues almost immediately after the end of A Clash of Three Courts, and you will miss vital information on characters Nik, Tauria, Jakon, Marlowe and Tarly.
Awakening from a dark defeat, Faythe discovers a greater threat to the life she took back. Staggering truths will challenge her and reveal that some bonds were forged to defy. With the battle lost, the war has just begun. And as an enemy is captured, it soon became clear a storm can be tamed but never bottled.
Chloe C. Peñaranda has such a compelling and gripping way of telling her stories. From chapter one we are immediately pulled back to where we last saw Faythe and Reylan at the end of book three, A Throne From the Ashes. I was immediately drawn to Faythe and the journey we see her go through in this book. Time and time again Faythe has shown to not just be a fighter, but a survivor. As a human being self-aware of her limitations against the fae, we've watched Faythe fight time and time again triumph in her seemingly impossible task with the help of her closest companions. And yet in A Sword from the Embers we get to witness an entirely new side of Faythe. After making the ultimate sacrifice at the end of book three we get to watch her come back physically stronger. And yet we see Faythe more vulnerable and unsure than ever before. Faythe battles within herself in the next phase in her story, struggling to find acceptance in her new reality. Faythe's vulnerability is refreshing to witness as a reader. To see the main character fall, and needing to work harder than ever to stand back up. Although never alone, Faythe's journey of self-acceptance compelled me the most during this story.
By Faythe's side as always is our fierce and resilient general of Rhyenelle, Reylan. Reylan's self-journey was such a joy to read. We get to witness a vulnerability that we're not much exposed to in the previous books. With Faythe's newfound status as princess of Rhyenelle, Reylan battles with the uncertainty of the future their differing stations place them. Despite it all, Reylan's commitment and devotion to Faythe is soul-gripping. I found myself constantly fighting for them in my own mind. Begging them to push and persevere through all that set out to split them apart. The character growth we see along with the the love and the angst makes out for a gripping tale.
A Sword from the Embers brings us new ships to root for, unlikely alliances and ultimate betrayals. No stone is left unturned, and every character and sub-plot has its purpose. I particularly enjoyed getting a deeper insight into our more newly introduced characters Zaiana, Kyleer, Tarly and Nerida. I look forward to what comes next for them, amongst our familiar characters Nik, Tauria, Jakon and Marlowe.
It's difficult to give a more in-depth review without giving too much away on the journey that these characters find themselves on. But know that every page, every aspect is worth it. Characters I've previously found myself with little interest in have slowly become a favourite. And something C. Peñaranda writes beautifully is the complexity surrounding our villains of the story. With the reunion of the spirits Marvellas and Dakodas, and the dark fae High Lord Mordecai on their side, the opposing side is a greater threat than ever. And yet I find myself drawn to these characters whenever they grace the page. Desperate to know of their origins, of what they hope to achieve. I look forward to what comes next for all of these characters.
In summary of a fairly vague and yet what I hope to be a somewhat informative review, A Sword from the Embers has already made it's way into my top reads of 2023. The plot, the foreshadowing, the characters and the writing... wow. Just wow. It's difficult to articulate my thoughts into the correct words. I've enjoyed every aspect of this journey and found myself having to force myself into slowing down to truly take it all in. I'm well and truly blown away, and I'm really grateful to have been provided and eARC copy prior to release day. All ratings and reviews are entirely honest, and I cannot wait for the next addition to this series.
trigger warnings: depressive thoughts, suicide ideation, torture, PTSD, heavy grief/loss, (not core themes but mentions/depictions of) graphic fantasy violence, adult language and multiple explicit sexual scenes. (more prominent themes)
It feels like a betrayal to star this book so low when I still love the characters so much but I feel like they’ve been let down by the story and so have I as a reader. I loved the 3rd book so much and I had been waiting impatiently for the 5th one to come out to continue on the story from Faythe’s pov and instead I’ve just been left truly disappointed.
It dragged so much, there was a lot of repetition, I think particularly on Faythe’s and Reylan’s scenes and I was so excited to see them together again after the ending of the 3rd book, but just as it was looking like we would finally get that, everything went to crap. Whilst I say this, I am a big sucker for plots where the characters want to be together but have to hide their relationships whilst people and situations pull them apart. However it gets to a point where the readers have to get some sort of satisfaction from the characters’ annoying situation and that did not happen in this book. Though for a little bit at the end, when they dance with each other (that scene in my opinion is just chef’s kiss, loved it), it quickly gets derailed.
There seem to be 100 mini subplots and it’s so hard to keep up with everything, and nothing ever really gets answered. I think this author loves the mystery and I do too when it’s not overused, but when there are so many conflicts/subplots and more keep appearing, some definitely need to be resolved, or at least discovered, by the end of the book and that certainly didn’t happen here. It’s a whole lotta book and not a lot of moving forward, I don’t think this book furthered the plot at all apart from seeing Faythe’s powers (which only really happened at the end), and it didn’t need to be anywhere this long.
Surprisingly, I actually really liked the addition of Tarly’s pov, I got to like him in book 4 but it was really in this one that I loved him, but there were just two many povs. Having a chapter between Faythe after something important happened or even two short chapters would have been fine, but there were so many in between that by the time I got back to Faythe I forgot why I was rushing through the others.
I hate that Agalhor never really spoke to Faythe about Reylan and them being mates, it never seemed to come up which I find really odd seeing as it was an important thing to the council, but more so that there weren’t really any good scenes between them both, specially as I think it would have made his death a lot more impactful to the reader.
It was so unsatisfying and I just kept thinking there’s so much book left, so many more things could happen and nothing really did until the last 80 pages of the book. I found the interaction in the courtyard between them and Marvellas so unrealistic, Dakodas is the master of shadows and you’re telling me that she didn’t have time to seize Kyleer with the amount of time Faythe took to say goodbye? Or what made me even more angry was that Faythe kissed Reylan goodbye and Kyleer took her from him and you’re telling me he couldn’t take him either? Or seeing as Faythe seemed to get his power, why couldn’t she grab Reylan?
And the betraying of everyone was too much, I really disliked it. I was so upset about Izaiah because I loved him a lot, but that was an interesting point that I really didn’t see coming and made for a very impactful, engaging reveal; but to then also have Jakon and Marlowe betray Faythe when they are all supposed to be in this together just seemed a little bit too much. Especially as Jakon and Marlowe are supposed to be part of the 6 words (courage and knowledge) that Faythe will need to win. It just doesn’t seem realistic because it doesn’t align with their characters, specially with them sharing their knowledge of the Phoenix Blood.
When one finishes a book they should have questions, but some from the previous book or some in this book should be answered and all I have after having finished is questions on top of questions. I feel so unsatisfied, and part of me doesn’t even want to read the next book, expecting it to disappoint me again. I don’t want to read another 800 pages only to not have any questions answered, feeling overwhelmed by the 100 subplots and nothing really happening. Also it seems like a very obvious plot for the next book from what little we found out in this book that Marvellas will make Reylan forget everything, and honestly it would very disappointing if the author decided to go this route, particularly because it’s so obvious and cliche.
Last thing I’ll say is that this has been one of my favourite series ever since I first read it, and this last book, the one I was most excited to read, has ruined the series for me. Perhaps I will read the next one, perhaps not, but it’s really sad that I feel anxious about reading it because I’m so scared of being disappointed again. Let’s hope it can go back to the charming, engaging and loveable series it was in the next book!

I experienced a wide range of emotions while reading this, from pure joy and happiness to sadness and devastation, especially during those last few pages. This book took me on such an adventure. Every book in this series takes us further than the last one, something I mentioned in every review I have written for this series.
Faythe is growing so much! She really went through a lot in the last book we saw her in and she is dealing with the trauma for the most of this book too. The author really showed her healing process with care and didn't try to rush it, but also showed progress. She has such a good found family who are her biggest cheerleaders and support system! Speaking of found family, I love this one so much! I just want them all to reunite already and fight together, not apart! She and Reylan had me smiling, screaming and everything in between. I love their relationship and the new dimensions we got to explore in this book. I just love a princess/queen and her general/protector trope!!!! Reylan showed soooo much restraint in this book and I'm still giddy from how protective he was over Faythe all the time, especially after the last book... I also really appreciated how they are taking their time (despite every reason not to). It left me longing for more and it will have a much bigger impact in the future books, since they have unfinished business (if you know you know).
We saw much more of new characters we met in previous books and I was so happy to follow them on their journey. They also struggled a lot, but gave us some much needed answers that fit the bigger picture! Also, the threats from book 1 ending and book 2 beginning (if you know you know hehe) finally come into play! The buildup was long, but it culminated at the perfect time!
Some things that happened also took me by surprise, which was to be expected at this point in the series. I suspected some things, but the author managed to leave me almost gasping for air after some chapters. I am truly in awe of how far ahead she planned everything to fit into the story and how with every book she gives a small clue we only truly figure out in the next installment. The foreshadowing is insane in here! It does get a little frustrating to be fed only bits and pieces of information, but I know it will all be worth it in the end. I have so many theories and this book provided some much needed context for some things, but we are still without concrete answers though.
Also, the betrayals in this book!!! I couldn't believe the things that were happening. The choices she made regarding the character's relationships were shocking, and I didn't see any of them coming! I'm so interested in how she will explore the new dynamics in the future books and we better get some explanation for some of the things at the end! I'm still upset at some things and sad about them. There was so much heartbreak too, but since this is an early review, I won't be mentioning the specifics here, but consider yourself warned.
I wish we saw more of Nik and Tauria though, because they kind of slipped into the background, but I recognize that it's hard to put them in the centre again, when there is already so many characters and they are in a different place on the map. Their part of the story felt a bit detached from the rest and I wasn't sure in the decisions they were making because they sometimes seemed to come out of nowhere. The only other complaint I have is that the ending was a bit overwhelming and too fast at some points, but since this is a big book, it's partly understandable. Things will probably be a lot more clearer in the next book, as we see how everyone deals with the consequences of their actions. Can't believe we have to wait until next year for answers :(
What can you expect from this book: "who hurt you?", only one bed, enemies to ???, a looooot of tension, enemies calling eachother by nicknames ;))))
Thank you to the author for a chance to read and review this early!
