Rada was born in Transylvania, ten miles away from Dracula's Castle. Growing up between communists and vampires taught her that humans are fickle, but one can always rely on dogs and books. After she immigrated to join her husband, she went to medical school, then worked in the ER for years, but she still speaks like Dracula's cousin. Her thrillers feature Dr. Emma Steele, a not-so-young ER doc with a moody teenage daughter and a fondness for wine. If blood, gore and serial killers turn you on, check out OVERDOSE, MERCY, and POISON. If you're into dark medical humor, check her STAY AWAY FROM MY ER. But if you're into dogs, the K-9 Heroes series is for you. To celebrate Gypsy, Rada's beloved German Shepherd, Emma adopted a quirky, bacon-loving K-9 named Guinness who runs her life through Mercy and Poison.
At first I wasn't sure about this book being told from the viewpoint of the various dogs. Especially because of some of the specific details. But, as I got to know the dogs I started to get used to it. Also, the way the author has conversations between handlers and dogs and even dog to dog was odd as well What I did like was learning more about the relationships between handlers and their dogs in the horrible and dangerous living conditions as they hunted down the explosives and the people who set them. I did enjoy it because I love dogs and respect soldiers.
This was an interesting collection of stories that were written in the POV of the K-9's characters. I liked some of the stories better than others, which is why I averaged it to 3 stars. Overall, it was a good series, but unfortunately it's not one that I choose to continue. Just not for me. If you're interested in reading this series, request a sample to see if it's your type of story. Good reading!
This book is definitely not my type… it is actually three books about three different K-9s in the army told in the dogs’ voice. Sounds weird but a good job with personality’s and a view of the life of an Afghanistan k-9 and their lives.
The author masters the concept of having a dog tell it's own story and making it interesting enough that it becomes a page turner deserving the highest rating. The fact that this is a series does not deviate from the author 's origin
Book - 1 In this case the main character is a German Shepherd named Red, to be renamed Guinness later in the story. Guinness was not adopted at the home of Jones and her mother. She was sold to the army where she trained and accomplished detection work search and rescue as well as explosives detection.
The author masters the concept of having a dog tell it's own story and making it interesting enough that it becomes a page turner deserving the highest rating.
Book - 2 In this case the main character is a Labrador named Yellow, to be renamed Butter later in the story. Butter was bought by Brown and handed, as a gift, to his wife Diane when she was only a pup. Brown, a soldier in the army, trains her in explosives detection for the purpose of saving other soldiers lives on the battlefield. During a mission, Butter is shot and the injury results in the loss of one leg that will be replaced with a prosthetic limb thus the term "Bionic" in the title.
The author takes on the very delicate and difficult task of describing, step by painful step, through research, and her main character's special story telling way, the pain, anxieties, depression, acceptance, rehabilitation, and the way in which a very traumatic experience can be used by the victim to help others surmount a similar trauma . Masterful. 5 Stars.
Book - 3
The third in the series centers on Viper, the Oldest and more experienced of the three, a Belgium breed, at odds with the German Shepherd, Viper nevertheless falls for and misses Guinness after her return home. He has seen more than his fair share in this everlasting war, where he joined as a puppy and is now 7 years old.
Again, the author takes on the difficult subject of the horrors of war, the pain and suffering as well as the despair and the resulting sequels after retirement. With respect, research, and, talent, another great book is created.
With examples like Francis the talking mule, Mister Ed, the horse and more recently sow dogs, the author has no problem in carving her own place amongst the classics.
This series is precious, NAY, exquisite reading . . . .
Do you often wonder what animals are thinking? Ms. Rada Jones knows dogs, obviously. It is entirely possible that she can understand dog-speak and their very thought processes. It certainly seems so at times. She has a really great sense of humor and a profound, intuitive sense of human and canine behavior. She does occasionally, push the boundaries of plausibility, but luckily that doesn't happen often. This saga continues with at least one other set of three companion books that I sincerely look forward to reading. Additionally, I will read other books and media from this author.
Wow, when I read the description I wasn't sure how I would like this book. I'm glad I took the time to read it. This is such a great book that not only tells the story of the dogs training but also their time doing their jobs while at war but also what happens to them when they are retired. These stories are both beautiful and sad at the same time. I look forward to reading more in the series from this author. I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion.
Three first dog stories right from the dog’s view.
These stories are from the mouths of three beloved dogs that are trained for war. Their humans and families are talked about from the dog’s view. The love and loyalty of family and trainers. The companionship of the dogs that are brought to war and the hazards they go through. What happens when they can no longer fight the enemy.
This is an interesting series about army K-9's deployed to Afghanistan with their handelers.
Each novel in this series is narrated the dog in the K-9 unit. The first to tell his is the German Sheppard and each dog in the series has characteristics common to the breed or breeds he or she is. Each dog also has his own personality which reflects his early life and training, but each dog in all the stotries is a hero.
I really like K9 books, close friends have a Malinois K9. I usually don’t read animal fiction books because the main animal usually dies. 4 stars because it tells the stories from the K9’s POV, with info on how soldier K9 handlers interact with their dogs and the bond they develop. But I probably won’t read anymore as some of the dogs and handlers do die, as in real life. It seems like a good series just not one I’ll enjoy.
Never read a story from a differs t view point. Didn't expect to just love it. The dogs are so real and crying over them just as real as being happy with them. You are an exceptional writer to be able to do such a good job of reading the dogs and not just making them human but in many ways better. There feelings are so real and unfiltered. Thank you my favorite authors don't write fast enough.
I was perusing Amazon and found these books. The point of view in the stories is the dogs. Interesting. Well written. Lots of twists and turns. The dog’s perspective makes these books unique. Could not put it down
