The Best Bad Things: A Point Companion Novel

Rate this book
Vesper Bell is a good girl. At least, that’s what everyone keeps telling her.
She was the perfect daughter. A straight-A student. The very best friend. And an adoring potential girlfriend.
However, when her life took an unexpected detour into darkness, suffering, and betrayal, Vesper realized being good hadn’t gotten her anywhere. An enthralled audience watched her dramatic fall from grace and clearly wanted her to crash and burn. Those she once trusted the most made it no secret that they wanted her to lose everything…and she did.
But all those years of being such a goodie-two-shoes built Vesper some powerful cosmic karma. On her birthday, she begged for a second chance, an opportunity to right all the wrongs and undo all the bad things she was forced to endure. She made a wish, not knowing that sometimes they come true.
Now, right before her fall, she’s back at the beginning, and she has no plans to be a good girl anymore.
Lucky for her, she has the perfect person to teach her how to embrace her rebellious and daring side: a boy with candy-colored hair and eyes as dark as the night sky. They were born on the same day, but that is about all the two of them have in common.
Everything about him screams that he is a very bad boy, but Vesper sees the good in him.
He doesn’t seem to care if she’s perfect or pitiful. He keeps stepping in to save her and always makes her feel safe even when everything else feels uncertain. He feels real and honest when the rest of her life seems to be built on lies on top of more lies.
One thing Vesper knows to be absolutely true: the surprisingly sweet delinquent is the very best bad thing to ever happen to her.

The Best Bad Things is a standalone contemporary romance by Jay Crownover. It is told from the heroine’s POV with a happy ending.
You can also expect:
✔️new adult angst
✔️time travel
✔️bad boy-good girl

Jay Crownover never disappoints. I love her stories because they're always, ALWAYS so touching. In the case of THE EST BAD THINGS, Jay writes a forward letting readers know this story is a bit different but that we’d be able to find her tells. Which I did. This is 100% Jay and I loved every second of it.

I was instantly hooked by the story’s prologue. I enjoyed going back to The Point and reveled in the mystery that provided an exciting layer of entertainment on top of the character development and romance between Vesper and Oscar. For some reason this story gave me son Goldilocks (another Jay standalone) vibes.

Jay Crownover described this as a weird ass book, well I loved this weird ass book, a bit of time travel/reincarnation but a solid romance. The real theme though is true love will always find you!

I am not even sure where to begin with this review. I have taken some time to try and put my thoughts into words. I really want to praise this book and encourage people to read it but yet not give a thing away about it, so my suggestion would be to pick this book up and go in blind, the writing is absolutely fabulous.
I am a huge fan of this author and while this is a bit different than what she normally writes, it’s really not.
She writes characters that are full of depth, and flaws and have all these different facets that just suck you in and you can’t turn the pages is fast enough.
This was a five star read for me.

This one was interesting. I'm glad that I read the note the author had at the start, I expected something different and that was what I got. It was like reading 2-3 different books at one and I feel like this one will read different a 2nd or 3rd time, once you really know what went on.

I really liked Vesper form the start, hated how things started for her, loved the second chance she got, was a bit stunned towards the end...scratching my head with what really went on. I found it interesting how Vesper brought all those people together and the different roles that they played, how some aspects of her life were the same. Mostly I'm glad that Vesper is good now and able to live her life happy and healthy.

3,5-3,75*

It started very interesting.
After 25% I was hooked, curious and giddy.
After 50% I thought, I couldn't put this one away.
After 75% I reached the peak, frantic to know, how this one will end...
After 90% I wished I had stopped reading earlier....
After 100% I changed the formerly 5* star read to a 3,5*.....

I have always loved Jay books so hoping I will love this one. She has warned us that it's not her usual writing and considers it weird.

Wow it definitely is weird but I love how its in Point again. Omg what a twist towards the end. I love how she tied it all together.

Jay can write her butt off and still truly wonder of the reader will love it. I definitely did love these two especially Oscar. Definitely involves a lot of twist and turns. Plus you wondering what part is real.

Yes Yes Yes Yes... YES! A solid 4.5 star read.

I'm going to tell you absolutely nothing about what this book is about. I'm also going to tell you nothing about Vesper and Oscar. Hell no, I'm giving you no spoilers what so ever!

What I will tell you is I read this completely in 1 sitting over an afternoon and early evening. I'll tell you I put this down only for toilet breaks (TMI?) and making dinner for the family (But did set multiple timers so I could read it in between and not burn dinner). I'll tell you I've not read another book like it ever! And I've read a lot of books. I'll tell you its different, unique and something I truly enjoyed. I'd say this is a little mystery, a little New adult, maybe even some general fiction too. But it is perfectly written and Jay has done an awesome job. I've not read this type of genre for over a year nearly two, but this really was something else.

It's a kindle unlimited read, so free if you subscribe to their service but worth paying out for too. Solid 4.5 stars why not 5? I didn't want it to end and I'm selfish like that!

Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

Ooo! I loved what Jay Crownover did here. The Best Bad Thing was her compelling writing and characters but with an unexpected twist. I tried to guess what would be so different in this surprise book before starting, but I was wrong. There are a couple of other authors’ books that I could maybe compare it to, but no way am I telling you whose or which ones. I’m not giving anything away. I LOVED going in blind and trying to figure out what was happening.

There were a few things that made this book such a good, entertaining surprise. First, was the way the story was set up. There was so much going on and a lot I didn’t see coming. Second, the characters were fantastic. We got one main POV to set the tone and Vesper was very persuasive. Everything she did or said made me even more curious about everything that had happened. I loved everyone she interacted with. All of the characters were vibrant in different ways. My favorite, of course, was Oscar. Third, well can I just say everything else? I just wasn’t expecting this story to be what it was. Honestly, it was right up my alley. I wouldn’t be mad if Crownover wrote a similar type of book in the future.

I should probably mention that this book is related to Crownover’s Welcome to the Point series. I haven’t read that one (yet), and I didn’t feel like I was missing out. In fact, it made me want to read that series even more! The Best Bad Thing was a big win in my book. LOVED IT!

First off, big round of applause for this cover. It’s so beautiful, I just can’t stop looking at it. It catches my eye for sure. But anyways. I loved this book. I actually really recommend going in blind, but as far as my review, I’ll try not to spoil anything. At times, I was more confused than Vesper. But for the most part, I liked following her journey and seeing how different choices could have an effect on everything around you. And the way she fell in love with Oscar, and how real he was, and how he treated her, felt like they were soulmates. I also really liked how she took any opportunity given to better appreciate her life and the people in it. I know I’d love to go back with a fresh perspective and a bit more confidence than I used to have. This story ended up being a little funky and fun, and I was here for all of it!

The Best Bad Things is definitely an interesting and intriguing book. I wouldn't call it weird like Jay says, but it is different and unique. There were a lot of twists and turns throughout the book that kept me on my toes. I don't want to go too in-depth, I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll keep it vague. I liked both Vesper and Oscar. They are both interesting characters with a lot of depth. I really liked their relationship, they make a cute couple. Being in Vesper's head throughout the book was a bit of a roller coaster. She experiences a lot in this book, and I feel like she grows as a person from all of it. Even though this book is different from Jay's other books, there are still so many aspects that you can tell are Jay's writing, and I really enjoyed that. I still always felt like I was reading one of her books. I enjoyed this book and its uniqueness!

A little off the usual from Jay Crownover but a Whole Lot of AWESOME

This is not a typical Jay Crownover book. Bit in typical Jay Crownover fashion, the story is told so well that you can see yourself there and feel the raw emotion from the characters. If you are an avid reader of Ms. Crownover's books, you will quickly realize you are traveling back to a similar fictional universe.
To say this book has twists and turns is an epic understatement.
Buckle up before you read this one because you are in for a treat and a wild ride.

**ARC received in exchange for an honest review**

The Best Bad Things by Jay Crownover was something very different than she usually writes. I was 100% not expecting the plot twist that happened in the book 🤣

I freaking adore Vesper and Oscar, and am SO glad these authors came alive in Crownover’s mind. Also, to be back in the Point, even just vaguely, was soooooo amazing!

It’s best to go into this book blind, so I won’t give away any details. Just read the book 😊

I loved the hell out of this. What a weird freaking concept that was executed beautifully with 200 something pages. I haven’t read Jay Crownover in a minute but she used to be one of my all time favorites, and still apparently her writing sticks to it.

Plot twisty, emotional and steamy as hell.

The Best Bad Things is one incredible book. I'm not even quite sure how to review this gem without giving too much away. It's the latest from Jay Crownover, who is as unique as this storyline, and what she has created has genuinely blown me away. We've all had those thoughts, 'if I could just go back, I'd do it differently' from time to time. Wishing we could change the course of one moment and fix what we may have done wrong and right our regret. Well, with The Best Bad Things she does just that as Vesper Bell finds herself living more than one version of her current life and not really knowing what may be real and what is simply wishful thinking. The book follows Vesper as she becomes remorseful that she didn't do enough to keep her father safe and live the life she should have after she's seemingly catapulted through time on her birthday. Accent on the word seemingly.

We're taken on quite the journey with Vesper as our guide, getting to see her try and change the course of events and fall inexplicably in love again and again with the seemingly stoic Oscar Osborn. Funny that his birthday is the same as Vesper's and how no matter what time she may be experiencing in her confused mind, he is forever there for her. Their time together is full of questions for both of them and although I thoroughly enjoyed being on this wild ride, dubious feelings plagued me from time to time not quite sure as to what was really happening here.

However, I'm very happy to report that everything is explained as to the whys, hows and how comes that were forever boggling my own mind with a brilliant last 30% or so of this well-written book. I couldn't help but gasp a bit as explanations unfold and the realization of just how clever a story this was. I promise you will too!

The Best Bad Things is a special kind of reading experience and I'm very glad Crownover stepped out of her usual and wrote this extraordinary story. In the end, it's a tale about the power of love and how even in the darkest recesses of our brains, that emotion always makes itself known when we need it most. Forever showing us the way when we get a bit lost.

I have been purposely vague in this review because this is a book you need to experience for yourself. It's well worth your while and I very happy to give The Best Bad Things a huge 5+ stars!

First off, I won't be able to go into too much plot detail because that's part of the fun of this mind bending story.  I can't even start this review like I want to because I would totally spoil it for the next readers.

Vesper is the sole narrator of this story and when the story starts, she is in a rundown hotel in The Point after a serious fall from the opposite end of town known as The Hill. She experiences a tragedy and her life implodes, sending her back in time to when she lived in that wealthy part of town.

Having a second chance means being able to right all the wrongs that were done to the people Vesper loves, and also to herself. There are plenty of juicy villains in this story -- a nasty stepsister, a brutal ex boyfriend, a wicked almost-stepmother and then there's Oscar, the one guy who has been with her from the start of this adventure.

I adored Vesper and Oscar both. Although Vesper is a very unreliable narrator,  she's just so strong and I felt her journey every step of the way.  Oscar is the best of the kind of man Jay Crownover writes and why I adore her stories -- he has a good sense of right and wrong, can walk and talk perfect bad boy, and chooses to express himself with his tattoos and colored hair. There was something about Oscar that I connected with and I just loved him and Vesper together.

I didn't see that ending coming either, and I really liked that about the story.

Overall, I thought this book merged romance, mystery and time travel elements very well into a more unique contemporary romance reading experience and returning to The Point for this was absolutely wonderful as the Point series is one of my favorites from this author.

If you are looking for a different sort of romance with a bit of a mystery, time travel and an awesome bad boy hero, you might like The Best Bad Things.  .

Out there but is a Crownover classic!

First things first:
*I wouldn’t recommend this being your first Crownover book
*Dont judge all of Crownover’s other books by this one

In all of her newsletters, Crownover warned us that this book was different from the rest, but what very tight lipped about the actual story.
I’ll read anything that Crownover puts out, but due to her warnings, my expectations were fairly low. I was so very wrong to doubt her and her talent.

While I had no idea what to expect, after reading just the prologue I was sucked in, I was invested, I needed to know what the hell this book was going to be. Overall, I was incredibly surprised! Not only by how much I enjoyed reading it, but that Crownover was capable of the depth and complexity that this book contained.

While this is definitely the most out there Crownover book, it is also just as great as the rest! The Best Bad Things is filled with mystery, confusion, and romance between two people from opposite sides of the tracks. Vesper Bell is a badass, inspiring young woman who can’t help but fall for the revenge seeking man from the Point, Oscar Osborne.

While both Vesper and Oscar have their own separate journeys, they repeatedly find that their lives are intertwined in a way that they don’t understand. Rather then waste precious time trying to figure it out, they decide to accept one another and help each other however they can.

I’m a sucker for Crownover’s Point books, so The Best Bad Things was a very welcome (if out there) surprise! Crownover has revisited the Point in the past, but never like this. This go around is one of my favorite Point experiences yet!

What an unexpected romance story! Jay Crownover warns us from the start that this book is twisted and different and it truly is!

Vesper was a rich girl that had everything; she was a good girl, she had a handsome boyfriend and an amazing best friend… until everything turned upside down and she crashed and burned in the worst part of the city, the Point.

One wish for a second chance on her birthday brings her back to the past and now she has to face everyone that turned against her with the help of the bad boy, Oscar.

Despite the fact that there is time travel the story is really straightforward. It has romance and suspense as also mystery. Everything moves with a great pace although you wonder what it is behind all this and what it is going to happen. To tell you the truth, nothing surprised me until the end that was really funky and fun!

I also have to say about the note of the author of how much she loved going back to the wicked city of the Point although the books set there did not sell as much. If you are not familiar, the Point is a part of the city where all bad things happen; there is crime, poverty and death. I don’t know why these books did not sell but these are some of my favorites by this author. There is something admirable for people that struggle but in the end survive and find love in the darkness.

I always like Jay’s books and though this is a little weird, it has an exciting storyline and amazing character development!

Talk about a mind f***! In the best way, that is. Vesper and Oscar barely survive an accident and have to figure out what’s true, what’s salvageable, what’s not, and how to cope with everything. And with every chapter, more pieces fall into place until the puzzle is bumped just enough to make you wonder about the placement. This was a nonstop ride through memories, fallacies, good, bad, ugly, and what could or couldn’t be true for anyone or everyone. And I loved every last second of it.

I adored that we revisited the Point because Jay has given us some of the best stories ever from this place. We see a few familiar faces along Oscar and Vesper’s ride through oddsville, and those faces become almost a talisman to focus on in order to keep spinning without losing track of what’s happening. Again, I mean it in the best way. No lie. This story is so utterly well written that piecing it together each different way it appeared was some of the best fun I’ve had with a book this year. And I’d totally be here for it if she gave another K-Drama-esque read to us in the future because the questions and answers and distortions are all so masterfully meshed together that I both needed and dreaded the final outcome. Because then I’d have all the answers but also be done with this book. So clear your schedule and dive into Vesper and Oscar and all that they bring to the pages of this journey toward truth. You won’t regret it.
