Raising Cats Naturally: How to care for your cat the way nature intended

Rate this book
It's about time we had a book like this. Michelle Bernard has a rare gift for putting in plain words extraordinarily effective and levelheaded ways to properly care for cats. Steering clear of faddish, dangerous trends-and dissecting the oodles of misinformation that has regrettably become the norm in mainstream advice on animal nutrition-she shines most conspicuously on the issue of a proper feline diet. By giving the reader a common-sense, straightforward strategy for preparing a diet that is based solely on the nutritional requirements of true carnivores, her book is a must-have for anyone committed to building and maintaining glowing good health for cats. Bernard's work on all aspects of caring naturally for cats is based on years of meticulous research and hands-on experience, yet she translates her knowledge into simple, common sense guidelines that anyone can understand and put to use. Her eloquent explanation of homeopathy demystifies this splendid, ancient healing art that is so marvelously suited to cats, giving the reader a valuable awareness about how to build and nurture a cat's health from the inside out. This alone is a refreshing and most welcome approach given the routine over-medication and over-vaccination of cats. If you love your cat, read this book. All of it.

I stumbled upon this book, and since one of my cats was really sick and the vet had nothing else to do, I gave it a shot.

I first read all I could find about the book, checked out the author's website, and thought carefully about it, now I'm glad I bought it.

The text is very well structured, there is a lot of useful and interesting info about everything related to cat feeding:
behaviour, products, prices... and she thoroughly explains the reasoning behind every idea she came up with, while stating that there's a lot more research to do, and inviting the reader to get further involved in the process, this book is just a start. And there's a lot more wishful thinking and owner pleasing involved in canned cat food than one would expect! :s

To be honest, what I found in the book was more than enough, I just had to observe at the beginning to find out how much meat they needed, they gained weight pretty fast, lol.
Knowing about your cat's health helps a lot too, my cat needs a bit more salmon oil than she suggests.

The food processing was incredibly well explained; I even managed to find a proper mincer here in Europe since the one she recommends was hard to find or not avalaible (can't remember).
There is some useful advice on how to start feeding them this new diet, since some cats will need some adjusting.

The vet stopped coming home on a monthly basis, my cat got well and looked normal, and the other cat's fur (yep, the healthy one) looked amazing! I'd say this is one of the most useful books I've ever had.
