USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author Janie Crouch writes what she loves to read: passionate romantic suspense.
After a lifetime on the East Coast—and a six-year stint in Germany due to her husband's job as support for the U.S. Military—Janie has settled into her dream home in Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. She loves engaging in all sorts of adventures (triathlons! 200-mile relay races! mountain treks!), traveling, and surviving life with four kids.
Heroes exist. Let a Janie Crouch book prove it to you.
Wow! In this the 8th book of the Linear Tactical series, Janie has written an incredible book (again!). Boy Riley (Phoenix) and Girl Riley (Wildfire) are such an awesome H/h.
Phoenix, an extreme sports sensation and undercover operator for Linear Tactical, and Riley, a nurse, fell in love at a WAR competition set up by the LT guys where Phoenix was competing. They've been a very serious item for three years, but then Riley gets some news that will forever change her life. In dealing with it, she pushes Phoenix away to the point of breaking up with him. Phoenix returns to Oak Creek determined to find out what Riley is hiding from him. His excuse for being there? To compete in WAR.
This book is slightly different than the other Linear Tactical books by focusing a lot on Phoenix and Riley's relationship, but has a nice amount of suspense and action to go with it. It's just an awesome book! This book gave me a definite urge to go back and reread the entire series again. It can definitely be a standalone, but the characters from the previous books are definitely included in this one. Love it!
Disclosure: I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of the more emotion driven books in this series. Some heavy issues and some very real problems that a lot of us must face. I knew at the end of the last book that nurse Girl Riley (Wildfire) had some sort of a medical issue. It has caused her to breakup with extreme sports competitor Boy Riley (Phoenix). Like the true competitor he is, Phoenix is not taking this announcement and fading into the sunset. No, he gets right in Wildfire's face, making her see that he isn't going anywhere.
Phoenix is the very best and defeat is not a word in his vocabulary. After Girl Riley pronounces that they are through, he drops everything and heads to Oak Creek, Wyoming to compete in a race he has already won once. Been there, done that, have the 1st Place Trophy to prove it, no need for a redo. But, Girl Riley is the medical staff for the six day race and Phoenix needs answers that Girl Riley isn't giving him.
In addition to the distraction with Girl Riley, Phoenix has to focus on actually competing in one of the most difficult, challenging and intense competitions. There is little room for error and Phoenix finds that there may be someone out to do more than sabotage his plan for a repeat victory.
This eighth book in the series, was a little different in that 80% of the book was about the relationship between Riley/Boy Riley Harrison, and Riley/Wildfire/Girl Riley Wilde. He is an adventure seeking phenomena , known as Phoenix and she’s a nurse in Linear Tactical’s town. They’ve been an item for three years, until she receives news that will change her life forever. Making her break up with Riley. We get to experience the feelings these are going through, as well as get the opportunity to visit with the Linear Tactical crew and their families. It isn’t until the last 20% of the book that the usual nail biting scenes occur. Will they survive the danger ? Will Wildfire take a chance on life and Riley? Another well written story with an engaging plot and complex characters. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
If you're expecting a whole lot of action like we got in the previous books this one is a bit different. Most of the book is about Boy and Girl Riley's relationship. It shows us how they came to be together and how they are trying to overcome the obstacle that girl Riley put in their path. I loved Boy Riley and the way he just wouldn't let her go. But this being Linear Tactical series we get a bit of drama and action at the end of the book that just completes this story.
This book was full of feelings and it had me hooked from first word. I'm a HUGE fan and the next book can't come fast enough ❤️

Another fantastic book by Janie Crouch!! Phoenix is book 8 in the Linear Tactical series and is still going strong. We hear about Boy Riley (Phoenix) and Girl Riley (Wildfire) quite a bit in the previous books and to finally get their story was awesome!! I was really curious about this book because the majority of the main characters in the Linear Tactical series have military or law enforcement backgrounds. Girl Riley is a nurse who periodically assists in some of the Linear Tactical events and Boy Riley is a world renowned adventure and extreme sports athlete, but in this book we learn he does so much more.
These two have been an item for three years, but out of the blue Wildfire tells Phoenix that they were over. Since he is out of the country, he had no way of talking to Riley to figure out what had changed. Even though Phoenix had other commitments, he was coming home to get some answers and his girl back.
A lot happens to both Phoenix and Wildfire, but what is constant is their connection and the incredible love they feel for each other. This latest book is quite different from the others, but still has the drama, danger, angst and a whole lot of emotions. A definite 5-star read!!
Once again, Janie Crouch has written another outstanding installment in the Linear Tactical series. I am not one for multiple books in a long series as I tend to only like some of the books and find the rest of the series just drags on. This is not the case here. Crouch has had me hooked from book one and I just can’t get enough of the smoking hot Linear Tactical guys.
Book eight in the series, Phoenix, is a little bit different from the first seven books and focuses primarily on Boy Riley and Girl Riley who already have an established relationship and have been dating for the past three years. Boy Riley Harrison is a well known celebrity adventurer and sports sensation. Girl Riley Wilde is a nurse in Oak Creek, Wyoming and friends with many of the guys on the Linear Tactical team and their wives/girlfriends. When Girl Riley breaks up with Boy Riley unexpectedly, Boy Riley does everything in his power to come home to show the only woman he has ever loved that they are right for each other. But Girl Riley is holding on to a secret, one that will take a huge toll on their relationship. Can their love beat all of the odds against them?
I really love how Crouch can easily switch up her books so easily to one that focuses mainly on the relationship between boy and girl Riley. I am so used to all the action and suspense right from the get-go, but it is refreshing to see a more character driven story as well. Don’t get me wrong there is still some action and suspense in the mix with most taking part towards the ending. As always, it is quite intense and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I really loved boy Riley and girl Riley in this story and I truly get it. I understand how hard of a decision girl Riley had to make and why she felt it was necessary to break up with boy Riley, the only man she has ever loved. I also love how hard boy Riley fought for his girl and his determination in winning her back never letting her forget how much he loves her and how good they are together as a couple. This really was a great love story between two characters who have so much love and respect for one another. At the heart of this story is a great love story and I wanted their happy ending to happen quickly!
I am so glad this series is NOT ending and hopefully won't be for a very very long time. I just can’t get enough of these Linear Tactical guys and I have made every single one of them my book boyfriends! I am not greedy! Okay maybe I am and I am NOT sharing! Up next is Baby’s story and I, for one, just cannot wait!
If you love romantic suspense books with action as hot as love stories then you will never go wrong with a Janie Crouch book. If you have not started this series yet, what are you waiting for? Geez! Go Go Go!
PHOENIX is one of my favorites in Ms. Crouch's Linear Tactical series!
While the LT books are all romantic suspense, this one is lighter on the suspense (more of a subplot) and focuses on the romance between two unique, special characters. There are touches of humor with Girl Riley and Boy Riley, there's certainly some action as the main part of the plot revolves around an annual survival competition. But there is a touching, emotional thread to it, as well, as the heroine has recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. So as not to be a burden to her X-factor, all-action, world-traveling media sensation boyfriend, Girl Riley breaks off their relationship. This is about getting down to what's really important in a relationship, discovering the best parts of being human and loving someone, and learning to trust when your world is falling apart.
And, of course, you get to revisit some favorite LT heroes/heroines and meet some future heroes and heroines.
Omg what another stunner from a unicorn author. Just when you thought she couldn't fit any more action or drama into a book she proves you wrong. If you're anything like me you'll be sitting there biting your nails from cover to cover, wishing that your coffee would turn into wine. Wow. So much happens in this book your head will be spinning trying to keep up. I also love how the author uses everyday realities/outcomes and sprinkles them amongst the non stop action. Definitely a must read no matter what your preference is!!
Wow! this book deserves more stars..I have been blindsided, I didn't think that Janie could write a book that i would love more than Angel, which was my all-time favorite book, until today..Phoenix is simply AMAZING! There is so much happening with boy Riley (Phoenix) and girl Riley (Wildfire ) but one thing is very clear they are totally made for each other..Phoenix has made me want to go and re-read ALL the Linear Tactical books again, it made me cry (again ) laugh out loud, pace, mutter bad words, ( my hubby thinks I'm a nutcase 😂 ) and just when you think the HEA is happening Janie Crouch throws a twist in to the mix! This book is so well written it just flows from one chapter to the next. I have absolutely no idea how Janie is going to top this one..I can't wait for the next book in the LT series BABY!
Overall Amanda Rating: A I loved this story! I didn’t sleep until I finished this book. I read it from cover to cover hardly coming up for air. Let’s go! The names are too confusing. So I am going to use their nicknames. The other this is a hot mess that shouldn’t have happened. Sorry not sorry. Wildfire- I loved this girl. I hated that she was punishing herself for things beyond her control but that seems to be the way we strong women handle things. We push people we care about away to do it alone when we don’t have to. Her learning to let others in was beautiful. A great character arc. Phoenix- overall this guy was fantastic. He listened when told he had to let her realize she needed him. He loves her the way that only female authors can write about. Pure fiction. This story was beautiful.
I did not love the extra epilogue. It gave away stuff that I wanted to read about in books to come. And also introduced characters I have never met.
Boy Riley also known as Phoenix is an Adrenaline junky. Him and girl Riley have loved each other forever. Thing is with his x-games like career, his secret job with Linear, and his travel it is best suited for a long distance, when in town kind of thing. Thing is now boy Riley is thinking he want more and will have to prove to girl Riley that he wouldn't be giving up his life to be with her and vice versa.
Just as she starts to imagine more strange things begin to happen to boy Riley and his health, his life are in jeopordy forcing her to facce a future without him at all. Also his sercet job will come to risk not only his life but hers.
PHOENIX is the eighth book in Crouch’s Linear Tactical Series and it is a fabulous story! Yet again, the author has surpassed my expectations and created a heart-wrenching, gut-twisting, emotional bomb that is off-the-charts amazing. This book is a bit different than the other books in the series in that it partly stems from the author’s adventurous lifestyle and real-life experiences. It is amazing!
This story is centered on Riley Harrison (Phoenix) and Riley Wilde, or both better known as Boy Riley and Girl Riley to their friends. He is an extreme sports star and adrenaline junky who loves travel and adventure and she is a nurse who loves life and sharing in his adventures when time allows.
Boy Riley is an undercover operative for Linear Tactical and utilizes his adventures and fame to his advantage to get into situations and locations no one else can under the radar. When an off-the-books request from the team derails his current plans he has no idea of the danger he will bring home to Oak Creek. And unfortunately, there is more than one evil hiding in the shadows that will stop at nothing to ensure Riley pays the ultimate price. When a surprising turn of events threatens the love of his life the Phoenix will rise again!
Girl Riley is keeping a secret that will irrevocably change her life in unforeseen ways and she is desperate to keep it to herself. She is determined to keep the news from Boy Riley as long as possible so she pushes him away, trying to force him to go on with his life and keep living his dream. She thinks she knows Riley but seriously underestimates the lengths he will go to find answers and prove that they are meant to be. The more she pushes, the more he digs in; it is a heartbreaking battle of wills and an emotional waterfall to navigate for them both. The challenges of their surroundings and the threat of danger add an enticing twist to the mix.
This book is a wonderfully written story of change, acceptance, friendship, family, and the enduring love of two souls meant to be. There is plenty of excitement, suspense, action, danger, laughter, sadness, and smoking hot romance that will sizzle off the pages. Phoenix is a well-written, engrossing story that will hold you in its grasp until the very last page. Definitely my new favorite of the series!
Another good read from Janie Crouch. I loved the interaction between the two main characters. The characters from the previous books in the series, are in this book as well, so it was like meeting old friends. I really enjoyed this story and looked forward to the next.
An Entertaining, emotionally charged adventure story, with extreme sports, a romance that sweeps you off your feet, and a touch of suspense that makes your heart race. Mainstream quality writing, in smoothly flowing story that made me smile and sigh.
Phoenix is book 8 in the Linear Tactical series by Janie Crouch. This is Boy Riley Harrison (Phoenix) and Girl Riley Wilde (Wildfire)'s story. It was a bit different than previous books but still a good read. You still get the action, drama, angst, total feels, suspense , intensity and romance but at the same time, the story is featured around Boy Riley and Girl Riley and their relationship. Things happen with their relationship , and Boy Riley does 6 day endurance race. Trust me, tons of action takes place. Keep tissues on hand and prepare to be on edge of your seat. Get ready to go the distance. Another sizzling read!
PHOENIX is the eighth instalment in Janie Crouch’s contemporary, adult LINEAR TACTICAL romantic suspense series focusing on a group of former Special Forces soldiers who own and operate Linear Tactical, an Oak Creek, Wyoming business specializing in survival skills, security and protection. This is extreme sports athlete and Linear Tactical undercover operative Riley ‘Phoenix’ Harrison, and nurse Riley ‘Wildfire’ Wilde’s story line. PHOENIX can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary. And YES, both of the characters’ names are Riley, so to avoid further confusion, like the characters in the book, our heroine will be called ‘girl Riley’, and our hero ‘boy Riley’.
Told from dual third person perspectives ( Riley and Riley) PHOENIX follows extreme sports athlete and Linear Tactical undercover operative Riley ‘Phoenix’ Harrison, several days after a successful rescue by the team in the Egypt. With the Linear Tactical extreme WAR games about to commence boy Riley is dumbfounded when the woman he has loved for close to 3 years breaks it off without a reason or why but boy Riley isn’t willing to give up without a fight, and with girl Riley’s job as part of the medical personnel team, boy Riley is determined to find out the truth, and prove he is worthy of her love. Meanwhile, girl Riley struggles with some personal news of her own and refuses to allow boy Riley to suffer along side. Hoping to push boy Riley out of her life, girl Riley keeps secret the truth until events at the WAR games prove that someone is out to destroy his life. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Phoenix and Wildfire, and the potential fall-out as boy-Riley becomes the target in a dangerous game of betrayal and revenge.
Riley Wilde does not want to complicate Phoenix’s life any more than it already has, and by walking away, she believes, is the better alternative than path on which she is currently headed. Keeping her secret means hurting Phoenix further, especially when someone is determined to take down our story line hero. Riley ‘Phoenix’ Harrison fell in love with Wildfire within days of their first meeting, and currently struggles with girl Riley’s rejection especially in light of their love for one another.
The relationship between the two Riley’s is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people whose lives are spiralling out of control. From girl Riley’s secrets, to the person attempting to destroy their lives, our couple are in for an uphill battle, a battle that will become more dangerous when Phoenix’s past demands vengeance and payment. The $ex scenes are hard and fast.
There is a large ensemble cast of energetic secondary and supporting characters including several members of the Linear Tactical team including Zac & Annie (Cyclone #1), Gabriel Collingwood (Angel #4) ,Peyton and Cade (Echo #7), Finn’s brother ‘Baby’ Bollinger, Wyatt Highfield, and Gavin Zimmerman; extreme sports athletes Damon Sullivan, Gunnar ‘Iceland’ Jefferson, Bo Gonzales and Amber Lowe; and Egyptian billionaire Sayed El Kadi. Baby Bollinger’s story line is next in BABY.
PHOENIX is a story of family and friendships; secrets and lies; betrayal, revenge, power and control. The premise is captivating and engaging; the romance struggles in the face of secrets and timing; the characters are colorful, charismatic and spirited. PHOENIX is a heart warming and encouraging story of strength and acceptance.
This was such an interesting and unique story! Three quarters of it is told over the course of an extreme sport/stunt race (like Tough Mudder except this fictional race takes place over 5 days instead of 1). I have read hundreds and hundreds of romance novels, many suspense and sports themed, but not one has ever had this kind of setting. It was really cool.
Ms. Crouch did her research! Everything about the race and the descriptions of the extreme sports and stunts Phoenix takes part in were great. I've never done anything like that myself so I don't have anything to compare it too, but I was very enthralled and understood all the things that he was doing.
Ok, so the one thing that bugged me was how the hero and heroine had the same name. I know it was supposed to be cute and all, but I felt like calling them Girl Riley and Boy Riley sounded super childish. I liked his nickname for her, Wildfire, and because his nickname is Phoenix, I will now refer to them as Riley W and Riley P.
Riley W has been an established character from book 1 of this series and it was nice to finally get her story and her happy ending. She's been in a relationship with Riley P since before the series started but since he had always been traveling for work, he hasn't been in any of the books. I really liked both of them and I loved them together.
Her medical diagnosis was tragic and I won't spoil it with what it is. It's established in the very first chapter. Her rejection of him because she doesn't want to be a burden and hold him back made sense. Usually when one character is withholding themselves like this for majority of the book, it bothers me, but in this case, it made sense.
Since we were learning about her diagnosis at the same time as her, experiencing all her insecurities in real time helped the story. I was glad that she wasn't rejecting their love or pretending to cheat or something like that. There was enough to the rest of the story to give some relief from all the angst.
The two different suspense elements were greatly played out. When the first was revealed, I was surprised but it wasn't totally shocking. The second was actually more shocking than the first since it came out of nowhere. I enjoyed how both with handled.
There's two sex scenes. One in the very beginning when he's trying to get her back the wrong way. And one towards the middle after they've gone through a traumatic event. Both scenes are detailed, the second being longer than the first. There's not much language in the book.
I'm definitely excited about Baby's story and glad that the note at the end mentioned the Susan Stoker crossover book titled Storm. It's not listed on Amazon when you click on the Linear Tactical series book order. It comes after Baby's book.
An extreme sports celebrity and a nurse meet during a competitive sports marathon and fall in love...
Boy Riley (Phoenix) and Girl Riley (Wildfire) were two people who are obviously meant to be together. Of course, if these two made things easy, there wouldn’t be a great story to read! Unlike previous Linear Tactical books, the focus in Phoenix was all about their relationship and the suspense was a secondary thread.
I loved it!!
Wildfire had to learn to trust herself before things could really work between her and Phoenix. Phoenix had to believe Wildfire would know he trusted her to watch out for herself as well as know he’d always be there to catch her when she fell. How they get to their destination is what made the story so interesting!
I love high-octane romantic suspense, but I was a happy camper that Janie took this route with Phoenix and Wildfire! All the warm fuzzy feels with hold your breath adventure, can’t get much better than that!
I received an advance reader copy from the author and this is my honest review.
Another fabulous installment of the Linear Tactical Series. When Girl Riley gets some devastating news, she knows she has to end things with Boy Riley. But she should know better because Phoenix is a man that never backs down from a challenge or a great adventure and you better believe that he is going to make sure that Riley never forgets that again.
Crouch delivers an emotional and exciting read. I loved the mixture of intensity, heartache, and hope. Dangerous missions, risky races, and unknown enemies had me on the edge of my seat. Along with all of that action, Crouch gives us a love story full of sacrifice, pain, loyalty, and so much more. I was captivated and unable to put this book down. Each story in this series has been so different and unique to the couple. I can’t wait for more!!
This is the story of Boy Riley and Girl Riley. Having the main couple have the same name made this book unique. Girl Riley (Wildfire) keeps a big secret from Boy Riley (Phoenix). Their relationship is at a crossroad and that causes tension. Phoenix is a world-class extreme sport athlete and Wildfire a nurse. All supreme athletes could benefit from a significant other being a medical professional. There are some hot fast sex scenes between these two. The best part of this book is that the whole Linear Tactical Team (Family) are part of the story. As with other books in this captivating Series, the book overlaps with other books. The suspense factor sneaks up on the reader. The author tackles a serious subject manner I wasn’t expecting, which added to the depth to the plot. There is very intriguing Epilogue. It wet my appetite for future books. I am really looking forward to Baby’s love story.
This story was fantastic, centered around a 6 day endurance race. Boy Riley and Girl Riley and their relationship. I enjoyed the change of pace in this book. Some mystery, some typical linear action with the speed up pace and last-minute take your breath away predicament; and not to mention the romance drama and steam of their beautiful relationship. What a great book! I love how each of Janie's books nor just in this series but in all of them are so different. The only constant is the wonderful dynamics in the relationship she builds as she writes. Truly a great book and fantastic series! This was an ARC and one I'm so happy to give an honest review about.

I took a break on this series a while back, and getting back into it now because I am interested in the spin-off series. The mystery plot was very easily predicted, and the big action plot at the end felt pretty hokey and unbelievable. I'll continue on, but this wasn't my favorite in the series, though this FMC was one of my favorites.
Boy Riley is a puzzle solver, it’s what makes him good at what he does and he is doing everything he can to figure out the puzzle to Girl Riley and what has her so upset. He loves her too much to not figure it out. I had goosebumps when I read this line "You’ll just come with a set of wheels". Reading this book, you feel the love. Linear Tactical guys do not leave a man behind. When girl Riley got into trouble, every single one of them banded together to help their “family”. Linear Tactical at the core is family.
Newly diagnosed with MS, Girl Riley loves Boy Riley too much to condemn him to life with a woman who may someday need diapers or a wheelchair, so she breaks up with him. But Boy Riley refuses to let her be judge, jury, and executioner for their relationship. Do not miss this story!
Oh WOW was a crazy train ride, lots of action. This was an emotional book, love both Riley's, I get were she is coming from but then I wanted to hit her over the head. I'm glad things worked out.
