Baked! is the memoir of a struggling comedian/actor whose successful, albeit illegal, day job of selling pot cookies in early 2000s New York City takes over his life.
It all started when author John Flynn needed to raise $2,000 for a show he co-created at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre called Showgirls! The Best Movie Ever Made! Ever! In one night, he sold enough cookies at the UCB’s Christmas party to cover all the show's expenses. Turns out selling drugs is as easy as selling drugs! For the next three and a half years he became “the cookie guy” to his friends, acquaintances, and growing list of customers.
As word of mouth grew, he met an incredible array of people from every walk of life and economic standing. Doctors, therapists, pole dancers, dog walkers, chefs, accountants, Wall Street brokers, vegans, cast members from Blue Man Group, and chorus boys all like to eat weed!
But while his business was taking off, everything else, from his career to his love life, suffered. Eventually John must choose between the successful business he worked hard to create or a more socially acceptable life.
Also a recipe for how to make pot cookies yourself. It’s full of helpful hints, like which kitchen items to invest in, what to do about the smell, and how to avoid costly mistakes while baking!
Hilarious and heartfelt. This was such a fun read, I consumed the whole thing in a day. John is such a talented and engaging storyteller! No surprise considering his legendary status as an on-stage storyteller.
A must-read for anyone who spent time around the Upright Citizens Brigade (or any improv/sketch community) or anyone who lived in New York and contemplated getting into some mischief for extra cash.
I'm a listener of 2 Old Queens and many other podcasts that John promoted this book on, so I had to order my signed copy to also donate a little money to the Last Prisoner Project. I finished the book so quickly. A great read. Laughter, tears, and hunger for cookies by the end of it. HIGHLY recommend. Get it??? HIGH???
A wonderful and funny story of survival, persistence and reaching for dreams. John Flynn's sense of self and comedy are intertwined in such a way that his voice is easy and naturally funny. He captures the way many people look at societal politeness and self-fulfillment, while telling a story that is uniquely his own. What a pleasurable read this was.
Baked is as delightful as the product described within: a sugary rush of fun with Flynn’s hilarious writing, followed by the lasting euphoria of the many star-studded anecdotes of his entertaining life as an comedian/pot purveyor in NYC. Here’s one weed dealer you’ll never want to leave!
Baked is a wonderfully engaging memoir that will cause you to laugh endlessly with moments of kindness, compassion, and sincere joy. I highly recommend!
I just finished this book and loved it! It's written in a way that makes you feel like you get to know the author. It's really humorous and easy to read; I couldn't put it down. If you have any interest in comedy, improv, musical theatre, or stories about folks trying to "make it" NYC, You will love it too.
