Four Pretty Little Liars still haven’t learned their lesson....

In idyllic Rosewood, Pennsylvania, nothing is quite as it seems....

Fifteen years ago an anonymous tormentor known only as A terrorized Emily Fields, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, and Aria Montgomery—watching their every move, revealing their darkest secrets, and even nearly killing them.

Now A is in jail and the Pretty Little Liars have grown up and moved on. Emily is happily married. Spencer is on partner track at her law firm. Hanna’s family is the envy of the neighborhood. And Aria is a finalist for a coveted art fellowship.

Their lives are perfect. Or so they say.

Turns out, Emily is hiding a big secret from her wife. Spencer has used some dirty tricks to claw her way to the top. Hanna’s family isn’t nearly as perfect as it seems. And Aria will do anything to win that fellowship.

After all, once a liar, always a liar. And guess what? A is still watching....

I want the last 11 hours of my life back! This book was not it and as someone who read every single one of the original PLL books, I’m truly shocked how Sara Shepard could write a book about characters that felt like she didn’t know them at all. The storylines were all really contrived and the A reveal was so underwhelming. Really the only interesting part was the epilogue. Not worth a listen, just let sleeping bitches lie.

Get out your Jungle Red Lipstick. Dust off that black hoodie or red coat. Highlight those Lolita clues, because A is back and killing for secrets.

Clearly I am a glutton for punishment. Over the years I have somehow indulged in every ridiculous Pretty Little Liars book Sara Shepard has released (aside from Alison's Diary and some other Kingdom Hearts bullshit 4.5 book). Yes, I took time out of my days on the earth for all 17 of these pretty badly written novels. Book 1 is fun because it sets up the plot. I then enjoyed the green one with the pink ribbon a few weeks later. ...and there was one black cover one that was aesthetically interesting after the numerous neon volumes. If you need some aesthetic appeal to a shelf, these books can at least manage to do a base level job. "The one with green or black cover" is probably not what Sara was going for when attempting to make these memorable, but who am I to judge when I am the Melissa Mask clown that continued to come back....again...and again...and again....like the many iterations of Alison DiLaurentis.
Thanks to this series forever wasting a few days of my mortal life- I am plan to be murderously brutal. Most all the Liars books are two stars from me. ...ASIDE- from two, Ali's Pretty Little Secrets and the latest addition The Liars.

The Liars was a fun, fourth wall breaking, grave re-dug story. I enjoyed seeing the adult girls and their current lies....I mean, lives. Genuinely this story is a good one-sit read if you are willing to kill some time. Early in I was fully invested in a surprising way. I truly enjoyed where Sara has visualized her leading ladies. As a whole, this story felt better contrived than most of the others in the series. For the most part the plot made sense, I enjoyed references from previous iterations, and felt like it was a fun ride. All the girls felt well fleshed out and held fast to their tropes we all grew up either loving or hating.
Something I had truly blockaded from my personal A lair mind-palace was how atrociously INSUFFERABLE book Emily is. The gays deserve better. She is, without a doubt, one of the most annoying characters of any YA series I have ever had to endure. I didn't mind her plot in this one, but I cannot stand how painfully, soullessly, tiring she is to read. All people make mistakes, but Sara's biggest one was not letting Alison or any of her many minions put Emily out of her misery.

I liked about 85% of this book...and then the end hit. As most of this series, the epilogue is worth pushing through the cringe ending. Overall, if you are like me and had forged your way through 16 of these books you might as well read the 17th.
Concept 3/5
Setting 4/5
Characters 3/5 (1 star per liar hahaha)
Plot 3/5
Coherence 4/5
Romance 3/5

Verdict- Tippy the bird may not be tweeting about it, but no one will lock you up in the Radley Sanitarium for reading it either

A short aside.
Regardless of criticizing Sarah's writing for years I have always loved her story concepts. She cultivated a following which grew into an even larger phenomenon when our TV liars first had that iconic sleepover on tv. Pretty Little Liars has been such a treasured memory for me. From watching it with gals in our dorm and attempting to read all the novels before the next episode could air- to making a "Pretty Little TV Pact" to the guy I ended up marrying. My husband, was just a friend while the show was still on air, and I would drive to his parents house and watch in their basement while doing laundry for college. We later brought his best friend in on the fun and it has been years of laughter and A jokes. While the tv series was coming into it's last season I even had met a couple gals online who would theorize with me. One of them just had their first baby and I can't believe how this silly show impacted my entire future.
Although I sold all my physical book copies (except Ali's Pretty Little Secrets which is like a 4 star read) those books represent a huge puzzle piece of my life story. So Sara Shepard, Marlene King, the 6 main gals- if you ever accidentally stumble upon this, Thank you. :)

Okay so I have multiple opinions of this book that I want to let out. So I wanna start off by saying that when it comes to a series that I like, I will always read every book, companion novel, prequels/sequels, etc, regardless if it’s good simply because I am a dedicated reader and fan. With that being said, did I like this audible read? No. Will I read any more future PLL books? Definitely. No matter how much I feel like this series was a bit dragged by the author, I will always read any additional manuscripts pertaining to the PLL storyline and characters. So here are my overall thoughts:
1) One thing I was definitely saddened by is that none of the girls were with the significant others they were initially with in the original books’ ending: Spencer and Wren, Hannah and Mike, Aria and Noel. I understand it’s fifteen years later, but the couples’ stories had a pretty decent build up in the original series and it sucks that the development of the characters were ALL just wiped away.
2) Okay, I understand that the purpose of the story is that the Liars just never learn their lesson, and I understand you definitely have to add in a messy situation. But I feel like Aria’s actions were very anti climactic. So Emily cheated on her wife, and Spencer looked through a colleague’s laptop to help her own case, and Hanna is cheating on her husband (justified because he cheated on her first), but Aria plagiarizing her student’s painting as her own?? The other three’s actions were wrong but not like something so unforgivably horrible (and illegal). I mean we saw a similar situation with Aria and a stolen painting with that Olaf guy. I feel like after the legal issues the girls went through in the past, stealing another person’s artwork is definitely not something Aria would do. I feel like it wasn’t in her character and a repetitiveness of a previous plot.
3) I also didn’t like Spencer dealing with the same familial issues even now because a few things were resolved in the end of the original series. Her parents’ still making her feel like her achievements weren’t enough while she’s a whole successful lawyer?? Also mentioning her still feeling lesser than her sister Melissa because she’s married and a mother, which was upsetting because in the end of the original series Melissa and Spender mended their relationship and there were bound to be no more jealousy and competitiveness with each other. It just seems like the events in the original series were pointless.
4) And ahh Emily. Yes, I guess it’s in her personality to always have a soft vulnerable spot for Alison/Courtney. But I mean come on, in Vicious, Emily was the one who completely had enough of Alison and risked her life to catch Alison in her act. She was in a dangerous situation and almost died fighting her off. While I did believe Emily would definitely be the one to visit Alison in prison for personal trauma reasons, it absolutely does not make sense that she would testify on behalf of Alison for parole. After all Alison put them through, it ruins Emily’s character to continue falling for Alison’s manipulations and oblige her wants and needs.
5) In the Epilogue, we have another one of Alison’s repetitive thoughts of “Those bitches ruined my life” “I will get my revenge on those bitches” “They will pay” blah blah blah. Those lines aren’t new, and we saw them in the series as well as the companion novels. What doesn’t make sense is that why is Alison still so completely obsessed with revenge on the Liars? I would think that after “Ali’s Pretty Little Lies”, it would’ve been better if we got to see more of Alison’s thoughts on her sister, Courtney. We got an inside look at Courtney’s mind in that book, but we never saw the nature of Alison’s personality. What made her hate Courtney so much and why was she so manipulative? Ughh, I hate that it ended with her receiving parole and promising herself that she’ll get revenge on the girls once she’s out. And someone gave her the USB of their confessions?? Like honestly I think Sara Shepard needs to leave the original series alone. It was good the way it had ended.

So yeah overall I didn’t like this read but I gave it a 3-star because at some point there was a tense climax and a bit thrilling. I’m just going to go through life pretending that the series ended with Vicious and the girls are somewhat back to normal life and with their original significant others.

I will read anything Sara Shepard does with these characters. Everything about this to me was perfect. I wasn’t sure at first if I understood if each of the liars starting places made sense, especially Aria’s, but for the most part they stayed true to the past books. The epilogue ends the book on such a high that I can’t imagine Shepard will not come back to this series. I hope this ends up in print one day to add to my bookcase.

3.5⭐️ This is a really fast paced, fun read!

It gives the reader a glimpse into the lives of the adult girls and how their adolescent trauma has affected each of them. Unfortunately they haven’t stopped lying, thus a new string of threats begins.

It’s definitely worth a chance if you enjoyed the Pretty Little Liars novels and you like audiobooks. The narrator is good!

I’m one of the readers of this series who has said that I’d gladly read twenty more books in this series if the author felt compelled to write more, even if they were blatant cash grabs, and I was definitely excited to hear that this story was in production and featured a time jump from the previous book in the series. This story is marketed as a story set after the 16th book in the Pretty Little Liars books series that follows Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hannah all grown up, but still with secrets. I loved this premise and I was extremely curious to see if this story featured Alison/A and/or a new A, or if this story was going to try and stand on its own feet without Alison or A as an antagonist. I think it’s a strange choice to make this an Audible original and audio only story set after the 16th book, because books 9 through 16 aren’t available in audiobook format. I think it’s just a weird choice from a marketing and accessibility standpoint to only make the audiobooks for books 1 through 8 and 17. I liked how this story started with a television interview that essentially caught us up on the world post-time-jump. I loved finding these characters as grown adults. While I always wanted to read more books about these girls in college, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them grown up. I liked seeing where the girls, now women, ended up and how their troubles from the first 17 books molded their personalities and futures. Where they were in their lives after the time jump perfectly fit the book version of these characters and where we last left off with them. I loved the mention of characters and events from previous books, it made the weight of this story and the continuity feel tangible. These characters fit perfectly in an adult domestic thriller setting, I would happily read a spin-off sequel book series following these characters as adults. While I did like this story, there were a few things that felt off. The wedding scene felt strange and poorly executed. It was supposed to be a huge scene but I felt like it wasn’t written well enough to justify some of the weirder aspects to it. I thought it was a dream sequence until the next chapter. I liked the reveal of the new A’s identity in this story and the overall motive behind it all, but I just wish that there were more hints prior to the reveal in order to make it stronger and pack more of a punch. The motive fit the story but the execution wasn’t as strong as it could have been, the A reveal felt a little like a cartoon villain revealing their evil plan, but it could have easily been a stronger reveal had the writing been stronger before the climax. I liked the secondary cast of characters in this book, but I was disappointed that A’s character wasn’t as fleshed out before the reveal, it took away from the impact and felt a little random. I liked the epilogue and how it leaves the world of the book series open for more future instalments, which I would gladly read. I’d happily read a spin-off book series set after this story, maybe even an adult sequel series for an older audience. I had some problems with this, but it was still a nice return to this world and these characters. I still feel as though I will always happily return to these characters no matter how many times Sara Shepard chooses to write more entries in the series.

The book felt like catching up with old friends and hearing all about their messy lives and shenanigans. I loved the original Pretty Little Liars books and this was a comfort read that I listened to in a day.

If you come to this series hoping for unpredictable, complex characters and plot, then keep searching because these books are not that. But damn they are so fun and addictive.

The Liars are now adults and the drama continues to follow them.

Spencer is a lawyer now sleeping with her coworker. Aria is getting married but her fiancé might not be over his ex. Hanna has crafted a perfect facade but her cheating husband has her eyes wandering as well. Emily is trying to create a family with her wife but a past love comes back and shakes up her life. THE DRAMA !

I felt like the story was drawn out though. Like I said, the plot isn’t complex but for A to be reveal as some family that Hannah wronged was WACK!!

BUT in the epilogue, we get a scene with Alison in the asylum still wanting to get revenge on the girls, except Emily because that’s her boo. But Alison is ready to ruin the other girls and I would definitely read that.

Same liars. Same shenanigans. Different book. One final round with the liars.

So far this year, I have somehow indulged in every ridiculous Pretty Little Liars book Sara Shepard released. Yes, I took time out of my life for all 17 (+2 ) of these novels. Book 1 is fun because it sets up the plot. Book 8 is where I should have stopped. Book 16 ended the series in a satisfying way.

The Liars is set 15 years after Vicious and I was a bit heartbroken at how Shepard dramatically changed each of the girls’ lives from where I left them last. For the most part the plot made sense and I liked about 75% of this book...and then the end hit. As with most of this series, the epilogue is worth pushing through the cringe ending. Overall, if you pushed your way through 16 of these books you might as well read the 17th.

*if book 18 ever comes to pass, plz lock me up in the Radley Sanitarium before I can read it. This has got to be the end of my PLL era ✌🏻

I didn't know this was #17 before starting it so didn't know anything about the backstory. I also would not have read this had I known it was part of the Pretty Little Liars series. Just not my style of story.
Nothing against the story or the author, but there were two character with names that were too similar to my life and set things off weirdly for me personally. But I persisted hoping the story would improve. It did not. The whole drama felt very high school (as one would expect but it was still surprising to me based on the premise)
I also really did not enjoy that the character that was professional artist stole other artists' artwork repeatedly. And to impress a man. That is just pathetic. No real, self respecting artist would ever do that.

hello?? who wrote this??? this is basically fanfic of PLL where it was decided to break every couple from the other books while making the liars dumb as hell. also this new A was ass not going to even lie. The 3 stars are:
1. respect for sara because of the whole saga
2. i got to see the girls…
3. the epilogue was good.
I basically went through it out of respect for Sara but not only did I hate the voice person for this audiobook but i hate how the girls behaved. Also THIS Emily going back to see Alison?? Insanity. The only good thing out of that was the ending which if the story had started there would’ve been so much better. Hopefully if Sara decides to do another, it will be 100% better than this. Otherwise, Ill pretend this never happened. Thats that.

Cant Review - leaving this anywhere that matters
Book is only available on Kindle with a valley girl voice from the 90s-essentially nails on a chalkboard with no fluctuation. I cannot listen to that voice for 7 hours so i am heartbroken i will never know the follow up story.
Being that it is only on audio via Kindle is a joke and a scam - so people hard of hearing or entirely deaf will not be able to enjoy this "publication"

4.25 🌟 Had no idea this book was a thing and I was so excited to be back in this world. The rest of the series had be in a chokehold back in the day and the show always had me sat. Our main FMCs felt not the same as the sixteen other books but it was super fun and nostalgic. Given the epilogue, I kinda want more…💋

3.5 rounded up. Honestly it should be more of a 3 but I just enjoy PLL and the characters so much I was just excited for some new content. The story wasn't really necessary and ended with more open ends than it started with. I wish there was a little more to it. I'm assuming there's more to come?

Does Sara remember the characters? I was so excited for this one after finishing all the Pretty Little Liars books, but it was pretty subpar. I don't know if there was a short deadline to write it, but that's how it felt.

As a huge fan of the original Pretty Little Liars series, I was very disappointed with this book. it’s been 15 years since the events of the last PLL book, and these characters feel like they haven't grown up at all. In fact, they seem to have actually gone backward in maturity. Frankly, I felt like events of the author was writing about characters she didn't know, as their motivations were thin and the entire story felt unauthentic. Am I the only one who feels like she completely confused the characters she created with the TV series characters? The blend of identities was jarring and ruined the story's integrity, making it a frustrating and confusing read from beginning to end. I truly hope the author gets back on track and reconnects with the core of her original creations in the next book, because this one was a major letdown.
