With help from Evelyn's boyfriend Tyler, Evelyn does a super job solving this case. I love the characters in this series. The storyline is fun and full of surprises. I really enjoyed reading this story. There's action, mystery, love and excitement, all in the matter of a few days right before Evelyn's 25th birthday. There's not a dull moment in the whole story, well done!
I received this book as part of an ARC team and this is my honest review.

Evelyn is nearing her 25th birthday, but, she doesn’t want a big party. Meanwhile there is a murder at the hair stylist shop & Evelyn smells magic there. When meeting someone who is scared about being involved at a church, she notices very dark magic & a murder. There is a startling discovery about something to do with her family as well. Evelyn has to be certified as a full witch on the morning of her birthday & she certainly packs a heck of a lot into that particular day. A very interesting & enjoyable read.
What a wonderful read! There is suspense, revealing and tender moments, shocking surprises and an ongoing mystery. Add to this interesting characters and touching friendships and you have the ingredients of an excellent read.
Evie is stressing over all that's on her plate and adding a couple of murders isn't helping at all. This installment kept me engaged and ended on a bittersweet note. I can't wait for more adventures with Evelyn and her friends.
THOUGHTS: This was a fun story with a lot of twists and turns. Although this is the sixth in the series, you don’t really have to have read the others to understand what’s going on. I didn’t – though I’m going to. And is seriously suggest you do as well so you do get some of the nuances of the story – like them hunting for a Sphere that appears to be a continuing plot line.
In this one, Evelyn is approaching her twenty-fifth birthday which is when she’ll become a full-fledged witch. If she passes the test of the Council. Everyone wants to throw her a grand party, but she wants nothing to do with that. Especially since she has to prove to the cops that she wasn’t responsible for a recent murder.
I enjoyed the quirky characters, the family/friend dynamics- and the ending (not giving it away, but it was good). But the series is definitely not over as the thread of the Sphere and the mystery surrounding the deaths of Evelyn’s parents continues on.
To quote a line from the book, “Oh my gosh, this is better than any soap opera” and it most assuredly was.
All of the beloved characters from the series are back in this book and giving us several surprises along the way with humor and romance. As Evelyn is turning 25, she will become a full witch. She is determined to solve the death of her parents including investigating the dangerous Sphere. As always, the author’s writing keeps the reader reading and unable to put the book down. You could read this series out of order, but it’s so much fun and better to read it in order. The author does make references to past events that you will find in previous books of the series.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
A mysterious stranger, A birthday and murders in this cozy!
A Witchy Birthday, and a mysterious stranger or 2. Murder and black magic a plenty. Will Evelyn become a full Witch on her Birthday? Will Evelyn and her promised figure out more of the relics story in order to beat Salis van der Kolt before he does? A wonderful book in the continuation of this series! I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.
Black Magic Murder is a twisty, suspenseful cozy mystery with surprising reveals! Start reading early in the day or you will be up too late. This amazing book has it all - lots of suspense, action, dark magic, secrets revealed and some tender moments. Evelyn will certainly remember her 25th birthday!
It’s a big birthday for Evelyn. Twenty-five is when she can get full certification as a witch. Unfortunately, it’s also time to solve another murder or two. This first murder was bad enough. The second took a really dark turn. Plus a couple of people finally return home. And we have a huge surprise turn up for Evelyn and Aunt Edie. I love this series!
Great addition to thos series! This one 9s a pivotal book in the series is DO NOT skil over it or you will be lost!! There are a lot of relationship dynamics revelations in this particular episode of the series! That fa t aline kept fresh anx interesting! Enjoy sleep reading peeps!
This story was a great deal more scary than some of the other ones! It was also a big turning point in one specific person in the story! I'd really love to spell it all you for everyone but then I would ruin it for the next person to read!
Only a few authors can write a series that stays fresh, intriguing, and difficult to predict. Based on this series, looks like Polly Holmes is one of those special people!
Each installment of this series is like a fine wine, getting more delectable with every sip. The characters? They're not just characters, they're my fictional soulmates, serving up drama and delight with the precision of a master chef. Bravo!
