When the orcs invaded the human dimension, no one could stop them. War raged for years, and now the monstrous beasts have agreed to peace on two conditions: one, the human scientists must rebuild the machine that brought them to this world; and two, they must be provided with fertile brides to bear them orc babies.
Silvie has always believed in the saying, “be the change you want to see in the world”. That’s why she volunteers to become a tribute and goes to one of the first institutes for orc brides to open in North America. Then the institute is attacked, and an orc horde saves the young women from a terrible fate. The orc captain must be rewarded, and Silvie ends up being his prize. She’s always known she would be mated to an orc. She just thought she’d have more time…
Kelraz the Vicious is a monster on the battlefield. He spills his enemies’ blood without remorse, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a code of honor. There’s one thing he won’t stand for – innocent females and children being hurt. On his way to the mountains, he hears the screams of the human females, and swoops in to save them. As a reward, he can pick one of them. He picks Silvie, the curvy, green-eyed beauty who doesn’t flinch at the sight of blood.
Cara Wylde loves to write about strong, feisty women and their hot Alphas who will do anything to make them happy. Her books are filled with romance and just a dash of mystery, suspense, and that eerie atmosphere she fell in love with reading too many gothic novels. With a master's degree in Comparative Literature, she can't help but play with tropes and themes from various genres, trying to come up with fresh perspectives on the paranormal characters her readers love so much. Vampires, shape-shifters, demons, witches... Cara will always make sure they get their own twists.
When she's not writing, Cara is reading, planning her next story, or daydreaming. Her idea of pure heaven is a day filled with nothing but her laptop, a huge coffee pot, relaxing music, and a new, exciting project.
Meh. This was short and yet I still found myself skimming. I wanted to like it, but it felt silly- immature. The dialogue was painful for me to get through, there was no depth, only stiff awkward sentences and a plethora of ellipses. The plot was predictable and, tbh, unnecessary.
I was confused on the setting as well. One character would talk like they’re in modern times, the others would talk like they’re in a historical novel.
I was expecting at least some steamy scenes to make up for it, but there was only 2 and they were quick. 😔
Got high ratings, was free, smutty, and a novella so I went for it. Not terrible but not great. Pretty campy and tired in terms of the story line. Premise was good but execution wasn’t as solid; maybe bc it was short and had to be crammed in, but not my fave.
This is a short monster romance novella between Kelraz and Sylvie. Sylvie is a human woman who has volunteered to train to be an orc's bride. Kelraz the Vicious just so happens to be the orc that chose her. This is about them getting acquainted and falling for each other!
I didn't necessarily love this one, unfortunately. I really liked the situation these characters were in and how they got together. But I really don't enjoy the "girl hate" and "jealous girl" trope. And that was the conflict here :/ I also felt like this should have been a full-length book. I think novellas shouldn't leave you feeling that way. Things just happened too quickly & I did not see how they fell for each other. I thought it was really cool that the heroine was gluten intolerant! I also can't have gluten so I always appreciate it when I see that rep in a book :)
TW: attempted SA, drugging, poison, blood, murder, death
I didn't like the antagonist but I appreciate so much the orc love interest being gentlemanly and not an alpha-hole barbarian, while still balancing the possessiveness that makes these 'alien' sci-fi romances so interesting.
Plot was utterly predictable but didn't detract from the charm.
Kelraz the Vicious by Cara Wylde - my Friday evening read! 💚 This is the second Orc romance book I have ever read and I quite enjoyed it. My Hubby loves to play World of Warcraft … I think I may need to pay more attention 😉
▪️Orc romance ▪️Tribute bride ▪️Possessive MMC ▪️Short story ▪️Part of a series that can be read out of sequence
This book has me conflicted. I think that a 2 star rating is too low, but 3 stars would be too high. I know this is an introductory book and a short one at that, but it was still more than a little jarring. There wasn’t a lot (or really any) development and the story moved so quickly. Events happened in the span of a few hours (in some cases) and over all in a couple of days. The resolution was always done before the problem/drama had time to really settle. This led to me not feeling connected or scared for the characters.
We didn’t get a sense that these two (Silvie and Kelraz) actually had even one conversation. They went from strangers to bride and orc to “I love you” so fast I got whiplash. The orc horde was not really shown. I don’t even know how big this horde was, so I can’t visualize it in my head. At first I thought it was a small party (maybe 4-6) but then it felt much larger than that.
Some of the writing was a little jarring as well. POV changed in a chapter (some times in a paragraph) without any clear break or any indication of a switch. Then it would change back without pausing again. It completely took me out of the story because I had to stop and figure out who’s POV we were in. Just a small break and some indication there was a change would have help.
As for the characters, well like with the horde in general, Silvie and Kelraz were not extremely established. Silvie had some background given so we know her family and her were not on the best terms (not a spoiler as we learn this in the first two chapters) but Kelraz is completely blank. We don’t get anything from him. This made him seem paper thin.
I see potential in this series, so I will probably read the first book, but this novella was not my favorite.
Ok, I'm going to analyze this using the 4Cs. Characters: Silvie is an interesting character. Her background is well thought out, and she felt fleshed out, for a short novel. Too bad she's the only one. Every other character felt one dimensional and flat. Context: The world is interesting, and there's more world building than I expected for this book, being not only short but the 8th of a series. I wish the orcs had been better described, not only physically, but in other aspects, especially their culture. Conflict: There were a bunch of minor conflicts, but everything was solved too conveniently and far too fast, so it barely felt like conflict at all. Craft: This is where it failed the most. The dialogues were stiff and felt artificial, and the prose wasn't very good. Things happen for plot convenience without much thought, and the "foreshadowing" was painfully obvious.
In summary, it was not Bad, but it wasn't very good either. Ok, I'm going to analyze this using the 4Cs. Characters: Silvie is an interesting character. This was a fast paced book but a brilliant one at that, and what’s not to love about a strong Orc leader who only wants to make you happy and to protect you. Silvie is a nurse and was on the front lines of the war between the Orc’s and the humans and that’s why she became a tribute bride and in doing so her family disowned her but she new this was for a better life. Now at the insititute with other females it is being attacked by human males who don’t want there woman with these monsters. Captain Kelraz the vicious are returning home from a battle when they hear the screams of females being attacked and rush to there aid and saves them all and as his reward and prize is the feisty human female Silvie that’s not turned off by the blood and will make a perfect mate. Now traveling back to there mountain home they become quite close and once there there steamy nights now bring them closer together and they both start falling in love but there is one female orc that’s not happy about the human taking Kelraz away from her who she believes is her’s and poison’s Silvie to get rid of her for good after she just arrived but it fails and Kelraz is furious at who ever would try to kill his mate and will pay with there life. How does it all turn out for everyone involved and to get these answers and so much more this book is a must read.

Humans, ever true to form have been dabbling in things that they shouldn't. Scientist opened a portal to another world and sucked in a load of it's population. Not content with uprooting possibly half of the entire race of Orcs, the scientists then destroyed the machine that caused it all to happen, trapping the Orcs on Earth and starting a war. Sylvie has been on the front lines as a nurse and she has seen what both sides are capable of. Both have some measure of blame but the majority does pretty much rest with the humans for being the reason it all started. She feels that offering herself as a tribute bride will go some way to help heal the world. What she didn't bank on was humans being opposed to this and attacking the bride institutes. Luckily an Orc party was passing and helped them. This pretty much sealed Sylvie's fate. Kelraz could not ignore the sounds of screaming nor could he ignore women being attacked. An honourable act which has now left him with a bride. Not quite what he anticipated but she is here now. They were looking for a place to call home now he has even more incentive to build something safe. Can Sylvie ever truly have a place within the Horde? Will this peace last? Great introduction to the series! These are great books.
I've read the English version. As for the German title, it's wrong. Vicious doesn't mean heimtückisch, which would rather be insidious. I also saw the translation for the other books in the series and they are all stupid. Whoever translated that isn't any good. Saw that with many American Indie books being translated into German. They rather read like translated with Google and really badly at that. A shame.
Well... I think this needs editing... and everything else. Like plot, world building, character and relationship development and growth. Especially since this is part of a series.
The Orc hierarchy is off. The lowest, the grunts, have more tattoos than the raiders or captains. How do they get rid of tattoos when they get a higher rank? Doesn't make sense. Continuity was off as well. In one moment Silvie is drenched in blood, the next nothing is mentioned but not if she changed.
I find it oddly fascinating how characters in such genre always determine all kinds of character traits of other people in 5 seconds while conversing 3 words. Must be magic. Or the use of words like "always, usually, ever, all the time" when the time frame actually consists of 1 or 2 days of plot.
After years of battle, both the Orcs and humans are willing to negotiate peace under the condition that the scientists will rebuild the machine between their worlds and will allow human volunteers for mating with the Orcs. As the Orc Captain Kelraz the Vicious travels to the mountains, he hears screams from the new bride Institute housing volunteers for the program. As human females are attacked, Kelraz doesn’t hesitate as he saves them. To reward him for his actions, he is permitted to choose a bride for himself. Because Silvie is brave and doesn’t react in fear at the sight of blood, he chooses her. Is she ready for her chance to become an Orc bride? Will Kelraz love and protect her?
I am always delighted when we see examples of the Orcs in the story behaving with honor to erase our preconceived notions of how they will act. Although vicious and fierce in battle, the Orcs are kind and protective of not only their mates in these stories, but usually women and children in general. It leaves the reader with hope for the future as humans and Orcs learn to live together.
Silvie (h) is a former frontline nurse from the human-Orc conflict and has decided to offer herself as an Orc tribute bride, a program that is part of the agreement to end the war. The institute where she's staying to prepare to be an Orc bride is attacked by humans opposed to Orc-Human pairings. Silvie and the other women are saved when a passing Orc horde led by Kelraz (H) comes to the rescue. Kelraz is drawn to Silvie and agrees to take her as his bride as thanks for his aid. Kelraz takes his bride to their new mountain encampment where she has to learn to navigate life in the horde and with her new mate. Kelraz and Silvie begin to develop feelings for on another, and their relationship gets hotter and steamier. Wonderful characters - really loved Kelraz & Silvie! A nice prequel to the Orc Mates series.
I liked that this is a short story to introduce you to the Orc Mates Series. This story is about Kelraz the Vicious and Silvie. Silvie had volunteered to be a tribute bride so she goes to the institute in North America. The institute is attacked and Sivia is saved by the captain and his reward is Silvia. There is alway complications with other Orc's, especially some female Orc's, that are jealous of the human women. One poisons Silvia and her mate Kelraz is infuriated. There is some suspense, twists, passion and hot steam. Will Silvia live long enough to have an Orc baby? This was a great story and I loved the HEA.

I've never read a book about orks, so it was a surprise. I liked the story of how they came to be on earth, through no fault of their own. However, being a warrior race, who had magic to increase their deadly weapons, quickly conquered our planet. I could see the arrogance of the self righteous buffoons who decided that women who were willing to help co exist with them, by becoming brides for the Orks, and it made me so mad. It's always women who have to make things work. I loved how our heroine, learns to adapt, and stand her ground through some pretty scary incidences. Her Great big Ork captain, is strong, and protective, so we do get a happy ending.
I really enjoyed this for the most part. It was quick, the spice was good, the main couple was cute, and I was fascinated by the mage's magic. I really loved seeing the difference in cultures between humans and orcs and that Silvie and Ishan became friends. However, I wasn't too fond of the beef Zulya had with Silvie. I know there had to be an antagonist but the whole "pit the only two females in the story against eachother and have them fight over a man" just feels too played out. I'd have loved for the two women to be friends. Zulya had this unrequited love for Kelraz for lord knows how long. To the point she was willing to kill his bride. And then suddenly at the end 3 months later she's over him and in love with Ishan? It felt forced.

Silvie is a nurse that had seen much from the war with the orcs. She decides to become a tribute bride to the orcs and her family disown her. When human rebels attach the school for orc brides, it's an orc captain that saves her and the school. Kelraz is an orc captain that save a tribe school and he takes a bride, Sylvie. A female orc in the horde doesn't like Silvie because she believes Kelraz should be with her. When Sylvie is poisoned, Kelraz is enraged, Sylvie is his mate and no one will harm her again.

3 1/2 stars. After being a nurse on on the front line after Orcs were pulled through the portal, she wants to be the first to sign up for the peace mission. To be a tribute bride. Silvie's family has disowned her but she has to do what she believes is right. When radicals break into the institute to harm the women, Kelraz and his horde are close by and come to the rescue. When the manager offers him one of the tribute brides, he chooses Silvie. Kelraz assures her that she's safe with his horde, yet she can't help but wonder if it true. Someone doesn't want her there. This story is short but well written and has a slow-burn but is steamy with a HEA.
This is a really good novella, that gives a little background into how Orcs ended up on Earth, the war with humans, and the tentative peace that was made. I really enjoyed the character of Silvie - one of the first tribute brides for the Orcs. She's gutsy and strong and I loved that she stood her ground when she needed to. Kelraz the Vicious - the Orc horde Captain that claims Silvie as his bride - is both strong and formidable, while also showing a surprising soft devotion to his human mate. The story was well written and I'll definitely be checking out further books in the series. A very enjoyable read!
Silvie is a nurse that worked the front lines during the battle between the orcs and the humans. Shes has seen and understands both sides. The humans opened a portal drawing the orcs here and then got them stuck here. The orcs fought and the humans fought too. Now they have a sort of peace with the offering of brides to the orcs. When she signs up she is waiting for her day to be chosen when a rouge group of human men come to take the women away for themselves in a horror way. Kelraz is the captain who leads his horde to help the screaming women when they need help. In exchange they send Silvie with Kelraz as his bride. His horde is looking and find a camp but there is trouble towards Silvie from the start by one member of his horde.
I enjoyed this short read in the Orc Mates series and the two likable characters Orc leader Kelraz and his human mate Silvie. Given to Kelraz as a reward after his Orcs save the Tribute Brides Institute from an attack by human males their romance becomes a hot, and steamy well written engaging read. There is an unrequited love interest that inserts a little suspense into the storyline with a few nice twists to round things out and eventually culminating in a very satisfying HEA.

These Orcs are scary. I know I would be shaking in fear if ever I would encounter someone as fierce as the Captain in the cover page. That just goes to show how brave our FMC is and then fell in love with our MMC. Well, there’s no doubt about it once you get to know our mighty Captain.
This is the second book I read from this series and I enjoyed reading them. I am going to explore the other books from this series.

I have really enjoyed the books I have read in this series, I didn't realize until now how many there were so I have some catching up to do. But this prequel didn't disappoint. Silvie was a great character. I love how relatable she felt. She's the kind of character I want to be friends with. Kelraz might be vicious in battle but I loved seeing him and Silvie navigate this new relationship.
There was a little side story that is my most hated trope but it didn't ruin the overall story for me.

Silvie devoted her life to helping others and became a nurse. After the war with the orcs she decided to become a tribute.
I love these characters! This author's characters are always well written and utterly fascinating. I love this series so I was engrossed in the story of Silvie and Kelraz from the first page to the last. The first couple and their very unusual initial meeting made it impossible to put this book down. There is violence, orc magic, and a surprising twist in the plot, I think this is a must read.

Silvie is a nurse. She was on the front line in the orc and human war. She saw the devastation of the war. She decides to become a bride tribute to the orcs. The institute for the bride tributes is attacked by human men. Kelraz rescues the women at the institute for bride tributes. As a reward, he is given the choice of brides. He choices Silvie. The journey begins. This is a quick read about attraction and chemistry between Kelraz and Silvie. The have obstacles to overcome but has a HEA.

I am loving the Orc Mates series and I am so glad we got to find out how the tributes got started. In this book not only do we get Sylvia and Kelraz's story but we also get to find out why Sylvia became an Orc bride. From the amazing world this author has created to the interesting characters this series is turning out to be one of my favorites. The writing is well done and descriptive and the story is entertaining. I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Silvie was a military nurse during the Human-Orc conflict and has decided to offer herself as an Orc tribute bride now that there is a negotiated peace. When the tribute bride's institute is attacked, Kelraz and his fighters rescue them. He and Silvie have an attraction, so he takes her as his bride. How Silvie adapts and they build their relationship makes for a solid read and a page-turner from start to finish. It has sizzle, steam, action, drama, action, and more. Solid read.

This story kept my I terest from the beginning. I literally read this book in 3 hours ( life I terrutions...how rude).
Kelraz and Silvie are perfect... slight miscommunication due to cultural differences but true to the fact that love always finds a way. My great great grandmother once told me to marry the one that loves you more than you love him, for he will do anything for you and you will love him more than already do for it.....this is an example of that.
Zulya was soooo lucky that Silvie has a soft heart.
I’m loving orc stories and this author is one of the best storytellers with orc stories this might be a shortish story but it’s chock full of story goodness and this is Kelraz the Vicious and Silvie’s story. The orc institute was attacked they were saved by Kelraz the Vicious and his horde then as a reward Silvie was given to Kelraz as a bride. Fantastic story I loved it and the characters and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.
