“The Third Pig” is the first part of a trilogy of dystopian thrillers. The novel details the plight of a group living in an ancient coastal castle, cut adrift from the rest of the world. After a generation of surviving in their self-imposed prison they make the call to exit their walls in the hope of finding a new life in a world that is now in tatters.
The group is led by Lugosi, a dark unsettling leader, whose complex ambitions are not always as they first seem. He is feared and adored in equal measures, but the reader will have to make up their own minds as to whether he has his follower’s best interests at heart or is merely looking after himself.
We hear of the group’s progress and of Lugosi’s ruthlessness from two narrators. One, an old man who has long served as an advisor to Lugosi. The other, a young girl who has spent her life defending their ancient castle. Both narrators are linked closely to the unfolding plot, falling victim to their own separate miseries as the journey continues. To the old man, he can barely recognise the outside world which he once thrived in. To the young girl, who has never stepped foot outside of the castle walls, she can scarcely believe what she sees.
With the survivors desperate to establish a new safe haven for their community, we hear how society has fallen into anarchy during the group’s time behind walls. The government and the grid have long fallen, rewinding human progress to the days before technological advancement. Raging gangs now dominate the land, most notably the scourge of our group and their main enemies, who are known as “The Nobodies.” This brood are a fearsome bunch, horrific in both their appearance and their activity. Their leader is a sinister and frightening figure with the plot building to an inevitable confrontation between him and Lugosi.
As the collective strives to find another home they see how the world has changed with the reduced human activity. We learn about the stories of many of those who still live their lives in “the wilds” adapting and thriving with all the challenges that the new world has brought.
