Aavar Medansh, chief pilot to the human colony on Yaspur, has had his sights set on Bree Stewart since the moment she touched his tendrils. Despite his best efforts, the tough, exuberant mechanic-in-training rebuffs him at every turn. When he finally gets the chance to take her on a date to his own colony city, he can’t believe his luck.

But Aavar is keeping secrets. Beneath the clownish jousting and flirtation, he hides a dark past that he fears will push Bree away. Before he can gather the courage to tell her the truth, their transpo is shot down in the jungle by smugglers looking to cache Bree in for a big payday on the Outer Exchange. What was the best night of his life quickly turns into a nightmare as they run for their lives.

Oh my, this blew the previous books out of the water and though I’ve rated this the same as the one prior I definitely enjoyed this way more it just had so much going on and took me on such an emotional rollercoaster If I could rate it more than five stars I so would it deserves all of the stars. The writing and storytelling have grown considerably with each new offering to the series and there wasn’t anything here that I found a negative. I was absolutely transfixed throughout all the way to that gripping finale.

So we have been introduced to both these main characters previously and though I wasn’t that intrigued initially now that I’ve read this I’m bloody obsessed. I seriously adore Aavar and Bree they are both just so flawed and imperfect that they just click neither is a conventional hero or heroine and that’s actually what makes them so relatable and totally refreshing. Despite everything they both had to endure here they still get to have their HEA and I was rooting for there survival all of the way.

So Aavar is a Shilpakaari pilot he initially assisted in transporting the liberated humans to the colony which he nicknamed space day. It’s here he discovered there was a discreet clandestine experiment in hand so he blackmailed the Shilpakaari ambassador in charge into giving him a place on it. On space day he connected with a human woman Bree and believes this opportunity will give him a chance to actively pursue her.

Aavar is brash a flirt and a jokester he’s a comedian who uses this persona as a mask to shield his more serious vulnerable real self. It’s probably one of his greatest deceits as nobody especially Bree would ever guess at the hurt buried underneath the loud bravado. He has an inferiority complex which is hidden beneath these brash outer layers. Aavar considers himself less of a male a fact reinforced by everyone around him.

When he was younger and attending the academy on a scholarship he was attacked and maimed losing half of his main his tendrils. This attack cost him everything left with a mountain of medical debt and a family who abandoned him walking away when he needed them he is now very much alone. He attempts to hide his perceived deformity with a synth cap but every day he still feels less and not deserving hence the humour he uses as a crutch to deflect.

He’s also not a physical male not exceptionally strong or even a fighter again because of his affliction. It was actually refreshing to experience a hero that was not superman and was just more real and though an alien more human. Aavar was a trier and when he finds his inner strength it just makes it all the more special.

In the same way, Bree is also unconventional she is very resilient and a tough nut she is also not that scarred by her captivity. She’s a mechanic in training and a hard diligent worker. She’s also brash honest and very blunt. Curses like a sailor and is definitely all kinds of inappropriate. She’s not overly feminine or girly and does initially buy into the bullshit visage that Aavar showcases. Mistakenly labelling him a cocksure playboy. Though she does reluctantly find herself charmed by him even whilst she’s equally irritated.

Bree is also loyal and steadfast and pragmatic once she decides on a course of action unstoppable. So if she needs to play the hero that’s what she’s doing. Her background has shaped who she is as a person and she struggles with commitment due to her chaotic childhood.

This one had it all danger suspense and some thrilling action. There’s also heartbreak pain romance and a deep all consuming passion that cultivates from complete acceptance. So much darker in tone than its predecessors this actually deals with some serious issues.

The second half of this was where this definitely shone brightest and it was bloody amazing. I was on the edge of my seat and unable to put this down I was that invested in the outcome. I seriously recommend this series I just love how much sci-fi is interwoven with the romance. I’m looking forward to reading other stories set in this imaginative world.

This was my favorite of the series so far.

Heart wrenching and emotional. I was so invested. I loved Bree and Aavar. They were both broken but kept fighting, never giving up on each other. Bree has to be one of the most badass tough heroines I've ever read. Her tenacity and grit were humbling. She kept going when 99% of others would have given up. This truly was a tale about real love....love that is selfless....love that gives even if there is no promise of an HEA.

Beautiful. One of my favorite couples/story that I've read in a long time.

PERSISTENCE came in swinging and it was even darker and more intense than the last book, especially in the second half. The world-building continues to be extraordinary and I love what Etta Pierce has created because these aliens are actually ALIENS! They have so many differences to humans and the depth to the various alien cultures, the politics, the biological diversity are all explored with such nuance and flair.

Bree was a really great FMC and I loved her spunk and fire and how she always said whatever she was feeling. She had that classic New Yorker bluntness and had no problem taking care of herself; she was the definition of resilient but she also had walls that were sky high and she wasn't used to being vulnerable. Luckily, Aavar was the perfect match with his goofy, easy going persona and his determination to win Bree over. Aavar was a delight to read about and I loved his journey to finding acceptance in himself, because underneath his sunny disposition he was really hurting. Aavar just wanted desperately to find acceptance and to be treated like a whole person.

These two were really put through the ringer and it was truly heartbreaking to see everything Elaxi subjected them to, especially Aavar, but they fought hard for their coil (mating). Bree and Aavar's relationship all happened under incredibly stressful circumstances and I do wish we had seen a few more happier moments after their rescue but I'm sure they'll pop up here and there in future books. What we did get was a great mix of spicy, heartfelt, and emotional.

Outside of Bree and Aavar, I also really enjoyed seeing more of the other delegates from Piro's boyish enthusiasm, to Hunar's grumbly attitude, to Bajora's flirting. And we also got more of Vin and Pom Pom! I adored how protective Vin was as Pom Pom's adoptive father and I can't wait for his book to come. PERSISTENCE also introduced some new characters like Sizzle and Siatesh as well as a murky and dangerous corporation that I'm sure we haven't seen the last of.

Content Warning: brief references to FMC being trafficked and raped; on page sexual assault of the MMC (not by the FMC); blindness due to an injury; discussion around an alien species that ostracizes those with disabilities or illnesses

My favorite of the series, thus far. It’s back to feeling like a space opera with romance and my goodness, what a delicious slow burn romance it is! I fell in love with both characters and enjoyed more involvement and situations with the other characters.

Etta Pierce is just so good at putting a gripping story mixed with a slow burn romance together and making it feel so different every time. I am not a slow burn kinda gal normally and in these stories, it doesn’t even phase me. This one may be my favorite so far as well. It has pirates, it has action and a villain that personally made me want to jump into the pages and beat up. Seriously, they were so vile and the things our MCs go through had me wondering how much more pain can they take? They go through the ringer big time and I found myself wincing because of the adversaries they had to face.

Bree is probably my favorite FMC. She’s a New Yorker, blunt, foul mouthed, tolerates zero BS and a flies by the seat of your pants kinda gal. Aavar our MMC has this boyish charm and flirtatious nature that reminded me a lot of Han Solo. He had a lot of personal insecurities (rightfully so due to his culture) that he had to work through and I enjoyed watching him realize that he’s worthy of someone like Bree.

There is an over arching storyline so all the books need to be read in order. Please keep that in mind. The world building blows me away each and every time and I wish I could see how Etta plans everything out. The story is so captivating and the world (Universe?)is incredibly fleshed out. The author takes so many things into consideration, like culture, physical appearances, history and even how interspecies relationships have children.

I’m looking so forward to reading Watch Your Orbit next which takes place in the same Universe but lighter hearted with less high stakes. Then, in April we have Resistance which in my opinion has the most exciting coupling :)

👽FMC with emotional baggage
🛠️MMC with even more emotional baggage

Persistence by Etta Pierce is Book 4 in the Intersolar Union series—interconnected yet standalone alien–human romances set in a shared universe. The worldbuilding deepens with each installment, immersing readers in past lore while setting up new plot arcs and intriguing romantic possibilities with deliciously interesting aliens. The books feel meaningfully connected, yet each story stands out with its own distinct tone and emotional depth, bringing refreshing complexity to the alien romance genre.

Prickly New Yorker FMC Bree Stewart is one of the human survivors of the mass alien abduction event that launches the series. With the emergence of a sanctuary colony for the newly freed, Bree is determined to rebuild her life, throwing herself into training as a mechanic specializing in alien transport technology. She often pushes herself to the point of exhaustion, the relentless work taking a toll on her body as well as her spirit.

MMC Aavar Medansh, a flirty Shilpakaari pilot with a tortured past, has had his sights set on Bree ever since the moment she managed to smile at him after the rescue—despite everything she’d endured. It was a spark of light he couldn’t forget, no matter how dark his own past. Emotionally complicated and afraid of commitment, Bree consistently rebuffs him—terrified of letting anyone get close enough to see the real her, yet secretly thrilled that he keeps trying.

Their romantic cat-and-mouse game is abruptly cut short when a trip into the city ends in disaster: smugglers shoot down their transport over the jungle. Aavar is captured, but not before making a selfless move to protect Bree, leaving them stranded and painfully separated. Seriously injured, Bree fights through burns, slowly failing vision, and a broken foot—not to save herself, but to find a way to rescue Aavar and get him out alive.

By whatever means necessary.

Persistence definitely has a few tricks up its sleeve. It begins almost like a slice-of-life story, following everyone as they settle into the new colony—their routines, their ways of life, and the relationships slowly taking shape among them. Just as I started wondering where the plot was headed—boom!—the tone shifts completely, transforming from that day-to-day view into a dark survival story. While the series as a whole carries its share of dark undertones, simply by nature of its premise, Persistence—especially in its second half—dives even deeper, pushing its main characters through the wringer both physically and emotionally.

This content includes:

I love when a book’s title carries real meaning, and Persistence delivers that in spades—with Bree as its definitive embodiment. Her determination to rescue Aavar, even while enduring her own devastating injuries, feels like a true hero’s quest—one that speaks volumes about her love and loyalty, far beyond what her halting words could express. And when Bree is later captured by the smugglers, Aavar’s unwavering resolve to save her brings the story to a powerful, full-circle conclusion.

That said, I would’ve loved to see more of Bree and Aavar in the aftermath—once they’d both healed. So much of their romance and physical connection unfolds under duress, either as they’re fighting for their lives against the smugglers or as part of Aavar’s recovery. A final intimate moment in the epilogue—one where Bree isn’t on the brink of death and Aavar isn’t haunted by the antagonist—would’ve been a perfect way to show their love in peace, not just in survival.

I’m so glad we have a writer like Etta Pierce in the alien romance genre—someone who brings such refreshing, complex storylines and intricate yet accessible worldbuilding to the table. I’m constantly impressed by her work and can’t wait to see where the series goes next.

Persistence is book 4 in the addictive Intersolar Union series. We met Aavar and Bree in Vigilance, and I've been looking forward to their story ever since. We find out how Aavar and Bree first met. He was one of the pilots who transported the humans to the planet Yaspur. Aavar fell for Bree from the start and I loved their meet cute.

Bree is a mechanic from New York and she decides to continue working in this field. Except, now she has to fix alien spaceships and other tech that she is not familiar with. She pretty much spends all of her time training and practicing her new skills. She doesn't have time to deal with Aavar's flirty behaviour and reciprocate his feelings. But Aavar is so sweet and happy-go-lucky that Bree can't help but eventually soften toward him. Bree finally decides to take a much-needed break and goes on a date with Aavar on his own colony city. It's all fun and games until Aavar's ship is shot down by smugglers and they crash land in the jungle.

Okay, I love a good survival romance in the jungle. I should've known that Etta Pierce's version of a jungle romance would be more stressful than usual 😂 I was so stressed out reading this book, but I also loved it at the same time?? I can't really explain it. I feel like when you pick up an Etta Pierce book, you're in for a simultaneously fun and stressful time 😂 The only reason why I am not giving this book a 5 star rating is because I was TOO WORRIED about Bree's VERY SERIOUS injuries. Girl was literally on the brink of death?? I was terrified for the things she had to do while she was like 1 minute away from literally dying. I was constantly worrying about her eyes, her fever, and INFECTION. It was all a bit too much, please pick one struggle 😭

I truly loved this book, especially Aavar and Bree's relationship development. I loved Aavar, the happy-go-lucky man who hides deep scars. I loved Bree, the tough mechanic-in-training who's protective of her people. I loved seeing Bree stand up for Aavar 🥺 And it was so sweet how Aavar interacts with the kids, especially Pom Pom 🥺🫶🏽 We also get some truly delicious moments between Vin and Imani and I cannot wait for their enemies to lovers romance!! Their chemistry is already on fire 🔥

This book introduces some new characters that will now be a part of the newly-named colony, Renata. One of these characters will kickstart the spin-off Over The Moon series, and I've been advised to read Watch Your Orbit before Vin and Imani's story. So that's what I'll be doing!

✅ Friends to lovers
✅ Alien hero x human heroine
✅ He's a pilot
✅ She's a mechanic
✅ He falls first
✅ Survival in an alien jungle
✅ He has tentacles
✅ Pheromones

Received an ARC for an honest review.

I absolutely loved Bree and Aavar's story. Bree, the sassy mouthed, no filter new yorker and Aavar the broken Alien hero who hides behind his cheerfulness.

I will be honest and say I wasn't big on Aavar's story from the little sneak peak we got of him in the previous book. I thought he would be irritating with his cheerful attitude. However, I should know better by now with this author. The amount of depth and feeling she puts in her characters gets better with each book. The darkness that Aavar is hiding starts to peek out and you crave it more and more.

The storyline of Bree and Aavar was not an easy one and this is Etta's darkest book yet. Especially with a particular scene between one of the villains and Aavar. I could feel my heartbreak for Aavar in that scene and if you read it, you will know which scene I'm talking about!

The way the author is able to describe scenes and feelings, it felt like I was experiencing those along with the characters. When Bree was injured, the author was able to describe it in a way that most people would know what the feeling is like personally and that is what makes her books so well written.

This author has become one of my top favorites. If you enjoy T.A. White's Firebird series or Jesse Mihalik's books you would enjoy this book and her others. Though Etta's books are tad more spicy.

I don't want to spoil too much so I will say please give this author's work a try. This book *can* be read as a stand alone, but you will understand so much more if you start with the first book in the series.

Quickish Review 3.5 Stars

This entry is much darker, sadder, intense and features way more suffering than I was prepared for but I did ultimately love Bree and Aavar together. Their main conflict isn’t misunderstanding or lack of communication (thank goodness) so much as surviving some heinous stuff happening to them. This series needs to be read in order because these characters appear in earlier books and it’ll be confusing without that context.

Content warnings are crucial because if the darker elements including SA of Aavar on page. The build in the overarching storyline keeps driving me onward, even if the road got real bumpy this time. Onto the next.

I always wait until I read a few books from an author before I claim Favorite, but Etta Pierce is DEFINTELY a favorite! She's done it again with Persistence, and I absolutely am addicted to the world she's created that I want to know every single mate matching in this universe.

Bree and Aavar are perfect! And by perfect, I mean perfectly imperfect for each other. Aavar is damaged with half his tendrils and senti chopped from an attack that leaves him disfigured and his confidence in himself shattered. Bree is so headstrong and is exactly who he needs to remember that he is worthy, more worthy than any of those scumbags that jumped him. She is a determined mechanic learning the ways of the alien transports and wanting to make her own way in this new moon after being freed from the illegal human slavery/harem. She's a girl from the Bronx with an attitude and a heart of gold.

Type of alien: aquatic/tree swinging species. Males have four arms, females have two arms. They have a head full of tendrils which are like tentacles that have suckers on them when they are stimulated and can taste the salt water on human's skin which makes humans super tasty and easy to bond/mate with. There are more males than females in this society, and this has created a toxic relationship between females and males of this species.

Trigger warnings: abuse/rape/kidnapping/slavery

If you like alien romances where the world is rich, the characters are full, and the romance is heart warming and spicy this is the book for you. Start from the beginning of the series though, you won't regret it! Etta Pierce is a must read for alien romance lovers!

Another amazing book! What can I say, I'm Addicted to Etta Pierce's books. In this One, we have our mechanic, Breve and the pillot, Aavar. Breve os a human and Aavar a Shillpakaari like the doctor Erzra. Aavar looks like an easy going, shallow type of guy but when do this actually are the way they look? I was very surprised, this book is very intense and thera a lot of gut wrecking situations that just makes you love it even more. Breve os a true survivor! Wow She was amazing, you have to read it to trully know. Aavar... He is so much more that he looks and I already loved him so, now he is One of my favorites. I'm so curious about a lot of chatectheres now! Vindilus? The new refuges? Rose? Omg how many book? I hope a lot because I want all of their stories. I know, I'm very greedy. A must read for sure!

Another brilliant story Etta. At first you feel that Aavar is a typical jokester, coming off as a bit cocky with no follow through.. When he meets Bree he Is smitten.
Bree herself is dealing with her own demons and is far from wanting to start any kind of relationship. But he is not one to be deterred,. she finally gives in and agrees to a date with him to his colony. What started off as a perfect date turns horribly wrong when their transpo is shot down. Who knew that surviving being shot down and hunted by pirates would bring them closer than they ever thought possible. The horrors that they both had to endure just breaks your heart. But they never give up on one another. Determined, desperate and on deaths door. Sacrifices must be made.
A beautiful read with a HEA

Etta continues her fantastic series with her latest release Persistence. Filled with nonstop action, Pierce weaves her prose into a magical story of love and acceptance amid different races. The scene of the initial meeting between Rambir and Aavar is the sweetest read I have ever experienced. This endeared me to Aavar more so than any character I have read. Then he speaks to PomPom and I was over the moon for him. This book had me laughing, teary and in love. I never wanted it to end. Luckily there are more books on the horizon from this talented author and I look forward to reading everyone. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Okay, I skipped 2&3 in this one but I will be going back and reading them.
The tone of the 2 I read are completely different but with characters from the first show up (some of whom I adore) it really ties them together.
I felt that this one was much grittier.
She’s a hardcore New York gruff kinda gal.
He’s the sunshine with a past. And he’s so stinking sweet.
Slow burn.
Action.
Eye rolling moments.
I really enjoyed it.

Man. This was not a light and cheery book at all… but somehow the author managed to write it without making you feel like you’re reading something that makes you unsatisfied and hopeless.

And if it had been me, I would have curled up and died.

But this couple were both survivors and genuinely cared for one another, and the mmc stopped being a clown when he needed to step up.

And this fmc was the epitome of faking it til you make it, which I enjoyed watching pan out. First, in her job as a mechanic, then later on carrying through what she had to do— not give up.

So blissfully satisfying
This story has everything you're looking for. Drama, suspense, aliens, slow burn romance, and.....pirates! Yes, I said Pirates. And boy the villain in this one will make your blood boil. Aavar's bluster and projected arrogance always made me roll my eyes in previous books, but after diving into his backstory he becomes a freaking lovable. Bree is a harda**, who doesn't want help from anyone, and strives to reach her goals. Once she finally is forced to tear down some of those walls and reveal some vulnerability, that's when the magic happens. I can't wait to see what is in store for the rest of the colony and whatever else Etta dreams up.

I was happily reveling in this adorable slow burn, grumpy sunshine, alien romance, when the bottom fell out and this author jacked my anxiety to 1000 as the plot shifted gears into an epic crash landing alien jungle survival story with a soulmate level romance. Watching Bree and Aavar become the most badass versions of themselves in an effort to protect each other and survive… this is your brain on drugs. I couldn’t read fast enough. Pierce does NOT hold back on the high stakes and brutality of the world her characters are living in and her world building and magical ability to write cinematic level scenery just immerses you in the adrenaline fulled gritty mayhem that the characters are experiencing. I felt like I was in the jungle, sweaty, filthy, and running on fumes. I was holding my breath until everyone was safe and sound. I continue to be so impressed by this author, I don’t think she can write a bad book.

Series: Intersolar Union #4
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

Like the previous book, this continues with a darker theme, especially in the second half of the book. While a lot more action packed and emotional than I was expecting, I really enjoyed this book and this couple.

Bree was a spunky, determined, and resilient woman. I loved how she always said what she was feeling and didn’t hold back. Bree was an extremely resilient woman who survived a plane crash, surviving in a deadly jungle, and being kidnapped again all while dealing with intense and dangerous injuries. I liked that she was honest with herself throughout it and never gave up, she just kept fighting to survive.

Aavar has been the fun and annoying character so far in the series but we finally get to see the truth. Aavar desperately wants to be accepted and feel whole again after a tragic attack in his past. He may be goofy and fun, but he also hides a lot of hurt and pain under his smiles. Aavar was an extremely well written character and I really loved seeing him learn to accept himself and find love.

The first half of this book mainly focuses on getting to know these two, how they meet, and what they have been doing in the human colony since arriving. We get to learn more about the human colony, how it's changing, and more about the shilpakaari aliens culture. Also we get to see a new security force arrive with some very interesting characters, including the return of Vin and Pom Pom, who I love.

The second half of this book is where it gets darker and more intense. Bree and Aavar have to survive a plane crash, kidnapping, torture, and many dangerous wounds. It was a lot and very heartbreaking at times. I hated seeing Aavar fight his coil (mating) to their captor, Elaxi, who was a terrible woman who loved enslaving and raping other shilipakaari men. Because of how intense the situation was, Bree and Aavar’s relationship happens very quickly under stressful circumstances so we don’t get any really happy moments for them. I feel like we needed a little bit more happiness with these two to counter all the bad they dealt with, but I still enjoyed their story.

Overall, this was another great addition to this series. I am extremely interested in seeing what happens next and learn more about this corporation that is trying to kidnap the humans. Also I want more of Vin and Pom Pom because I love these two so much.

Trigger Warnings: references to human trafficking and past sexual slavery; kidnapping and torture; on page rape of the MMC (not by the FMC); blindness due to an injury; child illness (fictional leprosy); bullying; references to neglect and abandonment by parents; ostracization of people with disabilities or illness; violence

THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! This one was easily the best so far.

I LOVED Bree! I LOVED Aavar! I loved their interactions and banter and how their relationship grew over time. I love that they're both rough around the edges, two flawed people slowly sharing and revealing those flaws with one another and stronger together in their shared vulnerability. I love that their flaws are discussed or they begin to work on those flaws together by the end of the book. I love that the ending was a happy ending but also realistic given what they've been through and the work they both need to put in to themselves and the relationship.

The plot was great! It was pretty solid. Good balance of soft, sweet moments with action and story progression. Some additional worldbuilding as we learn more about how dangerous Yaspur and the galaxy at large can be and what assholes Shilpakaari kinda are.

Some new side characters are introduced (I'm a Sizzle fan and need more of him for sure) and the setup begins for the next book in the series, which I will be eagerly waiting for. In the meantime, I'll be switching over to the Over The Moon series about the colonists so I can read about Siatesh, also introduced in this book.

I liked the epilogue and the recognition that some long-term work needs to be done to rectify their sociocultural issues. I kinda like that these alien races aren't all perfect despite their technological advances as it definitely sets the stage for some interesting interactions once Earth is awoken (since there is a series planned about that, too). I really appreciate that science fiction has the ability to highlight real world issues in a new light and/or imagine a world where things are better.

Also, gotta add this bit because I was hollering out loud with Imani since SHE'S RIGHT! That's what I've been saying!! She's been living a rather privileged life with her special ops husband and his mega rich family.
“I don’t need your approval,” Vindilus said, hoisting a crate up with his bare hands. “I have Liv’s.”

“Olivia Atarian wasn’t sold into slavery and dropped in an alien jungle!” Imani roared, slicing her hand through the air. That brought all of us to heel. [...] “She might have the power to choose who can land, but we decide who can stay. A single fang out of line and you’re out.”

Yup, I said it last time didn't I? I'll think each book in this series is my favorite. Etta Pierce totally did it AGAIN. This book blew my mind, it was so different from the other books so far, yet it fit so well at this point in the series.

Persistence was an aptly chosen title for this book because it centers around Aavar. The goofy, loud, outgoing, and friendly Shilpakaari pilot we already see a little of in Vigilance. At first glance you might think that Aavar is a little shallow, with not much going on but the reality is very different. A lot of it is an act, both to protect himself and hide what he perceives as his deficits. Aavar is the most persistent character in this entire series, as he falls head over heels for Bree the moment he sees her and steadily manages to win her over throughout the book.

Bree is tough, plucky human who works and trains as mechanic. At first she thinks Aavar is mostly just annoying, especially because he keeps breaking his ship so that she will fix it. But he wins her over enough to go on a trip with him and when they land in some REALLY big trouble on the way back...

In short, fantastic world-building yet again. Amazing look into Shilpakaari culture that I enjoyed immensely. Tension went through the roof during the second part and the character growth, the persistence and perseverance displayed by both these characters was inspirational.

I CANNOT WAIT TO READ VIN's BOOK.

This book was SO INSANELY GOOD that I’m really struggling here.

Yeah, I loved the rascal alien who charms everyone, except he’s been pining for a human heroine who doesn’t have a clue. Yeah, I loved how compelling our alien hero’s insecurities were. Yeah, I loved how ridiculously compatible these two MCs were..

But this book was so much more than excellently executed tropes. It was the way common alien romance world-building elements (like an alien society with fewer women than men or alien matehood making peeps super horny for each other) were.. taken to the next level? Taken to their logical conclusion? Thoroughly and consistently applied to all aspects of alien social dynamics and psychology?

It was the way this author plots out these stories. The plot progressed the way a professional driver shifts gears—no forcing, no hiccups, until you’re driving 250km/h and you CANNOT STOP READING.

How did this book go from literally, actually, for-real for-real the cutest most heartwarming date I’ve ever read in any romance book.. to the most 😳 holy shitballs story of all time?? Smooth as butter, that’s how.

Persistence is book 4 in the Intersolar Union series and in it we are following human mechanic Bree and Shilpakaari chief pilot to the new human colony Aavar. The two have had this teasing, flirtatious banter back and forth almost since day one. Aavar would constantly find ways to be in Bree’s crosshairs whether that’s breaking things and asking her to fix it or simply bringing her coffee. After finding out about what happened to the humans (Bree included) on a previous ship, Aavar has backed off and has been treating Bree with more care….and Bree is tired of it. She misses the banter and him complimenting her ass (even though she rolls her eyes at him she secretly enjoys it) and she’s ready to let him know. But while these two are slowly starting to figure things out, an enemy is in the jungle and they want Bree.

This is my third year in a row starting the new year with Etta Pierce and oh my gosh I think this read is my favorite so far (which is saying something because I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by Etta). Returning to this series makes me giddy each and every time.

Oh my gosh I loved Bree and Aavar so freaking much. Like I said I think they are my favorite so far. They have this sweet, light hearted romance sizzling between them. They trust each other and are comfortable enough to discuss traumas and scars. There are these little moments that feel so intimate and you truly feel Aavar’s hope and devotion to Bree. Like she is all he sees. He is still dealing with feelings of unworthiness and shame due to an attack that left him with less tendrils (which makes him weak and undesirable to his people). But I loved every single time Bree was quick to step in both publicly and privately to remind him how worthy of her he is. Bree is so work driven and serious while Aaver is like this child at heart always playing with the human children, making a joke, or pulling pranks. He loves to make others smile and the two just bring out the best in each other.

Best one yet - would give more than 5 stars if I could! I took a few evenings off only because I didn't want the book to end (and I was staying up way too late already). Finished the last 60% all in one binge this morning.

Everything is amped up in this book, but also more cohesive - some "alien" terms are explained in more detail, and YESSSSS Amelia (heroine of last book) was smart enough to write a primer for the humans on shilpakaar biology & culture, with a special focus on mating. I'm glad that this was brought up so that we could know that Bree is empowered by the knowledge and knew what was happening to Aavar, rather than being cluelessly along for the ride.

This book is kind of tonally split in two, with the first half-ish being cute and flirty as Bree and Aavar clearing up some misunderstandings between them - Aavar had learned about the human's captivity in the last book and had changed his behavior toward Bree, but hadn't told her that he knew. Once that is cleared up they continue being cute as he takes her around the city on a shopping montage. But there's a big confrontation that cuts their time short and from there things take a sharp turn into action-ville.

I don't want to spoil the ending, but Bree is a total badass who saves herself, Aavar, and probably the whole human colony as well. At this point the reader already knows what Aavar is hiding under his happy-go-lucky personality, but he has to come to terms with it himself, and Bree has to find out as well. I liked the bit of turnabout where Bree, the female character, is the grumpy one and Aavar is our sunshine.

The use of side character POV continues to be well-done and used sparingly, giving me just enough to want to start the next one right away. The antagonists are varied and not totally black and white, and I'm glad that one of them seems to get a starring turn in a spin-off series. The overall smuggling/spying/hacking plot doesn't advance too far in this one, but there's some new detail introduced.

I feel like this review ran out of steam, but I really loved this book and this series and want to recommend it to anyone who loves some good sci-fi!

I can NOT get enough of these books!!
Etta has done it again with sucking me into this world on page one and giving me another couple that I just LOVE.
For those that are new to Etta, it is definitely best to read the ISU books up to #4 because it will help explain some things prior to the side series on Yaspur. Although I didn't (& yes, I got a little confused at first XD), Etta did a fantastic job by clarifying things with ISU books #1-4.
True to her amazing self, I've got another couple that is tied for my #1 favorite couple (we're not going to acknowledge how many have that spot by now XD).
Bree is a human that was rescued amongst the 1,000ish souls rescued by Olivia Loxley and Commander Atarian. Having to adjust to an alien moon far from home, it's a shock to her system. But she's stubborn and absolutely determined to make things work out in her favor. Which means dealing with insane odds against her while learning alien knowledge to do her job. She'll even run herself ragged to do it.
Aavar is such an interesting soul. I liked him when he was first introduced in previous books, but it was absolutely awesome to get better insight to him with this book. For someone that has endured some hard moments of his own, he has such a bright and bubbly personality. That bright light that can help make any hard situation better. Yet his determination to give Bree space after certain details come to light -- I absolutely respect that.
So when shit hits the fan and something intense threatens to destroy his chances of winning Bree over -- MAN. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!!! My emotions were all over the place as I was given Bree's POV and Aavar's. I literally could NOT relax until I got to the final page!
It was such a wild ride with even more things brought to light. I legit enjoyed every single moment of it, regardless of how much whiplash it gave me XD. Seeing how Bree sought to help build Aavar up rather than tear him down like his race tends to with people who have endured what he has...OMG yes <3
Fantastic job, Etta! Another book that is going to stick with me! I can't wait to read more on this world!!

Persistence is another impressive entry into the Intersolar Union Series that I really enjoyed as I found the feel of its truly unique alienness to be an integral part of its engaging narrative.
There is an overarching storyline, so it does help to have read previous books in the series to get some additional historical background into this 4th stand-alone entry.

With the humans who were rescued from slavery by the Union now being relocated to the safety of planet Yasper new friendships as well as relationships are beginning to be forged.
Playful Shilpakaari chief pilot Aavar Medansh soon finds himself attracted to mechanic in training
Bree Stewart and although she is a little leery of his effusive personality, she doesn’t not like Aavar and after finally agreeing to go on a date with him their time together will take an unexpected and dramatic turn bringing both closeness and a fight for survival into their lives.
Some things do not change, and humans are still considered a prime commodity in this new universe they find themselves in and Bree has been singled out.

The world building is phenomenal; the characterizations unique and fascinating with many alien cultures and species represented bringing a nuance of burgeoning reality to the reader’s appreciation of the story. There is plenty of suspense, action and adventure flowing through the pages that kept me held in anticipation of Aavar and Bree’s outcome as well as keeping me emotionally engaged in their plight.
Love truly does conquer all and the reader will be truly transported to another place and time as they find themselves immersed in this exceptionally well-crafted Sci-Fi Romance story.

I received an ARC copy of this book as well as purchasing a retail copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
