*Reread 8/18/2022* This volume makes me so sad and conflicted because the wife is so cool and badass so I hate that Akitora is cheating on her, but I also want to see Rogi and Akitora happy together. I am curious about what happens to the wife though because she's not present at all in the fourth head. I don't remember if she's even mentioned so like that could mean nothing, but it also makes me a little nervous.
I think everything that I was confused about before is starting to come together better in my head. I misread and really didn't understand a lot before, but I think I get what the Yakuza drama part is about though. Although I do find the things and reasons they do things odd and I'm still not 100% sure what the plan is and what it's fully meant to accomplish. Everything is very twisted and I think that's attributed to Akitora's and Rogi's reckless personalities. Their dynamic is so interesting because as they mentioned in the story they both seem like idiot kids just having fun.
I think it's cute that Asami treats Rogi basically like a son. It's so funny and I love it for Rogi because what he really wants most out of Akitora is a family. That's why he's so desperate to join his Yakuza family. It makes the relationships so much more complicated and it also makes Rogi's actions in fourth head seem even more childish. More like a child getting back at a parent instead of a lover getting revenge, but it's clear that Rogi does have romantic feelings for Akitora. Akitora's feelings are a little more difficult to place down. Clearly he holds affection for his wife and I don't think he would ever replace or leave her and with Rogi it's more like he wants to own him, because he's hard to pin down. However there's also this connection he feels because Rogi is so similar to him in their thought process and how he can keep up with him. I am starting to wonder about the ages though because Asami refers to Rogi as a kid, but if he and Asoda went to school together that would make them the same age, but Asoda obviously reads older than the early-mid 20s I read Rogi as. So maybe Asami and Tora are in their 30s? Not that it matters, but I wish they'd just say so I could properly pin down timelines.
Anyway I just wanted to process my thoughts. I think this series is a huge spiderweb of things that as I was reading I had a hard time appreciating it which is why that as I read further and could sit back and look at it, it ended up becoming a favorite. There are so many different parts at play and interesting relationship dynamics. It's a really interesting series and idk it just hits.
*Original Review 9/20/2020* Orignal rating:3 stars Akitora looks a lot like Daisuke Kambe and that's all I could think about.
I really like the wife and I want her to be happy so all the stinky dudes need to fuck off.
I read Beriko's books in a random ass order and took too much time in between reading the fourth head and this so I'm kind of confused at this point and just along for the ride.
I loved this one slightllllllly less than the first volume, but it was still an entertaining read! I love that it's both playful and serious at the same time. Yes, it's a very explicit BL lolllll but it also has one hell of a storyline going for it as well!
Some of the yakuza stuff goes over my head, but the meat of this volume is the fascinating dynamic between Asami, Uichi, and Yatora. Asami is such a cool woman that I wish Yatora isn't cheating on her. It doesn't help that Uichi is so hard to root for. His one defining trait is being a loose cannon and that's not much to work with. Also, it bothers me how he never seems to be affected by the horrible things inflicted upon him. I have to side with Asoda: he's bad news.
I have so many words and feelings for this volume but so little way in which to express it. I found myself really liking all of the characters and their development more. Especially the wife-- oh my goodness, she's my favorite by far and I aspire to be just like her. This is still a really dark story however with quite a few really dark characters, but it bothers me less than before. The wife has certainly become my comfort character, aha. And I really loved seeing how domestic they all are-- and to be honest, I got so absorbed in it all that I forgot it was in the past, and in current times Rogi has a daughter and a...pet human for her. I still would really like to see how both time periods play out, I'm quite invested in the majority of these characters now. Scarlet Beriko-sensei is quite skilled at writing, I must say. And I will most certainly read this volume again someday. But yeah, I just love the wife and how she handles things and how she processes things. I wish I was so, so much more like her. She does all the right things and just retains her pride but her compassion as well. I can't say she's not a bitch, but... she's the best kind of bitch and I just love the kind of person she is to bits.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this series. It's brutal, absolutely not a romance (as the SuBLime imprint may suggest), and I don't really like any of the characters. But I also feel compelled to know what happens. So I guess literary Stockholm Syndrome?

Trigger warnings: Violence, Blood, Rape, Gang Rape, Cheating
Okay, so I'm so conflicted in my thoughts on this series. It's about a yakuza leader who starts an obsessive love with a promiscuous damaged man. I am not even sure where to start with this review.
I'm trying to stay neutral in this review, but non con really doesn't work for me. It makes sense, because these characters are damaged and corrupt people. Outside of that I found the mob/yakuza jargon tiresome. I read this in a few sittings because I just couldn't connect to this.
I love the art, Scarlet Beriko is quite a talented artist. Their art is dynamic and gorgeous. I also loved Akitora's wife: Asami. She was absolutely fantastic! She's a stay at home mom with an attitude. Don't mess with her, or you'll end up in a ditch. Is it bad that I liked her more than the couple? Can I just have a manga about her?
I really wanted to love this story, but I can't lie, I didn't. The characters are physically beautiful, and completely damaged. I'm debating on getting volume three out of curiosity. If you like a dark romance yakuza stories and the triggers don't bother you, give it a try. It just wasn't for me.
The characters are interesting and this affects their dynamics too. Uichi (MC) and Akitora (ML?) don’t seem like they have anything in common at first but as the story progresses, more of themselves are revealed and it turns out that they’re more alike than expected. The people around Akitora, such as his wife Asami (yup the man has a wife and child, and his mistress is a twink 😂) and Asoda (his personal aide) are not thrilled with Uichi’s appearance in their lives but what can they do? Asami is surprisingly quite open minded about her husband’s extramarital affairs but it doesn’t mean that she likes it. And Asoda is really wary of Uichi and believes that nothing good will come from Akitora’s involvement with him. When they’re all in a room together they make an odd bunch but I think time will tell if they’ll all be able to make it to the end in one piece. After all, they are yakuza.
Youtube|Instagram|Twitter
Bello, intrigante e sorprendente!
I left a review for the first volume, which sums up my feelings for this one as well. The story is not un-enjoyable, but there are a lot of icky parts that didn't really do it for me. Also, the story tries to a little too hard to have a plot and that made it confusing. This series is a prequel to the 4th Generation Head manga by the same author, which I probably should have figured out sooner, but didn't.
ALL THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.. the the drama is SO GOOD.
Ok. still recovering from the stab wound, A kind of settles in to realizing how truly unhinged R is. He has zero need or want for self preservation when it comes to getting what he wants. I would say is definitely untreated/undiagnosed. Others call him a child and I can see that. But it is more than being immature. R is getting completely used for his intelligence but he can't see past his singular obsession.
Ahh this one is so hard to review cause on one hand, cheating arcs piss me off bit it's more of a polyship at the end, and I also loathe the yakuza/violent angle but like, that's the plot so there's no surprise, and the art style is GORGEOUS as always. Just....a little confused on the Hachi storyline. Hopefully it changes in volume 3.
Another great volume in an amazing series. The art is still gorgeous, the cast is still wonderful, and every new thing we learn about them is amazing. The character relationships are excellent. It's funny and angsty and just all around wonderful. Looking forward to volume 3.
