Which Upon

Rate this book
Since the Great War between elves and beings, the Dyr kingdom has remained in poverty because of a particularly awful, magic-weaving villain. Or at least, that’s what Dusk lets them believe. Vexed by the king’s ignorance about his beings, she plays the part of ‘wicked witch’ to create a charming and intelligent hero out of the prince. However, when a mysterious Clubs kingdom councilmember arrives for help, the villainous deeds turn more impulsive and complicated. They are led to uncover siren murders, a new addictive drug, vanishing halflings and something much more sinister.

In this tale, who is the real villain?

“You are magnificent.” He swallowed. The words caressed her like a touch. “More than any flower or jewel.”

I devoured this book! The use of using fairytales to build on world building, stories, and characters is so creative and really drew me in.

Dusk’s story was a bit confusing to me for the first few chapters, and a lot of characters are introduced very early on which can be a lot to take in, but otherwise, this story has me hooked! The chemistry between Dusk and Oak was palpable from the beginning and only became stronger as the story continued. Dusk is such a well-written character, her backstory and how that affects her life and relationships with others was done so well.

I personally don’t like Red, nothing wrong with the writing of the character, I just find her incredibly annoying. Maybe that’s what we’re supposed to feel and the author has done a really good job at writing her, who knows.

I’m still trying to figure out why the book is called Which Upon and not Witch Upon, but I guess I’m just a bit slow. Dusk and Oak just work so well together, I love them. I can’t wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed this book, the creativity of mixing fairy tales with new stories and characters really intrigued me. The story flowed well and had enough angst, action and a little romance to enjoy the book and finish it within a couple of days.

The familiarity of the fairytales helped in the world building throughout the book and I think that the descriptions allowed me to picture the different settings the events took place and imagine each character. With the new characters added from stories we have read the story became more exciting. It was especially cool to see the perspective of the perceived villains and I look forward to seeing how this plays out in the next book.

I also think overall that although the world building was good, but a lot of characters are introduced in the first chapters which can be a bit tricky to keep track of until you understand the world a little more (especially the nicknames 🤪) This didn’t stop me from following the plot and getting fully immersed in the story.

I definitely still have some questions and want to learn more about the world and it’s characters. I can’t wait to see what happens in the continuation of the series.

Wonderfully creative and addictive characters! The twisted Fairytale element was pretty subtle so when characters were mentioned it felt kind of exciting and blended extremely well into the story. I hope there's a next one :)

This is the kind of book you can’t put down. The absolute chemistry between the characters from the very beginning is just delicious. Dusk’s character is alluring from the start and her development through the book is overall enjoyable. I also love that while all the romance and fantasy draw you in this book speaks to bigger issues like poverty and power. The nicknames are so cute and the ‘😏’ scenes don’t feel forced like some other books. They flow so well and are very enjoyable hehe

What a read! The world built in my mind from the descriptions is absolutely incredible and I fell for the characters so wonderfully! Through it all you will be guessing who is the true villain and true hero, and in the end you will still be surprised!
I can't wait for the next book!

Wonderful take on classic fairy tale characters and taking them in a new twisting direction.
Was hooked from the beginning and couldn't wait to see where the next turn would take me to the point I read this is one sitting. I can't wait for the rest of the series to be published and see where the story will go.

The story was great and always kept me on the edge of my seat. It was so full into the mysterious but was still romantic and just all of my favourite things. I loved it. I will say it probably won't be for everyone, since the romance isn't the most forward theme in the book. But every theme is intertwines so nicely and the ending was amazing. I can't wait for more.

I received this audiobook at no-cost from AdoptAnAudiobook.com. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

There's a lot of fairy tale themes blended into this world. Some go with names of the characters or themes in their life's events. Like Hook and Peter and their taverns. Red and Wolf along with others. I'd love to compare names and connections with you. I had fun seeing the connections and references to the fairy tales, and looked forward to reading more of them as the book unfolded.

Dusk is our main female character here. She had me curious at the beginning. It appeared she's the witch and the villain of the story. (I do love a good villain.) But there was something...just a little more to her. I was picking up on other things in her thoughts.

Can a character be both, a villain and one that helps? That's what drew me to Dusk even more. The crafting of her actions. And she's my damaged kind of character.

Dusk lives with the consequences of her actions along with her mother's past. She's a witch, after all. So she's built her own barriers to protect herself, even from her adoptive family.

Then Willoak, or Oak as friends call him, comes along.

Yes, this has a romance that happens and is for adults with a few scenes.

Oak has his own reason for being in Dyr kingdom, from his kingdom - Clubs. He's a fun main male character to balance Dusk. He's also a halfling. That's part of the game between him and Dusk, what type of halfling is he? We will find out in the end. And I think I love him even more!

Dusk has her own internal struggles and journey to go on, which happens in this book with the events that unfold and happen. I loved that the movement of the story kept going forward and the events kept the story interesting as Dusk learns about how she is handling things.

The narrator is a lovely voice. I enjoyed listening to her. All is clear and clean.

I did love the ending as well. I want to continue with this series and see how others continue to do in the world.

I am so confused at what is happening. Scenes change at the weirdest times and nothing flows. I keep having to go back thinking I skipped in the audiobook but no, that’s just how it’s written.
