As WWII rages, paratrooper Clyde Cooper sets sail for Panama. Expecting to be reunited with his cousin, Shawn, Clyde instead arrives to find his patriotic cousin missing. The Army brass share only scant information regarding Shawn’s last known whereabouts. Is he a casualty of war? Or is the military purposefully covering up his fate?
Meanwhile, back at home, Abigail struggles to escape her overbearing father and visits an old friend in Texas who is a pilot for the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS). Before joining herself, Abby returns home to tie up loose ends. But when her friend uncovers dangerous shortcuts at her father’s factory, Abby is swept into a different kind of fight.
And on the other side of the world Clyde’s brother Frank finds himself settling into the brutal life of a POW. Captured by the Japanese, each day is a bloody battle to survive. A battle that Frank is not sure he can fight much longer…
As the war burns on, Clyde and his loved ones must confront deception, death, and destruction. But when the smoke clears, what will be left of their family?
The author is fulfilling a grand vision of telling stories of WWII. He has a good imagination and the narrative keeps the readers interest. I think he would have done well to get more input from people who had actually been there. His descriptions of actions and peoples reactions are entertaining but lack realism. Someone should have pointed out that smokeless gunpowder was invented long before WWII and that not many people throw up every time something happens. Just sayin'. Anyway, I will continue to read the series and suggest that the glitches aren't enough to steer one away.
Excellent addition to the series! After reading/listening to A Time to Serve I knew I was addicted to this series and A Gathering Storm has provided a necessary fix to this addiction. I noticed in this book I was finding myself making comments to Clyde, Shawn, and Frank. Some of these comments were supportive and there were other times I wanted to provide a swift kick in the backside. Of course, the stories from home figure prominently in this book, and we get to follow Abigail in her adventures as she adjusts to being on her own more than before with only sporadic communications with Clyde. Once again Scott Graff’s narration not only brings each character to life but makes listening to the story to an elevated level. If you read or listened to A Time to Serve, you really need to read or listen to A Gathering Storm. If you are new to this series start with book 1 otherwise you will miss the foundation for what occurs in this book. I received an Advance Reader Copy of the eBook and a review copy of the audiobook from the publisher and chose to provide this review.
This book is such an amazing sequel to “The Gathering Storm”. Both books are extremely captivating and tell the historical events from a unique perspective. The only thing I disliked from this book, was the inclusion of infidelity within the military lifestyle. It is such an overused stereotype and I can’t stand it. Other than that inclusion of unnecessary drama, it really is a great read!
Finished this book in a day - second book in “A Time to Serve” series, a WWII historic fiction story about the Cooper family. The war continues and the family is strung across the globe - Clyde, a paratrooper, is serving the the Pacific while his wife, Abby, decides to support the war as a pilot in the WAfS. Frank remains a POW in the Philippines while his cousin is brought into the OSS. Loving this story and moving onto book 3!
There is so many twist and turns sometimes it is hard to keep up. But it is impossible to put these books down. The characters are great especially the 3 kinsman who each have a different viewpoint. Abby is a prize she is so out there with everything she does and bull headed. Pick up book one today.
Received an ARC of this book and could not put it down. More than a sequel of the COOPER family during WWII, this book brings out the human side and family turmoils that were common during the war. Cannot wait for the next installment. Chris Glatte has done it again!!
Set during WWII follows brothers and wife of Clyde alternating chapters. I had a difficult time putting it down and was shocked when it ended on such a cliffhanger. I didn't realize it was a sequel.
I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. This is another great book in this series. The action continues with various characters throughout the book. The characters are believable and keep the reader interested in their stories. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Enjoyed the story very much. The characters are growing on me. Would be interesting to build more on the characters - prison guard Bashful and Abby’s friend Trish, in the next book of this series.
Mr. Glitter writes a well researched story which keeps the reader interested in the story and does a good job of keeping the different characters in a way that they add to the flow of the story. This series can be enjoyed by anyone who likes world war 2 stories.
The intrigue in the civilian life a!most Match the action in he war story attached to it. The pow story is not as detaai?ed I. The latter part of the book. Enjoyable way to spend time.
While deserving of five stars, the foolish escapades of the heroine derived from unbelievable curiosity is too naive for the serious plot. The other characters are consistent with the subject matter of the story.
This is a fantastic on going series. It follows several people during World War II both state side and in different area of Asia. The action is at times very dramatic. As a book ends I look forward to the next one.
I couldn't wait and have now started #3. Very good told from 3 different family members, four if you count spouses and five if you count parents too. Great depictions, I feel like I am right there with each one.
This book will hold your attention from the beginning of the story right to the end. It makes you want to read the next book as soon as it is available.
There were a few slow pages in this book. Mainly due to what was going on with Abby, family, and friends back home. Still good and easy to get involved with what the soldiers were doing.
