Born and raised in the South African bush, Raymond Cowles developed early a love of living things and an extraordinary power of observation. His youthful experiences with African reptiles led ultimately to his pioneering work on reptilian thermoregulation - the various mechanisms by which such cold-blooded creatures respond to the daily and seasonal fluctuations in the temperature of their environment. These far-reaching studies and his infectious enthusiasm established him with peers and students alike as a major figure in modern zoology.
