I enjoyed reading this!

Though I confess in the beginning I was totally concerned I wouldn't because I felt there was a lot thrown at the reader about the world and got overwhelmed by the info dump. *nervous laughter* I also went in thinking it would hit different villainess trope beats, but the beginning matches a lot of other villainess trope manga I've read before. However, I'm REALLY glad I kept reading because this solidly stood on its own as having its own unique flair in that genre!

Interestingly enough, I noticed I started to become "invested" or pulled into the story when Claire notices a certain knight is actually female and not male. I realize that is such a small thing to have a story pull you in, but Snow White with the Red Hair is currently the only shojo manga I know that has a female knight.

Saying that, I thought it to be really exciting and found a lot of comparisons between the two series because like Shirayuki, Claire isn't one to let others make decisions for her. She stands on her own two feet and makes her own decisions concerning her future, which was something I really appreciated about this manga. Rather depending on her royalty or anyone else's, she chooses to go get a job and be able to make a life for herself with her own two hands. She also doesn't complain about the sudden loss of royalty, nor does she refuse to never think about her family. It may hurt, but I was glad to see that she still thought of them at random times and genuinely wanted the best for them. It was refreshing!

And speaking of jobs, get this, she becomes ! I have never seen that in a manga, and it reminded me of old historical romance novels I use to read, which I thought was pretty cool!

I also really liked the side characters and appreciated the subtle magic that's woven in, but not playing a huge role just yet. I'm also digging that she's really not the typical "villainess" and actually felt really sorry for her because most of these stories I've read in this genre, the villainess WAS mean. Claire on the other hand wasn't really like that before she came into this world.

Lastly, as "Claire" tells her college-friend, sweets are better than alcohol. One of the best lines ever!

While I felt uncertain if I would like this volume in the beginning, I found myself to be pulled in and very intrigued. I enjoyed all of the characters and 100% here for the potential romance! I think if you like Snow White with the Red Hair and villainess isekai stories, this is a good one to give a try!

Good characters that are very interesting. Plot wise to me. It doesn’t feel different but all the characters are intriguing and I want to learn more.

This is a librarian review. I try to leave notes on books I’m considering for a middle school library for others in the school library profession because manga is hardly ever professionally reviewed for us to properly vet before buying. I mainly just look for troublesome issues for younger ages, such as sexual content, language, or extreme violence. I also leave other mentions and notes further down.

Rating:
This book is rated for teens.

Language:
There was no harsh language, which is very nice!

Sexual Content:
So far there is nothing major. There's no overly revealing clothing, inappropriate jokes, or sexualized characters. There is mention of Claire's father having a mistress and illegitimate child before her mother passes away. (That half-sister becomes the villainess rival). There's also a moment when the love interest, a prince, climbs onto Claire's balcony to see her where she's now working as a governess. When she invites him in, he's shocked for a moment to be invited into "a woman's bedroom," as it's not proper etiquette. Nothing happens, however; he came to offer her enrollment in the royal academy. Interesting way to do so, Romeo.

Alcohol:
The main character is of age and has occasional alcohol. In the real world, she's a college student, and wine is ordered for her party at an inn. She's also offered Sangria. No one gets drunk or acts inappropriately.

Final thoughts:
Other reviews will give a more clear idea of what the story is about. I just wanted to search for the above to see if this volume was appropriate enough for middle grades. Considering how tempered the content is and how wholesome her relationship with the prince seems to be so far, I don't think there's anything to worry about for at least 7th and 8th grade, though it is rated 13+. The story is a bit melodramatic and cliche, but it still hooks you.

It’s following a few familiar tropes - born into an Otome game, get dumped by long time fiance (a prince, of course), leave home and meet another prince, etc etc. I was annoyed at a very big detail that is incorrect. It says their family title is matrilineal…therefore it passes through the female line. Yet it turns out her mother was from a foreign place, and her father had an illegitimate daughter with his mistress that appears to be taking her place. Look….if the title passes through the female line, it would not go to a half sister that doesn’t share the mom’s blood. Additionally, KH talks about how she has to take the initiation test to a place she was connected to - since unbeknownst to her, the mom was from Lindel, her power was initially deemed very weak. BUT if her dad is from the other country, why doesn’t she have a connection to the land through him? Or for that matter, through herself because she was born and raised on this land?

I don’t get her family. They were wonderful until recently, then the dad and oldest brother turned into assholes, and the second bro stops being competitive and is nice to her? Could that be because he knows he did something wrong when he let Charlotte convince him to dispose of his mom’s letter. I would assume he should be aware that if the letter says to take the test in Lindel, that’s the reason for her failure. It’s just weird all around that they turned on her so fast.

I feel that most readers of the Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter may find themselves enjoying Formerly, the Fallen Daughter of the Duke as well. Much like Iris, from AotDD, the main character of this one, Claire, is quite cute, self-made, and likable as well.
Having been framed for actions she did not commit as well as being sabotaged by her rival, Claire casts aside the family that only serves to betray her and decides to drop her father’s family name, take up her late mother’s maiden name, and traverse to the North in search of purpose, ideally someplace where she is most useful.
She had an idea in mind but those ideas were thwarted when she met a handsome prince and caravan along the way (though she thought of them simply as nobles, not royalty until learning otherwise). Having learned the North is a dangerous place right now, she chooses to stay with her newfound companions, accepting their invitation to follow them.
I can tell that Vik and Claire will be a couple to fall in love quickly, much like Shirayuki and Zen from Snow White with the Red Hair. But complications may arise involving their lineages, their track records, pasts, powers, government, and other scenarios. There’s a lot of opportunities in this manga and a lot of good set up and I look forward to how it progresses.

Claire is a rival character in an otome game and she's already getting her bad ending. Sometimes she dreams of being a college girl whose roommate is playing that otome game, but which world is real - or maybe both - is unclear.

This is a very pretty addition to the "otome game is real" shoujo manga trend. All the major characters have distinct appearances and Claire's clothing changes with her status in life. There's some really nice scenery too.

The magic system isn't fleshed out in the first volume other than how people receive their magic and power levels. There's a ritual with the water of a sacred fountain and the color the water shines reflects how strong they are. Silver and white are best but Claire gets light pink, which is very low tier and unheard of for her family.

After a rough start, everything coincidentally goes very well for Claire. This is a relaxing read, not dramatic or stressful at all. Some readers will be bored to tears, others will love it.

3.5, but it feels like we're missing a lot in the novel-to-manga adaptation and one truly horrific anachronistic costume issue, so until Goodreads gives us half stars, I'm rounding down. There are some very interesting possibilities with the isekai element and I'm looking forward to the release of the source novel.

EDIT: After sleeping on it, I'm very excited by the possibility that this story could have links to one of my favorite books, Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer. Even the names are there - in Farmer's novel, Charlotte swaps places with Clare in her sleep. (And time periods.) Now I REALLY can't wait for the light novel to track this more closely!

Pros: This manga has an interesting take on the isekai genre, at least one I haven’t seen before. Even though it’s reincarnated as the villainess with an evil sister who gets with the crown prince fiancé (very common isekai tropes that I’m a complete sucker for), she’s not suddenly like—“Gasp! I woke up and remember my past life and oh no I’m the villainess and I need to SURVIVE!” It’s revealed in small chunks through dreams, but it maintains a mystery as it makes the readers wonder which life is the dream.

Cons: Lui and Prince Asbert look pretty much the same with their identical hairstyles. Some of the plot points could be a bit predictable at times, but then again, it is using a lot of popular isekai tropes. Also the ML was a bit creepy

This series has all the elements needed to be great, but the pacing is a little off. There are a lot of typical tropes - MC/villainess deposed by the lovely heroine who later turns out to be manipulative and a bit evil; miscommunications with love interests who later realise that she was wonderful all along and switch their affections, a slightly confused/unexplained isekai element that randomly pops up throughout the 1st and 2nd volume... But. Then it really kicks off in the 3rd and 4th volume as all of those elements come together with some good tension/stakes. I'm excited to see where it goes after volume 5 because I'm now properly invested in the MC's journey/decisions. The love story is a little blasé, but the fantasy universe and storyline is strong enough to carry the series.

Can’t say that I’ve actually read a manga, so this is kind of a new experience for me. The story has had an interesting start, and I can’t wait to get to the next part. We start out with Claire, who is about to get her powers soon And they expect her to be pretty powerful. She’s engaged to the crown prince of her country. Her mother died when she was young. Her father had a mistress. That mistress had a child. And when the mistress died, the child came to live with them. Her name was Charlotte. And Charlotte apparently had it out for Claire and ruined her life and stole her fiancé. So Claire has decided to take her chances in the world alone. And she starts to realize that there were things about her life that had been kept from her. Like I said, can’t wait to start volume 2.

A really fun manga about a girl who is isekai-ed (but doesn't know until much later) and gets the bad ending (her step-sister is a bitch who plotted and planned her whole life to steal everything of her sister, including ruining her magic initiation) but tries to make the best of it and I love how she didn't give up and made her own life, with her own friends, and a potential love interest (or well, she doesn't have much interest in him now but I can see the ship in the distance, haha). She is so strong and I love that she is now balancing work and school, curious to see how this one will continue! Will she really get her happy ending, what about those flashbacks that told her of her past life, and how strong is her magic really?
The art is also very lovely~

A fantasy romance about a put upon heroine, with bonus isekai elements. The isekai elements are actually used really sparingly, which is kind of interesting. I just wish the heroine weren't so totally selflessly perfect, and that things didn't keep falling neatly into her lap. She doesn't just get rescued by a knight, she gets rescued by the crown prince of a neighboring kingdom. She isn't merely more powerful than she'd thought, she's likely more powerful than anyone else on her world. And while she does have a wicked half sister, she never actually experiences her wickedness in person. It's pure wish fulfillment, but it isn't terrible wish fulfillment.

This was another cute little shojo manga that also kind of reminded me in some respects of "Snow White with the Red Hair". I was reading some of the other reviews and apparently this story uses the video game being possibly real trope. Which really helped cleared some stuff up for me because I felt a little confused on that aspect of the story. I also don't think the magic system was quite fleshed out here. However, I am interested and seeing where this story goes for the next few volumes before I decide if I am going to continue the story or now. I don't think the first volume is always fair. Either way another cute volume that was a delight to read this afternoon.

Decent start

A decent start, the characters are likable without any annoying swooning. I'd have liked to avoid the "my rival is a scheming saboteur" and the otome isekai tropes as it really adds nothing other than a plot reveal and cheapens the world building for me by making characters preprogrammed NPCs. Other than that, it gives me Snow White with Red Hair vibes, which is a good thing.

I can't get enough of these villainess isekai mangas...this one has a more unique premise of claire seemingly straddling two worlds at once (she seems to sometimes flash-back to the modern world, during times she loses consciousness in the isekai world). it also is giving me very strong shirayuki/zen vibes, but isn't too close of a copy to make it boring. I like all the setup here and am really interested to know where this is going!!

Review based on a digital copy from TokyoPop!

I really enjoyed this first installment. It is an interesting premise and was able to shape the world of the story without being bogged down by exposition.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and I like the way their relationships are being developed. Simply wonderful and delightful.

I feel like this volume was mostly set-up, and that the story proper is going to start in volume 2, which isn't available yet. And even when it is published it might not be available for free via subscription like this one, and I don't know if I like the story enough to spend money on it. That would depend on how good volume 2 is, which I can't know right now. It's a conundrum.

Cute Fluff

It’s cute and quick to read. Wished it was a bit longer, but it’s still good. The story is generic and overly done. Otherwise, I still have plans to read the next volume. In short, it’s a cute story.

Very cute and fun! I love that the ML isn't just here to solve all of the MC's problems. I also love that the way the Isekai-plot is introduced is new. I haven't seen it used like this before, and even though it isn't a lot so far, I hope it continues to be a plot device moving forward.

Sneaky isekai

I like the story so far but I confess I'm tired of the selfish/evil heroin streaming other People's fiances through lies and deceit.i just don't like bad people being rewarded for bad behavior....

I really enjoyed this manga. It has been sitting and waiting for me for a while. So glad I finally picked it up. I love how it switches back and forth (I won't say what it switches back and forth from; no spoilers). I'm interested to see what unfolds in this story.
