'Sometimes dying was the only way to give life.'

I just love Jody Hedlund's medieval series. She has quite a few and I devour them the moment I get them. This fifth offering in her Knights of Brethren series is so good. The item the knights are seeing now is the Holy Light. And it's quite a story. It would be too easy to give a spoiler, so I won't say too much, but it certainly captivated me. I can't wait for the last in the series! So exciting!

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.

If you haven’t read Jody Hedlund’s books yet, you’re seriously missing out! I have greatly enjoyed her Knights of Brethren series so far, and Enflamed is a sweetly romantic story with elements of danger and intrigue. I appreciated that both Espen’s and Sylvi’s struggles with self-worth and confidence were relatable and portrayed realistically. It feels like Enflamed and the final book in the series, Entrusted, will be more interconnected than the others, so I hope we get to learn more about Sylvi and Espen in that book. And believe me, I am eagerly awaiting Kristoffer’s story! 4.5/5 stars

I love this series by Jody Hedlund. I love following these brave knights as they strive to accomplish their quest and watching them fall in love. I liked how Espen would do anything to protect those he loves especially Sylvi. I like that Sylvi did whatever she could to change her fate. I liked how they were both courageous and did some difficult things. I liked how they worked together and fell in love. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Ohh I’m so in love with this series and book 5 was another hit for me! All of these books are filled with action, intrigue, and breathtaking romance. Do yourself a favor and read them!

The story of the Knights of Brethren continues in Enflamed and this time we get to follow Espen on his quest for the Holy Light. Espen grew up like a brother to his friend Kristoffer. He has secretly been in love with Kris’s sister, Sylvi for some time and Sylvi is attracted to Espen as well. They both are fighting their feelings for each other because they each have no idea that the other feels the same way.

There is a lot of struggle with self worth for both Espen and Sylvi. Sylvi thinks that others have only seen her as a pretty face instead of the smart women she is and Espen struggles with feeling worthy of Sylvi. This was so real and relatable. We get to watch them grow through that together each learning their true value. Very beautiful to read! It’s really hard not to love Espen. He is so sweet, noble, and brave. Everytime he says Aye my heart melted.

I’m a sucker for friend to lover stories so I really enjoyed this one. Each of Jody’s books is so unique and creative. No one writes a swoony and sizzling romance like her! Espen and Sylvi were so good together. They respect and love each other so much! There were also so many well developed secondary characters that jumped off the page. Loved Espen’s dad and I could just feel his smile so big at the wedding.

Jody knows how to hold her readers from beginning until the end. This book was full of action with Sylvi’s evil father and uncle which made things very interesting! Definitely put this series on your list!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you have been following along in these tales of the Knights of Brethren, you will be familiar with the name of Espen. Like the other Knights of Brethren, Espen is quite the accomplished warrior with skills that many others can only dream of having. Espen and Kristoffer have been best friends since they were children when Espen went to live with the Prestegard family. Sylvi is Kristoffer’s sister. Like little sisters often do, she tagged along wherever the two boys went. Although she and Espen were more like siblings as children, they both secretly admired the other at one time or another. Espen and Kristoffer have been charged by their king to find the holy lamp which supposedly has the power to help them defeat the Dark Warriors. I enjoyed their verbal jousting over who will find the lamp first. Rather unexpectedly, the action turns to other concerns as Espen is caught up in trying to help Sylvi avoid an undesirable marriage to a powerful man who only wants her as his wife because of her great beauty. The story is packed full of new twists in almost every chapter. I enjoyed the excitement and the many challenges faced by Espen and Sylvi. I have not decided which of the characters I disliked the most, whether Lord Prestegard, his brother Vilhelm, or Lord Grimsrud who was the unsavory character chosen by Lord Prestegard to marry Sylvi. I found good reasons to dislike all three of them. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

“’Tis a difficult thing to understand. But ’tis always possible for even the smallest light to illuminate darkness and defeat it.”

Another fabulous edition to the Knights of Brethren series with one of the most gorgeous covers I’ve ever seen! This is Espen’s story and I have to admit, I couldn’t wait to see what his story would be like. This is a friends to more/best friend’s little sister/marriage of convenience romance. Along with the swoony kisses, and those romantic tension-filled scenes is the quest for the holy lamp. I loved the imagery with the holy lamp and the religious aspects included in the story. As always, Jody Hedlund masterfully weaves faith through her stories in a subtle, enjoyable way.

With each book in the series, there’s the underlying threat of forces amassing to battle against the King of Norvegia. King Ansgar and his fellow Knights of Brethren are determined to seek holy relics to help them defeat their enemies. But, there are possible traitors in their midst and as Espen and Kristoffer embark on their separate quests for the holy lamp, new enemies are discovered.

Sylvi is Kristoffer’s little sister and has been in love with Espen since they were children. She mistakenly believes Espen only thinks of her as a little sister. With her uncommonly beautiful looks she’s underestimated and treated as unintelligent. However, there’s more to Sylvi than meets the eye and when her father arranges an unwanted marriage for her she decides to stow away on Espen’s ship and follow him on his quest.

Espen has loved Sylvi for as long as he can remember, but as a humble fisherman’s son, he doesn’t feel worthy of her. He painstakingly adopts a brotherly attitude towards her all the while fighting his feelings. He truly appreciates her beyond her beauty and will do anything to protect her, including marry her to save her from her father’s evil machinations. As danger lurks from all quarters, will they be able to find the holy lamp before it’s too late and escape from her father’s clutches?

I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between Espen and Sylvi. There were so many swoony moments like when he removes her pins and combs through her hair for her. *sigh* I also loved the way they each grew to appreciate their own worth and confidence in their deserving of love. At first, it was a little harder for me to connect with Sylvi, but Jody Hedlund did a fabulous job making her relatable and helping me see beyond the trials of outward beauty.

This story is definitely leading up to the final showdown and leaves on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read Kristoffer’s story! I just know the final book is going to be amazing and am excited to read the conclusion to this fantastic series! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4-4.5 stars

Ah! So good! I sometimes feel like I’m repeating myself… I’m not sure how she does it, but Jody Hedlund thrills once again with an action-packed and swoon-worthy romantic adventure! This one has everything from disguises to thwarting an arranged marriage/marriage of convenience to treasonous plots and daring escapes! Plus the MOST GORGEOUS COVER! 😍

Espen, a member of the Knights of Brethren, has always felt a little less-than as the son of a fisherman, even after having been given every opportunity by the Prestegard family. He grew up with his best friend Kristoffer and his sister Sylvi and was given the opportunity to train as a knight alongside Kris. Sylvi has always been treated by her parents as nothing but an empty-headed beauty… and she almost believes it. Groomed to simply be a bargaining chip for her father, she at least thought he had her best interests at heart… that is until he arranges to have her marry a terrible man for reasons she can’t fathom. With nowhere to turn but her best friend Espen, they embark on a dangerous journey that will either lead them to love or destruction… maybe both.

Both Espen & Sylvi are absolutely charming. I mean, complete sweethearts, both of them. They’re at odds only because they keep trying to put each other’s needs first. Both struggle seriously with self image and believing themselves deserving more than they’ve grown up thinking. The journey there is packed with subtle faith themes and great overall lessons for teen readers.

The threats against the kingdom are serious. Espen’s quest for the holy lamp crucial. Amidst it all, a love story worthy of sitting up and taking notice- Hedlund uses much-loved tropes in new, creative ways that excite an adult reader just as much as a YA one. We’re entering the final act with this fifth book… I can’t wait for the conclusion in book six!!

I received a complementary copy of this book from the author and was not asked to leave a positive review.

First of all, I want to point out how beautiful the cover is. I think it might just be my favorite cover of the whole series.

While Gunnar is still my favorite, Espen certainly gave him a run for his money. What can I say? I have a thing for the charming flirts. Not to mention that Espen came from a big family and as someone from a big family I love to see that portrayed in fiction.

I loved Espen, the knight with the sea in his veins. And Sylvi was so sweet and compassionate it's impossible not to like her. Although I want to do a shout-out to the nameless squires for always being there for our man Espen. Poor saps never got called by their names, but they never complained. Good on those lads.

The setting of this one was perhaps my favorite part. I want a house on a cliff in the sea please and thank you.

I'm so hyped for the next book. I wasn't sure about Kris's story before this one becuase he always seemed like the knight who got the least amount of attention before and I didn't really feel like I knew him all that well, but this book did a really good job setting up for his own book. Also, it promises to be enemies to lovers which is my not-so-secret weakness.

I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

I am loving the way this series continues to unfold and Enflamed was another hit for me in a fantastic and original series.
At first, I wasn't sure how the plot would work with this one, staying unique when it had a marriage of convenience and a friends to more trope that potentially could have been similar to books three and four. I had no need to worry (not that I was truly worried for the record, this is a Jody Hedlund book and she never disappoints me), because the characters and plot were incredibly authentic and had such a personality of their own, it fully felt like its own story with its own twists and take on these fabulous tropes.
The chemistry continues to deliver all the swoon I adore in Jody's books. Even the way the dialogue was written impressed me and made me feel the individuality of the characters. I loved Espen and Sylvi. The setting was really neat too. I did not want it to end when the story was over and am so glad book six is only another month away because the ending has set up a lot of questions and excitement for me. The current villain was unexpected and I feel like an epic ending is in store.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I loved this so much, I did purchase a paperback copy. 4.5 stars.

Enflamed is a fun and original story that kept me captivated from beginning to end. It’s well- written, well paced, and a great blend of action, adventure, intrigue, plot twists, and romance.

Sylvi accidentally discovers her father has arranged for her to marry a wealthy but disreputable nobleman. She’s devastated and desperate to avoid this marriage. Feeling helpless to resolve this on her own, she turns to Espen, a member of the king’s elite group of Knights of Brethren, and her childhood friend.

Espen is preparing to leave on a quest for an ancient and holy relic, but he’s deeply in love with Sylvi and will do whatever it takes to help her and protect her. Their adventure together soon begins as they embark on a dangerous journey, but a journey where their love for each other will blossom.

Sylvi and Espen both deal with insecurities and self doubt. I loved seeing them overcome those and believe in who they really were, especially the strength and self confidence Sylvi gained.

I received an advance copy of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.

The messages about faith and trust were really encouraging to read. I loved reading about Sylvi and Espen as they learned to trust God to work things out for them. I also loved the symbol of the holy lamp and how as Christians we must keep it aflame, as we so our faith. So good. Also, the romance was super good. I adored it. The vibes were perfect. Medieval romance, legends and quests are some of my favorite things and this book has it.

A wonderful addition to the amazing Knights of Brethren series, Enflamed is full of action, romance, and mystery. I love friends to lovers tropes because the romance develops so realistically, and I really liked reading about the evolving relationship of Sylvi and Espen. The quest for the holy lamp is packed with intrigue as Sylvi and Espen seek to find it. There were twists that kept my attention and made it hard to put the book down. The romance has a perfect blend of swoony chemistry characteristic of all of Jody Hedlund’s novels, yet is still clean enough for young readers. I am always amazed at the author’s ability to consistently deliver creative plots, exciting characters, and fresh romance! I have greatly enjoyed this series and cannot wait for the next book! Highly recommended!

Jody Hedlund writes stories full of colorful images, sweet dialogue, and fierce battles with evil forces.
The characters in this book, are taken on a ride to find the “holy lamp,” in this magical book set in the land of Norvegia. They encounter a fierce storm on a ship, a daring climb to a high chapel, and a fight to be free from evil men, all with a bit of love and romance woven into the tale.
It’s a story so fierce that it will “enflame” the heart for what is right and what is good.
This is an enchanting story about love, honor, friendship, loyalty, and justice. It's also a story about righting wrongs and conquering evil.
An author who can create a wonderful world that captures your mind and takes you on a journey into the unknown is an author I will read more from. Jody Headline is such an author.
This book had drama, suspense, action, medieval elegance, overwhelming hardship, and sweet romance that will knock your socks off.
I highly recommend picking this book up! It really will keep you captured!

Another fun read in the Knights of Brethren series!

We finally got to read Espen and Sylvi's story, a mix of friends to lovers and marriage of convenience. It was a fun, quick, enjoyable read and everything is set up nicely for Kristoffer's book, the series finale. If you enjoy swoony medieval YA romance, you definitely need to pick up this series! 4.5 stars

I think this might be my favorite of the series!

Except for the times I had crippling anxiety….😳😬😰 I feel like I could literally just turn around and read it all over again😅 I cannot wait for the next book!

This is my favorite book of the series so far and I've probably said that about each one but that's the trouble with a series that just gets better and better! I honestly could not put it down and was shocked when I went to turn the page and discovered I reached the end because I was so captivated I forgot all about an ending. I just wanted to keep reading.

Another story packed full of action, intrigue, and romance, Enflamed by Jody Hedlund, is a beautiful story and a splendid addition to The Knights of Brethren series. A story of a knight and the most beautiful woman in the kingdom and their forbidden love this adventured filled swoony romance will pull readers in through the turn of the last page. A main theme in the story and something that both main characters struggle with is self worth and confidence. The story progresses in such a way that readers can see the development of these traits throughout the story. Another fabulous story from Hedlund that readers will not want to miss.

ENFLAMED takes you back to the land of lords and ladies, noblemen and squires, legends, and the search the holy lamp. This 5th installment in the Knights of the Brethren series is an absolute delight.

I love the relationship between Sylvi and Espen, which has moved from friendship to love, even though it is forbidden love and Sylvi’s father has arranged another more suitable match for her. The story captivated me from the beginning. It is beautifully written, well paced, with lots of twists and turns, and even a cliffhanger at the end. Jody Hedlund has written a fabulous medieval series, one I highly recommend!

I am really enjoying this series!
Each book is fantastic and this one is no different!
I loved the friends-to-lovers/best friends little sister trope, I loved the action and adventure, and the lessons that both Espen and Sylvi had to learn!
This one ends with a bit of a cliffhanger/unanswered questions so I'm do excited for the last book to know how everything gets resolved!!

4.5*

I was so excited to read this book. First, it's Jody Hedlund (I really like her books) and second, it's a set in the medieval era (I love the romanticism of the code of knights and much more). I hadn't read the previous books in this series but kept hearing such great things about it from several friends and other readers. But I dove right in and really enjoyed the story and felt like it worked great as a standalone. There were some backstory things I missed in relation to the other knights and their wives and stories but overall it didn't leave me trying to guess and fill in the blanks. So if you haven't read the previous books I think you'll be fine and you'll be wanting to go back and read the others after reading this one.

I loved watching the relationship between Sylvi and Espen. They've known each other for a long time. They've both cared for each other, without the other knowing. Some unrequited love between these two. We get to see both of their point of views, which I loved! I loved learning about them through their own thoughts and through the others' thoughts. I really like how that gives a greater depth to the character in seeing how others view them.

Espen is such a great character. He truly is a knight in shining armor. He's full of goodness and care for others. He's honorable and true. He cares deeply for his family and will do anything to protect them and his friends and fellow knights. I'm really excited to read their stories.

Sylvi is a very strong female character. She wants to be seen for who she is inside and not what everyone sees on the outside. I love how she wasn't afraid to figure out how to save herself from her father's schemes. She found a way and followed her heart.

I really loved watching these two grow closer together and share their strengths to help and protect each other. As well as growing to love each other more. And they have plenty of adventure ahead of them. Some they went searching for and other adventure was thrown at them unexpectedly. But they rose to the challenge.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. There has been a lot building within this world and kingdoms and it's all going to come to a head in the next/last book. This book left off on a big cliffhanger and I'm dying to know what's coming for these two as well as Kristoffer (Sylvi's brother). If you're ready for a great adventure, wonderful knights, sweet and clean romance, friendship, code of honor, family, betrayal, strength and much, much more, you should pick up this one and the series!

Content: Clean. Some kisses between the characters but nothing further. No language. Some fighting and intense moments related to war and espionage. I'd share this with my teenagers.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Enflamed
Knights of Brethren #5
By Jodi Hedlund

Sylvi Prestegard has always considered Espen as someone she could depend on to aid her, and if ever there was a time she needed his aid, it was now. But Espen, like her brother Kristoffer, is on a quest for the king. To stop King Canute's Dark Warriors, the Holy Lamp must be located with all haste to prevent Norvegia from falling to Swaine.

But when Espen's entreaties on Sylvi's behalf are denied and met with scorn, Sylvi knows she must thwart the evil plans being made that will destroy her future and threaten Norvegia's throne. The only way that she can see to save the kingdom and her future is to wed Espen.

But Espen knows he will never be worthy of any noblewoman, much less, Sylvi, who has been groomed all her life, to use her beauty as a tool in her father's quest for greater worth and prestige. But he must save Sylvi, and Espen only hopes he can be strong enough to do what must be done to keep her protected until she is free from her father's threat.

Filled with all the adventure and daring of the previous books in the Knights of Brethren series, Enflamed will keep you reading until the very end. You won't want to put this one down, and it will keep you reading until the early hours of the morning. There are some unexpected twists as Espen and Sylvi's quest reveals a threat no one knew about - one that could spell the end of all of Norvegia's hopes to stop Swaine and the threat she and her king pose.

Enflamed could easily be read without first reading the first four books in the series but reading the books in order will make for a more satisfying reading experience. This is one series I highly recommend reading in order.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

Don't you just love this cover?

'If I had to listen to my friends speak of their wives one more second, I was going to heave.'

I laughed as I read this first sentence of Enflamed but it didn't take long to realize that even though Epsen wasn't married, he was surely infatuated! This is a story to enjoy and savor, with two characters who stole my heart, and an adventure that spurred my imagination. A gallant knight, a beautiful maiden, and deplorable villains determined to overtake Norvegia are all a part of the thrilling search for the Holy Lamp.

Author Jody Hedlund shares a heart-pounding adventure with numerous twists, turns, and extreme danger but it's enhanced by a breathtaking romance between Espen and Sylvi. In the first four books of the Knights of Brethren series, there have been four knights who found true love, but how will this be possible for Espen and Sylvi? He thinks himself unworthy of her and she believes that he only sees her as his friend's little sister! And then, as they battle to find the Holy Lamp, the magic begins. Swoon-worthy moments, incredible chemistry, and personal sacrifices become a testament to their unconditional love but there are so many odds against them!

Hedlund never fails to weave a faith message in her stories and there are many nuggets of inspiration in Enflamed. There's also the classic trope of 'friends to more' and a cliff-hanger ending that promises even more excitement ahead. If you enjoy medieval tales and romantic adventure, do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book!

I love Espen. I liked him for his acerbic wit and his pragmatic take on things in the last book. Espen may be one of my favourite heroes in this series because I see a lot of myself in characters like him.
So, when I saw Espen was the protagonist of this story, I was thrilled.
I liked this 5th instalment of the story and the way that another Holy Relic was worked into the tale. One thing I miss though is the dragons. Dragons featured in the first two books in the series, and apparently, they're well known in this fictional world. After the 2nd book though... everyone seems to have forgotten about them.

The parts about the Holy Lamp and the lore surrounding it worked well though.
Although I liked the take on the childhood sweethearts to lovers trope which was the basis of the romantic relationship, I have to say Sylvie never really clicked with me. I found her passion in art and gathering sea glass interesting: but she came over as a little too perfect and some of the times when she just happens to overhear stuff look a little contrived.

Maybe it’s just me, but the notion that she was just a "dumb woman" doesn't really justify people discussing treason basically in front of her and just assuming she will stay quiet about it.
I don't know maybe it’s a personal thing, but I just don't like stories where the antagonists seem to have been made totally stupid, gullible, or incompetent in order to make the heroes look smarter. Then again, this series is geared towards teens so maybe I am overthinking things.
I did love this as a continuation of the series though, and I look forward to the exciting conclusion this is building up to.

The Knights of Brethren series employs many popular tropes, and this story has a marriage of convenience, a romance between two different social spheres, and childhood friends exploring the idea of changing infatuation into something more. This is Espen's story of serving his king by searching for the holy lamp from Christ's tomb in hopes that it would help save the country of Norvegia in battle against the Dark Warriors. His biggest distraction was his dear friend Sylvi, who had always tagged along with her brother Kristoffer and Espen as they trained to become knights. Although Kristoffer and Sylvi were from the noble class, Espen was a commoner from a fishing village and knew that Sylvi would always be off limits to him. As with all the heroines in the series, she was beautiful not only in face, but also in spirit, and like the other heroines, was willing to sacrifice her own desires to serve others. So far, this is my favorite book in the series, although I did feel the ending was a little abrupt and didn't give enough of a landing. I suspect that it will all come together in the final book of the series, and I definitely recommend reading the books in order to avoid spoilers. It was truly a privilege to read the complimentary pre-release copy and to offer my thoughts in this review.

This series just keeps getting better! I loved Espen and Sylvi’s story. Espen is a strong and skilled warrior. As one of the Kings knights he is highly valued, but not enough to be worthy of Lord Prestegards daughter Sylvi. Something is wrong about the way Sylvi’s father is choosing her betrothed. Will Espen be able to save Sylvi from her destined future. Suspense, intrigue, deceit, loyalty, honor and swoony romance makes for a perfect storm of a story. The storyline is perfection. The characters blend so well together and you find yourself gripping the book, hoping for their HEA. You my get one, but oh… the teaser for the 6th and final book! I can not wait until I get to devour Entrusted.

I cannot help but fall more and more in love with Jody Hedlund's Knights of Brethren series. Each installment is a breathtaking tale of romance, danger, and the fight for honor. In this particular novel, we follow Sylvi and Espen on their quest for the Holy Light. Without giving anything away, let me just say that Espen is my favorite of the Knights so far! His integrity and unconditional love shine through the pages and illuminate a story that completely transfixed me.

Jody Hedlund knows how to hold her readers spellbound - a true master storyteller, one who never disappoints. I cannot recommend this series highly enough!

I received the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Jody Hedlund's Knights of Brethren series has been fantastic; Enflamed was every bit as awesome as the other books have been.

Enflamed has everything I've come to expect from this series - action, adventure, swoony knights, a steadfast leading lady, daring rescues, plot twists I didn't see coming, romance......ah the romance. Espen and Sylvi were the cutest, y'all.

I loved seeing Sylvi come to stand up for herself throughout this story and fight for what she wanted. I also loved that Espen valued her for more than just her pretty face - he loved her for the person she was, not only her outward appearance. They were so perfect together.

I am so excited to see where this story goes in the next book!! With the way this book ended, the next one is sure to be an epic conclusion to the series. I can already tell it's going to be awesome.

*I received an early copy of this book from the author; all thoughts are my own :)

LOVED this story, it was one of those you just couldn't put down until finished. Of all the knights of brethren, Espen has got to be my favorite for his humble start, and easy going nature. The story of the eternal flame was quite the adventure and I found myself cheering Sylvi on in her atrempts to escape her heartless father and creepy uncle. From start to finish a real cliff hanger full of adventures, romance and interesting characters.
I was given a copy of this book prior to release, this is my honest review on it.

I know I say this with each new YA book of Ms Hedlund, but this is my favorite! A sweet, slow burning friends to lovers romance in the midst of life saving adventure. Espen and Sylvi have some serious self control-I’m impressed!

Continuing saga in Jody Hedlund’s Knights of Brethren series. Sylvi and Espen have been friends since childhood. Sylvia’s father arranges a marriage for Sylvi but Sylvi runs away before the wedding and Espen becomes her knight in shining armor. Exciting from start to finish with danger and peril! This is an exciting series that everyone should read!
