“That’s my promise. I’ll keep you safe from any outside threats, but you won’t be safe from me.”
This isn't something I'll say often, but for this book, I think it might have been better if the author concentrated less on the plot and stuck to the smut. Actually, I think I can say it pretty confidently. The plot really kicks into gear around 60% or so, and from there to the end, the book kinda went downhill for me. It was especially disappointing because of how much I liked the first half. We're following Sabella, the daughter of a motorcycle club owner whose life is in danger because of her father's business. He takes her to an old army friend, Arista, who is to be in charge of her protection.
That was already a great starting point, because I love bodyguard romances, and right now I'm in the mood to consume a lot of them. The book starts off with some action, which I really liked, and when our two heroines meet, sparks start flying almost immediately. Arista doesn't want to start anything romantic or sexual with a client, especially the daughter of a friend, but Sabella decides that she wants her, and won't stop pushing her buttons. The writing wasn't the best, but they had such good chemistry, and every time they were on page together, it was so hot. I loved that Sabella could hold her own, but gives herself over to Arista once she decides that's what she wants. I loved their dynamic; when things get going, it was really really hot.
The latter half had more action, which was great, since the first half was very light on the actual bodyguarding. But the writing surrounding the MC, Arista's business, the rival gang... it was all a little incoherent. So many details about Arista's firm and the cover story just didn't make sense to me. Ditto for a bunch of her actions. It was one of those scenarios where the book TOLD you why a character made a specific decision, but it still doesn't really make sense. To me, at least. The writing also became shoddier? I remember that this bugged me in the first book I read by this author. Characters would speak in huge, uninterrupted blocks of text, so it felt like no one was having a conversation. Instead, everyone was giving mini TED talks. It was so unnatural, and kind of irritating to read.
A lot of these things just straight up didn't occur in the first half, which is why I say this might have done better as just a smutty novella. I definitely expected I would be rating this higher. But I'm still pleased that I enjoyed it so much more than the previous book I read by Woods. It at least gives me some hope I might enjoy her other stuff.
I just love the “Arranged To Love” series. What Alexa Woods can do to a story in the age gap trope is fascinating. This one had a darker edge than usual but it was exciting and hot. Sabella is nineteen and after almost being kidnap by her fathers enemy, she is forced to stay with Arista. Arista who life was saved by Zeke, Sabella’s father, is doing him a favor and keeping Sabella safe until this war in the MC get squared away. Soon Sabella, a tough cookie taught by her Dad, has her sights set on Arista, who is twenty one years older. Life is going to get tougher as the location of Sabella is revealed and an attempt again is made but not on Arista’s watch or is it. What a spell bounding read!
I loved this book as much as the rest of the series. I would definitely recommend. A great chemistry a little BDSM. Hot scenes. My only complaint is I can’t buy her books in paper form. I prefer paperbacks but can only use my kindle with this author. So please print print print
Wow another amazing storyline I loved the main characters chemistry the push and pull was exceptional the twist and turns were perfection on a rollercoaster ride of emotions congratulations
