The way I tell you I want to just throw myself out the window from how fucking amazing this story is!!! Dear lord! Their chemistry is OFF THE CHARTS!
When the office's straight "Prince Charming," Hikaru, visits a gay bar, he encounters a suave and charismatic player-one who, for some reason, can't stand him. Driven by pride, Hikaru becomes obsessed with winning him over, unaware that this mysterious man is none other than Shinobu, his seemingly nerdy and unattractive coworker. Like a real-life Clark Kent, Shinobu hides behind his unassuming nerdy and loser-like office persona to keep a low profile. But instead of successfully wooing his new obsession, Hikaru finds himself completely swept off his feet in a whirlwind of charm, wit, and unexpected romance. A hilarious rom-com with tasteful smut that will make not just your heart throb! 🩵💕

This is a reread. I like it more this time around. The story is about our two leads toying around with each other and accidentally getting attached. I enjoy how stubborn and prideful they are. It's funny how they both think they have the upper hand in the situation while being in denial of their feelings. While they do have chemistry together, their relationship is rooted more in physical compatibility so I question how long they would last in a relationship. The twins also crack me up. Every chapter, I was waiting for them to pop up with their outfits and shenanigans.

At first I thought that only one of them was an asshole, and then I realised that they were both asssholes, but then they both softened to each other and neither ended up as an asshole.
Character growth! As long as you're not looking for an in-depth story, this is is pretty much what it says on the tin. Good times, good artwork.

Shinobu is the geeky, clumsy guy at the office, the complete opposite of Hikaru, who everyone calls "The Prince". But when Hikaru shows up at the bar where Shinobu lets his hair down, his desire to get one up on the guy who has everything gets the better of him! An interesting couple with a great dynamic and hot and sexy times, a great casual read.

I didn’t expect to like this one as much as I did, both characters are way too full of themselves for my usual taste but I loved how easily they fell in love despite themselves. Plus the way Hikaru fall apart for Shinobu 🥵

Why I read it: Enemies to lovers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts: This is the last of my BL manga reviews for now, and I honestly think this might be the best one of the lot. I unfortunately read it too close to the start and the disappointments that came after (Seaside Stranger, Senpai This Can't Be Love!, Deadlock) kind of soured me on my whole nostalgia-filled reading process, but just thinking about this title gets me revved up again!!

First off, the hilarious enemies to lovers situation does not get resolved until close to the end of the volume! And even then, they still bicker and tease each other, which is great. The characters, Shinobu and Hikaru, are suuuuuper into each other, but to go from arguing/teasing to complete sugary soulmate-y lovey-doveyness would have been a terrible switch-up.

Second off, the reason why the enemies to lovers sitch is so funny is because Shinobu is pulling off a real-life Clark Kent switcheroo: during the day he slouches, wears thick glasses, brushes his hair into, I guess, an unappealing/inconvenient style, and also acts like a total klutz; at night, he's super suave and sexy, confident, all slicked back and powerful.

Third off, even though Shinobu does initially get with Hikaru in an attempt to teach him a lesson or potentially obtain blackmail on Hikaru, whom he absolutely loathes and who loathes him, he eventually realises that he's in too deep and he's caught feelings. And what do Hikaru and Shinobu do about it once the jig is up? They communicate. There is betrayal and hurt, but they really do talk it through and agree to be together without the pretense. There is still room for growth (as evidenced by the fact that there's like two more volumes in the series), but they get a lot done in just one volume, with decent pacing to boot.

Fourth off, the steamy scenes are plenty steamy. Hikaru, who thought he was God's gift to women, is so needy and attention-seeking (I wonder why, genuinely) that he wants to become God's gift to men too, even though he's not actually sexually interested in men (until Shinobu), so Shinobu gets to crack the shell of a very snooty virgin, and it's pretty good. When Shinobu goes "I'm going teach you a lesson about your own body" and proceeds to introduce Hikaru to his own prostate: 10/10.

Fifth off, man, I love the art. Shinobu is a literal Clark Kent, and Hikaru is so pretty. I also love their individual personalities and insecurities and everything else about them.

So this manga is, to me, 10s across the board.

Would I read more: More from this author and more in this series, yes!!!

Would I reread it: Yes!

Using the Superman trope of wearing glasses makes you a different person is really fun in a book. Revenge to lovers is also a interesting idea for a book but I didn’t hate it

I really liked this one. It does such a fantastic job with the second identity trope.

Shinobu has been working as an office drone for eight years, mostly seeming to shuttle supplies around, take inventory, etc. At work, he keeps up a pretty sloppy disguise: shaggy hair hanging over his face, bottle-thick glasses, loose clothes, terrible posture and a goofy grin and clumsily careless attitude. He does it mostly to keep attention off himself - he's hot enough that he doesn't want the office ladies hitting on him, especially since he's quite confidently gay.

So after work, he often hangs out at a local gay bar, spends time with friends there, and casually hooks up with men. It's an easy enough life and he seems to be doing alright on both fronts.

There is one annoyance at work, though: a shining star of an employee, a princely pretty boy named Hikaru, who's charming to everyone (mostly the ladies) but saves his sharp tongue and criticisms for Shinobu. He always picks at Shinobu's sloppy appearance and tries to get him to push his bangs out of his face - maybe you'll be less clumsy that way! - and in general just irritates Shinobu and his attempts to continually fly under the radar.

Then, one day, Hikaru shows up at Shinobu's favorite after-work relaxation bar and settles in for the long haul. Based on a silly conversation with a work friend, he's determined to see if he's charming and handsome enough to make men fall for him, too. Which they mostly do - he definitely generates interest from other guys at the bar - except for the hottest guy there, a "Nin-Nin" (short for Shinobu) who seems determined to avoid them.

I really liked how their initial interactions played out, and how they truly got attached to each other over time. Shinobu didn't have the best intentions at first, but neither did Hikaru; Hikaru was a "straight guy" just trying to prove that he was desirable, by stringing along genuinely gay men, whereas Shinobu figured he'd give Hikaru a taste of being with a guy to (a) make him straight-panic and flee back to his normal life and (b) put some blackmail in his back pocket in case Hikaru figured out who he was and tried to out him at work.

Except Hikaru doesn't figure it out, at least not for a while, and both of them end up genuinely developing feelings. The chemistry was really good, and the eventual reveal was actually handled really well? There was no "oh ew I can't believe it was you" from Hikaru, and he put together the clues pretty quickly once it occurred to him that the sloppy and suave Shinobus had the potential to be the same person.

Mostly, he was hurt, which he expressed, immediately and clearly, because he had liked Shinobu, and he felt very stupid for having wanted something real out of their interactions.

And instead of it dragging out, Shinobu just pulls Hikaru back to him and says, hey, me too, I didn't start out with the best intentions, but I like you.

And it's just...nice? I pretty much liked everything about this volume.

There are a couple more volumes, which I'm tentatively excited about, because Niyama's other series, My Dearest Patrolman , had a great first volume and then two rather dull and pointless ones that dragged on past what would've been a fantastic one-shot. So I very much hope this series is better on that front.

I've always been curious about Niyama's works because their art style looks so good... there's a series about a policeman? But I kinda have a hard time justifying a multi-volume manga purchase when I don't know the mangaka yet, so this one-shot is a good chance to try it out. It's also part of the toranoana BL comic fair 2021, so I used my points to get a free booklet. (The booklet is about them doing an office role play in a love hotel, btw.)

It's about Shinobu, an aptly named guy who puts on a disguise in the office so he'll fall under everyone's radar. His joy in life is hanging out at his favourite gay bar and occasionally hooking up with someone. Hikaru is the office prince, popular among women and very proper about his appearance. He sometimes tells Shinobu off for being unkempt, although he's not really mean about it.

Hikaru is surprisingly nice, despite being introduced as something of a pompous guy. Shinobu doesn't like him because Hikaru soaks up admiration and praise among normies and generally has no place in Shinobu's oasis. So when Shinobu finds Hikaru spending time in his favourite gay bar, Shinobu thinks of some way to make Hikaru fuck off.

And honestly, he does have good reason to be annoyed: Hikaru started hanging out at the gay bar because he wanted to prove (to himself? 😂) that he can be popular with men as well. He saw Shinobu as a challenge, someone whom he needed to seduce to prove how attractive he is. At some point, when Shinobu finally started flirting with him, Hikaru feels guilty because he never actually told anyone in the bar that he's straight.

Obviously he's not straight. But there's a lot about Hikaru that's so attractive: he's the company ace, the so-called prince, and he wants people to want him. 'It has no meaning if I'm the one who approaches first,' he's the type that conquers without lifting a finger and isn't that a cute power bottom?? So apparently Shinobu won best seme award at ChilChil, and I think it's because people think he's funny and sexy. But Hikaru is definitely a good pair with him. ☺

The art is amazing and the sex scenes are really good. I'm definitely gonna look at more Niyama manga after I pay off my doujinshi debts lmaoo

I really enjoyed this. It's nothing new or particularly unique, but it executes the vision perfectly. It's rare to find a BL that doesn't incorporate one problematic trope or another, so I will treasure this one.

The central plot is a really great 'all's fair in love and war' kind of courtship. Everyone loves a good arrogant character who declares that "I'll make him fall for me", only to do all the falling himself. And the added subplot about Shinobu and his double identity adds a nice extra spice to the story and keeps it from being too cliched.

The best part is that the 'warfare' is perfectly balanced. It's not one nice guy redeeming an asshole, or one good person being taken advantage of by a bad one. Both characters have underhanded, selfish motives, but they know where the line is, and consent is still key, which is more than you can say for a lot of BL. They both experience real growth over the course of the story, but especially Hikaru who seems to realise what a narcissistic, shallow-minded person he's been to date - not ill-intentioned, just misguided and a bit of a fool.

The art is good and consistent and does a great job conveying the characterisation. Smut is generous, but generally also tasteful and story-advancing rather than purely gratuitous.

I also really loved the secondary characters. Hikaru's long-suffering friend who ignores all of his ridiculously conceited comments; and the twins and the bartender at the bar, all of whom give strong supportive-spill-the-tea-fam vibes. These guys round out the story and give it more context so that the central relationship can shine.

Overall,

Shinobu works as an office clerk no one notices—by his own design. He wears thick glasses, slouches and has an unbecoming hairstyle. People are a bit rude to him, and no one more so than the office prince, every woman’s dream, Hikaru.

But by night, Shinobu sheds the disguise and heads to his favourite gay bar as his handsome, hot self. One night, Hikaru shows up there. His gay coworker has told him some men are so hot even other men want them, and he wants to be irresistible to men too. But his presense ruins everything for Shinobu who tries to avoid Hikaru. That only makes Hikaru notice him and want him.

To make Hikaru leave him and his favourite bar alone, Shinobu seduces Hikaru. It goes well. So well, that Hikaru returns for more. The two spend several nights together, but Shinobu is always gone by morning so that Hikaru won’t find out who he really is. But one thing Shinobu hasn’t changed is his name, and something Hikaru’s go-worker says makes Hikaru think the two Shinobus might be the same person. It takes a late night at work for the truth to come out: both men may have caught some feelings.

This was a good story. Both men were a bit self-centered and obnoxious, but Hikaru had a greater character change from a narcissist to needy, although Shinobu changed too, from player to a one guy man. This had a stand-alone feel, but there are at least two more volumes, and I’d be interested in reading more.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This is a cute rivals to lovers story. Shinobu Urakawa is a frumpy office worker by day and a playboy by night. Hikaru Omoteya is the narcissistic office prince who thinks that everyone should fall in love with him, men included.

Hikaru ends up at the gay bar Shinobu frequents to prove his point and things start to get a little interesting. Hikaru decides he needs to make the man that won't pay attention to him (Shinobu) fall for him, and Shinobu decides to play dirty to try to scare Hikaru away from his late night sanctuary.

It's cute, it's funny, and it's spicy. I enjoyed watching these two rather cocky men fall for each other. The twins were pretty funny too. Overall this is just a fun, fairly light read.

If you like office romance plus mistaken identity/separate work/life personas this is a good one.

I started it thinking it was a solid 4⭐️ but with our blonde MC being so obnoxious about everyone loving him which motivates him to start going to a gay bar even though he identifies as straight because he figures he needs the validation that men love him as much as women I started thinking of one of my favourite ridiculous MCs Hero-kun from Obnoxious Hero-kun and I was hooked.

This one is uncensored and SPICY 🥵

I also think they are cute together as they fall for each other.

Look forward to the rest and I guess I need to read My Dearest Patrolman series that is sitting in my TBR pile now as it’s the same mangaka.
