Sometimes being immortal makes you wish you were dead.
Although twins Celeste and Nick Crenshaw are introduced in The Immortal Twin, most readers consider The Immortal Detective a standalone. After losing both parents to a vampire attack, the twins lead a pampered lifestyle under the watchful eye of adoptive parents, Razvan and Bianca Torok. On the surface, the Toroks are founders of a Fortune-500 laboratory. Secretly, they are commanders of the Realm, a vampiric coalition, its primary mission the protection of mortals from mutinous vampires.
When catastrophe strikes, and Nick's rebellious ways place Celeste in peril, the Toroks instruct their supreme warrior to return her to Kansas City, unaware of a vindictive vampiress's intent to destroy their daughter at first opportunity. The Immortal Detective opens immediately following the attack. While Celeste grapples with the painful transition from mortal to vampire, ancient vampires swoop in and whisk her away to an interdimensional utopia where they impart supernatural capabilities.
Acquiring a novice's aptitude at best, Celeste doubts her ability to utilize her new powers and deny her vampiric urges once the ancients return her to the Kansas City Detective Squad. Solving a sex-trafficking case with the assistance of her uncanny powers, Celeste manages to stay one explanation ahead of her suspicious police captain. But when assigned a rash of complex homicides, while juggling a zealous lover, a demanding five-year-old vampire, and a gay nanny determined to make headlines, Celeste realizes it's going to take everything in her arsenal to solve cases growing cold.
Perfect for those who enjoy complex detective mysteries, as well as novels by Nalini Singh, J. R. Ward, and Anne Rice.

Acquiring an early appreciation of prose written by Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and the audacious Stephen King, Woodling chose to follow in their intimidating footsteps, evidenced by The Immortal Twin (CamCat Books 2020) and The Immortal Detective, released by CamCat Books, March 2023. Despite a distracting clowder of black cats and a playlist that often strikes an ominous chord, she is hard at work on the third book in the series.

For The Readers
When Detective Celeste Crenshaw’s eyes snap open, she knows exactly what she’s become. After all, subverting one’s mortality comes at a price. Surrounded by a horde of winged, hawk-nosed apparitions, whose powers are far superior to hers, Celeste soon finds herself a prisoner in a crystalline palace within an interdimensional utopia.
Where the vampire Elders offer her two choices: accept her vampiric state and agree to terms she considers sacrilegious, or carry her severed head into the afterlife.
No stranger to the undead, as her adoptive parents have commanded a vampiric coalition for centuries, Celeste begrudgingly submits, her primary objective the means to spend eternity with her twin brother—Nick, the only parents she has ever known, and her immortal lover, Tristan.
Undergoing grueling training, Celeste hardly excels when introduced to mind reading, shapeshifting, invisibility, and clandestine persuasion. The Elders assure her practice makes perfect, but it’s her failure to suppress her bloodlust that troubles them most…that and not one of them is convinced she will follow a newly adopted directive.
Crime running rampant, Celeste battles an overwhelming desire to exsanguinate mortals upon her return to the Kansas City Detective Squad; concocting a rational explanation for her eyebrow-raising supernatural feats is every bit as challenging. Hot on the trail of a sex trafficking ring, she soon wonders if there may be a connection between the dozens of missing women, a slew of gang-related homicides, and the mutilated bodies discovered outside the city.
Gritty and whimsical, The Immortal Detective is best described as a gripping police procedural with an underlying paranormal element—the lyrical, atmospheric passages haunting and reminiscent of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire.
Although I’ve written eight novels, I consider The Immortal Detective the most challenging. Because I wanted Celeste’s supernatural abilities to seem as plausible as possible, I poured over some pretty mind-numbing but titillating research material. While I could wrap my head around telepathy, telekinesis, and psychokinesis, quantum physics sent me scrambling for a bottle of Advil.
No reader appreciates a series of unexpected twists and turns more than I do, which is why I’ve included a number of in-your-face surprises throughout the book. I admit I’m on the edge of my seat, wondering how many of you will be able to identify the killer(s) before the big reveal. I realize there are plenty of wonderful books to choose from, so please know I feel particularly honored and extremely grateful for your interest in this one.

I was totally into it from the start! The author's blend of historical figures like Queen Elizabeth I, Nostradamus, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Socrates was genius. Their interactions were hilarious! And the narrator in the audiobook? Flawless! The way they switched accents for each character was mind-blowing! And that plot twist? Completely blindsided me! I never saw it coming! My thoughts about it, it started really gireat. I loved how the author mixed it with some of the renown people such as Queen Elizabeth I, NostradamusNotradamus, Leonardo Da Vincci, i, and Socrates. It was actually really funny, especially their interactions with each other. What I also loved is how the narrator, in the audiobook, was able to change his/her accent whenever these renown people speaks. Wow! It was really amazing! And when When it comes to that major plot twist? Wow! I didn’t see it coming. It was a total surprise.
I gave it a 4-star rating because I was let down by the ending. I wanted more of Celestine and Tristan's story! It felt like there was so much left unexplored, and I'm left with a ton of unanswered questions. Why I rated it 4-star nonly is because I was really disappointed by the epilogue. how it ended. I was craving for more of the Celestine and Tristan story. I feel like th I feel like there’s more to it, l have so many questions that are left nunanswered.
If you are a fan of vampires, romantasy, paranormal, supernatural, then this book is totally worth reading. If you're into vampires, romance, fantasy, and all things paranormal and supernatural, this book is a must-read!
Magic, fantasy, and mystery - some of my most favorite genres all in one!
This story follows a brand new vampire and her journey learning about her powers.
The book was alright, I may have enjoyed the text version more than the audiobook.
It was hard to follow along with, and even though the narrator changed her voice depending on the character - she was didn't express much emotion and was a bit monotone.
The Immortal Detective by D B Woodling is the total package. At first it was the title that drew be into Celeste’s vampiric world, then I saw the amazing cover, then I read the blurb, and I loved every minute I spent there.
Celeste never would have chosen her undead life. Her mother, father, and brother, as well as her lover, Tristan were all vampires…and she hated them all. Because she is a decorated detective, her family petitioned the powers that be to imbue her with many of their gifts. With all the calamity in the world, she could fulfill a purpose. She would also be tasked with bringing those deserving into the fold, increasing their numbers. Their actions can, and will, change the world.
I love how they can morph into fantastical creatives, teleport, time travel, fly, read minds, implant suggestions, and so much more. It takes Celeste some time to get a handle on her powers, but the Elders will be there to assist her when necessary.
Celeste has an adopted daughter, Raina, and a flamboyant, gay vampire nanny, Fane, who live with her in her beloved Victorian home. Even baby vampires are children, frightened by nightmares…or premonitions. I became enamored with these characters and want more of them.
I love the dialogue between Raina and Fane…fun, fun, fun. He knows how to distract her from the bad, put a smile on her face, and entertain her while her mommy is fighting crime. I love that Celeste and Raina sleep together in the same coffer. Talk about cuddle time.
Celeste is a detective with the Kansas City Police. She will put her powers to the test as she endeavors to eliminate a sex trafficking ring. Lots of action. A choice will be made and I love it. The choice can definitely lead to another book in the series.
I missed reading the first book in the series, The Immortal Twin, and I feel I would have connected to the characters better if I knew their back story. Sometimes I forget to check and see if a book is part of a series and I wish I would have read the the books in order, but I can still recommend The Immortal Detective. I just recommend reading The Immortal Twin first.
To me, this read was like a souped up vampire edition of if an Avenger joined the police force. This really feels like book 2 of the series. Once I got about 30% into this book, I could not shake this feeling. NetGalley and goodreads don't give any indication of this being apart of a series. I finally was able to confirm that this is indeed book 2, following The Immortal Twin. Not knowing this absolutely shaped my opinions on the book and didn't do the book a positive service. I was mildly confused for some time as I didn't know the backstory. I did find it pretty entertaining in spite of my confusion. There were a few spicy bits. I felt a back and forth pull throughout the book. Some chapters read like a normal human detective story. Others involved every superpower you could imagine a vampire to have along with historical figures.
Do I recommend reading this one? I'm not sure. I haven't read book 1 to know if I would have even picked up book 2.
Audiobook narration was fine. No major pros/cons to mention really.
Thank you NetGalley, D. B. Woodling, and CamCat Books for a copy of this audiobook ARC.
A fun mix of the paranormal, a police procedural and a little bit of romance. Celeste has been through a lot in her young life. Now she's newly immortal, working the night shift to avoid sunlight, and tracking down some really evil bad guys. They all present unimaginable challenges as Celeste learns how to be a vampire and everything that comes with it. Then there's her lover, Tristan, a fierce warrior that fends off the demented, blood lusting rogue vampires while trying to look after Celeste and her family. Will Celeste be able to keep her secret from her co-workers? Will she ever get the hang of her newly granted powers? Can she stay on the good side of the omnipresent elders?
This is a very entertaining start to a new series. The characters are well fleshed out, likeable and intriguing. The writing is solid with a leisurely pace. I got a chuckle out of the inclusion of some historic figures as vampires. While there is a prequel that introduces the characters, I didn't feel I missed anything from not reading it first but after reading this one I was intrigued enough to go back and start reading The Immortal Twin. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to future additions to the series.
Thank you to the author, CamCat Books and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
I enjoyed that this immortal story was not romance focused, but there was some. There was a good mix between explaining the immortal world and Celeste’s detective job and I like how it transitioned between the two. The elders, not only who they are, but also their teaching methods, were an entertaining way to learn all about the powers associated with being immortal. I loved how the powers didn’t come naturally to Celeste and she had to figure out how they would blend with her job. Fang brought a humorous break to the story and the other side characters were written well. I didn’t realize there was a book before this and there were enough flashbacks and information that I didn’t feel lost, but I would have liked that extra world building. There were some twists and an ending that has me needing to know how Celeste is going to move forward.
Thank you @dbwoodling @camcat_books and @suzyapprovedbooktours for the gifted copy.
DNF I'm not going to rate this one because it wouldn't be fair to the author-- I just couldn't get into this book. It's not the book's fault, however. For what it's worth, the book seemed very interesting, but I just didn't have the time or energy to finish it. Maybe in the future, I will finish it, but as of now, it's a DNF.
Looking for a great vampire book? I’ve got one for you right here!
Great first line! “The only thing worse than never waking up is waking up dead.”
There are really two parts to this book. The first four chapters are of Celeste waking up as a vampire. She meets with all of the elders as they teach her the ins and outs of all of the super powers she will now have such as… Walking through walls, becoming invisible, teleportation just to name a few. Then the whole rest of the book is pretty much every day life as a vampire detective. It’s as “every day“ as a vampire can get. Lots of fun, lots of action.
The real winners in this book are the characters! With characters like Queen Elizabeth 1, Socrates, Nostradamus, Leonardo da Vinci, her “adopted” daughter Raina, and the warm, hilarious, and flamboyant Fane (umm housemate/Raina’s caregiver and also a vampire) - he was my favorite! “Fane was unicorns and rainbows, tornadoes and Armageddon, all wrapped up in one disturbing package.”
“If I am subjected to one more ghastly reading of that trope-filled Alice in Wonderland, I shall slit my own throat. Whoever thought it a grand idea for young children to idolize obviously demented Alice suffers similar mental decline.” “It’s a classic, Fane.” “Ha. The same could be said of dinosaur excrement, but do you see me devouring it?”
Our main character, Celeste, a detective who is also a vampire is wreaking havoc on the bad guys! The suspects/perps don’t stand a chance against her! With blood in a thermos and armed with powers such as opening locked doors, hovering above the ground, seeing into their memories, and I’m pretty sure threatening a confession out of someone by showing your fangs isn’t exactly legal. My gosh, this would make a great TV series! I think I’m seeing the next wonder woman here! “I forced a laugh. “I’m human after all, not some kind of superhero.”
I was late starting this book so my intention was to read it quickly and even skim through some pages. Nope, that didn’t happen. I had to read literally every single word because this book was so enjoyable.
Make this vampire book your next read! I can't wait for more in this series!
I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Partners in Crime Tours - Thank You!!
The Immortal Detective by D.B. Woodling is a vampire detective novel and an exciting hybrid of supernatural and mystery genres. It wasn’t clear that this is a sequel to The Immortal Twin (which also follows our FMC Celeste), which I now feel compelled to read if only to understand the vampire world better. Woodling does an excellent job with the hook at the beginning, throwing us in Hollow Earth with famous vampire characters, including Nostradamus, who turned into my favorite character. Then, when it switched to Celeste returning to her old life and returning to work as a detective, albeit on the night shift, Woodling started to lose my interest. I enjoy mystery novels and have read several detective-specific stories, but something about this didn’t quite work for me, and I zoned out in some places and had to try to rewind. The narration was good, thankfully. There are no distracting breathing or swallowing noises that can trigger my misophonia (noise anxiety disorder), so that’s a win for me right there. I could also speed it up without losing quality. I saw some reviews mention disliking the narration, but I thought there was the right amount of emotion behind the words and dialogue for this genre. I do wonder why the cover art they chose made it all the way to publication, though. Doesn’t match the plot or vibe of the novel, in my opinion. I chose this book for the description and title and definitely not the cover. It was a tough call on the rating because I wasn’t that into it by the final chapter but at the same time I want to listen to The Immortal Twin. In the end, three stars for the hook, the narration, and Nostradamus. I listened to the audiobook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am loving The Immortal Detective. This book is sooo engaging to readers. I love vampires and I loved how Celeste becomes an immortal but hates it. That was an awesome twist to start out with. I love the writing style also, makes me see the story as I read the book. I liked the story of Tristan and Celeste, trying to make their relationship work throughout the book. I also loved Celeste's relationship with her daughter Raina. However, I felt that by not reading the prequel to this book that I missed some important storyline, so read the prequel people! Celeste is also a detective and a really good one at that. She is liked by her peers at the force. I liked the elders being famous figures in history, that was super creative. And finally, I love that ending and cannot wait to read the next book! I of course will just say what I always do at the end of my reviews, if you like vampires, historical figure mentor people, etc. READ THIS BOOK!
I would rate this book at a 4.5 out of 5 y'all, not a 4;)
I really enjoyed this book! I do wish I had read the first book in the series before this, The Immortal Twin, so that I wasn't missing as much information. However, Woodling does a good job of setting the stage. I will be reading the first book now though – just to watch the dynamic between Celeste and Tristan grow. As far as vampire stories go, I thought the new magical aspects they brought to the table were fun and refreshing. I enjoyed the detective portion of the story. There's romance but it's not the main focus and there's a tiny bit of spice. Overall, I thought it was beautifully written and really enjoyed it!
Huge thanks to Rockstar Book Tours and CamCat Publishing for my gifted copy!
I almost stopped reading this book multiple times... I kept hoping that it would get better.. And it did not. It felt so disjointed. It felt like I was dropped into the middle of a story, missing a lot of information AND that it could have skipped all of the time in the hollow earth and just started with her going back to work.. I appreciate what the author was trying to do, merging the super popular genres of vampire and crime novels, but I wish it was done better. Between her "preternatural" senses, and the overly stereotypical "gay best friend" and, now outdated feeling, COVID references, it was just a hard book to get through.
Woodling's novel dances between genres with a Postmodern gleefulness. She's just as comfortable gliding through an ancient manor bedecked in the lacy textures of Anne Rice as she is hunkering down in an underfunded police station ready to solve a crime. If you like police procedurals AND hobnobbing shoulder-to-shoulder with immortal versions of Queen Elizabeth and Socrates, Woodling's unconventional novel will bring a smile to your face.
My Thoughts This is truly Unique Vampire story where we follow Celeste who happens to be a newly turned Vampire. We follow her as she learns how to navigate her new powers and her new way of living and adapting all that with her job as a detective. The author did a great job with incorporating all the different characters such as vampires, shape shifters and the Immortal world. I enjoyed reading this and ended up like Celeste who was strong and did what she felt was right
The Immortal Detective is an amazing audiobook about a gifted vampiric detective named Celeste, who uses her powers to fight crime. With well-written characters and fantastical abilities, the story is engaging and action-packed, full of twists and turns. Celeste's journey in mastering her powers and using them to help people is beautifully crafted. Her adopted daughter, Raina, and flamboyant vampire nanny, Fane, add depth to the story with their entertaining and fun-filled dialogue. While I always prefer to read series books in order to better understand the characters, The Immortal Detective can still be enjoyed as a standalone book. I highly recommend and I'm going to pick up the first book in the series.
I'm a sucker for vampire fiction (see what I did there?), and this one delivered!
Not your ordinary vamp tale. In this book, we meet Celeste, a new vampire and detective whose crime chasing story is intricate and fun to follow along. It's not really the kind of mystery you solve as you're reading. It's more like being a fly on the wall of her life, and the crime solving is just a part of that life. Watching her learn to be a vampire and get used to her new powers was amusing, and I would have loved to see even more of that throughout the book. For example, when she would run smack into a wall while trying to materialize through it. 😆😆
She is often finding herself having to explain her mysterious strength, find ways to stay off surveillance cameras (as she wouldn't appear on one), and keep herself strictly on the night shift so the sunlight doesn't burn her skin.
I was also emotionally invested in her personal life. Mentors, adopted parents, adopted child-vampire, friends, lover, all of them wonderful and interesting characters!!! The vampire characters were so endearing that I wanted more books just about them and their lives! In fact, the annoying characters were the human ones. 😆
I will leave you with this. The ending will definitely have you hungry for a second book! Can we say cliffhanger? I smell a sequel...
Thanks to CamCat Books for the audiobook provided via NetGalley; this is my unbiased review.
🎧 The Immortal Detective by D.B. Wooding Narrated by Lisa Larsen CamCat Books, 21st March 2023 ⭐️⭐️
Synopsis: After Detective Celeste Crenshaw faces death and wakes up immortal, she reluctantly makes a promise to the Elders to grant immortality. But when she returns home, she battles mortal foes, and her world spirals out of control.
Review: The promise of an immortal detective and this being the first book in the series made it too hard to resist, which is why I requested to review it. It started out so well, with the line: 'The only thing worse than never waking up is waking up dead.' But then it got confusing. Celeste is transitioning into a vampire, but it seems to be in the middle of a story, and very little back story is provided. A little digging, and I learn there's a prequel called The Immortal Twin. It would've been useful to know that, and to have read that prior to this.
The detecting really gets going in the second half of the book, where it becomes much more appealing. If readers manage to stick with it until then, there's a decent story here. Listening on audio, there was no opportunity to flip back and forth between pages to check out details, which is what I'd normally do if a book confuses me. I didn't find the narrator particularly engaging. It was a disappointing listen at first, which got better towards the end.
This is a great cop drama with a twist! Our lead detective is not only female, smart, tough, but she's also now a vampire in training! An interesting twist to the usual detective drama! The plot is extremely well woven to create a murder mystery that needs to be solved, but also a fight between good and evil being fought by the vampire leaders. An engaging story with multiple layers and multiple plots. The characters were extremely well written and brought to life very well by the narrator of the audio book. I have to say the book was good, but the audio made it great by giving each character an individual voice. I can't wait to listen to more of this series!
I did finish The Immortal Detective. It didn't quite hang together for me. There were too many stories going on and the character development was virtually nonexistent. I'll pass on the next one.
This was a quick enjoyable read for me. I would like to read more from this writer. I did feel like I need to read The Immortal Twin first as it would have answered lots of questions.
I received this ARC from Booksirens and am happy to leave this review.
Detective Celeste Crenshaw has spent her entire life around vampires, so when she dies and becomes one… Well, she has some opinions about it. After she completes, basically, vampire basic training, she resumes her life as a detective, albeit on the night beat…
This was an interesting read. The world-building was incredible and the idea of some of the greatest luminaries of the world living on as vampire elders was intriguing. At the heart of this book, it was a well-done detective story, you just had to pass through a few chapters to get there. But, once it really got going, it was great and I am looking forward to the next installment.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A paranormal, police procedural mix that I enjoyed reading! The vampiric world the author created was unique and intriguing. Looking forward to the next book!!
I absolutely loved this book. Though a pretty large, I read it in a blink of an eye, because I just didn’t want to put it down. It is well written and well executed. Though there were many sub-plots, the author brought everything together beautifully. I can’t wait to read the next one!
I mainly listened to this one because it was on my hoopla library app.
This book has an interesting combination of the paranormal and police procedural mystery.
Celeste, the main character, is a Kansas City police detective who is also a vampire. She obviously works the night shift.
In the beginning of the book, Celeste becomes immortal. She is trained by a famous group of elders such as Nostradamus, Leonardo da Vinci, Queen Elizabeth, and Socrates on how to use her new skills. She also has to become disciplined to not go full vampire mode when there is a lot of blood spilled. That’s a skill she really needs being a police detective.
In the real world, Celeste is working on a case involving a sex trafficking ring. Once that’s resolved, she works on homicides that potentially could be part of a gang that may have cult influences.
The secondary characters are all quite entertaining including Fane an immortal and also nanny to another young vampire that lives with Celeste.
What a fun read! A police procedural with a paranormal twist to it. Celeste is a newly turned vampire who is working the night shift, (you know, to avoid sunlight), and chasing down some real bad guys. Adjusting to immortality while trying to hide the truth of her existence from her coworkers. Seriously great start to this new series!
Whatever the opposite of a slow-burn is- this book is just that! 🔥 Jumping straight into the action and magical lore in chapter one, we get to meet our MC, Celeste, and see our very first glimpses of Hollow Earth.
I really loved the world building of this story, as well as the descriptive language used throughout. I could see how this book was setting up for future stories to come along down the road, and I thought this was done really well!
It was fun to see Celeste learn how to fully use her powers, especially when she gets back to working her day job as a detective. If you are a fan of detective novels, vampires, and stories with fast paced action- you should absolutely check this one out!
Thank you so much to Suzy and the author for the opportunity to be a part of this tour, and receive a copy of this book to read and review!
Thank you to my partner, Suzy Approved Book Tours, and the author, D. B. Woodling. I appreciate the gifted ARC paperback, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!
I would venture to say that this read was a bit out of my comfort zone when it comes to genres. I do love the concept of vampires and have been wanting to read some stories with them, so I jumped aboard this tour. While it did start out a bit rough for me, it didn’t take long for the storyline and characters to draw me right in!
1. Unique - I loved the crime drama interspersed with vampire life. Such a unique insight into both worlds!
2. If Only - I mean really, if only all of our detectives could have the powers of the immortals. Catching criminals would prove to be a bit easier! However, don’t think that the mystery is solved quite that easily in this one!
3. Heart Strings - Not only do we get mystery and vampires, we also get love stories that span centuries and those in the present.
4. Found Family - I guess when you are immortal, you are bound to need your found family. It was easy to feel the love between all of the characters.
5. Cliffhanger - We are left with Celestine’s decision made but not spoken and then the final blow - nice work on this cliffhanger, Ms. Woodling! You have me impatient for more!
Fans of crime and detective dramas and fans of vampires will enjoy this one! Don’t hesitate to get your copy today!
This book was a little disappointing for me, although I may give the first book in the series a go and read this book again via hard copy.
Unfortunately I found the story a little confusing at first and wasn't quite sure what was happening, however, it did improve as the story progressed. I did enjoy some of the characters, especially Celeste.
I quite enjoyed the storyline once I knew what was happening but found the narration a little emotionless which made it difficult to imagine the characters.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers, author and narrator for the opportunity to listen to this ARC Audiobook.
