Starfall by Keira Andrews, 20 pages: 2 stars. The pitfall of short stories by people who usually don't write them is not being able to fully flesh out the world and characters in so few pages.
Rescuing the Writer by Nora Phoenix, 90 pages: 1.5 stars. Not very enjoyable. I literally did not care about the relationship at all.
Cupcakes and Confessions by Jax Calder, 50 pages: 4 stars. Good dialogue, a complete story with some backstory woven throughout. A lovely short story.
Big Difference by Ana Ashley, 91 pages: 3 stars. Decent characters, a good amount of world-building for such a short story.
Among Friends by Annabeth Albert, 75 pages: 3 stars. Another short story with decent character work and good pacing.
The unlisted book I read was "Saturnalia" by Rey Andújar. 102 pages. Translated by Kolin Jordan.
One of the quotes on the back of the book: "Take a trip through the seedy underbelly of the Caribbean experience. Explore places you wont find listed in the guidebooks, the secret alleyways where tour guides won't take you. Rey Andújar paint a picture of melancholy, sadness, confusion, exploration, hatred, and revenge all set before a backdrop of a region and a people struggling with modernity." - Andrew Hertzberg
My review: I found it exciting, gritty and poetic. Small slices and scenes of disturbing and intense lives.
'The Heartless Alpha's Beloved Luna' - Jane Above Story (290 / 372 chapters read - DNF)
I wanted to enjoy this as usually it is a nice change of pace to read books written by people online instead of always relying on published authors. Sometimes there is a passion for writing that fades with authors who are publishing multiple stories over the course of a year.
However, it ended up being a frustrating read. The storyline had potential at the start, bit it quickly became repetitive and dragged out with unnecessary drama. After a while, it felt less like storytelling and more like deja vu.
Rather than showing growth or learning from past mistakes, Avery kept making the same choices that led her straight back into harm's way. This made it hard to stay invested, because the stakes stopped feeling meaningful when the pattern never changed.
The story had serious potential, but the lack of character development and plot stucture made it fall flat.
touchdown by my friend ethan i wasn't going to list this because it was 60 short pages written by my friend when he was in like third grade, but y'know what, i read it. it was technically a book. compelling story. i laughed so much and i even cried (from the laughing, but that doesn't matter). some plot points felt very obvious, others were out of nowhere. i'm not sure dying a few hours after a football hit to the helmeted head and then ribs is medically accurate. there were way too many statistics after each football game; i was reading aloud to a few other people and got very tired of repeating numbers that meant nonsense to me. josh and taylor's sadomasochistic relationship really saved the story, with them becoming friends again just for josh to die soon after being a heartbreaking ending...but they played a lot of madden and threw the balls DEEP many times!!!
Mail Order Misgivings by Jessica B. Brown - December 2023 (last book of the year?) - 5 pages - 4.5 ★ Short and sweet! I loved the faith content.
Love, Marjorie by Jessica B. Brown - March 2024 - 62 pages - 4.5 ★ The loveliest Anne of Green Gables feels!!! 😭 What a precious story.
Christmas with the Moons by Anna Rose Johnson - December 2024 - 48 pages - Sweet but slightly unbelievable, a bit of Blue Castle vibes, the MC was so-so.
Christmas with Marjorie by Jessica B. Brown - December 2024 - 35 pages - A lovely sequel! Though I do wish she'd shown her aunt and father cheering up ;)
Waxing and Waiting by Alison Tebo - Feb? 2025 - pages - (full rtc)
Finished "Grounds for Suspicion" and with it the collection of 6 cozy murder mystery novellas by Maisy Marple.
Individually, they are each all right. Collectively, very formulaic, and by the end, some elements had even repeated themselves, including ***minor spoiler*** detectives either approving of, offering a job to, or asking out the amateur sleuth. ***minor spoiler complete***.
They were entertaining enough and were free of grammar and punctuation errors that often plague freebie ebooks, but one would have been sufficient. They all read very similarly, and had equal issues with logic, lack of interiority of the main character, and continuity errors.
