Mountain Man Apprentice: Justice: A Mountain Man Adventure

Rate this book
The first adventure in a brand new mountain man series from Ash Lingam!

When Brick Hammer left Illinois, it was because he had no reasons left to stay. His father had died the year before, and his wife and two children passed away from disease just before he sold everything, leaving him financially well off. With his newfound funds and no family to care for, he decided to complete a dream he had since he was a small boy—to become a mountain man as he had read in the nickel novels of Kit Carson and Davy Crocket.

He left Denver heavily equipped and armed to the teeth. As he began seeking adventure, he trapped and hunted in the Rocky Mountains. While alone in the wilderness, he ran into an unexpected situation that would change his life forever. A wizened old man with snow-white hair cared for him until his health returned, and they forged a bonding relationship. Grizz Adam James had lived in his cabin, lost in the wilderness, for decades. Brick was near death when Grizz found him, and he adopted him as his apprentice; this is where it all began.

Ash Lingam was born and raised in Southern Ohio, not far from the mighty Ohio River. He had somewhat of an isolated upbringing on a family farm with his sisters. His best friends were his horse, Sugar, and his grandfather.
Born in 1886, the family patriarch grew crops, raised cattle, and doted on the young boy. At his grandfather’s side, Ash learned about livestock and firearms at an early age. His grandad carried an old Colt with him at all times, helping spawn a young boy’s dreams of yesteryear.
Ash was only eight years old when his grandad taught him how to trap muskrats to prevent them from draining the farm’s ponds. He gave him a double-barreled shotgun at twelve and taught him how to hunt to put food on the table.
It wasn’t long before Ash was breaking horses. His spirited Tennessee Walker never allowed any other rider on her back. Together, they searched through the plowed fields in the spring, looking for Miami Indian arrowheads to add to his grandfather’s ample collection.
Ash’s family was among the early settlers in pre-Revolutionary America. He has traced his lineage back to around 1746 when his ancestors immigrated from Europe to the aspiring American Colonies.
A retired marketing executive, Ash devotes his spare time to training police dogs and writing novels. He has found his niche in the Western, historical fiction, and adventure genres. With his vast vault of experience, he never runs out of sources for new stories. He has lived in eleven different countries and worked in a total of forty-six,
To date, Ash has written approximately 130 novels, short stories, and poems. More than one hundred of his eclectic titles help the American frontier come alive for his readers.

As I started to read this book I realized I had already read it some time ago. What I didn't remember at the time though was reading the whole series of 10 books by this author. When I got about 3/4 through it,(the first book) I realized why I hadn't read the whole series. Ash Lingam's accounts of the history of this time of our nations past all of a sudden made me realize he doesn't know his history. Ft. Boise was not established until about 1834 which doesn't jive with his 1824 time frame. The war of 1812 was known back then as the 2nd war of independence from Britain. Calling it the war of 1812 is like calling the 2nd world war the war of 1941. The US Cavalry was not involved in this area of the west at the time this story was to have taken place. I guess I am a bit of a history buff and when it is so blatantly off it bothers me. Also, the beginning of the book reads suspiciously like the movie "Jeremiah Johnson" of the early 70's staring Robert Redford and Will Geer.

For Brick, coming to the wilderness, felt like the only choice he had. Meeting Grizz, makes his new role, as a mountain man, a bit easier. That doesn't mean readers can think this is a mild tale, it isn't. Being a mountain man comes with a lot of hardship and danger. The author does a good job telling the story of life in the wilderness, and it is reminiscent of tales of the true mountain men who made their way into the history books. This is a well written tale that is a reader friendly tale that is a quick, exciting read.

change of pace

As usual Ash Lingham spins a good yarn.
New stories of an eastern businessman who loses his family to death and heads west to become a mountain man.
Grizzly bears, Crow Indians and a pair of foolish Army captains make a great story.
Onto installment two
