Meghan Holloway found her first Nancy Drew mystery in a sun-dappled attic at the age of eight and subsequently fell in love with the grip and tautness of a well-told mystery. She flew an airplane before she learned how to drive a car, did her undergrad work in Creative Writing in the sweltering south, and finished a Masters of Library and Information Science in the blustery north. She spent a summer and fall in Maine picking peaches and apples, traveled the world for a few years, and did a stint fighting crime in the records section of a police department.

She now lives in the foothills of the Appalachians with her standard poodle and spends her days as a scientist with the requisite glasses but minus the lab coat.

I have been anxiously awaiting Killing Field, the last book in the Hector Lewis trilogy, and I wasn’t disappointed. Ms. Holloway has penned a gripping finale to this superb trilogy.

In the fifteen years since his wife, Winona and daughter, Emma, disappeared, Hector Lewis had never given up his search to find out what happened to them. Now that he has conclusive proof that his wife was murdered, he is determined to find out who was responsible. However, when a young girl turns up in Raven’s Gap claiming to be Emma, it will not only put both their lives in danger, but also reveal the truth of what happened all those years ago.

Hector is such a wonderfully flawed and complex character, always so cold and unfeeling. His obsession with finding his missing wife and daughter was driven by feelings of guilt and remorse because of his failings as a husband and father. Now, learning the full extent of his wretched childhood, starved of love by a mother who hated him, I could see why such experiences had left him emotionally scarred, believing himself incapable of love.

Born into extreme poverty on an Indian Reservation, Annie Between Lodges was only six years old when her mother disappeared without trace and eleven when her great-grandmother died, leaving Annie and, her younger sister, Kimi, to fend for themselves. Annie had done everything in her power to protect her sister but, when Kimi is murdered, Annie knows that the information she holds will put her own life in danger. She turns to the one man she believes can not only protect her but also help obtain justice for her sister.

Annie was such a sympathetic character because she had so much responsibility to bear at such a young age. The flashbacks reveal the harsh reality of her childhood, and the desperate lengths she was forced to go to keep her sister with her. I understood the deep-seated guilt she carries for not keeping Kimi safe as she had promised, and I also felt her regret for the hurt she had caused by lying about her identity

I enjoyed seeing the relationship gradually developing between Hector and Annie as the story progresses. Each offers the other something they desperately needed and I must admit that I had tears in my eyes at one point in the Epilogue.

As in the previous two books, Ms. Holloway effectively employs first-person narrative for the main protagonists. Being privy to their thoughts, feelings and motivations adds to the suspense and tension. There’s plenty of action, danger and shocking revelations as the plot lines converge to a nail-biting climax.

The main secondary characters all enrich the story, particularly Betty and Ed (Winona’s parents), Jake Decker (her brother), Maggie Silva and her son, William, and not forgetting Hector’s dog, Frank and the ghost-like white wolf. It was heartwarming to see the reconciliation between Winona’s parents and Hector and Ed and Betty’s caring attitude towards Annie, despite the fact that she wasn’t their granddaughter. Maggie Silva wasn’t afraid to tell Hector a few home truths, while her son, William, and Jake Decker, provide valuable assistance to Hector in his investigation into Kimi’s murder.

I admire Ms. Holloway’s courage for including controversial contemporary issues as an integral part of the storyline.

The Epilogue provides a very satisfying conclusion to both this book and the trilogy. Although tinged with an element of sadness, there is also redemption and feeling of hope for the future.

MY VERDICT: A complex and thrilling finale to this trilogy. Highly recommended.

This was a wonderful book and I enjoyed it very much. At first, it seemed like I wouldn't be able to "keep up" with the different characters but before I finished the first chapter I was more involved and hooked. It's very hard for me to give a brief synopsis as I tend to prattle and give too much information out...as in spoiler. So on that note I'll say the main character Hector, lost his wife and child some fifteen years ago and they hadn't been found. Some say he killed them and disposed of their bodies. Then enter a young girl who claims to be his long, lost daughter. The story evolves from there and it was a great read. I have recommended it to a friend already and she has it now. I will recommend to all... Thank you!!

Received as a Goodreads giveaway. Quick suspense read, characters were interesting and it moved rapidly. Liked it a lot, but did feel some missing backstory, as this is book #3 in the series. Would certainly pick up another.

A fantastic ending to a superb trilogy! Excellent pacing and action. The best shocking revelation. The most realistic and complex characters, including the secondary ones. The Native American aspect enhanced my reading enjoyment 100%. Meghan Holloway books will always be on my auto buy list.

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. The story is promising, but the writing style is not one I care for.
