The paparazzi were on my ass 24/7 and I needed a bit of breathing room—an escape from the madness—before the media frenzy begins.
Sure, I could have gone to a secluded cabin in the woods—but I didn’t want to be bored out of my mind. I’d seen enough wide open spaces as a kid from Texas to last me a lifetime.
So instead, I let my agent hook me up with a modest house in the burbs where we didn’t think anyone would find me hiding in plain sight.
I’d have a roommate; but supposedly, she was going to give me space. Stay out of my way and respect my boundaries. According to my agent, I wouldn’t hear a peep from her.
Wrong. He was wrong about everything and now my life was never going to be the same.
* THE SECRET ROOMMATE is a slow-burn, stand-alone, opposites attract romance
Sara Ney is the USA Today Bestselling Author of the How to Date a Douchebag series, and is best known for her sexy, laugh-out-loud New Adult romances. Among her favorite vices, she includes: iced latte's, historical architecture and well-placed sarcasm. She lives colorfully, collects vintage books, art, loves flea markets, and fancies herself British.
I am really struggling to write this review, which is annoying because I really enjoyed the book. And I am a huge Sara Ney fan. But I just don't know what to say, the story was super cute, and I really loved both characters. I read the first book in the series and didn't realise this was the fourth, so I read it as a standalone with no issues except my own personal FOMO that kicked in when I realised, I had missed two books.
Posey and Duke were both awesome. Very different people who on paper don't seem to go together but both of them had beautiful genuine personalities. Duke was a little thoughtless but living with a husband and son who are exactly the same I saw it for what it was, complete obliviousness. And I actually liked him more for it, because as soon as he realised how his actions were received, he immediately apologized and explained.
Both of them were just so nice and completely themselves. There was no pretence or unnecessary drama, and I liked getting the story in dual point of view and getting to know them individually and through the eyes of each other.
Duke is a super famous football player who wants to lay low for a while, so his agent finds a place to stay in a quiet suburb with his girlfriend's best friend, Posey. Posey is an unassuming good girl kindergarten teacher, but while she deals with 5/6 year olds all day, nothing prepares her for Duke, who's used to being waited on hand and foot.
The Secret Roommate is super cute read by Sara New that has some great laugh out loud moments. I really ended up liking Duke despite how immature and self absorbed he appeared at the beginning, lol. He's very much the protector and his no filter mouth completely grew on me. He also could be super intuitive and I liked how deep he was when it came to his relationships. Posey is super sweet and earnest, so Duke's flippant attitude really grated on her at first. In the end, I liked how they both balanced each other out. She centered him and he loosened her up. The story is fun, well written, and moved well. It is a slow burn, but there is a ton of chemistry between them. The HFN kind of leaves things up in the air, but epilogues give a great expectation of a HEA. Overall, not my favorite book in the series, but definitely worth picking up!
I love these two!!! They are so cute together. Duke, the big hulking, famous grumpy football player and Posey, the adorable, petite, bubbly kindergarten teacher.
Sara Ney is always a go to for a fabulous easy read. Is this the smuttiest book ever.. nope. But it's also not meant to be and I'm just fine with that because she gives us so much, I honestly don't miss or look for it like I normally would.
Duke and Posey give of major oldies been married for a lifetime kind of energy. I wouldn't even say it's enemies to lovers, it feels more like an old married couple who are sick of each other's antics but also love to hate them and love them all over again. It just has that feel.
Duke is cute in a little arrogant, a little sweet and a whole lot of doesn't think kind of way.
Posey is a yes from me. By day the sweet teacher, by evening a little terror who'll go toe to toe with a 6ft giant cake thief.
On paper these pair are a no. I'm talking so completely opposite and yet they balanced one another perfectly. His silly and her serious made for some epic bickering, a tonne of tension and some real sweet moments of vulnerability. They had great chemistry and it just worked even when it shouldn't. Now there were a few moments of WTF where I felt like the balls of my eyes were deceiving me. But in true Sara fashion she wraps it all up perfectly in a way that leaves you crying in laughter and oh so satisfied.
It's another win for me. If you're just looking for something easy that will make you laugh hard, swoon a little and maybe curse a time of 6.. this is for you.
The Secret Roommate is a perfect romcom sports romance.
Sara wrote this story with the perfect blend of humor, sports and romance. I devoured this book from start to finish in one day because it was so entertaining and yet authentic too.
I loved Posey and Duke. They are both very straight forward people but in different ways. Duke is used to being in the spotlight so he's ecstatic about being able to lay low and not have cameras in his face and people constantly following him. Posey has agreed to Duke being her roommate for a two weeks for her friend.
Their initial meet was hilarious and I love that they both held nothing back from the get-go. Posey definitely kept Duke on his toes while Duke definitely surprised Posey is so many ways. This is definitely a story with the notion "Don't judge a book by its cover."
The banter and exchanges between the characters was hilarious and kept things very light and easy. There was minimal drama and I loved how these two navigated each situation. They were both mature and I love that Sara never strayed from who they were to add unnecessary angst or drama to the story. It's what kept the story authentic and real.
The Secret Roommate is definitely one of my favorite Sara Ney stories to date.
4 Star Review The Secret Roommate (Accidentally in Love #4) by Sara Ney The Secret Roommate was an entertaining read that ticked a number of boxes for me and was a good addition to the Accidentally in Love series. The chemistry between Posey and Duke sizzled in this friends/roommates to lovers story by Sara Ney.
I really liked Duke, he’s quirky and often does things without thinking but he is endearing. The characters were easy to relate to and likeable. Their relationship is not always smooth but their journey was entertaining.
Duke is in need of a hideout until an announcement is made and when it is arranged for him to stay with Posey he has no idea how this temporary escape from the paparazzi that are following him will change his life forever.
The banter between them was witty and at times snarky but it made for an enjoyable read,
I was very, very close to tossing this book into the freezer within the first few chapters. I mean, my annoyance with a certain character skyrocketed. So, I took a break and prayed that things would get better, and thankfully they did, but it was a close one…and in the end, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have minded more time with Posey and Duke to see how their relationship evolves.
Posey and Duke…these two definitely took me for a ride. Posey, I honestly loved. She is a sweetheart and may come across as a “good girl” but she isn’t a doormat by any means. Duke drove me batshitcrazy for most of the book, and believe me when I say ~ I want to verbal vomit about all he does ~ but that would ruin all the fun for you. So, yeah, he had me wanting to reach out and Gibbs smack him a lot BUT then he had those moments where it made it hard not to like/love the guy. As for their journey, it was definitely unique. They don’t necessarily make sense, but they fit. As for that huge sinkhole in their journey…total WTF moment, but the groveling ~ while a bit awkward ~ was pretty good and I’m happy with how things worked out in the end.
In the end, this was a fun read. I really liked catching up with Molly and Eli and seeing how their relationship is going. Mrs. Galvin was awesome! But it’s Dallas, Drew and Drake that I’m crossing my toes get their own HEA’s down the road because they piqued my interest and I’d love to see where the world takes them.

You guys, Duke is a goof! He's a big oaf, doesn't always think before he acts...who eats a cake in the fridge without asking?! Like, who does this stuff?! I'd say his love story with Posey was friends to lovers, but they're only roommates for a couple weeks. It was NOT insta, though. LOL. They butted heads for sure. I think some of my fave moments were when they were on a dating app talking.
So, it's low angst, good story, but that last 30% of the book? First I was SO upset by how he handled things, then I mostly laughed all the way til the end. Like laughed out loud and had people looking at me.
GAH. These two were just what I needed. Posey agrees to let one of Eli's clients stay with her now that Molly has moved out. It's just for two weeks and he needs to lay low. Duke is being transferred to Texas from New York and before the announcement he just needs a place to stay where he can go unnoticed. Duke doesn't get out much, he doesn't people well, as one would say. He and Posey get off on the wrong foot after he "breaks" into her house and it just goes downhill from there. The back and forth, the banter, the pranks, all turning into more, it just made my belly do flip flops. I thought Posey was so fun and Duke was just the sweetest, after he realized she wasn't going to wait on him hand and foot. Their time together flew by and I didn't want to put this one down. True to Sara's style, she had me laughing out loud and gave me all the butterflies.
I really enjoyed Duke and Posey's story. Duke started out a bit rough but he totally grew on me. Posey is a strong, independent gal. Sara Ney's stories always have the best flirting and banter. And she really gets you to see how the characters start to notice each other in a romantic way. I needed a lighter story and this one delivered. It's fairly low on angst. You get a big romantic gesture and a nice HEA.
I’ve been enjoying this series - Accidentally in Love - of which this is the fourth book. The premise of all the books is that it’s about strong, single women all falling in love accidentally. This book, like those before it, stands alone and the romance is self-contained. Like the first two in the series were linked in some way, so are the last book (The Make Out Artist) and this one in that Posey from this book was roommates with Molly from the last. But you definitely don’t have to have read any of the previous ones to read, understand and enjoy this one.
The premise of this book sounded absolutely delicious to me - I am partial to a grumpy man - even better that he’s a big, burly footballer hiding out - and pairing him with a sweet kindergarten teacher sounded perfection. Of course both our characters have layers but that’s essentially what we get. I do feel I was tricked into reading an older woman / younger man book (he’s 24 and she’s 29/30) - which I do tend to pass on. It’s still not my favourite and it did give me problems in the book - but I got over it. Mostly.
Posey doesn’t really come across as the sweet, shy kindergarten teacher other than that’s Duke both expects and sees when he looks at her. Sure, she might be a little bit of a goody two shoes but I completely was on her side, especially at the beginning. I mean, what kind of monster sees a cake, wants it and just eats it? I was fuming on Posey’s behalf. To be fair, her age is rarely mentioned in relation to Duke’s age but I did feel it was evident in the way they acted. Posey was clearly a stable, functioning adult. I liked her, but she didn’t set my world on fire.
Duke was a little bit more difficult to pin down my feelings on. When he first arrived at Posey’s house he was an absolute asshole - but for some reason I liked him and his antics. He was a lot entitled and a little clueless and his straightforward manner made me laugh. It was when he came up against Posey’s sensibleness that I started to judge him. Or, it might have been when his age was revealed. It might even be when he ate that damned cake. Still not over that, if I’m honest. By the end of the book I liked him again but the age gap still clouded my thoughts of Posey and Duke as a couple.
Putting that aside, there was definitely chemistry between our pair - first coming across as dislike, then as friends and finally as lovers. While again, it didn’t set my world on fire, I liked it and it definitely ramped up when we finally get going.
The book is billed as a slow burn and it’s definitely that. While that’s fine - I can do insta-love or slow burn - in this book I would have preferred the slow burn to be shorter so that we could get more time with the couple nearer the end. As I’ve found is often the case in Sara Ney’s books, we reach the end without any declarations of love or any firm plans for the future. The couple are clearly established, and we’re happy they’re happy - so I’d still class it as a HEA, but my problems with the age gap definitely made me need more from this couple than was shown.
This is still a good read and Sara Ney’s writing, as always, is bright, interesting and engaging. Not my favourite of her stories or in this series, but still a fun read and one I’m giving 4 stars.
Once again Sara Ney has given me a wonderfully funny and cute and fun rom-com to fall in love with! And she’s also left us with some new characters that we might want their stories as well. Duke’s brothers anyone?
It’s fun reading about characters on a dating app after following the author’s own experiences over the past few years. It makes me wonder how much of what was real she might have thrown into the date/f-boy that Posey ended up with in this story. And oh, Duke, gotta love Duke. He was definitely so annoying at first. And his chapter came off as a total a-hole like Molly had told Posey. But really, he was a good guy. I mean of course, we want our hero to be a good guy, right? The descriptions of his accent throughout the story made me think this would be a fun audiobook if you got the right male narrator with a perfect Texas accent.
But just like the rest of this series, there wasn’t the drama for drama’s sake that bugs me so many times. Even the things that were misunderstandings were figured out in a reasonable, realistic way, that made the story just perfect for me. The steamy scenes were hot, and it was definitely an interesting way to not do the usual condom check but still kind of give a head tip to that. Although I have to think with him being worried about women wanting him for what he could give them that he might have been a little more careful with that? Maybe he just trusted her enough and knew deep down that if something did happen, it would be what he wanted.
I loved Posey too. While it wasn’t a huge age gap, I was happy to see a little bit older woman story here. Oh yeah, and I am totally with Posey too about cringing at the word panties. That has always been a cringe word for me. Along with moist. The third word she said bothered her I don’t remember, because I’ve not heard that one complained about before. The jokes the two played on each other, their banter, arguments, all of it was a blast! Another fun sweet steamy romance from Sara Ney.
This is somewhat cute. The premise is good. The whole package is just average. There were some good aspects. The FMC is fine and he is after a ways. The scenes with his brothers are good. So is the part where she goes on a date and it ends badly. There are some mildly funny bits.
I think I've read all of her books and this is probably not the worst, but close.
As with most authors, I don't like the way she tried to paint what a southerner is like. Yes, we still drop Gs, but thst isn't just the south. The drawl is still there, but not like it once was. The accent is definitely still a thing. But the vocabulary and sayings aren't. Sure, people still throw out a saying every now and then but not often. And few people hit all of the stereotypical characteristics. I've lived in Georgia my whole life, so Texas may be different.
Some parts of his personality didn't add up. If he lived on a ranch his whole life, he would have behaved differently. And that is one southern thing she didn't throw in. A southern boy's mama (though most people say mom, not mama) would have taught him some manners. You would not pull out a whole decorated cake and eat it without asking. Respect is something still taught. Sure, his football career has given him quite the ego, but the cake thing was over the top.
Speaking of the ranch, he mentally states they didn't work the ranch but later his brother says they've had plenty of practice mending fences on the ranch. While working a ranch probably means more taking care of crops and animals, it would probably mean he didn't do repairs, either.
There are definitely some editing errors. As another reviewer pointed out, spicket and wa-lah are not real words. I didn't notice as I read it, but did notice other things like missing words. I don't understand why authors aren't writing with apps that catch things like spicket. Grammarly is great. So many programs would have caught these some of these errors and ones I see made by lots of authors.
If you only read a book every now and then, skip this one. If you read often and don't need to worry about reading something that may not be your favorite, this one may be a good choice.
Oh, this story! I was cracking up all the way through. It was hilarious!
"Much as I hate to admit it, it's been fun having him around. Might even miss him when he's gone."
When Josephine 'Posey' Kettner agrees to let Duke Colter hide out at her home for a couple of weeks, she doesn't expect to host a giant man-child, who eats everything in sight and expects her to be his personal assistant. Honestly, if she rolled her eyes any harder, they'd fall out of her head! LOL. However, as the days pass, she starts to understand that underneath all those annoyingly gorgeous muscles, irresistible Southern accent, and irritating entitled air is a startlingly mature guy, who has his head screwed on and cares very much about her.
"Even if all we're going to do is have sex, her yelling at me turns me into a sappy f*cker for some ungodly reason."
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a hoot! I was laughing out loud constantly. Duke could be adorably clueless but then swooningly chivalrous. He was pretty knowing but also sweetly insecure when it came to Posey. She came across as prim, practical and sensible yet had a wicked sense of humour. Her dirty jokes had me giggling, especially at Duke's reaction. LOL. She loves to scold him and he loves to rile her up. They had fabulous chemistry and were pretty darn hot together. I absolutely adored them and would love a further epilogue of them in the future.
I received a copy of this arc in exchange for my honest review. This is my first read by this author, and man she did NOT dissapoint. This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers romance with a super hot football player thrown in ! Duke is leaving his current NFL team and beginning with a new one. He needs a place out of town to stay away from the public for two weeks before all the news gets out. He is set up to stay at Posey’s house for the two weeks, neither of them knowing the other one. Things don’t start off well with the two, as they are completely two different type of people. The nagging and banter between the two was HYSTERICAL. This was , by FAR, the funniest book I have ever read in my life. It added so much to this story! The characters are amazing, each having their own hilarious qualities, and they had amazing character development. I loved the chemistry between the two and the build up to their fall for one another. Everything about this was fantastic. An amazing quick binge worthy read that will keep you laughing and and smiling until the last epilogue. I highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received an advanced review copy, receipt of which does not impact my review.
The Secret Roommate was such a delightful romcom! Posey and Duke may just be my favorite couple in this series.
Posey is a 29-year old kindergarten teacher in the Chicago suburbs who is used to her orderly, slightly boring life. As her friends are coupling up, she now lives alone in her friend Molly’s house. Molly’s boyfriend, Eli, is a sports agent and his newest contract, Duke, needs to hide out for a few weeks. Enter Posey’s spare bedroom…
Duke is 24 and a little clueless and immature, but he has a heart of gold underneath.
Opposites definitely attract, and their back and forth was so funny.
I also loved Duke’s relationship with his younger brothers & seeing Molly, Kate, and Eli again from earlier in the series (though it totally works as a standalone)! 4.5 starts me rounded up.
4.5 Stars for The Secret Roommate ( Accidentally In Love #4) I loved everything about this fun, entertaining read and it’s a wonderful addition to the series. This is Duke and Posey’s friends/roommates to lovers journey and boy do they have a story to tell. Duke needs to get away, he needs to escape the paparazzi what he didn’t expect was his roommate to chance his life completely…….. This book has all the feels, it’s full of witty banter with characters you cant help bonding with, its romantic and passionate and its got a few twists and turns you don’t see coming. A quirky, entertaining read that will appeal to all romantic comedy lovers.
Duke and Posey's slow burn romance was a classic Sara Ney book. She does such a wonderful job creating interesting and entertaining characters you can love. This story does a great job combining the sweet and steamy moments with ones that will make you laugh.
It was fun watching these two opposite personalities fall for one another as Duke gets more than he expected when he moves in temporarily. The banter and writing make this an easy, entertaining read that's hard to put down.
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
Duke Colter needs a place to hide whilst he switches football teams. His agent finds him a room with his girlfriend's best friend, Posey Kettner. What starts out as adversaries sharing a house becomes friends that tease and laugh. The chemistry between them grows but whatsapped when Duke has to join his new team? Will the friendship they have stay the course or will they forget each other? This was another hilarious read from Sara with characters that make you giggle whilst hoping the chemistry between them turns I to something more! Can't wait for Sara's next book
4.5 stars. From the outset, we have Duke, larger than life and with the body to match, 'breaking into' Posey's home where he is planning to hide out for a couple of weeks. What starts as the clash of sweet, singleton Posey, with football's version of a small, tactless mountain developed into something much more. Scenes that are ridiculously funny..cue cake... , Posey's outrage at Duke's behaviour, the growing attraction, crazy text convers from adjoining rooms, all conspire to bring you a book of warmth and charm. I loved both of them so much! I winder if those brothers will get a book or two? Fabulous 💖💖💖💖💖
Are you looking for a fun RomCom with a ton of banter? Do not look any further than The Secret Roommate by Sara Ney.
Couldn’t put it down until I read the whole book. Laughed myself stupid at some of the antics and dialogue between Posey and Duke. A very well-written enemies to lovers sports romance. I loved the flow and dialogue and tension between these two as they were acquainted to living with one another. Plus Duke’s southern drawl… Holy smokes!! That was so sexy
I couldn't wait to get started on this as soon as it hit my e-reader and I didn't surface until I got to the end (much to the detriment of my work projects). I have to say, I wasn't exactly a fan of Duke at the start of the book, mostly because of his initial interaction with Posey, but it didn't take long for me to actually start to like and him and become a fan. Their initial meeting wasn't exactly cute, but I still got a kick out of the whole scenario. I wasn't entirely sure about Posey at the start, I thought she was going to be some sort of head in the clouds, overly passive type of character, but man, she definitely blew my assessment out the water by the way she deftly handled Duke and his shenanigans. It's safe to say these two weren't exactly....enamored of each other at the start, but I loved seeing the evolution of their feelings for each other over the course of the book.
Kindergarten teacher suddenly becomes a roommate to a brooding professional football player. What could go wrong?
It was a cute story that started out promising. I enjoyed the banter between Posey and Duke, but that quickly fizzled out. I was hoping they'd keep up the charade throughout most of the story. What can I say, I like when characters are spitfires.
I listened to this story via audio which I enjoyed.
Sara Ney just took some of the best tropes, mixed them up, and created an addictive read! I literally read it in one day! Enemies to friends to lovers, opposites attract, secret relationship - Duke and Posey's story was everything I hoped for and more! Duke is loud, large and unapologetically...bold and brazen. BUT he brings out this other side to Posey, who is a kindergarten teacher that is normally calm and reserved. The banter between these two is so entertaining! I can't choose a favorite part, but the cake scene, the hammock incident, the con artist neighbor, are some of my favorites! While you can easily read and enjoy this story without reading the previous stories in this series, I highly suggest reading the previous ones first. You won't regret it. Sara Ney writes the best binge-worthy stories.
So. I guess 3 1/2 stars. He's kind of oblivious, which I guess is supposed to represent his being younger, less cosmopolitan... But makes him feel like he's never been in a relationship before.
And then... What's with using withdrawal for contraception! Like what?!
I loved Duke and Posey! Sara Ney is one of my favorite authors to read when I just need a fun, sweet, cute read and she definitely delivered with this one. The banter, the scares, the swoony moments...sigh *Chefs kiss*. Absolutely adored it!
The whole story from start to finish was funny and entertaining. I loved the progression of this hate to love romance and I absolutely loved seeing Duke transform into a caring guy. He really grew up a lot from the first to chapter to the last. It was a little dicey there for a moment, but Posey really laid into him when he was being a jerk and it woke him up.
My one complaint is that it held a lot of similarities with Jock Road. Particularly how Posey kept commenting on Duke's accent. It was a bit in Jock Road that I absolutely hated because it was mentioned almost every single time Jackson talked, so in this one I did roll my eyes the first time it popped up. However, I will say that it didn't happen nearly as often as it did in JR. But please, for the love of southern bookworms everywhere, please stop.
Overall, I highly recommend this book if you've loved Ney's other books. I'll definitely revisit it in the future, especially if the audio has good narrators!
