4.5 Shheeeeeshhhhh that was quite a spicy debut!!! Honestly I really enjoyed this story, I didn’t even realize it was a debut until after finishing so writing wise bravo!! Let me start by say I either read kindle books in rapid speed or so slow and this month…clear it was slow. So with that being said this book took me awhileeeee to get through but definitely wasn’t the stories fault. Overall I found it so interesting, there was a lot of twists and turns making this a very fun romance novel. This had a lot of tropes that I know people are skeptical of/don’t like butttt I honestly think this book did it really well. The mix of characters was amazing, there was like a bit of a mystery/suspended aspect thrown in, not enough to call it a thriller but definitely a fun twist! Dean and Kaia were really good characters. Both strong individually and really well together. Their relationship felt real, it made sense, very much gave off the “touch herself and i’ll kill you” and like I said before I thought it was done very well. Also Deans dad was such a cute and wholesome add to the book, I loved the chapters he was in. There were so many lines that I highlighted in this book and I absolutely love the writing I can’t wait to read more Kane! Overall really enjoyed this book, it surprised me I would say it’s definitely worth the read!
To say this book had me in a chokehold I’d an understatement!!!!! I looooved this book my new book boyfriend is definitely Dean King, they way he treats Kaia ugh just made my heart melt. I loved it because besides it being a romance book it’s also a little bit of mystery and the little sun genres make it more interezting. Made me want to keep reading, when I wasn’t reading It I was thinking about what was going to happen next. This book definitely cured the book slump I was in. Such a good read!! Hopefully a soon to be series?!?!?!
I appreciated Carmen Kane's knowledge on the film industry. She knows her stuff.
I'm always iffy about age-gap romances, but Kane introduces the consequences of the relationship early on. I will say, however, that the repercussions of their relationship could have been fleshed out more. The third act of the story felt a bit muddled with the introduction of Janet and the side character dynamics. I would have preferred their main focus be their main problem (i.e. the school finding out their relationship and firing the professor—rightfully so—and then the MC struggling to find work because of the scandal).
That being said, the main characters felt real. Like the MC felt like a 22 year old and had a youthful, prideful mindset. The love interest felt 36—especially with his stance on social media and how younger people use it.
Favorite character hands down was Kenneth King.
My reason for bumping this down to nearly 3 stars—aside from the third act drama—is because the characters are racially ambiguous (which in itself is fine), but the way they talked about being mixed at some parts just felt like a diss to their Black identity. They want to be seen as more than their skin color? Great! They want to be be seen as their other identities while belittling themselves and the stereotypes Black people are connected to? Not so great.
*NOTE: I'd also like to add that I'm not usually a contemporary romance reader. This exceeding 3 stars (which is usually as high as I go with contemporary romance) says enough about Kane's storytelling. This was her first novel and I'm impressed. If she has other work, I will be looking forward to it.*
I thought this book was going to be something else completely based on the TikTok videos. It was not, very instalove but filled with I felt just unnecessary drama. The spice was pretty good but was missing the vibes I thought were in the book.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book, even when all these mfers were getting on my nerves and being foolish. While the insta-love might be too instant for folks, some people just know when they've met their one, and Dean & Kaia knew. Their chemistry was cookingggggg and the ups and downs and revelations they experienced were what made their love work for them. The progression of their story was *chef's kiss* even when shit kept hitting the fan and swinging everywhere.
The pacing was well done, progressing over a few months with a whole lot of stuff happening. The character development was strong, with hints about different aspects of the major characters being thrown out and there being some pay-off to them. I wasn't a fan of the tragic biracial/"woe is me because I'm mixed & don't know where I belong" moments at all because good God girl, get a grip, but it only appeared a few times (which shows how unnecessary it was to the overall plot and those characters' arcs) so it's not a lingering thought.
I cannot wait to dig into Carmen's next book (even though it's fuck Olive & Ten)!
I really tried to get through this book okay I tried but besides the completely stupid and unrealistic premise, the dialogue was awful. It’s like the faux deep shit you read from a 5th graders poetry journal. The plot left a lot to be desired at least what I understood so far and there were no characters that I liked so your left suffering through this book. I honestly don’t always hate professor student, but like the professor didn’t feel hot he felt weird which made the whole thing feel weird
