As a result of the frequent courting of the emperor, the Xuan Long sincerely fell in love with him. But in the end, he was harmed to death by the emperor, and disappeared like ashes after giving birth to a dragon. I have to say that one definitely needs to be in the right mood to read a story like this. Once upon a time, Han Po/Xuan Long (MC) and Yan Yuan (ML) fell in love, but they weren’t fated together and by choosing each other, they were going against fate, and because of that they were punished. Most of the story is tragic - with one character (XL) suffering at the hands of the other (YY), and suffering as an act of atonement (YY). It’s a true dog blood story and I enjoyed it because the characters were written in such a way that their actions, no matter how cruel or ruthless, made sense. There was a clear cause and effect to their actions and the author managed to write complex characters who were flawed and yet had solid characterisation.

I think a lot of people wouldn’t appreciate the story for what it is because there’s so much abuse, especially in the first half of the story. There is no romance in this book, but it’s still a story about love. The only thing that I’m not satisfied with is that I don’t believe that YY suffered enough before he was forgiven by XL. Although I acknowledge that YY did his best to make amends and atone for his sins, I still wanted to see him suffer more after all that he put XL through because I felt like YY got the easy way out. I also was a little sad that A’Zhi and A’Lie didn’t have a happy ending and didn’t understand why the author had to do that to A’Lie who had suffered a lot and was abandoned too when he was a child. Like why was A'Lie the exception? I don't get it.

Tear jerking story. I wanted to give it a 4, but with my emotions going through a rollercoaster numerous times, I expected the book’s ending to be more rewarding😒

Instead, all I got was that the Son re-enacting the same absurdity as his father, the emperor. It left me feeling unfulfilled at heart.

Also the entire last part of the story didn’t make up for all the cr*p XL went through. Instead he got more heart break

……… it was a gripping story though

Rating: 3.5/5 - I actually did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did. On the angst scale, this was a clear tear duct cleaner. A thorough spa for my eyes.

Crematorium storyline - i think it dragged a bit excessively for YY because as much as his behaviour was intolerable, there was reasoning which made his storyline quite difficult to bear.

Honestly XL and YY are truly miserable. It is a miserable read. Happy moments are few and far between.
