Your reflection beckons you through the looking glass. Step through the cracks and travel paths where the darkness twists familiar shapes, where the once safe havens are overrun with danger, and the mundane objects of your life are forever changed.
Twenty authors share their view of the world through the shattered and splintered shards of their imaginations. Where does perception end and reality begin?
A tremendous anthology of stories brought together by editors Laurel Hightower and James Sabata to benefit the Glen Haven Volunteer Fire Dept in Colorado. Every author delivered a wonderful story; some gripping, some haunting, all terrifying in some way. I'd like to select a few stand-out stories, but I'd be selecting almost every single story. I will say opening with "All the Ways to Hollow Out a Girl" by Gwendolyn Kiste makes for an immediate impact, and then to follow-up with "Second Chances", a moving tale by Stephen Graham Jones, keeps the momentum going. "The Reliquarians" by former firefighter S.A. Bradley hits particularly hard, given their experience and the purpose of the anthology, but also because it feels like a deeply personal story. And ending with an emotionally charged story by Craig Wallwork - "The Weight of Vinegar" - makes me want to stand up and applaud. But then, every story was great in its own way. All due credit to the passion and effort of the editors, who have created an excellent collection for a great cause.
This is a charity anthology to support the volunteer firefighters who saved the Stanley Hotel. This serious list of authors came together to support the saving of the place that everyone visualizes when they think of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. The opener "All the Ways to Hollow Out a Girl" by Gwendolyn Kiste is both brutal and heartwarming. Every story continues to crank the tension and build those themes including love, parenthood, and sacrifice. Thisbook is worth your time to pick up and supports a good cause.
