Lincoln Peirce is a cartoon artist from Portland, Maine. He lives with his wife and two children, and occasionally gives lectures to students about cartoon creating. Peirce writes the comic strip "Big Nate". Peirce's comic strip, Big Nate, is featured as an island on the famous children's website, Poptropica. Big Nate appears as the first cartoon on The Maine Sunday Telegram in the comics section.
He studied art at Colby College in Maine were he began cartooning. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before teaching art and coaching basketball at a New York highschool for 3 years. He currently plays hockey with "an old men's league" and describes it as his best sport as a child. In an interview with the Washington Post, Peirce stated that his last name is pronounced "purse" and is not a misspelling of "pierce."
Lincoln Peirce was a member of the "Surviving as a Print Cartoonist" Panel at the Maine Comics Art Festival with fellow cartoonists Corey Pandolph (Barkeater Lake, Toby: Robot Satan, The Elderberries), Norm Feuri (Retail, Gill) and with Mike Lynch moderating. On the panel Lincoln revealed he is currently working with some animation and licensing projects including the addition of a Big Nate island to the online game Poptropica.
I didn’t mean to give this any stars as I am not the target audience but I read this book to the child I babysit and it was harder than expected to read out loud. It is definitely meant to be read in your head. Enjoyed the hour it took me to read this and I see why my little brother used to like these books a lot
Nate's life doesn't get any easier as he tries his best to steer through soccer, home, and school in another collection of situations, which hit a familiar note and leave a huge smile.
Nate's got his hands full...as usual. Playing goalie on the soccer team is a challenge but nothing compared to the inner-back and forth with his teammates and friends. Add a constant ear-flood of someone getting straight A's, a friend claiming that Nate only talks about himself, seasonal nonsense, and teachers...always teachers...and well, life is never calm.
Starting on the odd note of a 'successful' loss with a pinch of melancholy but full-hearted, spirited positivity, Nate's latest adventures take off in their usual direction of attempts, fails, and life twists he didn't see coming and isn't sure how to steer. The usual gang of characters let their personalities shine as they work through one moment to the next with all the attitude, mistakes, good intentions, and heart that readers have grown to love.
Of course, Nate has some new challenges. Not only is there a more pressure at school, but he swerves into the realm of girlfriends and the entire drama, which that might hold...if it ever got that far. It settles nicely into the age group without going overboard. Friendship also rings high as he does his best to step in, when help is needed, and his attempts do echo inspiration even when not always flawless. Then, there's his new role as coach as he needs to learn a few more life truths. So, the messages are plenty as their not-so-straight paths aim at familiar goals. But that's what makes the humor sit so well. It's always centered around issues, which readers can connect with, and the pain or ridiculousness these hold. Each one sits so close to home that it hits just right, so readers can see a bit of themselves in Nate or those around him.
The graphics, as always, are spot on and let Nate and his gang shine. They are easy to follow, bright and bold, and bring each moment the added push it needs.
It was a fun read and is sure to excite Big Nate fans, old and new. I received a DRC and enjoyed the snorts and laughs.
This book is actually AMAZING! I mean, all of the Big Nate books are nice but this one definitely the best. The funniest and most interesting part in the book was when Nate wrote his children's story book. Like seriously, I was laughing out loud at that. And the moral (Don't mess with animals, or ELSE...) was very funny as well. (By the way my name is Rishi Deshpande and I am 10 years old)
Nate is at it again. Cherry tomatoes for Halloween? Trying to be a coach with a splinted finger! Not to mention retaking the student lounge from Gina and her pals - see the front cover! Another enjoyable read!
I love when my little sisters pick out Big Nate books at the library. I usually read them first and enjoy them the most. You can’t go wrong with a Big Nate book! I am also drawing inspiration for a comic I want to illustrate and write :)
Another fun addition to the Nate universe. I always like when the strips interweave with some consistent themes and stories, and quite frankly, I would have bought the children's book that Nate writes because of the fact that it was intriguing.
If you like Big Nate, you won't be disappointed. And while you may not catch up with everything if this is your first foray into reading Big Nate stories, you don't have to have read the many books that came before to enjoy this one.
Once again, Nate is in the midst of a number of happenings. His father is handing out healthy treats (though it helps to have a Chad if you are looking for the good candy. Nate gets injured at a soccer game but is delighted that his team fails without him and decides to take a stab at coaching. He also has to push Gina and her fragrant air freshener out of the student lounge (by taking off his shoes), but even Teddy questions his methods.
This Book Is Awesome!!!! It's so interesting to see how the artwork has changed over the years! Here's a quick spoiler; A cat game instead of monopoly?!? A boyfriend for Dee Dee? A nickname for Chad?!?!
Weird fact: Jenny isn't shown AT ALL in this book!
Big Nate remains funny and a nice way to enjoy a quick, satisfying read. But so many of Lincoln Peirce's Big Nate books are simply compilations of the newspaper comic strip dailies. Granted, my local papers don't carry Big Nate, so this is all new to me, but I would like to see, at least once a year, a Big Nate story that is book-length.
It was alright for a Big Nate book. But they made fun of Chad too much in this book, and I will not take that bullying. It also wasn't that funny there were only a couple parts that I thought were somewhat funny. But the joke where he "Released the Hounds" I found quite funny.
Picked this up for my youngest kid... She didn't ask for more
Thanks to kindle unlimited there are lots of opportunities to read big nate. The included free seems to be a better price for the work as my kid didn't want me to find more to read.
I don't care what anyone says, this counts for my reading goal—it was funny, entertaining, and educational to me cause I was taking notes on how certain things were done in terms of making a comic
Also, Mr. Rosa is the best character anyone's ever made 😎
