Alex Turner is never The One--but always the last one an ex dates before finding love--and now she's determined to find out why in this hilarious new rom-com.
Single divorce attorney Alex Turner is watching reality TV when she sees her latest ex's new fiancé picking out her wedding dress. Yet again, the guy she dumped went on to marry (or at least seriously commit to) the next person he dates after her. Fed up with being the precursor to happily ever after, she decides to interview all her exes to find out why.
Up-and-coming chef Will Harkness mixes with Alex like oil and vinegar, but forced proximity growing up means their lives are forever entwined. When Will learns Alex and her friends are going on a wild romp through Los Angeles to reconnect with her ex-boyfriends, he decides to tag along. If he can discover what her exes did wrong, he can make sure he doesn't make the same mistake with Alex.
On this nonstop journey through the streets of LA, Alex realizes the answer to her question might be the man riding shotgun...
I wish I could love this book a little more! The blurb promised so much fun! It reminded me of Dan Cook’s Good Luck Chuck movie: all girls Chuck dates, finds their soulmate to get marry as soon as they sleep with him! Alex shares the same fate: her exes find their HEA as soon as they break up from her! She might be a good luck charm for them but she might keep doing something wrong and she also earned her own HEA, didn’t she?
Alex and her friends’ teaming up for the entertaining journey to help Alex have her closure with the ghosts of past boyfriends and Alex and Will’s sexy chemistry filled with enemies to lovers theme raised my expectations BUT… the book was a little aimless and slow burn.
Mostly we get lost inside the nonstop inner dialogues of the MCs who keep thinking the same thing in repetitive cycle : they don’t like each other and they shouldn’t be together. The last third the pace finally picked up but I wish the entire book was a little bumpy ride!
I connected with the supportive girlfriends more than the MCs!
Unfortunately I didn’t like this book as much as I enjoyed her previous work. The plot idea was great but the execution was a little underdeveloped. So I’m giving three solid stars!
But I still look forward to read the next works of the author!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in my honest thoughts.
Thank You, Next by Andie J. Christopher is a contemporary romantic comedy. Combining romance and humor, it features single divorce attorney Alex Turner and gifted chef Will Harkness. When Alex sees her latest ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend picking out her wedding dress, she reflects on her dating life. She’s determined to find out why they go into a committed relationship soon after breaking up with her. Will and Alex have known each other since they were teens and have a tumultuous relationship. When he learns about Alex’s quest, he decides to tag along with her and her two friends, Lana and Jane.
Neither Alex nor Will have had role models that had lasting relationships. Alex is a great attorney, but has moments of vulnerability. Her insecurities seemed too embedded as the book progressed. Will is shrewd, but hates the publicity required by his job. Can they find the answers they seek and find happiness? The secondary characters are diverse and significantly add to the enjoyment of the novel.
The author provides a look at how past events and actions can affect one’s personality. There is a lot of introspection by both main characters that resulted in more telling than showing. This also slowed the pace of the story. The book focuses on relationships and how trust affects them. Overall, this was an entertaining and charming novel with some humor and laugh out-loud moments as well as some pivotal emotional times.
Berkley Publishing Group and Andie J. Christopher provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for June 14, 2022.

Good. Fresh - Dealing with the mental stuff while finally finding that second chance love. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have to like ourselves, and even love ourselves, before we can truly give love to someone else. Sometimes realizing that and doing the work can be tough.
Alex finds this out the hard way while we are along for the ride. Self-discovery is tough and doing the work can be a tough cookie to take on, especially when it also includes someone you love to hate.
Will is a sweetheart and honestly the best part of this story for me. He is kind-hearted, giving, and loves to take care of Alex when she lets him. He protects her and stands by her as she goes through the mental clarity she needs to work through to finally admit the truth about Will and find her true self.
Thank You, Next is a fresh and relatable romantic journey. The characters are beautifully developed. I especially love Lexi. She is a trip. The second chance romance is worth the wait but I wish we got more of the future and a bit less of their history.
I adored this book so much. Alex Turner is an emotionally unavailable divorce attorney who is trying to figure out why her ex-boyfriends find “the one” right after they break up. To find the answers, she looks up her exes so she can ask them what went wrong in her past relationships.
In the midst of all this, she runs into Will who is someone she considers her “nemesis” but deep down has feelings for. He ends up tagging along to help Alex get what she is looking for.
This book was a fun and quick read. I love a good second chance romance with a little bit of a slow burn. Overall just an amazing read.
This one had so much potential for me, I loved the idea of an emotionally unavailable woman trying to figure out where she went wrong in past relationships. I really liked that she would be looking some of her exes up to get answers and thought it was a fun and interesting idea. Unfortunately as much as I wanted to enjoy this one it just didn’t work out that way for me in the end. Things started out ok but as it progressed I started to get bored and lost interest. There was a lot of introspection and inner monologues and not enough dialogue and conversations to keep me invested. I also didn’t love Alex which is always tough and the fact that by halfway I was forcing myself to pick it back up should’ve been a sign for me to just set it aside and move on. I think maybe this author just isn’t for me, something about her style just doesn’t end up working out for me but I know she has lots of fans and am sure many will enjoy this more than I did!
Alex Turner is perplexed. Why is it that none of her relationships have led her down the aisle? Why are her previous exes getting married or already married? As a divorce attorney, Alex has seen the worst of marriages but seriously doubts that she herself will eventually find the right one. Seeing her ex on a reality TV show helping his upcoming bride choose a wedding dress has really shaken Alex, so she makes a decision to interview each of her exes to find out what was missing in their relationships and what she could do better. She has hopes of finding out why marriage was not in the cards for any of those relationships.
There is someone that is very special to Alex and that is her grandmother, Lexi, and also her best friends Lana and Jane. Meanwhile, Will Harkness is a thorn in Alex‘s side. While her friends are eager for her to go ahead and follow through with her plan to interview these exes, her grandmother has asked Will to keep an eye on her. Here is the rub. Her grandmother has had many marriages and one of them was Will’s father years ago. This technically makes Will Alex‘s step-uncle. The two share a past where at one point Alex made it clear to Will that she was very attracted to him. He had his reasons for avoiding a relationship with her then and even now, despite the fact that he finds himself quite drawn to her.
So, Alex begins her trek talking to her exes and this really shakes Will because the more time he spends with her in what he considers a useless endeavor, the more he finds that his feelings are becoming more difficult to fight. Meanwhile, the sensitivity in the story shows Alex feeling less than when it comes to not having found her own happily ever after. I liked that take in this story. Thank You, Next was an enjoyable second-chance story with delightful characters, a fun concept and a wonderful romance.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I was SO excited for this one. I love the entire concept—a woman revisiting her exes to determine why the ending of their relationship always leads to a happily-ever-after for everyone but her. Again and again, her exes move on to marry the next person they date.
Alex is a divorce attorney who sees marriage as a foolish gamble. I really liked the enemies-with-a-secret-attraction vibes between her and Will, a recently divorced, complicated family friend. I didn't quite understand the reasoning why they simply couldn't be together, though. Her hatred towards him, especially after so many years, was a bit silly. But it was fun to have him tag along on her mission and see the jealousy build.
I was expecting a lot of comedy in this one, but I didn't really get that. Each moment with an ex was brief, not really offering anything unique compared to the last. It became very repetitive.
My favorite thing is when you’re listing to an audiobook and not keeping track of how much you have left and then the book is like “thanks for listening!” After a sentence that should not have been the last sentence bc the relationship still has miles to go and you’re like…well that happened
I mean I wasn’t very irritated but I just don’t know what I listened to like why didn’t they just get together all those years ago…
Also this woman’s life was crazy she just straight up knew and dated celebrities?? I feel like that was so nonchalant
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶*/5
*very vague language but a little somethin somethin
Alex is a strong woman, who needs no man and never plans on getting married. That is, until she sees her ex on "That's my Dress", getting married after he told her he never wanted to get married either! She realizes all of her exes have gotten married or found long term relationships right after their break ups. She realizes she needs to ask them why they broke up so she can try to figure out what she is doing wrong. Will is back in Alex's life after his divorce. He is trying to open a new restaurant alone. He has always had a thing for Alex, but he could never act on it. If it went bad, he could lose the one person that means the most to him. Lexi, Alex's grandma, is the only mother he's ever known and he can't chance letting her down. When he sees what Alex is doing though, he has to try to make her see its just her choosing the wrong man and it is about feeling comfortable enough to open up. I really enjoyed this second chance at love between WIll and Alex. I think both of them harboured feelings for so long that they didn't even know what to do with them. Will was still scared of losing Lexi, but after Lexi pushing him towards Alex, he knew what he had to do. He had to follow his heart and Alex had to follow hers. There were bumps along the way, but a relationship can be so much more when you fully trust your partner and these two proved that. Thank you to Andie Christopher, Netgalley and Berkley for an early copy.
The book didn't really sell to me why these two should be together in the first place. I didn't get the impression that their attraction to each other was in any way justified. They had a crush to each other since they were teens but why would you feel this super attracted to one another after several boyfriends and a marriage later? It didn't really make any sense, especially because they didn't really treat each other well.
My biggest issue was the love interest, though. He wasn't really a great guy to begin with and acted like an asshole towards the heroine... on purpose. He couldn't handle the heroine outside of her tough lawyer persona and was kind of irritated why she'd be emotional and think stuff like "that's not the woman I know" lol maybe you don't know her at all when you assume someone is only tough and no emotions 24/7. He showed no understanding for the problem she dealt with and was dismissive of her emotions.
He also admonished the heroine for being jealous of him talking to his ex-wife while he had absolutely no issue whatsover in throwing jealousy fits over her talking to her ex-boyfriends, with actually growling like a dog and stuff lol make it make sense. He kept on highlighting that all the heroine's exes were assholes... and while that was certainly true, I didn't get the impressione that he was any better.
So yeah, I am not sold on the book's main couple and didn't really find he love interest romantic at all (I mean, he really said stuff like he was the reason why she couldn't keep serious relationships because he was the first guy to ditch her and break her heart when they were teens... the ego of that dude was just too big to fit in this book). Sadly, even the good commentary on sexist expectations on women in relationships/marriages didn't save this one for me. So this is a "thank you, next" to this book, I guess.
1.5 Stars I was not the biggest fan of the characters in this. I found Alex and Will to be both incredibly frustrating. They are both very poor communicators and that leads to a big of a rocky start for their relationship - and for most of their interaction to be honest. I didn't feel their chemistry or their backstory even though they are supposed to have known each other for years. And I really struggled with Alex's motivations for seeking out her ex boyfriends, it just didn't seem to make sense for her character. Overall, it was a bit of a letdown.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Alex is a family law attorney, specializing in divorce. Because of what she sees in her everyday work life and what she grew up knowing, she doesn't really believe in marriage and happily ever after. When she sees her recent ex, Jason, on a reality show about getting married she realizes that after all of her relationships have ended the next person her ex dates turns into marriage. Thus sets forth her journey of self discovery as she interviews her past boyfriends to find out what went wrong.
Will and Alex refer to themselves as 'family friends', since his father was briefly married to her famous grandmother, Lexi. Both harbor a secret crush for each other that goes back to when they were teenagers, but both don't want to rock the boat and give love a try. When Will learns of Alex's plan he tags along to see what the ex's have to say, so he can figure out a plan to see what would happen if he gives his feelings a chance.
The back and forth between their perspectives really kept the story flowing at a nice pace. I really enjoyed all the characters, especially Will's grumpiness, Alex's honesty and Lexi's pizzazz.
This was a quick, slow burn, somewhat enemies to lovers and somewhat second chance romance that had me chuckling quite a few times. It's heavy on diversity and slim on the communication.
*Thanks to Berkley Books, Andie J. Christopher and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
Alex Turner is ready for love, but finds herself repeatedly being “the one before The One” in her relationships. A great premise for a book, this one didn’t quite deliver for me. I enjoyed parts but ultimately I was ready to say “next” to Andie J. Christopher’s Thank You, Next.
About the Books
When divorce attorney Alex Turner sees her most recent ex looking awfully happy with his new fiancé picking out a wedding dress on a reality television show, she starts to question whether she is really interested in marriage after all. In a spiral, Alex dives into social media to see where her other exes have ended up, and notices a troubling trend—each of her exes seems to get engaged to the person they dated immediately after their break up with Alex.
Is it possible Alex is pushing men to get married, just not to her? Was dating her so awful they settled with the next person they meet? Alex needs to find out, so she begins to track down her exes one by one. Alex’s friend Will Harkness, a celebrity chef, finds out about her plans and decides he needs to o along on this investigation into her prior relationships. Alex and Will have mostly avoided one another after Will rejected Alex’s feelings as teenagers. However, Will has remained tied to Alex through her grandmother Lexi, a jazz musician who was formerly married to Will’s father. Now, the two embark on a journey through Alex’s past, but find that they may have some feelings between them that haven’t been addressed.
My Thoughts
I felt this one didn’t quite live up to what I was expecting and I wanted to love it more than I did. I loved the premise of it and I liked the idea of a friend helping her work through past relationships only for her to realize he was right there all along—one of the best romance tropes in my opinion! I think for many of us it is also relatable to have an ex (or several) who find their happily ever after right after dating us, and it definitely can get into your head.
Ultimately this one relied a bit too much on the inner dialogues of the characters and lacked a bit of the humor I expected to find. Some romance books fall into the trap of being too repetitive—they really want to hammer home the central break down of communication and feelings between the leads—and I felt this book suffered from that. I likes the supporting cast of characters and I did like the lead characters mostly, though I got a bit annoyed with them at times. Ultimately I think this was a cute story that if you can push through does have a satisfying ending. Some of the misses were in the writing style and plot, for me. I suspect that this author may just not be the best fit for me as a reader, and that’s ok! I can be a bit picky with romance books and I think I wanted a bit more rom com than what this book delivered.
Thank You, Next by Andie J. Christopher is an emotional look at one woman’s desire to find out more about herself by visiting her ex-boyfriends. I enjoyed this light and a somewhat steamy book about finding your strength.
Alex Turner is a single divorce attorney. Her life and her job have made her a bit cynical about marriage and she knows she’ll never marry. But, when she watches a reality tv show about wedding dresses, she sees her ex-boyfriend's new fiance saying “yes to the dress” and she starts to wonder why her ex-boyfriends always seem to find “the one” right after they break up with her.
She runs into her nemesis from High School, Will Harkness who is almost family, but not quite. Will and Alex don’t get along at all and share a healthy dislike for each other and normally they don’t spend any time together. But when Alex decides to go and interview all her old boyfriends, he wants to tag along. Will is an up-and-coming chef, and it’s clear that his dislike for Alex, is turning to like and a whole lot more.
I loved Lexi, Alex’s grandmother, she really added some warmth and humor to the story. She’s a talented, intelligent, and powerful woman, and it’s clear that Alex inherited these traits from her.
The romance between Alex and Will was realistic and steamy. They had a strong attraction, but it took a while for them to figure out it was more than just a physical attraction. But the real story is Alex’s journey to learning more about herself and how her past is dictating the way she interacts with men.
I recommend Thank You, Next to anyone who enjoys romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I received a gifted galley of THANK YOU, NEXT by Andie J. Christopher for an honest review. Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and Netgalley for the opportunity!
THANK YOU, NEXT follows Alex, a divorce attorney with a string of failed relationships. She’s not interested in marriage, but finding out that her ex got engaged not all that long after their split, it does start her wondering where all of her relationships have gone wrong. She sets out on a quest to find out by revisiting the men from her past.
Will is the man who was very briefly the step-son of her marriage happy grandmother, a man who once rejected her. There’s always been something under the surface between them and his continued relationship with her grandmother keeps him involved in her life. Her quest to revisit her exes has him jealous and getting involved along the way.
This was a fun and quick read. I will say that it relies quite a lot on miscommunication that keeps Alex and Will on different pages quite frequently. This isn’t a trope that I tend to enjoy, but I did like seeing the improvement in their communication skills over the course of the book. There is a large cast of supporting characters which added diversity as well!
This is a book I’d recommend for the romance fans! THANK YOU, NEXT is out now!
This was such a great book! It’s a humorous enemies to lovers, slow burn romance. Alex is a successful divorce attorney who says she doesn’t want to get married, but it bothers her when she sees an ex and his fiancé on Say Yes to the Dress. She discovers that she’s the last relationship her exes had before they got married, and she wants to know why. She decides to talk to her exes to find out. Accompanying her is her old friend Will, now a busy chef. They’ve known each other since they were younger. As Alex meets her former lovers and learns more about herself, and Will opens up, they figure out that maybe they should be together. I liked the characters especially Alex’s friends. Her parade of lovers were humorous too. 4 stars.

"Always the fling, never the ring," reads the cover, and we soon learn why Alex, a divorce attorney, is meeting up with her exes. She wants to know why they broke up with her, then found a wife right after.
In addition to the great story concept and title, I really loved the characters, especially Will, who comes back into Alex's life during her quest, and her spirited much-married grandmother, Lexi. A fun read for fans of romantic second chances.
Thanks to the author, Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
A solid 2 just for the fact the author referred to the female main character’s lady bits as “raw sea urchin” during sexy times 🤢 also it was lowkey boring
Thank you, next is a contemporary romantic comedy featuring single divorce lawyer Alex and Will, a talented chef. They met many years ago when her grandmother was married to his father, but lost touch after their divorce. Alex has a history of her boyfriends breaking up with her and then getting into serious relationships right afterwards so when she sees her most recent ex’s new fiancé on a reality show picking out her wedding dress, she decides to go on a quest to meet up with all her exs and find out what it really was about her that made them realize that they weren’t going to go the distance. When Will discovers Alex’s quest, he decides to go along with her to protect her. Can they find the answers they’re seeking? Can they find their happy ever after? The author does a great job of showing how past events and relationships affect who you are now and what you bring to a relationship. There’s a lot of emotional delving and some fun moments as well. Thanks to Berkley Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
Funny and heartwarming enemies to lovers romance. Over a decade ago, Alex kissed Will - only to have Will clearly grossed out and not interested. As the stepson of her grandmother Lexi - though happily divorced from his father, Alex has accepted Will is simply a part of her life. An uncomfortable, don't have to be nice or even talk to him part of her life. The tension between these characters - loved it. After seeing her ex-lover on Say Yes to the Dress - weeks after their breakup, Alex decides to do a quality check on a few past lovers. Why did they breakup? Why did they marry their next partner? Consumed with the upcoming opening of his new restaurant, Will can't help but tell Alex how dumb the whole concept is. Together, they explore their own past, while figuring out their future.
Alex is a commitment phobe, she has no use for a long term committed relationship. Her family life and her career as a divorce attorney have made her jaded about love. That is until she sees her ex boyfriend and his fiance on Say Yes to the Dress. She realizes that most of her exes moved onto serious committed relationships right after their breakups.
Alex embarks on a quest to find out what it was about her that made her exes not commit. She visits a bunch of exes to get their perspective on her and what she learns is not flattering.
Her childhood crush, Will, seems determined to stop this info quest. He's broody, protective and yet turned Alex down years ago. He growls and grunts but he definitely has a soft spot for her.
As the story progresses, you find out more of their backstory, but it just wasn't enough for me. I wanted to get to know them more.
Alex is not the most relatable character, however the supporting characters including her friends and grandma are wonderful. I wish they were all more fleshed out and I'd love to see more about them in the future.
Did I read this because it has the title of an Ariana Grande song? Maybe. Will I ever make that mistake again? Probably.
Alex Turner is a divorce lawyer who doesn't believe in marriage because she comes from a broken family and she's pining for Will who she's loved since she was a teen. He's also been pining for her but rejected her when they were teens because he was also briefly her step-uncle(?) and didn't want to lose his family.
The first half of the book is just one internal monologue after the other. We know that Alex doesn't believe in marriage, but the author really makes it a point to remind us on every page and uses every metaphor possible to illustrate the same point. A major part of this book is Alex finding out that all of her ex-boyfriends' next girlfriends right after Alex ended up being the ones they married. She wonders why they didn't want that kind of commitment with her, but like girl, you literally spent pages and pages talking about how you didn't ever want to get married??? So why would they think they could've had that with you??
This romance book barely has any romance. Alex and Will exchange maybe 20 lines of dialogue in the whole book (except for one extended scene where they're opening up to each other, but by the time we got to that part I didn't care anymore). The plotline of Alex's quest to find out why all of her previous relationships didn't work out was repetitive, and that time could've been used to develop her and Will's relationship, because lusting after each other as teenagers doesn't really explain why they should be together as adults.
The writing was so lackluster which led to none of the characters having personalities. The dual POVs added nothing. The author was very heavy-handed when writing about feminism and racism and social issues. They were essentially mini-essays in the middle of a book, instead of organically weaving them in and illustrating how the character faces these challenges. Her friends literally use the words "avoidant attachment style" when describing her. Isn't the first rule of writing to show, not tell?
Confirmed: I’m inept at selecting audiobooks. I’m out here wanting something easy breezy lemon squeezy to listen to, but no.
This main character drove me bonkers. Her perception of herself versus how she reacts to her environment is at conflict. Even the recounts from her old flames—in regards to her behavior and treatment of her relationships—don’t add up! How is this all the same “badass” character when she seems, like, five different people at once?
And the love interest…huh? He makes no sense. His character development makes no sense. Oh, and the possessiveness they both feel for one another is toxic, not cute. Rather than finally getting together and living happily ever after, they each need to seek out therapy and maybe one of them moves outta town.
A new to me author, I was thrilled to finally get to read an Andie J. Christopher title, and I have to say Thank You, Next made me want to reach for the author's backlist. I am a total sucker for a play on words title, I feel like it just sets the right tone for the book I'm picking up. As soon as I was sent this one I had to read it, and I have no regrets.
The concept of this book had me really excited as it puts a spin on second chance romance as we meet Alex, a divorce lawyer who has been a serial dater and has never been interested in the idea of marriage.
She's been in love with her grandmother's ex step-son, Will, for years and we get a complicated childhood friends trope storyline that is refreshing and full of emotion. What I liked most about the story was how different it was, this fierce female who is successful and set in her idea of never wanting to get married struggles when she realizes she is the last girlfriend before each of her exes gets married.
"And just maybe excavating old shit was part of her DNA. That's what her mother did for a living, after all. How would she understand her past and be able to move forward if she didn't look at all the mistakes she'd made? If she didn't spread them out on a plastic tarp, examine them closely, document them and file them away."
As we're taken on her journey of self-awareness and discovery, we meet a variety of men in her past dating pool and her delightful friends who made the story even more fun and interesting. I LOVED the diversity and each personality of every character, even the exes we were meant to not like - who DOESN'T have an ex like that?!
While I enjoyed the flashbacks of Alex and Will's past and present, at times I did find myself wishing we hadn't gotten MORE from the action and less in their head. The thoughts and feelings were important of course, but I would've loved more scene-setting / visual aspects of the romance versus the retrospective viewpoints.
I can't write a review without loving on this book cover, I thought it was SO perfect!
Thank you to Berkley Romance + NetGalley for the eARC, I'm thrilled to be a part of the upcoming blog tour for this title!
Argh, I went in with wanting to love this one soo much. As i am such a sucker for enemies to lovers trope. However, I just didn’t like our main character, Alex Turner. I found myself enjoying the side characters more.
The romance was a little flat for my liking and a little repetitive in my opinion. And we spent wayyy to much time in Alex’s and Will’s heads. Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t for me.
Thank you to Berkeley Pub and netgalley for granting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
