I was recommended this by one of my patrons and since it is pretty short I decided to read it. So glad I did, this is surprisingly funny and actually hits some important topics. Skims over them some, yeah, but it’s enough to introduce younger tweens to these feelings and let them know they aren’t alone. Which… I was not expecting from a movie tie-in graphic novel haha.

Aaron T.’s chapter had me dying with laughter. The artwork is so dramatic and perfect.
10/10 recommend.

Representation: Black Canadian protagonists, Latine Canadian protagonist, Korean-Canadian protagonist, white Canadian protagonist, secondary character of colour.

Content Warning: anxiety.

Very cute, but not at all what I expected. To be perfectly honest, I am not even sure what I was expecting from this though. I liked it and simultaneously I am thinking why was this created? It gave depth to characters from the movie and it was nice, but I believe they should have started a narrative arc instead of putting together one-offs.

AHHHH!!! SO CUTE 😱😭🤧🤩

I would totally read a 4*Town manga series. Actually, I need one now 😫 This was a fun look at all of the boys and shed a little more light on their individual personalities and backstories. The art was amazing and really added to the hilarity. Perhaps this is a side effect of my love for Turning Red but 🤷🏽‍♀️ I WANT MORE!

This was so much fun! I picked this up on a whim because I loved Turning Red and thought the idea of giving the fictional band their own graphic novel was very fun, but this positively surprised me! While it goes a little fast sometimes, the story still manages to hit on some real emotional moments, and the illustrations were absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, looking at some of those pages are worth it on their own. Recommended for any fellow 4*townies!

Not really what I was expecting. Them going off and having their own moments was honestly a bit confusing. It would have made more sense to do separate books for each of them or something along those lines. It was just okay, not the biggest fan.

Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ for the eGalley to review!

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I saw that there was a 4*Town manga, to be honest, but I can't say I was disappointed? It's largely a get-to-know series of scenes featuring each band member so you can get more of an idea of their individual stories and personalities. They play off each other pretty well and seem to be a realistic portrayal of life beyond the concerts and recording sessions that bands have.

That said, I feel like they were given almost *too* deep of personalities/situations? [Spoilers] Jesse talks to Tae Young about how he was adopted, he can't find his birth parents, and his adoptive father died when he was young and he couldn't support his adoptive mom in her grief, so he ended up finding family in the children he had later on. Tae Young has a very in-depth (and slightly dark) explanation about his own father verbally and emotionally abusing him because he isn't what his dad wanted his son to be. Aaron Z. is deeply jealous of Robaire, with whom he grew up and feels is "too perfect" and is sucking the happiness out of him (which gets resolved when Robaire literally sings his praises to him). The only band member who didn't have a depressing or dramatic story was Aaron T., who simply took his bodyguard shopping and got into some shenanigans with fans. The depth was not at all what I was expecting when I saw we were getting a tie-in manga for the band.

That said and like I said before, I wasn't disappointed. Despite its seriousness in the guys' stories, it was just as wholesome and sincerely funny (Aaron T. dropping his ice cream and Jesse opening a jar for Robaire were my favorite pages). Did this plot device of a set of characters really need all this? Nah, not really. Am I okay with it? Honestly, yeah. And I'm especially happy for all the kids who are inevitably going to take all this new information about these characters and make fanfic about it. This kind of supplemental character development and showcasing is what we need for popular media.

(One thing, though: even though everyone but Tae Young is in their twenties, the bit about their pajamas felt a little yikes because Aaron Z. says he sleeps naked. I'm not sure a 22-year-old telling his fans who are mostly minors (and minors who aren't even teens yet) that he sleeps naked was a good choice here.)

I mean, I get what this is going for, but—honestly—I've forgotten all of them except Robaire (who namedrops himself), so this is almost like reading a random book about a random boy* band, especially since they're drawn more proportional to real humans and less stylised like in the movie. The only other movie characters who show up (recogniseably) are Mei's dad, Mei in mention (question submitted via fax to a broadcast), and Mei's mom in a *very quick* flashback of the movie climax that's curiously glossed over in this book.

It's not BAD as such, but I don't know that I would necessarily recommend it to fans of the movie looking for more content. Then again, I don't take that much interest in the private lives of celebrities anymore—especially after reading Prince Harry's tell-all—so this isn't really my jam, I guess.

The "40☆Town" 20-year reunion gag comic is funny, though, haha.

*although, apparently the oldest one is 28 *and has kids*, so not really "boy" band

I really don't know what I was expecting but....

I NEED MORE!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!

This was so cute and funny. We basically get mini stories following all the members and there is just so much fluff but we get some nuggets that make you want these guys fleshed out even more. I wanna know what goes down with Tae Young and his dad, I want more of Jesse and his fam, the history of Robaire and Aaron Z, and just more in general of Aaron T because he's like every eccentric main guy from every anime ever and I just want more of him.

I really hope that the release a few more of these!!!!

Big thanks to NetGalley and Viz Media for the Arc!

Holy did I enjoy this ! 4 Town hit a special place in my heart in the movie and to see the character brought to life and more depth added was amazing!! This story is just fun! It's good time getting to know the different members and how they interact together! I loved the variety in the boys and their different goals! Honestly I would be happy reading multiple different stories about them and their careers as boy band idols! The illustrations truly brought another dimension to the story! This is perfect for any fans of Turning Red or 4 Town!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Viz Media for an e-copy to review.

What a cute tie-in to the movie Turning Red! As a lover of the early 2000s boy band group I enjoyed seeing more of 4*Town 4 Ever. Getting a glimpse into their personal lives felt like such a bonus to anyone who has seen the movie and couldn't get enough of the band. While no real overarching plot except what the boys do on their off days I still think it is a fun read and thought the art was clean and well done, really matches the typical manga style.

4 Town is the band in the Turning Red Disney movie. This graphic novel is about the band. However, I’m not exactly sure who the audience for this graphic novel is. At times it feels like it is for a middle grade however, with the “Dad” issues and the meet cute love interest feel makes it feel more adult. This is one of those things that I think is It’s meant for about six grade and that’s who will read it. I would much rather read about the characters from Turning Red, which I think was a fantastic story.

I loved Turning Red and when this was announced I knew I had to read it; I am so glad I did. Besides not only having the blessing(and cameo) of Domee herself, this gives insight into the group before and after their Toronto performance. I liked how all their distinct personalities shined through as well as explanations as to how some members are the way they are. I can honestly say this was a favorite to read this year for sure.

A fun and short read for those who loved the movie “Turning Red” and also loved listening to Boy Bands during the early 2000s. The manga introduces the group members and reveals parts of their lives many fans probably did not know about.

Although 4-Town is completely fictional, reading the manga made it feel like I was watching documentaries or interviews of actual pop stars’ personal lives without the drama and possible rumors.

This was such an unexpected read. I feel in loved with band from watching them in Turning Red. So after hearing their songs and watching the animated performance I just wanted more. I definitely wasn’t expecting them getting their own manga so I definitely had to read it. It went way deeper than I expected it to emotionally. But I’m definitely here to learn about these characters as more than just the pretty animated boy band. So if more volumes are made I will definitely be reading them.

Read for Popsugar: A book based on a popular movie

Loved Turning Red and these silly famous boys, but this book felt a little disjointed and like I was missing some context. It was still cute, I just had to re-read a few things to make sure I understood what was going on. It was surprisingly a little dark in tone in places. I think I was expecting more story-driven cuteness, and what we got were more realistic vignettes.

Super super cute! You really get a chance to have to deeper look into these characters and what they go through, their struggles and what they do to come over them. Adorable and funny, and a little bit emotional, i overall think it’s a very well done spin off from Turning Red and definitely accentuates what the animated movie was teaching to its audience. Would definitely recommend to fans of the film!

For fans of Disney & Pixar’s ‘Turning Red,’ 4*Town 4*Real follows the members of the popular boyband while they enjoy a day off. This was a great way to expand the characters from the movie and I hope we see more from them! Just shy of 200 pages, this book hits on family, the importance of following your heart, and brotherhood.

Thank you to NetGalley and Viz Media for an eARC.

Ooh, I know this gonna get the girlies going lol.

But It’s admirable and cute that the author tried to give them some depth. One of the members is actually a father, another has expectations from his parents to live up to, and another is jealous and has a one-sided rivalry with the band leader. The artwork is like a beautiful shoujo and 4Town looks like fashionable princes.

Super cute and super sweet, light-hearted read! Did not take a long time to get through at all. For lovers of Turning Red and its popular Canadian pop group 4*Town.

Enjoyed this. Just something light and small as a pick me up. Probably served best after a healthy dose of watching Turning Red first as an accompaniment. 💖

Delightful and funny view into a day in the life of world famous Canadian boyband 4*town! You get daddy issues, secret family, bffs and a flighty darling out with a stern bodyguard. Some 2002 realness here! ETA: I think the target audience here might be more the people who'd go to the 2022 reunion, and not their kids.
